The Fujifilm FinePix S100fs (Film Simulation) digital camera provides an all-in-one solution for photo enthusiasts and advanced amateur photographers seeking the manual controls and functionality of a Digital-SLR, without the hassle and expense of additional lenses and other accessories. It is equipped with a 14.3x Fujinon zoom lens (28 - 400mm equivalent) to capture a broad range of subjects from wide-angle landscapes to extreme telephoto for sports and wildlife shooting. It also has Fujifilm's SuperCCD VIII HR with 11 MegaPixels of resolution for sharp, detailed pictures, and the RP (Real Photo) III processor that provides fast operation and advanced shooting capabilities. The FinePix S100fs also incorporates some of the features found in the FinePix S5 Pro - Fujifilm's flagship professional camera; including film simulation (fs) modes, advanced bracketing functions, and settings that expand the camera's dynamic range to a range similar to that of negative film.
The FinePix S100fs is well suited to shooting in low light conditions with ISO capabilities of up to ISO 6400 at 6 MegaPixels and an incredible ISO 10,000 at 3 MegaPixels. Photographers will appreciate the ease of use afforded by the camera's Dual Image Stabilization system which combines optical image stabilization and digital picture stabilization for sharp images that do not exhibit blur resulting from subject or camera movement. Portrait or group pictures are made easy with Fujifilm's acclaimed Face Detection 2.0 Technology with Automatic Red Eye Removal.
The camera also provides versatility when it comes to framing and viewing your pictures. The high resolution 2.5" Wide View LCD display provides for smooth viewing and the ability to easily frame your images from odd angles thanks to its tilting capability. The Electronic viewfinder (EVF) both saves power and allows for easier framing of your images when shooting under very bright daylight conditions. The High-Speed Preview function allows you to immediately view the entire content of your memory card - playing back your captured images at a speed of 10 fps which makes it easy to retrieve the image you want. Thanks to the high-resolution of the LCD, users can display, and clearly view up to 100 thumbnail images simultaneously in a 10 x 10 array, so that you can quickly find and select specific photos to view or print.
Other helpful features found on the FinePix S100fs include the ability to add an external flash unit - either on the hot shoe, or off camera using the PC Socket; Full Manual Photographic Control for total control of the camera settings; a Movie Mode that captures VGA quality clips at 30 fps with sound; High-Speed Continuous Shooting with the ability to capture up to 7 frames per second (at 3 MP resolution); and compatibility with xD-Picture, SD and SDHC type memory cards.

Positives:
- Excellent picture quality
- Handling like a DSLR
- A Plethora of adjustable settings
- Very useful Zoom Range
- Very good monitor; folding action very useful
- Battery life appr. 600 pictures (jpg, no flash)
- Slot for xd-card and SD-card
- Vibration reduction works great
Negatives:
- Not on the cheap side
- Somewhat bulky and heavy, despite not using AA batteries
I bought this camera as replacement for my (aging) DSLR, because I didn't want to tote all kinds of different lenses around anymore. I use the camera for all kinds of photos: Airshow, family, portrait, wildlife, nature. While it does not quite have the same picture quality in low light situations as a DSLR, it performs up to par in normal good lighting conditions. It handles like a DSLR, while the big zoom lens makes it a very versatile tool. Especially at Airshows, were each changing of the lens has the potential to contaminate the inside of the camera with dust and particles, it comes in handy that you don't have to care about this. There are some features, that I consider a mere gimmick (like the Film Simulation thing - I could very well live without that), but ohter features are very good. like the vibration reduction and the dynamic range increase.
In summary, this camera is an almost prefect replacement for an entry DSLR, and the few limitations pale in comparison to the versatility it provides.

I'm not a pro, but I am very serious about freezing time in photo form, and worked for 3 years in camera sales.
I will say that I was expecting more from this camera than it actually delivers - mainly in the area of speed and RAW quality. So, this review is written with a sigh of disappointment.
Firstly, I expect a camera to be able to take the photo when I click the shutter... not the case with this one - capturing fast motion is near impossible (and I have a pro trigger finger), and there is an obscenely long lag between photos, and the time it takes to load after the play button is hit. This is the biggest reason I'll be selling this camera soon. With today's advancements in technology - I would put it in the realm of unacceptability.
It does take beautiful photos that need very little editing (thanks to the CCD sensor). It tends to underexpose by more than what it looks like in the LCD, and it's so contrasty, it's not really fixable, even when shooting raw. The noise is also out of control (but no more so than any other camera in this catagory)
It's also more cumbersome than I expected (especially after shooting with 35lbs of equipment! This was much less of a relief than I'd hoped!). The Lens cap especially is an enormous irritant for me.
So - I think this camera would be wonderful for someone who take photos on auto 90% of the time, macro users (the macro quality is awesome!) and those who won't know the difference, of course.Patience is a requirement for anyone who will love this camera.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix S100fs Digital Camera:
Previous to purchasing the Fuji FinePix S100FS, I regularly used a Fuji Finepix S800, which was for its size and cost, a fabulous camera with tremendous capabilities. Having read so many glowing reviews regarding the FinePix S100FS, I decided to purchase one, so that I could expand upon the features of my smaller FinePix S800, which I still continue to use at times.
Both cameras have similar control layouts and menus, so the learning curve for the new Fuji was really not that steep. Because of the expanded features of my new S100FS, I needed to spend a few days to thoroughly acquaint myself with its expanded capabilities.
To be brief, I am amazed at the qualities of this very solid camera and its ability to provide breathtakingly vibrant photographs. The 28-400 zoom lens is fantastic, as is the ability to burst shoot fifty photos at 7 fps. I have captured some remarkable shots this way..... shots that I would have missed otherwise!
I am thrilled with this camera! Be sure to thoroughly read through the manual to discover all the exciting features that this camera possesses. Even if you own a digital SLR and have a multiple prime lens assortment, you won't want to overlook this one piece, all-around camera. You just may capture that one, priceless, spur of the moment photo opportunity, that would otherwise be lost forever.

Great one-size-fits-most solution for an upscale amateur. This camera's strength is in its emulation of Fuji's popular film types. A real bargain.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix S100fs Digital Camera:
This is the first non-Canon camera I've bought in almost 30 years. I'm old-school (owned an AE-1 and two A-1s) and only went digital four years ago when I got a Canon Powershot S2 IS for Father's Day. That's a nice machine but I felt creatively limited; but I was also tired of lugging around a bunch of lenses for my SLRs. I bought the Fuji after reading all the positive reviews, and I can only add: WOW!!
It has all the bells and whistles -- extreme ISO range, a great zoom lens, and more setting options than I could shake a stick at, if that was my idea of a good time. (Sorry, Groucho!) I just took it on vacation to Vegas and the Grand Canyon. I got shots worthy of 8x10 or larger prints. This weekend I took flower shots at the NY Botanical Garden and was very pleased with the two macro settings. The Fuji did everything I asked it to, and I look forward to testing it even further. Obviously, the 28-400 zoom by itself wouldn't meet a pro's needs as a primary camera, but it's just short of pro-worthy IMHO. One negative is that it's a bit of a battery hog. Make sure you have a spare battery fully charged if you're going to shoot all day. It would also be better if the LCD could rotate around to a covered position like my Canon and many other cameras.

Wonderful for every day shots. Good color, lots of features. The zoom is great.
However, if you're looking for a sports camera under low light, this camera is not for you.
A basketball games without flash? Forget it. The camera is just not fast enough. Turning the live view off, just allows you to use the EVF, which is still slow. It would have been better to have a regular view finder to obtain faster shots.
For everything else, this camera will always be with me.

Advanced amateur; this is my second Fuji digital. The camera is large but not uncomfortable. In general it is easy to use except in macro mode and manual focusing. Good colors, sharpness and the sensor for black and white is excellent. At high ISO the camera is grainy. It is a good camera if you like them that big.

I was a pro wedding photographer who used Canon SLR's but after a bad Motorcycle accident and a back broken in 8 places, I just could not carry around all those lenses anymore... I purchased this camera from B&H 2 weeks ago and it is amazing... Only negative I can find is a short battery life... I had a Canon SX10-IS before this camera and there is no comparison...I have ordered other items from B&H in the past[...] I will continue to buy from them for all my photo needs...

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix S100fs Digital Camera:
I was initially worried about the chromatic abberations described by others, but just don't see them. Not at all, and I've been looking for them. Have used it now at three weddings...amazing images, way better quality than the s-9000/9100. The image stabilizer and higher ISO capabilities make it much better in lower light, you just have to remember to turn the stabilizer on when you need it, or it takes more battery power. Face recognition slows the focus speed a bit, but I prefer to leave that off. With the Vivitar 285 flash, which automatically reads the amount of light needed, and the camera on "P" setting, you get perfect lighting in darker environments like reception venues. And the macro setting and wonderful zoom mean way less lugging around of lenses and worrying about your equipment when you can't watch it. My assistant shoots with a Canon 40D and I like my Fuji images from this camera better than hers. Went through two battery charges in about 1000 images, better than other reviews led me to expect, but that could be because of using an external flash and turning off the IS when not needed. Must read the manual, this is not a point and shoot, but I believe it is a fabulous option for wedding pros who are tired of missing shots while changing lenses or lugging around two (heavier) cameras at once.

I use this camera for personal, as well as professional photography. It is lightweight, easy to operate and nowhere near as bulky as my Canon 10D was. I love the 28-400mm zoom, as well as the Macro and Ultra Macro feature, too! On my first weekend with this camera, I shot on Mackinac Island. Found a photo I liked and placed in my first photo contest. Nuff said. (and no, I haven't found anything to point out, negatively)

- Good grip in hands, no excessive weight
- Very good rear display
- Gives you full control about the esposure
- Film simulation is cool
- Very good exposure control
- Well made, good materials
- Ergonomics
- Very good image stabilization system
- Lens performs very well in 400mm
Cons:
- HUGE chromatic aberration
- Built in JPEG compression induces some annoying errors in the image. Same from FinePix Viewer Raw converter.
- Lens pretty soft below 35mm equiv. Corners lacks definition
- WHY, WHY, WHY you can't shoot RAW 3:2 ???
- Macro is so-so

I am very very happy with this camera. This is my eighth digital camera and I know after using it I made no mistakes by buying it. I love the camera alot and when I bought I it was between the Fuji S100FS Finepix and the Nikon D300 and I know the D300 is much better but for then difference in price I know I made the right choice.
