The Tokina 100mm f/2.8 - AT-X M100 PRO D is a macro lens capable of life-sized (1:1) reproduction at 11.8" (30 cm).

The lens' multi-coating has been re-engineered to match the highly reflective silicon based CCD and CMOS sensors in today's digital SLR cameras. This lens gives the best of both worlds because optics still give full coverage and excellent sharpness on 35mm film. A macro lens that can handle both the digital and film worlds with ease.

Note! AF not supported by D40 and D60 cameras.

Optimized for use with digital cameras
Focus limit switch that can lock the focus out of the closest focus making it focus faster when used as a moderate telephoto lens that is excellent for portraits as well

The Tokina engineers really did a great job on this lens. I use it on my D200 and now a D300. This lens performed great at F22 where some others in the Nikon line, seem to degrade. I am not a technical whiz at why, but know that this lens is fantastic at the F16, f22 stops where you need that additional depth of field on macro work. I like the push pull collar for manual to auto focus selection. It is very handy and a pleasure to work with. The coatings work as advertised.. helping to work better on the reflective digital sensors. The colors come out very true and highly saturated. I highly recommend this lens and at the price it is a real bargain.

I have only had this lens 2 weeks, and am now getting the hang of using it to take macro shots of insects.
The focus is quite fast even in lowish light, and the sharpness is okay, but not great.

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:

I bought this lens from B&H in 2008, so i have had it for a while and used it extensively.
I am a Nikon owner and I shoot pictures for a living. All of my lenses are Nikon, but in 2008 I needed a macro for a job I was asked to do and I was all ready to buy the Nikon when I read a review of this lens in one of the major photo magazines I receive. Buying a Tokina was not way up there on my list, but this review was well written and documented, and the Tokina was almost half the price. Cost and effect came into play. The job wasn't that big and it would be a one time deal, so I elected to buy, with great trepidation, the Tokina.
Three years later i can tell you I never looked back. I was amazed at the sharpness and contrast of this lens. For mactro work it is fun and easy to use, and for portraits, well the sharpness leaves nothing to be desired. I'm glad I second guessed myself on this purchase. I have recommended this lens to a few other photographer friends and they too have thanked me for the quality and savings. As a side note, I have used the Nikon macro and honestly, the only advantage is the Nikon is built like the proverbial tank, but the quality of the photograph was, in my humble opinion, not as good as the Tokina. Lesson learned for sure.
Because of this lens, I no longer jump right in and buy Nikon, I do as much research as I can now, and although I love all my Nikon lenses because of their pro build quality, I now consider other lenses, even though I almost always buy the Nikon after researching. I will tell you this caution to watch for; there are three small screws on the front of the lens barrel. Two have worked their way out causing the front plastic lens shade holder to fall off. I am in contact with Tokina, trying to get two replacement screws. I'll let you know about customer service after I hear back from them. Bottom line, for the money, this is one great macro lens

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:

This lense is VERY good for macro. Being an amateur, I use autofocus most of the time, but one this particular lense i find the switch from one mode to the other so convenient... Very good for macro shots or portraits. I have the impression that this lense also restitutes colorsand light a bit better than my other lenses - it looks like crispier.
I sometimes wish i had a VR on this lense as it is really useful for more than just macro (very sharp 100mm lense, with great control of the DOF).

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:

Lens produces sharp images - the AF/MF togle is easy and well designed - glass is well protected and deep set.

AF can sometimes take a while to hunt for correct focus - there is a 'limit' option to help.

Really solid and well made lens - gives you confidnece that you have a quality piece of kit in your hands.

I've had some issues with non-macro shots not being crisp and being overexposed. And in recent test shots, I've come to see significant over exposure on all photographs when the camera is set to Aperture priority or Shutter Speed priority. Easy enough to compensate - but still a hassle that I would prefer wasn't there. I have contacted THK and am waiting to hear back from them.

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:

The Nikkor has some features that the Tokina doesn't. It has vibration reduction obviously, as well as internal (probably faster) focusing, weatherproofing, and Nikon's superior coatings.

The Tokina though is a beautiful lens and really delivers for its price. The optics are absolutely great - sharp and distortion-free. Without vibration reduction or a silent wave motor, it weighs about 9 ounces less and focused at infinity is significantly smaller. The hood is really unnecessary on this lens since the front element is so far recessed in the barrel, but Tokina does make great lens hoods too. Additionally, the Tokina focus clutch mechanism and large focus ring makes manual focus easy and precise.

If you plan to use your 100mm macro lens as a medium telephoto for low light shooting, then maybe you will miss the vibration reduction of the Nikkor. If you already have a medium telephoto or telephoto zoom with vibration reduction, or you prefer not to use vibration reduction, you will not have regrets about using this lens.

As an amateur and first time user of these lenses, I am amazed at how easy this lens was to use on my Nikon D7000 in manual mode. This is the only non Nikon lens I have and I rate it highly with my others. With my larger Lenses I am practicing using Manual focus only and this Lens is making that much easier.

I use this lens on my D7000 and it's excellent for Macro. My insect shots are super clear. The focus is fast enough, and is very precise. The noise isn't a problem unless you use the lens to film, but you just have to use an external mic. Combined with a decent flash, you can set the aperture to f25 and get the whole insect in focus. It's also very easy to make nice portrait with a blur background. I really enjoy this lens.

I was looking for a good but affordable macro lens for my Nikon D7000 and kept finding glowing reviews of this Tokina 100mm f2.8. The reviews were spot-on when they spoke of the sharpness and ease of use. I've only had it a few days but already love it and can see it doubling as a great portrait lens. Yes, it is a bit heavy but I would describe that as solid construction. I very much like the push-pull of the focusing ring to shift from auto focus to manual. I'm just learning to take macro photos but this lens prompts me to do more.

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:

I've used the lens for both macro and "portrait" type shots for about 2 weeks on my Nikon D90. Flawless performance so far. I only wish it had Nikon's VR,as I have been spoiled by Nikon lenses with the VR feature. The Tokina is definitely best used with a tripod or monopod, whether it be for distant shots or macro. If the camera is steadied, photo quality is perfect and sharp.

I had this lens for only 2 weeks and has been on my D700 since. Probably will stay there for long time.I have shut every thing from insects to landcapes all with great results, expecially in Macro mode.I love the switch from AF to Manual, I think that the same system should be implemented by all the lens manufacturers: very fast and easy, not try to remember where the switch or button is.Yes I am very pleased, and the price?...........Buy it you like it![...]

Image quality is superb. Great for portraits too, with surprisingly good bokeh, and a good auto-focus for longer distances (ie people portraits). Auto-focus is a bit noisy as others have said, but it's accurate and adequately fast for portrait subjects. The auto/manual clutch system is great, though I usually leave it in manual mode. Auto-focus doesn't do much for macro, as most already know, but the clutch is a nice addition nonetheless. Needless to say, macro quality is top-notch.

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:

Really nice lens. A Ken Rockwell recommendation! It is easy to use but does have a lens creeping that is distracting. Yes, you can use the focus restrictor thingie on it, but when it is creeping while on a tripod pointed down on what I'm photographing it is irritating. That being said, for the price, there is probably nothing better out there. Got it as something we can use with the FX and DX cameras -- and works well. Basically an equivalent to 135 on a DX and works nicely.

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:

Recently purchased this lens after extensive research of this and other comparable lenses from Nikon, Tamron, and Sigma.

Been shooting with this Tokina now for just under a couple of weeks and what you've been hearing is the absolute truth!! This lens is wonderful! The images are sharp and crisp! And the color is absolutely beautiful! Will be using it with a full frame D700 soon, so I'm certain that those images will be nothing less than spectacular!

My only gripe would be that it is a bit difficult in low light. Though it is a 2.8, it adjusts because of the extreme magnification, so know that proper lighting will be a must for the "in your face" close-ups!

Aside from that, know that this lens doubles up as a wonderful portrait lens as well! The DOF is great! No question on this buy! Nearly half the price of the Nikkor equivalent, this is one of the better deals for an awesome Macro lens!
