The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III SLR Digital Camera (Body Only) incorporates a 21.1-megapixel full-frame CMOS image sensor that delivers astounding image quality, with 14-bit per-channel color, and utilizes the latest Dual "DIGIC III" Image Processors that work in tandem to speed up data handling and camera operation, while further refining imaging performance. The camera is constructed with a tough, high-durability body made from quality magnesium alloy, and a shutter that has been designed and tested to withstand over 300,000 exposures.

The Large three-inch LCD screen of the EOS-1Ds mark III provides broad color gamut and a wide viewing angle , and the Live View function uses the LCD display to provide an expanded and exceedingly convenient set of shooting options. By permitting the framing and capturing of subjects using the camera's LCD screen instead of the viewfinder, the shooter gains a 100 percent field view to more easily achieve the desired composition, and an added Custom Function allows auto-focus during Live View, and provides the user with the ability to magnify the image by five or ten times in order to ensure optimal focus. Live View is at its best during tripod shooting - particularly for close-up photography where precise focusing is imperative.

The EOS Integrated Cleaning System uses ultrasonic vibrations to literally shake dust particles off of the low-pass filter in front of the sensor each time the camera is powered up or shut down. Users also have the option of engaging the "clean now" function at will or bypassing it altogether. Additionally, the manual sensor cleaning function raises the mirror and allows users to clean dust that has stuck to the low-pass filter. The second part of the cleaning system is a software solution that maps the location of any spots that may remain on the sensor. Subsequently, the offending dust information is subtracted from the final image during post processing using the supplied Digital Photo Professional software.

The EOS-1Ds Mark III Digital SLR is compatible with the full line-up of Canon EF lenses and is also compatible with any of the EX Speedlite line of flash units and supports the E-TTL II protocol that provides reliable flash output whether shooting fill-in flash pictures in sunlight, or using flash in total darkness. The camera is also compatible with 15 different interchangeable focusing screens, an extensive range of remote control and lighting accessories, and the WFT-E2A Wireless File Transmitter which permits wireless transfer and back-up, connection to a GPS receiver, or data transfer to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 external storage devices as well as remote control of the camera in Live View mode.

21.1 Megapixel Full-Frame CMOS Sensor with 14-bit A/D Conversion
The EOS-1Ds Mark III uses a full-frame (36 x 24mm) CMOS sensor, which delivers approximately 21.1 effective megapixels delivering high-resolution images with Photoshop file sizes over 60MB for outstanding quality at large print sizes and extensive cropping flexibility. Furthermore the 14-bit per channel A/D converter processes the output of the imaging sensor, resulting in 16,384 distinct brightness steps , and ensures smoother tonal transitions and more natural gradations. The cameras RAW images are recorded at the full 14 bit per channel color depth, and once processed will preserve the entire range of tones when opened in Photoshop's 16-bit color space.
Light-weight and Durable Body with Enhanced Weather Resistance
The EOS-1Ds Mark III is more rugged than its predecessors - clad in a magnesium alloy shell, chassis and top panel, the camera exhibits impressive strength while keeping the camera's weight to a minimum. And all of the controls and external cover seams are sealed from water and dust. The camera also features impressive shutter durability and has been designed and tested to withstand over 300,000 exposures.
Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit and Dust Delete Data Detection
The EOS-1Ds Mark III features a Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit. It functions by inducing ultrasonic vibrations in the low-pass filter of the CMOS sensor to literally shake the dust off of it. Any Dust that has been missed by the Integrated Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit can also be "erased" with the included Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software. The imaging sensor is able to single out the dust particles on its surface, and then plots out their location within the image for either manual or automatic removal in Canon's DPP software.
High-precision Fast AF system
The EOS-1Ds Mark III incorporates an extraordinary 45-point high-density area AF system that provides not only the industry's largest continuous AF coverage area, but also the greatest range of control over focusing point selection. The focusing point can be selected automatically by the camera (based on high-speed microcomputer analysis of image content), or users can manually select any of the 19 high precision cross-type AF points, which can be complemented by 26 additional Assist Points for fast, accurate focusing. Custom AF functions aid the photographer in choosing default focusing points, as well as changing the size of a manually-selected AF point, making this not only the fastest, but also the most customizable AF system on the planet.
Fast Burst Shooting Capability
The EOS-1Ds Mark III can maintain a maximum continuous shooting speed of 5 frames per second, for up to 56 full-resolution JPEG images or 12 RAW images. This impressive shooting speed is achieved thanks to the unparalleled Canon high-speed data management technologies incorporated into the camera, including the use of dual DIGIC III processor chips.
Dual DIGIC III Image Processor
The EOS-1Ds Mark III uses Dual DIGIC III chips, working in parallel, to dramatically enhance image quality and deliver impressive speed and power. The DIGIC III Image Processors work in concert with Canon's CMOS sensor to achieve the highest levels of performance, giving the camera its incredible combination of speed and image quality, while minimizing digital noise.
Highlight Tone Priority
The EOS-1Ds Mark III provides a Highlight Tone Priority setting that expands the cameras exposure range to the maximum allowable highlight level, resulting in smoother highlights and a minimization of loss in highlight detail. This Function maximizes detail in bright highlights, even in high contrast lighting conditions. Furthermore this impressive custom mode has no impact on the camera's shooting speed or burst capability.
Picture Style Settings
Picture Style settings recreate the characteristics of your favorite films by making automatic adjustments to color, saturation, sharpness and contrast settings to generate noticeable variation in the captured images. In addition to six preset Picture Styles (Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful and Monochrome), users can create three additional settings for their particular photographic style.
Large 3.0-inch LCD Monitor, Featuring Live View
Not only does the 3.0-inch LCD monitor on the EOS-1Ds Mark III provide the ability to review your images on a bright and large display, and makes access to the camera setting easier, the camera also has a Live View option, so you can compose and shoot directly from the LCD monitor. Live View also enables you to zoom in and navigate the composition at 5x or 10x normal size, thereby enabling critical manual focus and allowing more attention to detail. You can even choose a grid overlay to aid in framing your shot, perfect for keeping straight lines in your subject straight in your pictures. In the studio, the Live View Function can be used remotely via a computer through the cameras USB connection, or wirelessly or via Ethernet with the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2A attached. In addition, the Live View function adds a totally unique method for near-silent shooting, with two silent shooting modes.
Compatible with UDMA CF Cards
The EOS-1Ds Mark III supports the latest, faster UDMA (Ultra Direct Memory Access) CF memory cards. UDMA-compliant CF cards offer twice the data transfer rate of conventional cards, further enhancing the shooting and post-shooting performance of the EOS-1Ds Mark III.
Compatible with Canon's Full Line of EOS Lenses and Accessories
The EOS-1Ds Mark III is compatible with Canon's world-renowned lineup of professional EF Lenses including over 50 models ranging from 14mm ultra-wide-angle to 1,200mm super-telephoto, and supports Canon's universally acclaimed L Series lenses, and Canon's Image Stabilizer technology. The camera also supports full TTL control with Canon EX series Speedlite flash units and can even support wireless data transfer with the WFT-E2A Wireless File Transmitter.
Powerful Bundled Software
The EOS-1Ds Mark III comes with the latest incarnation of the Canon EOS Digital Solution Disc (Version 15.0) so you can get the most out of your camera. It includes Canon's ZoomBrowser EX (for Windows), ImageBrower (for Macintosh), Digital Photo Professional, Canon's EOS Utility, RAW Image Task, PhotoStitch, and PTP TWAIN Driver. It Just Keeps Looking Better

I have used the Canon 1 Ds Mark III for seven months now, shooting over 6000 pictures in non-professional contexts; I have also been scanning 40 years of slides taken with then-state-or-the-art film cameras (most recently the Canon F-1), so I have lots of bases for comparison. The more pictures I examine, and the more types of places and activities I have photographed, the better the performance of this camera looks.
The 1Ds outperforms film by such a margin that it is like having a 4x5 camera. Even in the best cases for film—contrasty subjects shot with Velvia 50 or Kodachrome 25—the 1Ds image is 2.5-3 times sharper than the slide. In more normal cases, such as 100 ISO or higher film, or lower contrast subjects, or pictures containing small objects with bright colors (such as flowers in a flowerbed) the disparity is 5 to 1, or more. That is both a compliment to the 1Ds and a caution: when you can digitally enlarge the image 3 times farther than 35mm film, you also have one third the depth of field and three times the sensitivity to motion blur.
As I get more experience with this camera, I find more and more advantages: great color rendition, exceptionally accurate spot metering coupled with large dynamic range, convenient handling. So comparing the results to those of a Canon 400, my first impression was that they were just what I expected: like stitching two photos taken with the smaller sensor together. But with more pictures to look at, the advantages of lower noise at all ISOs but especially the higher ones, better color, metering and focusing accuracy, and dynamic range became apparent.
While I am not happy with the weight, the combination of weight and balance lets me hand hold shots at the same or lower shutter speeds than I used with the F-1, despite the need for a three times steadier hand. With care, I can take good hand held pictures at 1/15 with lenses as long as 300mm.
The ability to link spot metering and auto focus point is particularly useful. When the resolution is this high, you can’t rely on depth of field to cover up imprecise focus—even my 14mm lens requires attention to where you are focusing on. (This is how I learned about the valuable custom function of micro-adjustment of auto-focus). And by focusing on one point, and seeing how its exposure looks with a scale calibrated in 1/3 stop increments, it is easy to get the desired exposure on the first try.
The automatic focusing is amazingly fast. I have taken pictures of birds and dragonflies in flight where the subjects’ movements are so erratic that it is hard to keep them in the picture at all, much less centered. Yet the autofocus still works on most of the pictures.
Several reviewers have questioned the need for this many pixels. My response is that the resolution of the camera and lenses allow for a lot of digital zooming: at least 3 times if film is the comparison. So a 24mm f/1.4 becomes a 24-70 or longer.
This zooming ability and the choice of Canon lenses mitigates or reverses the Nikon D3’s high ISO speed advantage of about 1.5 stops (based on my reading of tests—I have not had the good luck to be able to use the D3 yet). For the 24, a Canon lens two stops faster than the best Nikon product available makes the 1Ds a half stop faster. For telephoto, the 300 f/4 lens on the 1D can digitally zoom to a 400 mm while still matching the published resolution of the Nikon; to match it on Nikon you would have to add a 1.4x extender to their 300 f/4, reducing the aperture to 5.6. So the Nikon is only ½ stop faster.
I have tested this low light ability by shooting several pictures at an effective ISO of 25,600—that’s done by underexposing 3 stops at a setpoint of 3000 and resetting the tone curves on the computer. The results are not bad, even in color. Especially after using noise reduction in the free software. I can take pictures by street light at night. The pictures taken at 1/15 actually have more detail in the shadows than I can see with the naked eye. This is actually approaching the physical limits that result from light being divided into photons: most of the noise at a speed of 25,600 on either the 1Ds or the D3 is due not to the limitations of the camera but to the limited number of photons incident on each pixel/color.

As a professional specializing in fine art catalogues and interiors, this camera is a useful addition to my kit (already have an MFDB). Files are extremely fine, if a bit flat. They need a lot of work in ACR.

However, my big crib is that mine came with the dreaded mis-aligned viewfinder. Since everything I do involves either squaring off or horizontal/vertical alignment, this is a serious manufacturing error. And I am not alone. Many others have the same problem. Canon's total lack of any public acknowledgment of the problem is very disappointing. If this was a car, it would be a recall issue. Period.

For this reason and, to some extent price, I can only give it three stars.

Comments about Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

As of Sunday, we have used the EOS 1Ds Mark III for a month of Pet Photography sessions. We knew the full frame technology from the 5D, and so the photo quality is exactly what we predicted. The main yield has been the high-speed action shots with the full frame. In the past, we have used a 7-D for those. The 7-D photos were very good, but because of the noise, we were often restricted in the size of the enlargement we could offer. With the 1Ds, we may lose a bit in the burst, but the tradeoff is we have images that you can blow-up the size of a wall. In fact, our first two shoots were black dogs on white sand beaches. We saw very little color noise in the action shots.
On the negative side, this is a heavy, bulky camera. When you attach a large lens to it... and then try to track a dog at full speed, you get quite a workout. Since our average pet photo shoot lasts about 1.5 hours... all freehand shooting, you can be pretty tired. In fact, we did a 3 hour, 2-location shoot yesterday with our EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM attached and we were tuckered.

Comments about Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I´ve always owned Canon cameras and my new 1Ds Mark III is most definitely the best piece of equipment I´ve had in my hands.
Compared to my old 1Ds Mark II it is so much lighter, faster and amazingly sharp.
It just seems impossible to make a mistake with this perfect piece of equipment.
The price, OK a bit expensive but at the end of the day, totally worth the effort.

Comments about Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

The Canon digital bodies are great, not as much so for many of the lenses, which need periodic alignment service. I have found that this camera combined with Zeiss lenses is hard to beat for 36x48 prints, and even larger prints look great if the image is captured perfectly.

This camera is for professionals which I am not but...It is so easy to use. It is easier to use than my XTI. I have had this camera for 1 month and already feel comfortable using it.

Comments about Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

This was the best camera I ever had until it got wet. I'm not talking about a plunge in water. Just exposure to rain. First time out in the rain and the weather sealing failed. Despite Canon's claims to be weather sealed and stand up in harsh conditions! I bought their best Camera and it failed when put to the test. Do yourself a favor and but a rain cover if you plan on shooting in the rain. I was so confident that it would be fine in the rain. Boy was I wrong!

After using this camera for a year and sending it into the shop with problems 3 times, i finally traded it in for a 5d Mark 11.
The 5d is lighter, better in low light and shoots killer hd video. buy two 5ds instead of a mark 111.

Comments about Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I use this for professional shoots. It's solid, well built, most of the things I have come to expect from Canon. This particular individual camera has a manufacturer defect that I am not sure how to get fixed without losing the camera for a few weeks and that has me baffled and upset. There are 5 pixels on the sensor (I don't know if that's right) that glow when that part of the picture is dark. There are three red, a green, and a blue. They are in every picture when their space is dark (like a wedding tuxedo). I bought the camera because one of my other cameras has a bent pin (my fault) and I needed two woking camras. Now I am going to have to send this one in, too. Can't win!

I've been shooting since 1976 and have used dozens of 35mm, Medium Format and digital SLR. This camera is by far the best in terms of the result and creative options.

I recently sold all my Nikon equipment (D700 + Lenses) on Craigslist in order to make the switch to this camera, and brand. After my first two shoots this past week, its clear to me that the move was well worth it. This summer is going to be serious!

My only issue of course is the price, but this camera will surely pay for itself in the long run.

I got this camera to shoot weddings and portraits mainly. It was suggested to me by another photographer that I should buy a camera with two memory cards.I had 3 semi-expensive Canon lenses. The EF 70-200mm 2.8L IS USM lens, the EF 100-400mm 4-5.6L IS USM Lens, and the EF 100mm 2.8 USM lens, and I'm a Canon Man.I started,in the digital slr world, with an Eos Rebel XT,then the 40D,then the 50D,and now this one.I still use my other cameras mainly for sports, bird photography, etc. because of the high FPS they offer. If you have the means, and are going to be in photography for a while, you should consider this 21.1 megapixel monster.

Comments about Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I was a loyal 35mm film shooter and will always be. The reason I switched is because of convenience and now 35mm digital format exceeds 35mm film quality.

I Chose the 1Ds MkIII over the 5D MkII because Canon added the HD video option to the 5D, a useless feature in my opinion plus the 1Ds MkIII is weather sealed.

I love shooting "Dark" portraits in the style of Andrzej Dragan the resolution and color accuracy of the 1Ds MkIII camera exceeded my expectations for this. I also shoot landscapes when Chicago weather is at its worst which is about 90% of the year!. I love that the camera is weather sealed for this the 1Ds MkIII gets five stars.

The Cons: I had to return the first copy because of the noise the mechanism that shifts the images right side up for viewing was too loud, My second copy made the same noise so I assume its normal but maybe canon could install a more silent one.

I am in debt now after buying the camera and will be for about 2yrs, working part time at a restaurant chain I would have been in debt anyway had I bought the 5D mkII so I decided to go all out and make it count. No regrets at all the 1Ds MkIII is well worth the sweat off my back besides this camera will pay for itself in the long run.

Comments about Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I think this is the greatest camera produced by a legendary company. The images as fantastic and since this is my first pro-camera I think I'm going to have the ride of my life with this.
                          * I normally go out and take photos of my students in their athletic endeavors. I have to say that the quality of the pictures is 2nd to none.
                          * I do enjoy the ease of all the functions it contains. The booklet included is a handful, but the explanation is above average.
                          * The only complaint that I have is the price, but in the long run it will all pay for itself.
