It also features a USB port, 3.5mm stereo mic input and 3.5mm stereo headphone output. The mic input can even double as an audio-in for line recording from external devices like CD players or cell phones. The ICDUX512 has an integrated speaker as well, which comes in handy whenever you want to listen back to recordings out loud. The recorder comes equipped with a NiMH AAA rechargeable battery that can last up to 29 hrs and is USB charge capable. The recorder can fit easily in your pocket or purse and is barely noticeable in your hand, weighing a scant 2.1 oz.

I'm a Mobile DJ, and I occasionally want to record my live sets while I'm on a gig. I've been using a second computer for the purpose, but wanted to minimize the amount of bulk I'm carrying around. I decided to look for a small portable recoring solution for my DJing needs, and I am very happy with the ICDUX512 Digital Voice Recorder by Sony.
The Good: It comes with a cool little padded case, decent Sony earbuds, USB cable and even a rechargeable battery for right our of the box usability. The slide-out usb connection built right into the device is also a great design feature, allowing for cordless connection to your computer for file transfers. The controls are simple and intuitive, and the device itself is designed to fit in your hand yet large enough to properly operate the controls. The recorder has a stereo mini-jack input and a separate mini-jack output to stereo. You can also set the input level (hi-med-low), for some basic gain control. you can use the device essentially as a USB flash drive, making file transfer extremely simple (works right out of the box on Macs, and has the necessary drivers on an install disc for lesser "computers" to interface with it). You can even load files up into it as if it were indeed a USB flash drive. You can time-mark your recordings for cueing to certain points, and there is a noise-cut control button right on the device. You can set your recording quality with great range. You can opt to recharge your AAA rechargeable battery when you plug into USB, and the battery life is quite decent. There is a microSD slot for more memory (It has plenty built-in). It comes in three colors (I chose red and it looks very hot).
The Bad: You can't adjust the L and R mic positions (I don't care because all my recordings will be through the stereo jack inputs, but if you're doing field recordings or interviews this *may* be an issue for *some*). You can't rename the folders in the memory structure from the device (but you *can* name & create folders from your computer)
The Ugly: The LCD screen is a dated design & dull amber color, I'd like to see a screen in blue or green instead. The LCD screen information is a little oddly presented, I had to learn how to decipher it, unlike the more natural button design.
Conclusion: I can live with the ugly 1970's-Tascam-looking screen layout, as the other features are perfectly suited to what I need. The quality & design is otherwise TOP-NOTCH. I'd get the same device if I had a chance to shop around again.

As a judge I use this recorder to dictate my tentative rulings everyday. My secretary and I are not in the same building so we had been passing tapes back and forth. Those days are over and the sound quality is much better.

Comments about Sony ICDUX512 Digital Voice Recorder (Red):
This voice recorder is very simple to use, even without reading the manual. It has stereo microphone (on both sides of the head) so you don't have to worry if the microphone is in the right position. Another thing I like about it is that you can separate the sound tracks in different folders by the touch of a button. When you make long interviews it makes a lot easier to find the important parts by including marks in the sound files.
It works with one AAA battery (included) that can be charged when you connect the voice recorder in the computer using its USB direct.
Small size, micro SD card slot, earphones outlet. And good price too.

Comments about Sony ICDUX512 Digital Voice Recorder (Red):
I am a medical student and I use this voice recorder for lectures. It picks up sound very nicely! no need for an extra external mic. Battery life from the supplied re-chargable battery is great so far. The design of the interface is well thought out with a male USB plug that slides out of the body of the recorder that you can plug right into a laptop or use the supplied longer adapter cable. The overall quality seems good but not excellent because the plastic movements feel cheap. User interface is well thought out.I like how you can skip through a 2 hour long recording to the parts that you need to hear. One downside is it did not come with a case but I picked up a neoprene cell phone case at the dollar store that works great. Another downside is that it does pick up higher frequency background noise like papers shuffling, candy wrapper crumpling, or books being dropped on the floor...mostly loud sharp noises. Overall a GREAT little voice recorder!

Comments about Sony ICDUX512 Digital Voice Recorder (Red):
I bought this to record class lectures and I have to say I am very happy with it (have been using for 2 weeks now). I read the instructions and it is fairly simple to use- I have only used the recording feature thus far but the other functions seem manageable. The lectures are audible and clear even when I am some distance from the professor. The microphone is kind of sensitive so I would say not to place it right next to your notebook where you are taking notes so that you won't deal with the whisper of your scribbling throughout the lecture.

It's easy to use and high quality. The sound at a recent interview was great, even with a soft-spoken subject being interviewed. The slow-down function for transcription is easy to use and helpful. On the whole, great product. We haven't had it long enough to judge the battery life, but it's serving our purposes just fine so far. Also haven't used it at a concert yet. I'll be interested to see how that goes.

I use this in lecture classrooms. It's pretty easy to operate once you learn about the functions. I wish I could name my files/folders directly on the device. I'm not sure if you can format it through PC (with the CD this device comes with) though (I use a mac). I love the USB that can just plug into my computer so that I can simply drag the files onto my desktop.

I use this product to record class lectures. It is easy to use, easily portable, and contains a great amount of memory space. The sound quality on the recordings is spectacular, and can be set to cancel out background noise. Additionally, it is quite convenient that the audio files can be easily transferred and organized on my computer.
So far I do not have any significant problems with the device. My only complaint is that the battery doesn't seem to last as long as I would like. But of course the device can be charged on my computer, so this isn't a big problem.

I initially purchased this product to capture thoughts that came to mind during the day, for putting messages together for preaching. This recorder is amazing! Not only can I download my recordings to the sound organizer software that came with it, I can download music and even use the recorder for 2gigs of flash memory! Music, notes, or lectures can be stored in separate files, or played back through the supplied earbuds. This device is also an MP3 player. You can even play back through external devices and add an external mic. There's a date and time display, and many other great features. It is very compact and easy to carry. It is also nice that it comes with a rechargeable battery that can be charged through the slide out USB plug.
