The Tamron SP AF10-24mm f/3.5 -4.5 Di II is an ultra wide-angle zoom lens. Di II means that is designed for exclusive use on digital SLR cameras with smaller-size imagers (APS-C/DX). Boasting a focal length range of 10 - 24mm, (the 35mm equivalent of 16mm to 37mm) this lens has a varied range of applications for creating dramatic images as it features both ultra-wide and semi-wide angle settings.

The close focusing capability of this lens enables image capture with an exaggerated perspective at the 10mm ultra wide-angle end or with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5 at the 24mm semi-wide-angle. It has Micro Motor to ensure precise and smooth auto focusing.

Note! Tamron SP AF10-24mm f/3.5 -4.5 Di II is not designed for conventional cameras or digital cameras with image sensors larger than 24mm x 16mm

Captures Ideal Range of Focal Lengths With D-SLRs
Since the size of 35mm film format is larger than the image sensor generally used in D-SLRs, a digital camera captures a narrower angle of view than a 35mm film camera even at the same focal length settings. This lens, made exclusively for digital SLR cameras, provides ideal focal lengths to cover the range desired by DSLR shooters.
Fits Smaller-Size Imagers
This lens is designed so the size of the lens' image circle matches that of smaller-size image sensors. In the compact design, it is almost comparable to a lens offering the same angles of view in 35mm film format. 1
Aspherical Lens Elements
The optical system within this zoom lens uses three large-aperture glass-molded aspherical lenses, as well as three hybrid aspherical lenses, which minimize spherical aberrations, coma, and distortion.
Minimum Focusing Distance Across Zoom Range
The close focusing capability of this lens enables the capturing images with an exaggerated perspective at the 10mm ultra wide-angle end or shoot with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5 at the 24mm semi-wide-angle setting with the freedom to create close-ups at the minimum focusing distance of 0.24m throughout the zoom range.

I'd imagine that many people are shying away from this lens due to some of the reviews. Rockwell's ultra-wide comparison is where I first heard about this lens, and it did not do too favorably there...

I was looking for an ultra-wide lens for Nikon DX format, with easy to correct distortion. I was originally looking for the Tokina 11-16, which has gone up in price considerably several times, and NEVER seems to be available. I was also thinking about the sigma, but the inability to correct the distortion easily wide open didn't make me too happy, and I couldn't find one locally to test. The nikon 10-24 isn't available yet, and the 12-24 is too expensive and not wide enough.

So, I decided to check this lens out at a local photo shop, and I'm glad I did. After a few test shots, I ended up purchasing it. It was sharp enough for my needs - A bit soft wide open, but I never shoot wide angle lenses wide open. F/8 looks near perfect to me on all edges and corners, with some slight color fringing that I REALLY had to look to see. The edges are occasionally soft, but I have only noticed this when I am pixel peeping.

It seems surprisingly well built. Metal mount is always nice, and the focus and zoom both have very good feels to them. It just feels RIGHT in my hands. I haven't drop tested it, and I don't plan to. I could see the AF mechanism going out on a bad drop, but that's just pure speculation.

Another plus - There is MORE than enough room to put whatever UV filter you would like on it with no vignetting. I don't know about filter stacking, but again, I never stack filters.

It does have it's quirks. AF stopped on me once when I was switching back and forth from AF to MF. A remount of the lens solved this, and I haven't had this issue since.

I'm also suspicious about the quality control. It looks like I got a good copy, but I can tell that a few out there have not. Just make sure you have a good return policy.

I'm not sure where you could go wrong with this lens. If you pixel peep and need ultimate sharpness wide open, go with the Tokina - It's a pro lens, and it's price has definitely increased to reflect that. I'm sure that the Nikon 10-24 will be an amazing lens as well - of course, at twice the price. For the non-pixel peepers who just want to make great ultra wide photos, it's hard to go wrong here. It's not optical perfection, but it's a freakn good lens.

It all comes down to how you want to use it and what your budget is. Interior shooters, take note - Used in conjuction with a bounce flash, I get super-sharp and relatively distortion free images that look better than any interior shot I have ever taken.

Five stars because I couldn't be happier with this lens for my needs.

EDIT: After a couple of weeks, I've noticed something mentioned in an off-site review in which this lens was described as having a curved focus field - A ')' shape, if you will. After abusing this lens by shooting extremely (And I mean EXTREMELY) close up flat surfaces, I can agree with this. What this means in practice is that test charts and brick walls shot from a foot away may not be as sharp as they could, but real world usage is still great. What this also means is that if you shoot a lot of interiors or other scenes in which you have walls on both sides of you and a center of focus at the rear, the curved field will be very beneficial to the overall sharpness of the image. Just something to be aware of - I'm still happily shooting, it's exactly what I needed.

As every good consumer in this economy does, I did my homework and research to find the best wide angle lens that also incorporated reasonable pricing. The result was my purchase of the Tamron 10-24 DI II.
This lens is not touted specifically as a "pro" lens, and on the contrary some say it is geared more toward amateur, but all things being equal, I decided to try it. Taking it out on the NYC streets for a test run, focus seems to be a bit of an issue, and I noticed it does well focusing in daylight/ sunlight, while it tends to struggle in lower light situations. I found myself trying to compensate in low light by "tricking" it into focal submission wherever possible, and finally having to switch at times to manual. I noticed this same issue with my Tamron 18-270.
There is some softness at the edges and barreling when opened up to 10mm, but nothing that makes me discount it as a better than average wide-angle lens, which would be my overall analysis. The internal motor for the focus is quick, albeit somewhat inconsistant, but the lens accomplished the type of landscape-tall-building-long-street shots I wanted to get. And you can't beat the price.

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Nikon DSLR Cameras:

It's amazing how much you can get off the landscape. It's almost like a
fish-eye, but not. Perfect to capture high buildings, like skyscrapers in New York and Time Square. Tamron, as i know, is a good type of objektiv.
After i buy this objektiv, it's has been just more then any other objektivs i have.

Being new to photography, I am in the learning stage. I read and studied this lens for some time before making the purchase. I live in the countryside and really wanted something beyond a good zoom. Something that would show a new and interesting perspective of the view. The 10 24 took me beyond my normal perspective and makes me really think about what I want to show. I have nothing bad to say. This lens is light and has a very crisp effect.

I have wanted for wide angle lens for awhile now, and noticed this one on sale along with a rebate. It had mixed but generally good reviews so, for the price, I decided to try it. Images are very sharp. There is some distoration when wide opened, but I am able to correct that to an acceptable amount in Lightroom. My only compliant initially is that it seems a big tight when I put it on my Nikon D80, but after a few lens changes, I didn't really notice the difference between this and my other lenses.

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Nikon DSLR Cameras:

I don't have personal experience with the Nikon version of this lens but after having used this lens on a 3 month trip to Europe I could not be happier. The photos it takes come out beautiful.

I did a lot of research before purchasing this lens and read a lot of reviews giving this lens a bad review when put up against the Nikon. Yes, it may not be as good as the Nikon but it is also $500 cheaper. I also found that most complaints were centered around vignetting, chromatic aberration, and slow focus.

First, if you are concerned with vignetting and chromatic aberration, you are probably someone who uses photoshop and knows that you can correct those things in editing. I didn't notice these things being problems in most of my photos though.

I also don't believe that the speed of focus hurt my shooting- its a lens I used primarily for architecture and landscape photography where fast focus isn't a need.

Overall, great lens at this price point. I would certainly recommend it.

I do a great number of architectural interior stills.
The 15 mm DX focal length furnishes wide angle images without extreme distortion.
Corner fall-off is minimal at smaller apertures. Some aberration noticeable on exteriors when shooting bare tree branches.
Shoots great 120 & 180 pans without dealing with distortion from fisheye lenses.
I got what I expected from this price level lens. I am totally satisfied

Comments about Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Nikon DSLR Cameras:

I love this lens. I only need a Super wide lens for a few things I have been holding off for 2 years. and trying to piece together the images. I used the lens to shoot interiors shots of a home i was renting ...

THe images are great and well worth the small amount paid for this lens.

B&H pricing was not the cheapest but very close. But i would not go anywhere else b/c they have reliable and top shelf customer service. I have used B& H for years and always well b/c they stand behind everything they sale.
I have made ordering mistakes before and they simply just help me get the right order and help with the returns...
I am not being paid nor was this a gift. I own Video Media Productions and i also buy equipment to install into my clients offices..

A remarkable lens at its price point--clear through the aperture range; less "fisheye" distortion than I anticipated, quick and reliable focusing. Only negative noted was that the lens cover didn't clasp as securely as the Nikon lenses do--annoying; lens leash is a necessity. Makes a very nice companion to my suite of lenses.

I decided to get this lens for my trip to NYC.
It's incredible, you can shoot every building as you want and the quality (contrast, saturation) of the lens is really good for me.
I'm just disapointed of the distortion (even if it's normal) of people who are on the side of the picture

I use this lens on my D300s, I took a few photos and enlarge the image in the LCD to the max and I could see not just details but small text. I can see some distortion but it is expected with lens this wide, the user have to be careful the placement of the camera to reduce the effect. The lens is sturdy and well balanced on the camera. The zoom ring has good width to it and it is smooth with good damping. I do have couple of complaints; one is the focusing ring turns when auto focusing, sometimes it brushes my fingers on the zoom ring. The second concern is that when I use flash, the exposure is not as consistent as I like, I have to do more testing to be able to tell, I suspect it has to do with the extra wide view. The price is unbeatable for the quality and it is well worth the 5 stars.

My first impression when I unpacked the lens was... It looks flimsy. The lens is light and made of plastic. The ring is a metal one at least.

Once on the D200 the lack of weight is less of an issue. It focus fairly well. It hunts a bit when trying to focus in dark situations or on subjects with lack o details. Zoom and focus rings are rugged and work well. And I must admit it feels good when using it. (I'd still be afraid of dropping it)

I've used it extensively in the last few weeks. Different conditions and settings. The range is great for Cityscapes and landscapes. It also allows for interesting compositions.

Colors are bright and well contrasted.

I had read reviews about the lens and knew it had some CA issues and was soft on the edges. I was not prepared for such big CA issues!! Some of the shot I took where not even salvageable. So be beware. Even stopped down at F8 it is pretty apparent.

If you need an Ultra wide for your pleasure an for a fun walk around lens, you should have lot of fun using it, but if you intend on using it for gigs or professional use, I'd suggest you steer away from this lens.

What I don't understand is the amount of good review this lens have amongst "pro" ans "Semi-pro" photographers on BH...

I have owned this lens for 2 months for professional wedding use on my Nikon D7000 and D300s. Previously I've owned a variety of fisheye and general wide-angle lenses. This lens completely distorts the subjects, making them look like they've been stretched vertically. Very disappointing, very over priced very unhappy.

Bought the lens while it was on sale here in B&H. I still need to learn more in using this lens as it is my first "Tamron" brand & ultra wide-angle zoom and this lens is fascinating.

My observations...it is sturdy, a little heavy compared to a 18-55. Images are on the soft side, not as sharp. AFocusing seems a little slow, especially when indoors. Also when using the built in flash, lens outline/shadow appears in the 10-21mm range.

As I said, I'm on the "learning" curve on using this lens and for the price compared to a Nikon-- I think I will keep this!
