This Lensbaby Pinhole/Zone Plate Optic is part of the Lensbaby Optic Swap System. Lensbaby has developed a line of different "optics" that can be interchanged with the Muse, Composer, and Control Freak lenses. This provides artists with an almost unlimited variety of looks and styles to capture their unique visions.

The Pinhole/Zone Plate Optic lets you shift easily back and forth from the pinhole mode to the zone plate mode by simply sliding a toggle inside the optic. In either pinhole or zone plate mode, this optic insert achieves softer focus, dreamy images that are equally sharp from edge to edge.

Comments about Pinhole/Zone Plate Optic for Lensbaby Composer, Muse, & Control Freak Lenses:

I've been experimenting with mine for a few days. Here's my impressions:

-- the results are not as fine as you get with a medium format film pinhole camera. The 35mm sensor is just too small to convey the depth and subtlety of a larger format, I think

-- the results are only slightly better than I was getting with a homemade pinhole in foil placed in the center of a body cap. Considering that the body cap is about 1/10 the price of the Lensbaby optic, it would be worth considering going the body cap route.

-- I would not recommend buying a Lensbaby just to try the pinhole optic. However, it might be a worthwhile addition to your bag if you already have a Lensbaby Composer.

-- I haven't had much time to try the zone plate optic, maybe that is more worthwhile.

Summary: if you just want to try pinhole, make your own body cap pinhole for peanuts. If you're really serious about pinhole, I think the way to go is with medium format or larger film in a custom box.

Comments about Pinhole/Zone Plate Optic for Lensbaby Composer, Muse, & Control Freak Lenses:

Provides either a zone plate and a pinhole effect by moving a in the optic itself. Both effects are quite dramatic but could be very effective in the right circumstances.
