The Canon Pixma Pro9500 Photo Printer has been designed and developed to accommodate pro photographers and imaging professionals who need the highest possible quality output together with significant print longevity.
The printer uses ten individual ink tanks of Canon's long lasting, Lucia brand pigment based inks. It applies that ink with renowned Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) technology using a 7,680 nozzle print head to create photographs and other works of art that are rich in detail, texture and tone.
The Canon Lucia inks include a matte black ink that provides high density true black renditions on fine art papers, while the Photo Black ink provides high contrast. The gray ink reduces graininess and lines and stabilizes the gray balance in the print. It also reduces the photo phenomenon known as metamerism. These neutral tone inks, combined with the other included colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, photo cyan, photo magenta, red and green), are precisely placed by the Pixma Pro9500 Photo Printer in droplets as small as three-picoliters to produce images with superb image quality and color accuracy. To further increase productivity, efficiency, and value, all 10 individual ink tanks reside in the print head at all times, saving time (and ink) by eliminating the need to swap out tanks before printing.
The PIXMA Pro9500 Photo Printer is bundled with Canon Easy-PhotoPrint Pro software - a plug-in software program for Adobe Photoshop applications, and Canon Digital Photo Pro (DPP), which permits one-click image transfer; offers simple settings for color management and allows users to configure printer settings once for images on multiple sheets.
Among its myriad other features, the Easy-PhotoPrint Pro software facilitates the printing of RAW images (as a high quality TIFF or JPEG) without having to save from the Canon DPP software. The Easy-PhotoPrint Pro software also creates pattern prints that demonstrate different color balance, brightness, and contrast from the original image and prints them on a sheet of paper for easy comparison. Users can even configure the color settings for different types of papers and adjustment values can be saved for later use.

I do freelance Graphic Design and a avid pro amateur photographer. After looking at reviews for the past 6 months on the Pro9500 I wanted the best of both worlds accurate color and great BxW photos and graphic fine art work. The Canon does deliver. Setup was easy and was printing in one hour. I do not care for super glossy prints so the semi-gloss or satin photo papers are perfect for this printer,Fine art paper even better. I tried both Canon and Ilford Galleria ,both are great. It is better to use the best quality paper for this printer no sense in wasting a great printer on cheap paper.
I have always had Canon printers and have never had any bad results. I know every one preaches the miracles of Epson and I am not saying they are not bad printers ,but I like the thought process that Canon puts into their printers.
My first printer was the S800 and then bought the i9900,when the 800 finally died I decided to move on into the pigment inks for my photographic work and made my i9900 as my default printer for text and other color work. The Pro9500 is exclusively for photographic and fine art work. Also Canon pigments are much brighter then the Epsons pigment inks.
B&H price and Canon's rebate is also an added plus.

I purchased this printer when if first came out. Very few reviews were available then. I have been very disappointed in print quality on glossy paper, even Canon's own Photo Paper Plus Glossy. I had some cheap paper from local office supply store laying around The Pro9500 does print very well on this Satin paper which is kinda a smooth matte paper. Another paper that I found printed well with the Pro9500 is Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl Paper. (Download the ICC profile from Ilford) Again this is a smooth matte type paper, not glossy.Another thing you have to watch out for with the Pro9500, not all inkjet printer paper is compatible with pigmented inks.Previously I would edit my photos in Photoshop and save to .jpg and take them down to my local photo lab for printing. I purchased this Pro9500 so I would have more control over my prints. I can't get any decent prints on glossy paper, which in my humble opinion gives the best color. Prints onto Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy paper and other brands of glossy paper look dull and the the black ink seems to print too heavy with no detail in the dark areas and shadows. Colors are muted on glossy paper. The owners manual is on CD-rom and doesn't give any advice on how to print from Photoshop or other imaging programs. It only shows how to print from Canon's Easy Print plug in for Photoshop which is a joke. I had lots of difficulties trying to get good prints from Photoshop. Finally found a video podcast from Russell Brown that explained how to set up Photoshop to print and what controls to turn off in the print driver. Also the Canon ICC profiles use very short names (SG1, SG3, SP1, SP3, MP1,,,etc) that make selecting the correct paper and print quality very difficult. Why couldn't they just name their ICC profiles Photo Paper Plus Semi-Gloss High quality instead of SC1.I do not recommend this printer to anyone that wants to print on glossy paper. If you like matte paper and want the so called longer print life of the pigmented inks then the Pro9500 is a fair printer. Considering the printer only prints well on one type of paper the price is very high. I have been a Canon fan since the 1970's. I own the Canon Digital Rebel, Canon 20D and the new Canon Eos 1D Mark III which rocks. This is the first time Canon has disappointed me.
Expertise: Semi-pro
Problems Encountered: Doesn't print well on glossy paper. The printer profile names are very short and meaningless.

Comments about Canon Pixma Pro9500 Inkjet Printer:
My wife is a professional photographer. We make prints up to 11x14 and 5x7 greeting cards (which replace the old glue-the-print-to-the-card method). This is the most consistent printer we have ever had in ten years; we use a Spyder for monitor calibration--came free with the printer(!). I can now see subtleties in paper that I could not see before. Ink is expensive--my only complaint--[...]

Had this printer for a month now and have no complaints. It was easy to setup and it produces high quality prints. The addition of matt black and grey made a world of difference. It does a great job with glossy paper and with matt paper the image produced is superb.

Comments about Canon Pixma Pro9500 Inkjet Printer:
I was strictly film. I just went digital with a Canon 50D, new lenses, new computer and this printer. I was suprised at overall size and weight and wondered where I would put it. After I fixed that problem, I started printing. I was amazed at the print quality. The 10 inks will make you a believer. If you love printing B/W this is the printer for you.I got a wild hair and scanned one old film pic and printed it out on this printer. I didn't enhance the pic at all. Just scan and print. The quality was great. Some old pics seem better now then the orginals but that's my opinion. I especially love how fast I get a print compared to driving 10 miles one way to [...](which is the closest place to me that processes)to get any kind of processing done, digital or film. As far as reliablity, I have not owned or used it long enough but from what I have seen so far I am 110% happy that I did give the extra money for this printer!

I can only say one thing outstanding. Black and whites are true to color after calibration no additional setting required. Took about 20 minutes to set up and start printing and I am still amazed at the quality of the prints.

Had a Pixma IP6600D and Canon MP530, I replaced the 6600 for the Pro9500.
Love the images I am getting. So far I have not have to calibrate printer to pc Easy to set up if you just go slow and follow the directions. When it says it takes one hour plus, this is how long it takes but then you are in business.

About 4 years ago, I bought a Canon i9100 and it has been an outstanding printer. When B&H put this printer on sale, I couldn't resist, even though there have been NO problems with the i9100. This is even better - professional quality prints, fast, easy setup - Canon knows how to do it right!

The setup instructions were great, and the setup was extremely easy. In less than an hour I was up an printing from a Vista computer, and the initial results have impressed me. I've only printed onto Galeire Pearl paper so far, and as I've read, it seems to work well with this printer. With the low price and rebate this printer is a pretty incredible deal.
It seems quite a bit slower than the specs on the website say though. If you plan to front load art type paper, the printer does require a lot of room behind it.

Just getting used to the printer. Takes a long time to get ready to print, software is anything but user friendly, however, the end results are stunning if you use the right paper. Use the wrong paper and the ink will take, at least, 100 years to dry. Use Canon paper if you can find it or any good brand that gives you profiles.

I purchased for photo printing only
Setup was easy, but could not print until I purchased a new set of ink tanks. After trying for several days and a call to Canon, figured out that one of the tanks that came with the printer had a bad chip and could not be recognized by the printer.

I am purely an amateur photographer, but this year we took trips to Hawaii and France and also now have a new grandchild. I decided I wanted a full capability printer that would make it worth the effort to edit and print the photographs myself. So far, I am very pleased. I still have much to learn in terms of its extensive capabilities.
I may have to upgrade my digital camera now.

I use this printer to print all my pictures and they are professional quality. The color is great. The only problem I'm experiencing and it's probably just because I haven't spent enough time using it and reading the manual, I can't figure out how to print different size pictures.

Comments about Canon Pixma Pro9500 Inkjet Printer:
The assembly and set up linking to a mac was very easy. I do wish Canon would do more on the software front with the rise of Aperture for the Mac. If I never opened photoshop again, it would be OK, but the PS plugin does a good job on color. Though this printer isn't recommended for super glossy, the results on standard glossy were surprisingly good.
This unit replaces my unloved Epson 1280.
I do wish Canon would work out the weirdness on their photo paper labeling. It is very difficult to match up recommended papers to actual product models when purchasing. They also need to provide more bulk product instead of selling it in 20 sheet boxes.
