Well, I never did, but if I had thought about it I'd have realized something. F/2.8 is fast glass. F1.8 is faster, right? Well, yes and no. I have the EF 50mm f/1.8. Love it. But I assumed that f/1.8 is faster than f/2.8 accross the board. Well, I got this wonderful 70-200 and tried it out. Would've liked to have the IS version but it's $500 more and a buddy who has this lens told me I'd have no problems with camera shake for what I do. He was very right. I put on my f/1.8 lens and put my 40D in Av mode and set it for f/2.8. Aimed it at a random target outdoors in shade and half pressed the shutter button. The camera chose 1/60th for shutter speed. OK. Now, I put on my new white lens and set it at f/2.8 and aimed at the same spot and half pressed. Guess what the 40D picked for shutter speed??? Give up? 1/1250!!! That's FFFAST glass! This is a huge f/2.8 compared to a small f/1.8. Makes a big difference. Stop wasting your time reading reviews and buy this lens! Oh. Image quality? Bokeh? Build quality? Nothing short of spectacular. This lens is everything they say it is. I gave it 5 stars because 12 stars was not available here. It is heavy but I won't list that as a con. I used the lens this past weekend to shoot a big fancy wedding. Took my tripod and monopod just in case...never used either, hand held the whole time - zero problems. Seriously, I've taken some best-ever shots with this bad boy. Why are you still reading? Canon, I love you.

I was in a dilemma between this and 70-200 F4 IS version but decided to take a chance.Except the fact one step larger than F4 rest of the things are against it.Very heavy, blurry images on hand held.Definitely non IS is a no no unless you have a tripod.Looks Majestic and definitely a head turner and good in low light.I already returned it and order the F4 IS version. Some day will buy the F2.8 IS version.Till then.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens:
I use to have the IS version but sold it to upgrade to the MKII lens. I never got around to buying the MKII lens but couldn't live without this focal length any more. Since the lens arrived it has not left my camera. It seems to be a hair sharper than my old IS version but I will have to do some detailed comparisons to be sure. If you do not need "IS" this lens is a bargain!

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens:
I've periodically borrowed this lens from a friend for over a year now, and this past month I finally decided to take ownership of one myself. Having used it on the 5D MkII and 60D, I have found it an extraordinary performer in weddings, events, football games, and performances for both full frame and crop sensors.
Despite two newer and more expensive models available, I consider it one of the best lenses Canon has ever made.
The one thing that has annoyed me about the lens is that, brand new and out of the box, the lens hood attaches pretty roughly. I know this is because both are new components that haven't been smoothed with usage, but the attachment was rougher than what I've experienced on other lenses.

This lens is FAST and exact. Perfect focusing on auto and beautiful bokeh! Great for portraits and sports shots. I'm glad I sprung for it. I use it with a 5D MK II.

After reading all the great reviews on this lens I decided to purchase the Canon 70-200mm F2.8L for myself. This lens exceeded all of my expectations , which were pretty high to begin with. The speed and clarity are amazing and I've been able to capture some great wildlife shots with it.I didn't purchase the IS version and worried that my images might not be sharp , but the quality of the images are amazing even when hand holding this lens. The one drawback is that the lens is heavy but with all of the other stellar features , it is quickly becoming my favorite lens. I would definitely recommend the Canon 70-200 to anyone looking for professional quality images.

I shoot firefighters both urban and wildland. I use this as a tool. The lens has been exposed to dust, smoke, dropped it several times, water, direct air retardent drops and it keeps on performing at a top level. Yes, it has been to the shop twice for a tune-up/clean and comes back working like new. I like to shoot at nite with only av-lite, rarely use flash. Owned it for about 10 years. I shoot with 2 bodies and the 70-200 is always on one of them.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens:
Great lens. I had the f/4L version, but it keeps malfunctioning, so I upgraded to this one. I've rented the more expensive f/2.8 models and loved them. I couldn't afford those price tags, so I went with this one without IS, etc. It's heavy but works great! Great addition to my wedding lens family!

This obviously a great lens. IS would be great, but for over $1000 in price disparity, I can live without it. Even w/out IS, this is a heavy lens. Make sure you have plenty of light or a steady hand/tripod with this lens.

more then the 70-200 f/2.8 with Images stabilization.
I've owned both and find that i never used the IS on the other lens and this version is EXTREMELY quick. OUTSTANDING in low light. slightly smaller and narrower through the barrel of the lens then the IS version [both still use 77mm filter]. Save yourself a few hundred $ and buy this lens. great value!!

What can I say about this lens? This lens is the first L series lens that I have ever owned. Wow, it is more than I had hoped for. It is super fast, and the images are super sharp. It is a bit heavy, but that is a minimal problem.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens:
I'm a semi-pro photographer and who does a lot of concert photography, and this is my favorite lens to use. It's range is perfect to get every shot you need and can keep up with motion if you can. The only down side to this lens is how heavy it is. Being that I use a 5D II with a battery pack, by the time you add this weight, it is a work out to shoot anything. I would definitely recommend this to anyone starting their lens collection, its a great intro to the telephoto family.
