The MT-24EX is a twin-flash set-up (similar to a ringflash) for the EOS system that has every feature and capability imaginable. Employing Canon's E-TTL, it takes full advantage of the flash performance of the EOS-1V, EOS-3, and other E-TTL supported cameras by allowing for shutter speeds above the normal sync range. Twin flashes fire at even power, or can be varied over an eight-stop range for dramatic directional lighting that emphasizes the relief of the subject. One or more 580EX, 550EX, 430 EX, or 420EX Speedlites can be used as wireless slaves along with the MT-24EX. The controller unit has an illuminated, informative LCD panel. Accepts optional hi-capacity battery packs.

I owned Canon's Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX and later replaced it with the Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite. I have taken thousands of close-up pics with both, so this review will assist those considering both these options.
These flash units are essential if you are a serious about macro photography. You will be using these units for one of the following reasons:
• As a primary light source when there is insufficient ambient light for sharp images or to obtain good depth of field.
• As a primary light source to create a 'black background' around the macro subject, a look unnatural to my eye but liked by some.
• In bright sunlight/high shadow conditions as fill-flash to create more even light and reduce contrast.
The Twin Lite MT-24EX is a better solution to the Ring Lite MR-14EX in nearly all respects, as follows:
• The dual, directed light sources create subtle shadows and a more natural and pleasing three dimensional effect. The Ring Lite MR-14EX on the other hand produces a comparatively flat looking image.
• The MT-24EX can project light some distance, well beyond the range of the MR-14EX. There will often be times, for example when after taking a close-up of the flower of some shaded forest herb one will want to shoot a little further back to frame a larger part of the plant. The MT-24EX is superbly versatile in this respect, whereas if you have the MR-14EX attached to your lens, at this stage you will often have a problem, as it may not project light far enough to obtain a well exposed image.
The MR-14EX is only slightly superior to the MT-24EX in one aspect, namely that for close up work it emits a more diffuse light which can be preferable when some subjects are comprised of pale or pastel colours (such as white or mauve flowers).
If you can afford it, the MT-24EX is to be much preferred. It does what the MR-14EX does at extreme close up, provides a more pleasing, three dimensional image, and is versatile enough to transit between close-up and greater distance photography between shots, which is a major advantage and convenience.
The MT-24EX with its E-TTL functionality produces consistently well exposed images, and the control unit interface allows for tweaking of light output if one is not quite satisfied with the result.
This product does what any macro photographer needs it to do, namely capture great close-up images. However, there are a few niggles that detract a little from an excellent product.
The control unit is somewhat somewhat bulky and dated, and in need of a refresh (as occurred when the Speedlite 580EX replaced the 550EX some years ago).
The arms that connect the main unit to the lamps can be quite floppy when one uses it on the end of the short EF-S 60 mm macro lens and these can then get in the way during close-up positioning – in this regard the Nikon solution is neater.
The attachment ring is designed for a 52 mm diameter lens whereas Canon's premium macro lens , the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM has a 67 mm diameter. One needs to buy the 67 Macrolite Adapter to ensure compatibility, which is not an optimum solution, partly because the attachment is less secure than the end of a lens.

This flash appears to be very good at providing light in macro situations. It allows powering both lights individually and you can rotate them around the lens (to a point). However, this flash is using noticably older tech than the 580 EXII, which is very quiet, has a better mounting system onto the flash shoe, and offers more custom functions. The MT-24EX feels quite old by comparison.
Finally, this flash will not fit on my 100mm f2.8 IS Macro without an adapter, and when you use the adapter, the flash will not fit on the adapter if you have a lens filter on the adapter. You have to put the lens filter on the front thread of the flash mount. Overall this is very unacceptable. This flash is quite expensive, and given the popularity of the new 100mm IS Macro, this flash should be bundled with the adapter, or better yet, updated to new tech and actually made to fit the new flagship macro.

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Ringlite Flash:
This is what you need for macro photography, especially if you're going to reach out with a longer (150 or 180mm) macro lens. If you are only using a short(er) macro, the Ring Lite will do. This does everything it says it will do, but keep in mind, when you attach this rig, it is not easy or comfortable to be hiking around with it for hours. It is well-made, comes with very useful bag. It allows a great deal of specific controls, and you will need them to achieve good macro photos

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Ringlite Flash:
Amazing product. To use a filter on this flash, buy one to fit the flash, as it screws right on or use one on your lens with outside threads. 100 f2.8L from canon requires the adapter (67) and this will screw onto the lens or the filter. Now this flash is used in conjunction with a mini TT1/TT5 on my rig, and that remote flash is controllable via the MT-24EX. Thats right, full manual ratio lighting on the MT-24 flash, and full manual control of a remote 580EXII. Effectively, 3 zones of light for macro under full control of the flash. It also has lamps which can be used for focusing or aiming your flashes.
When mounted, the lights can be rotated around the mounting ring, or the ring rotated. This gives you full 360 degrees of rotation, so placement is easy.
Will not create red eye if used for portraits.

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Ringlite Flash:
Used for mostly floral and close up, for which it is intended. Tried making my own rig up, which worked and was flexible, but weighed about 10lbs! Should have got the 24EX first and saved myself some grief.
The 67mm macrolite adapter is required for the 2.8L Macro and also a set of difusers to soften the light.
Easy to use straight out of the box. The background tends to be dark, this can be overcome using slave flashes to light the background, which can be triggered by this unit.

Comments about Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Ringlite Flash:
I am using this equipment for macro photography, both for forensic work and for some scientific photography. I have also used it for some portrait work. In combination with my Canon 100 F2.8L macro lens this system produces outstanding results.
This flash allows you to vary the position of the flash tubes around the lens and control the light output ration of the flashes which gives you control over shadows and permits the creation of great dimensionality in your images. It also works as a wireless controller for other Canon ETTL flashes. I have positioned 580 EX II units to provide even greater control of subject background lighting.
One reviewer said that you can't use a filter on your lens when using this rig. With the Canon 100 F2.8L I am able to use filters as normal.
This is an awesome tool!
Remember for some lenses you will need to get an adaptor.

I will highly recommend to the store to sell this product as a kit with adapters for different kind of macro lenses, I had no idea I needed one for the Canon 100mm macro lens until I try to use it, I had to order one and wait until arrived to use it, that was a waste of time.
This flash unit works like magic and I recommend it to anybody that wants to see their pictures so vivid in colors and details

Using for Canon EF MP-E 65mm macro, at f/16, 1/125, ISO 100 may get the pictures icredible quality. But at 5x needed one more flash, e.g. 580EX II. I recommended using it with camera manual mode.

I wish canons twin flashes were wireless like the Nikon model. The light is somewhat harsh but with the Sto-fil difussers you have many options to make the light softer. Best of all is you can get the shot no matter what the light conditions.

This is a must for macro photos, as the regular flash does not do well. Easy to set up on camera, but does add weight. Works well on my EOS 60D with 100mm macro or 180mm macro. Do need the adapter rings to mount on these lens. A little pricey, but worth it.

Just started to use the product, but so far I am very positive. I have used it to test on macro photos of flowers. I appreciate the possibility to angle the two flashes independently and also control them independently of each other.
And so far I have not discovered any negative things, but that might come later after using it more extensively.

Macro photography has been my passion. Since I started, I struggled to get the best lighting as possible and have done many DIY props.
In the end, I decided to stop all the nonsense and get myself a Canon MT-24EX Twin lights. Then miracles started to happen.....no more bad lighting, no more excuse for a bad shot, no more dark areas, no more difficult editing....and the list goes on.
Macro maniacs.....GET THIS LIGHT!
By the way, it can be used for other applications too.
