Canon EOS 40D SLR Digital Camera (Camera Body)
The Canon EOS 40D SLR Digital Camera is a superb choice for advanced amateur photographers and entry-level professionals. It incorporates an enhanced, 10.1-megapixel CMOS imaging sensor with the proprietary and super-efficient DIGIC III image processor together with a completely redesigned auto-focus sensor.
Ideal for shooting - and actually capturing - speed-sensitive subjects such as wildlife-nature shots as well as a wide variety of action and sports scenes, the combination of Canon's latest processor, DDR SDRAM high-speed memory, four-channel-per-line sensor readout, and two separate motors for shutter and mirror operation provides a fast, 6.5 frame-per-second (fps) continuous shooting capability, a top shutter speed of 1/8000 seconds, a fast 0.15-second initial start-up, and nearly instantaneous shutter response. Even with all of this speed, the EOS 40D Digital SLR provides impressive image quality using a 10.1-megapixel CMOS APS-C size image sensor that utilizes large microlenses over each pixel to reduce noise and expand sensitivity up to ISO 3200. Furthermore, the 14-bit Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion process enables the camera to recognize 16,384 colors per pixel for finer and more accurate gradations of tones and colors. Canon's proprietary DIGIC III image processing engine then ensures that the fine details and natural colors of the images are optimally recorded and, as an added bonus, is also responsible for its efficient energy consumption.
The large three-inch 230,000-pixel LCD screen of the EOS 40D provides broad color gamut and a viewing angle of 140-degree perspective in all directions to increase viewing ease in conditions such as bright sunlight. An added advantage of the large display is the ability to use a larger font size for text, making it easier to read setting and menu options. More significantly, the Live View function uses the LCD display to provide an expanded and exceedingly convenient set of shooting options. By permitting the framing and capturing of subjects using the camera's LCD screen instead of the viewfinder, the shooter gains a 100 percent field view to more easily achieve the desired composition, and an added Custom Function allows auto-focus during Live View, and provides the user with the ability to magnify the image by five or ten times in order to ensure optimal focus. Live View is at its best during tripod shooting - particularly for close-up photography where precise focusing is imperative. The EOS 40D is also a boon to more traditional shooters as well with an upgraded viewfinder that has an optical magnification of 0.95x, a viewing angle of 264 degrees and an eye point of 22mm.
The enhanced durability of the EOS 40D is attributed to its magnesium alloy exterior with upgraded dust and weather resistant construction, particularly around the camera's connection ports, battery compartment and memory card door. Plus the camera incorporates an extremely durable shutter that has been rated up to 100,000 cycles, The camera also helps to secure it's data from the most common cause of data corruption problems; should the user inadvertently open the CompactFlash card door while the camera is writing to the card, a warning will pop up on the LCD screen and an "alarm" will sound, but the image(s) will continue writing to the memory card without interruption.
The EOS Integrated Cleaning System uses ultrasonic vibrations to literally shake dust particles off of the low-pass filter in front of the sensor each time the camera is powered up or shut down. Users also have the option of engaging the "clean now" function at will or bypassing it altogether. Additionally, the manual sensor cleaning function raises the mirror and allows users to clean dust that has stuck to the low-pass filter. The second part of the cleaning system is a software solution that maps the location of any spots that may remain on the sensor. Subsequently, the offending dust information is subtracted from the final image during post processing using the supplied Digital Photo Professional software.
The EOS 40D Digital SLR is compatible with the full line-up of Canon EF lenses as well as the expanding selection of high-quality, affordable EF-S lenses created specifically for Canon Digital SLRs with APS-C size image sensors. It is also compatible with any of the EX Speedlite line of flash units and supports the E-TTL II protocol that provides reliable flash output whether shooting fill-in flash pictures in sunlight, or using flash in total darkness. System accessories for the EOS 40D SLR include the redesigned high-capacity BG-E2N Battery Grip, which facilitates high-volume shooting, greater power options, and easier vertical shooting, and the WFT-E3A Wireless File Transmitter which permits wireless transfer and back-up, connection to a GPS receiver, or data transfer to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 external storage devices as well as remote control of the camera in Live View mode. Furthermore, the EOS 40D is also the first camera in its class to offer two interchangeable focusing screens in addition to the standard precision matte screen.
- 10.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor with 14-bit A/D Conversion
- Canon's large-area APS-C size (22.5 x 15.0mm) CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras. The use of improved microlenses and the latest manufacturing techniques mean each pixel is more sensitive to light, and less area between pixels is wasted on the sensor - this permits the EOS 40D to provide an extensive ISO range (from 100 to 1600, plus ISO 3200 in extended mode). The 14-bit Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion provides for fine transitions from light to dark tones, and a significant drop in digital and shadow noise while the on-chip noise reduction electronics produce images with less digital noise and better high-ISO performance than previous CMOS sensors for clearer, sharper and more detailed photographs right from the start.

Dust that settles on the sensor surface is removed using ultrasonic vibration whenever the camera is powered on or off, and it can also be manually activated. A few features of the 40D that I absolutely love are: 6.5 fps, Live View, 3” LCD, Top LCD, Larger Viewfinder, Higher/More ISO Increments, Noise Reduction, Bigger/Better Body, Longer Battery Life, and all the customization!6.5 fps:For the type of shooting I do, I won’t really be using 6.5 fps too often, but for those rare occasions that I might use\need it, I will be glad that I do. For the wedding shoot I assisted on a few days ago, I used the 6.5 fps for the dancing. I also got some great action shots of the kids running around, and of the father\daughter dance. I also expect to be using the 6.5 fps when\if I decide to shoot some sports/action. One other thing that I will cover under the fps, is the shutter! Call me weird, but I LOVE the shutter sound of the 40! Compared to my XTi, it sounds more professional, and more like a DSLR. I also have read that the 40D has the quietest shutter in the Canon line up. This is because of the way it all works; when the shutter button is clicked, a motor lifts the shutter, and then the motor closes it. Other cameras will use a spring to push it up or down, and then a motor to bring it down or up. Such as the XTi, it springs up (hence the annoying sound), and then a motor brings it down. Even though the shutter is the quietest in the Canon lineup, it can get even quieter! When using live view, the shutter sound is almost completely silent! All you hear is the shutter going down; even in a burst, all you will hear is the shutter dropping down. This is perfect for wedding ceremonies, when you don’t want to be too distracting.Live View:Live view is another cool feature that the 40D has. It may not seem\sound like much to you, but it is pretty cool. I originally thought I would never use live view, just because I am never in a situation where I can’t look through the viewfinder. But at the wedding, I proved myself wrong! Knowing that I had live view, I got some different angles. Such as, when everyone was dancing I held the camera over my head, turned on live view, composed the shot, and then took it! One downside (or so people say) to live view is the fact that you can’t autofocus while using live view. But you can! You just have to enable the autofocus during live view (C. Fn III: 6). After you enable Custom Function IIII : 6, you just have to press the AF-ON button on the camera, and it will autofocus! While it focuses, you won’t be able to see via live view, but when you take your finger off of the AF-ON button, live view will turn back on and you can take the shot.Another great thing about live view is the ability to zoom in up to a 100% crop on any selected area of the photo! With this great feature, you can manual focus and be as spot on as ever! This is great for astrophotography, and macro!When using live view, the shutter sound is almost completely silent! All you hear is the shutter going down; even in a burst, all you will hear is the shutter dropping down. This is perfect for wedding ceremonies, when you don’t want to be too distracting.3” LCD:The 40D features a huge, 3” LCD screen! Even though it uses the same number of pixels as the XTi does, with its 2.5” screen, the 40D’s LCD is amazing! It can be bright enough that you can see it clearly in direct sunlight or dark enough that only you can see what is on the screen! With the extra screen space, you can now see the RGB histograms, as well as the regular light histogram! Unlike the XTi, you could only see the regular\light histogram. This 3” screen also helps viewing your photos to make sure they are coming out the way you want them to. It also helps with live view, when you are at a 100% crop, manual focusing, you can see everything clearer then with a smaller screen.Top LCD:All of Canon’s DSLRs have a top LCD screen for displaying the camera’s settings. (Well, all of them accept the Rebel series) Coming from an XTi, I was scared that this small LCD for the settings would be hard to get use to, and be hard to use just because I am so use to using the rear LCD for my settings. But after using the 40D, I was amazed by how much easier it is to use to top LCD screen! Instead of moving your head back completely, just to see your settings, you just have to lower the camera a few inches and you can see the settings! One thing I am still getting use to, are the dials you have to turn to change a specific setting. For example, if I want to change my ISO, I have to push the ISO/Flash-Comp button, and then turn the top dial to change ISO, if I turn the big\main dial, I will change the flash compensation instead of the ISO.Larger Viewfinder:Even though the 40D has the same sized sensor (1.6x) as the XTi, the viewfinder is a whole lot bigger and brighter! The viewfinder just looks incredible! What makes it just that much better, is the fact that it shows every single one of your settings at the bottom of the viewfinder. This is great for photographers who can’t spare any time moving their eye to see\change their settings. The XTi’s viewfinder also displays your settings in the viewfinder, but it does not include your ISO, which the 40D does! The 40D viewfinder displays: shutter speed, aperture, exposure, ISO, and your max burst (The number of photos you can burst through at high speed, before it slows down). These settings\numbers that it shows makes using and shooting with the 40D so much easier!Higher/More ISO Increments:The 40D has a ton of different ISO increments! Probably the same increments for the other Canon cameras, but it have more ISO levels then the XTi. The 40D has ISO: Auto, 100, 125, 160, 200, 250, 320, 400, 500, 640, 800, 1000, 1250, 1600, and 3200. The 40D is one of the first Canon cameras to have Auto ISO! This was a major reason that I upgraded to the 40D. The more specific ISO increments, higher ISO options, and less noise! All the different ISO levels make the 40D just that much more customizable. ISO levels 125, 160, 250, 320, 500, 640, 1000, 1600, and 3200 are not available in\on the XTi! And this was a huge reason for me to upgrade. All of these ISO levels can let me customize my exposure just that much easier.Noise Reduction:Yes!! The 40D has noise reduction (NR)!! (C. Fn II : 2) This feature is incredible!! At 3200 ISO, with no noise reduction, there is a decent amount of noise (probably less then there is at 1600 ISO on the XTi). But when you use NR, the amount of noise drops dramatically! There is still some visible noise, but not as much as there would be without NR! What some people have shown, is if you use 3200 ISO, NR, proper exposure, and a noise reduction program, you can come out with a 3200 ISO photo with virtually no noise whatsoever! This is a HUGE bonus for all photographers, especially wedding photographers!Bigger and Better Body:The body of the 40D feels AMAZING! It is big enough to fit your entire hand on the grip, but it isn’t so big that it is a pain to carry around. The build of the camera body is also very nice. It feels very solid, and it just feels like it will last forever! The magnesium-alloy body is a huge upgrade over the cheap materials that the XTi is made from. All of the controls are placed perfectly to achieve quick access to all settings. At first, I was a little skeptical about the placement of some of the dials\buttons, but after holding and using the camera, everything feels so natural. I read some reviews saying that people upgrading from an XTi, to the 40D, will have trouble with the layout and the menus. But after only using the camera for 5 minutes, I figured out the placement of all the buttons and dials. In fact, the 40D and its dials\buttons\top LCD feels so much more natural than it did with the XTi, on the XTi you would have to look at the back screen to see and change your settings, but the 40D you just drop the camera a few inches and you can see your settings. I can actually reach the buttons above the top LCD screen, without taking my hand off of the grip! This is great if you can’t waste any time. One thing I am still getting use to, are the dials you have to turn to change a specific setting. For example, if I want to change my ISO, I have to push the ISO/Flash-Comp button, and then turn the top dial to change ISO, if I turn the big\main dial, I will change the flash compensation instead of the ISO.Longer Battery Life:The 40D uses 1390mAh Li-Ion batteries, while the XTi uses 720mAh Li-Ion batteries. This shows that the 40D gets twice the battery life of the XTi! This is a HUGE upgrade!! If you think about it, it may even out, with the power being used on the top LCD, the bigger 3” main LCD, live view, ect. And it does, but Canon also says that one charge of the 4D battery will let you shoot 1,100 shots with no flash until the battery dies! And this is true! I tested it at the wedding a few days ago! I went to around 1k shots, when the battery FINALLY died on me! And that is WITH using live view for a few shots! The XTi is only rated to last 500 shots with no flash, on one battery charge. Once again, another GREAT upgrade in the 40D!Customization:This is another HUGE feature that the 40D has, that makes it worth the upgrade! The 40D has 24 customizable options (Enable\Disable type options) shared between 4 categories: Exposure (C. Fn I), Image (C. Fn II), Auto Focus\Drive (C. Fn III), and Operation/Others (C. Fn IV). Exposure includes: exposure level increments 1/3 stop or ½ stop, ISO speed increments 1/3 stop or 1 stop, ISO expansion off or on (3200 ISO), bracketing auto cancel, bracketing sequence, safety shift, and flash sync speed in AV mode auto or 1/250 second. Image includes: long exposure noise reduction, high ISO speed noise reduction, highlight tone priority. The other two categories just include the basics (AF during live view, shutter button to AF or the * button to AF, ect.). These are all amazing features that the 40D has, and the XTi does not. I love being able to customize the camera to my likings. Not only does it have these 24 customizable options, but the 40D also has a customizable menu that lets you place certain options in your one menu tab for easy access. My customizable menu has: Custom WB, Live View function settings, C. Fn II : Image, ISO expansion, and Format. This lets me go to the menu and quickly chose one of these settings\menus to get to a specific option quickly. The 40D also has 3 custom modes on the mode dial! These are also very cool features. They let you set a frequently used stat setup and register it to one of the custom modes. For me I set them like this:C1 – 1/200, f/1.8, ISO 125. This is my portrait setting, so I can just flip to C1 on the mode dial and I can start shooting!C2 – 1/80, f/1.4, ISO 320. This is more of a low light setting for me. I can use it at a wedding, or just indoors when I don’t want to use my flash.C3 – 20”, f/16, ISO 100. This is my long exposure mode. I flip to this mode, and adjust the settings accordingly for proper, long exposure, exposure.The cool thing about these custom modes is the ability to adjust the settings in each mode, but when you do this it won’t permanently change the mode to those settings unless you chose to register those settings to that mode.There are SO MANY more features that make the 40D incredible! Things I like:
- Speed - I very rarely fill up the buffer and have to wait to take a photo (shooting full res raw).
- Size - I have small-medium size hands, but the latest Rebel series bodies all feel very small in my hands (even though this was an upgrade from a Digital Rebel). This camera feels very nice in my hands.
- Control layout - the buttons are very intuitively placed. After a very short time I was able to do things like change ISO, focus point, etc. without looking or with just a quick glance.
- Image quality - images are sharp, colors are great. With most lenses even at 100% the pictures look great.
Things I don't like:
- The autofocus (auto focus point selection mode) struggles, especially with action shots. It tends to choose to focus on the motionless background rather than the moving foreground. I find myself using single focus point selection much more than I'd like. I rarely had that problem with my Digital Rebel.
- In high contrast shots, it tends to overexpose a lot. It usually expose for dark background shadows rather than the fair hair and skin of my children -- so their faces get completely blown out. I know, I can adjust the exposure -- but again I never really had to do that with my digital rebel.
- Difficult to see depth-of-field: The DOF preview/focus screen size combination isn't sufficient to really see DOF. Lot's of times things look focused in the viewfinder but aren't. The LCD resolution is too low to be able to usefully use the preview screen to check focus. For a landscape it's okay since there's time to focus/check/bracket shots, but for sports/action it doesn't cut it.
Bottom line: If you asked me a week ago if I'd recommend it to a friend, I would have given a cautious yes. However, with the newly-announced 50D, I'd definitely recommend waiting.
It's a great camera but I'm finding that I can't just use it right away -- I'm having to learn some of the camera's shortcomings and what problems to expect. Maybe this is expected for professionals, but it's something I haven't had to deal with before even though I've used Canon SLRs for 10+ years and this is my fourth Canon body (second digital).

Even though this body has been retired I still think it's a great product. If you are looking for a used body, this may be a good choice for you. Is it as good as the new bodies? No but it's darn close and you should be able to find these used at a decent price. The 6+ fps makes this a fantastic body for sports shooters and events with a lot of action or quick action. I shoot everything from sports to dance routines and armored jousts. It handles portrait and glamour work perfectly as well. The lower noise at higher ISO's is also very nice and has given me many shots I could never have taken with another body similar to or below it.

I bought this camera mostly for travel photography, although I use it on a day to day basis as well. I previously owned a Rebel XT and this is a HUGE upgrade for me. This camera performs so incredibly well. It's a total work horse. And my pictures are incredible. From the moment I picked up the camera, I was in love. Super fast shutter speed, easy menu accessibility and super durable. The only downfall is its weight. Carrying it around Europe this June was not a fun task, but the quality of my pictures definitely made up for it.

Amazing camera. Most enjoyable and easy to use DSLR I've ever used (although I'm sure it's topped by the 5D and 1D). Before this, I shot with a Canon EOS Elan 7NE 35mm film SLR. I bought the 40D because it has similar controls and the same great Canon feel that I thought would make a smooth transition from film to digital. I use the 28-135 kit lens. Of course it's not the BEST lens, but it gets the job done great for me and I'm very picky. I've shot several thousands of images with the 40D since purchasing it in October (it's now July) and it hasn't disappointed me a bit yet. The only thing I wish was different is the 1.6x crop factor, but unless you pay two or three times as much for a full-frame DSLR, that's something you'll just have to deal with. It's fine for distance/zoom shots, but for anything wide angle, it can be a pain unless you're using an ultra wide angle lens. The 40D has amazing resolution. The images look incredible even on the big 3" display, even better on the computer (even better with very little editing), and the same when professionally printed. I find the Live View mode to be extremely useful when using a tripod for still shots. I also enjoy the included Canon software. I plan on using this great camera for many years to come. To give some level of credit to my review, I've been a serious art photographer for over five years now, four of them studying the art in school.

I use this camera for everything: portraits, landscape, macro work, still lifes and more. It's an excellent camera, not too much resolution so the images are clean yet enough to make a decent 13x19" print. Great features, excellent value. A great camera. This is an amazing camera. I upgraded from a Canon P&S. The 40D is extremely fast. The focus is fast, but it could use more AF points. The noise performance is quite good. I used ISO 1600 (Noise Reduction "On") at a dim recital, and got great results. It is very nice for nature, especially wildlife with 6.5 FPS.

My primary uses, so far, are for landscapes, flowers, family, and friends. Since I've used Canon digital cameras for approximately five years, the menu layout is familiar and easy to use. I appreciate the high ISO-low noise capability, which results in excellent image quality. Another great feature is the ability to measure the flash amount necessary for a specific portion of a picture. I take all of my shots using the viewfinder, so I consider the live view function to be a frill, especially since continued use of sensor for live view must increase image noise. There are many useful functions and ways to measure and adjust the exposure properly. In everyday use, the controls necessary for settings adjustments are easy to access, which reduces wasted time and effort. Even though I've only had it less than three weeks, I can see that it will do an excellent job as long as I think about what I'm doing and don't make too many mistakes. The large number of metering and exposure options, not counting the silly scene modes on the dial, will most likely provide me with the ability to meet the demands of a variety of photographic possibilities.

I didnt buy this camera from B&H, but I found this site after the fact. I got the camera from my local big-box store and am just hooked on photography. This camera is awesome and so is my new hobby! I was brand new to SLRs when I bought this, but had the 400d(XTi) a couple weeks before I bought this, but decided I really wanted this camera instead. Buy it and see for yourself. The photos that come from it and from this particular lens are stunning. Take some time and learn how to use it!
One thing I did that im so glad I did was to buy an external flash like the 480 ex II before I bought new lenses. Flash photography with that flash is great. Learn to bounce the flash indoors and you'll realize how great this combo is! Get a flash & read up before spending alot on other lenses!

I decided to upgrade from my old EOS400D to this model and now I know that it was a right thought. 40D delivers less noise in poor lighting conditions and the nature of noise(less chromatic) much better looks on images. The x-sync 1/250s and sync jack for the synchonisation with monolight shows very predictable results when shooting in studio. Highlight tone priority that included now in all Canon's cameras works well in contrast conditions.
