I purchased the Olympus 35mm macro as my first lens since buying the two lens kit with my Olympus E-510. I purchased it with the intent of using it for some indoor photography projects I had in mind.
The "standard" focal length of the Olympus DSLR's is 25mm; which is the equivalent of the 50mm in 35mm film cameras. That makes this macro the 35mm film equivalent of a 70mm telephoto--a mild telephoto--but very useful for macro photography, as well as portraits.
In terms of macro capabilities, this lens does not dissappoint, able to zoom in closer than the more expensive 50mm macro that Olympus offers. The resolution and detail are just stunning, and those who like flower and insect photograhy will find this lens to be a very valuable addition to their kit. This lens is easily the sharpest in the Olympus standard grade line-up, and, in my opinion, has the best image quality.
There is no plastic sun shade with this lens, as the front element is burried so deeply into the barrel, in classic macro lens fashion, that one is not needed.
The lens is incredibly light weight, small, and very well built. The focus speed for "normal" non-macro photography is surprisingly quick and extremely accurate. It's only when one goes into extreme macro close-ups that the focus slows, and is sometimes thrown off, but these are minor quibbles, and one will experience this sort of thing with most auto-focus macro lenses-- certainly not a deal breaker. A majority of the time the lens performs as expected, with excellent results.
The wonderful image quality the lens is capable of is far beyond it's standard grade grouping, and will be useful in whatever type of photography you can think of. I've actually been using it more as a general purpose lens than a macro, and have been very happy with the results.
The only realy negative is that there is some noticable barrel distortion, it's minor, but it's certainly there. That's a bit of a disappointment, as one would expect a macro lens to have as close to zero distortion as possible, or even error more towards pin cushion side of the equation. This minor distortion will not be at all problem for nature and flower photogrpahy, and will only rear it's ugly head in more technical subject matter, like graphic arts and industrial/electronic applications. If you a require a truly distoration free lens, you might be better off with the 50mm macro instead.
Overall, I'm very satisified with the 35mm macro, and find it to be a very useful lens in a wide variety of contexts.

This lens is a lens from the Olympus "Standard Lens" (not high quality) set. Don't expect super sharp results - but also consider that you are not paying much. In good light it performs fairly well. It tends to produce softer images. It works for portraits too. I also have and use the 50mm Macro, which is a higher quality lens. However, what I like about the 35mm is that its magnifcation factor is higher that the 50mm and you can get closer to the subject.

I bought this lens to replace the zuiko 14-45 zoom that was dropped and not worth fixing. It light, fast enough for my photographic needs and I love the Macro feature. I already have plans for a school project of macro-student shot to see who knows their friends and teachers. They will have to identify each other from close-up of eyes, lips, maybe an ear with an earring in it. The lens was delivered by B&H very quickly and I can highly recommend their service. a great safe company to deal with.

I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. I only use Olympus brand DSLR'S and Zuiko lenses... This is my second macro lens and it does take amazing shots. After using it several times, I can honestly say I've found nothing to complain about. [...]

I am usually reluctant to give any lens five stars but this is a very sharp, contrasty lens, particularly for its low price and compact, light design. I use it on an E-PL1 and it is excellent. I use it as a short tele prime along with a Panasonic 20mm f 1/7 and Olympus 50mm f 2, both of which are very sharp. This is definitely a worthwhile lens on M43 when used with an Olympus MMF-2 adapter.

Comments about Olympus Zuiko Digital 35mm f/3.5 Macro ED Lens:
Used on an Olympus E-PL1 Pen with the MMF-2 adapter, this is a very sharp lens and an excellent companion to the Zuiko 50/2 and Panasonic 20/1.7 lenses as part of a very light but super sharp prime lens kit. If you update the firmware on the MMF-2 adapter, then auto-focus speed is decent.
Sharpness and contrast are excellent.
This lens is already quite sharp wide open. It makes a very nice short telephoto and portrait lens as well.

Just received this lens as a gift. Seeing as Im not a professional, and this is my first macro lens, I have nothing to compare it with. I have noticed a hesitance to focus on automatic mode. But am loving the view through a macro lens.

I'm using this lense for Macro on my Olympus E-410. I'm no expert in photography and I find this lense very easy to use. The focus is great on automatic put not always accurate. Simply put the manual focus and zoom with this lense for the best results. For macro use, be as stable as you can and use a tripod if possible. Also, be sure to get the best lighting available or the image will be blurry. This lense is great and with the price tag of [$], it's simply a must. If you have a higher budget, you can go for the 50mm.

For everybody, a 35mm is pretty much basic camera stuff, but this little macro 35mm is a beauty! The focus is super sharp, provides decent lighting, is super light and really cheap!! What else could you want! Oh and solid build as well.

I bought this lens after I sold my ZD 50 f/2 lens and I couldn't be happier. What I like about this lens is it's lightweight (easy to transport) and it's excellent for macro photography (1:1 magnification). It's also less expensive than the 50 and does as good a job for more than half the price. The lens is sharp and produces beautiful colors. Can't go wrong with this lens and I consider it a must have for any Olympus user.

Comments about Olympus Zuiko Digital 35mm f/3.5 Macro ED Lens:
Product does what it's advertised to do and does it well. Clear, crisp close up photos are what I bought the lens for and it delivered! I took a close up shot of a tomato with two flies on it and every detail on the flies were crystal clear! My only suggestion would be some type of manual regarding the camera settings and other useful info with this lens. I'm a beginner at photography so I'm still trying to figure out how to optimize this lens and some helpful hints would have been nice.

I absolutely love this lens. It's my first "real" lens, after the "kit" lenses. It's so sharp - takes AMAZING portraits, and of course crazy close macros. I still cannot believe it's this inexpensive, I highly recommend it. :)

I liked this lens, it is sharp and defines the subject clearly. Price is fine. It does have its downside such as slow focusing which makes it not so good on moving tiny subjects but for still tiny subject, it does deliver. Wish this had a lower aperture but the item does specify that it is 3.5 so it's okay.

What a great addition to my lens stock! Great 1:1 macro shots that are very crisp-great quality! And it's light & compact-I find myself using it for family snapshots as well as serious macro work because it's easy in the hand. It's a little slow on low light focus but I can live with that for the price.
