The Tokina 100mm f/2.8 - AT-X M100 PRO D is a macro lens capable of life-sized (1:1) reproduction at 11.8" (30 cm).
The lens' multi-coating has been re-engineered to match the highly reflective silicon based CCD and CMOS sensors in today's digital SLR cameras. This lens gives the best of both worlds because optics still give full coverage and excellent sharpness on 35mm film. A macro lens that can handle both the digital and film worlds with ease.
Note! AF not supported by D40 and D60 cameras.

I bought this lens from B&H in 2008, so i have had it for a while and used it extensively.
I am a Nikon owner and I shoot pictures for a living. All of my lenses are Nikon, but in 2008 I needed a macro for a job I was asked to do and I was all ready to buy the Nikon when I read a review of this lens in one of the major photo magazines I receive. Buying a Tokina was not way up there on my list, but this review was well written and documented, and the Tokina was almost half the price. Cost and effect came into play. The job wasn't that big and it would be a one time deal, so I elected to buy, with great trepidation, the Tokina.
Three years later i can tell you I never looked back. I was amazed at the sharpness and contrast of this lens. For mactro work it is fun and easy to use, and for portraits, well the sharpness leaves nothing to be desired. I'm glad I second guessed myself on this purchase. I have recommended this lens to a few other photographer friends and they too have thanked me for the quality and savings. As a side note, I have used the Nikon macro and honestly, the only advantage is the Nikon is built like the proverbial tank, but the quality of the photograph was, in my humble opinion, not as good as the Tokina. Lesson learned for sure.
Because of this lens, I no longer jump right in and buy Nikon, I do as much research as I can now, and although I love all my Nikon lenses because of their pro build quality, I now consider other lenses, even though I almost always buy the Nikon after researching. I will tell you this caution to watch for; there are three small screws on the front of the lens barrel. Two have worked their way out causing the front plastic lens shade holder to fall off. I am in contact with Tokina, trying to get two replacement screws. I'll let you know about customer service after I hear back from them. Bottom line, for the money, this is one great macro lens

I have only had this lens 2 weeks, and am now getting the hang of using it to take macro shots of insects.
The focus is quite fast even in lowish light, and the sharpness is okay, but not great.

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
I purchased this lens for use on a D7000. It was part of a purhcase with another Tokina lens (12-24mm pro dx)to finally give my D7000 some decent glass, as well as improving the range of my lens.
Firstly, build and material quality are first rate. The lens itself is easy to use, and the af/mf ring is well implemented.
As both a macro, and a non zoom telephoto lens, I am extremely happy with my purhase. The only downer is the lack of VR means good light, or a tripod is required to get the best out of the lens. Still, 5 out of 5 for me.
Same goes for B&H service, delivered to Australia without hassle.

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
I have had the lens only for about a week, and only for a couple hundred hand-held shots, so this isn't a final judgment.
I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the images, though macro shots are more difficult than I had anticipated; I am going to have to use a tripod for best results, I'm afraid, which is restricting. (I have used the Nikon 105mm macro lens, and it is easier to use--but also a good deal more expensive.) The first attached photo is one of the better macro images so far.
But the lens is also a marvelous semi-telephoto, good for landscapes and even portraits, if you can get far enough away; see the second image.
The auto-focusing is a bit clunky--noisy, slow and sometimes unable to pick up small foci--but it is so easy to shift to manual focus via the lens ring, that this is not much of a problem, especially for stationary subjects.
All in all, this is a worthy lens for DX macro users.

Let's get to it. First, great lens does what any good macro does and with ease. The bokeh is excellent. It is very sharp and if your pixel count is high enough, you can zoom in quite a bit. You will need a tripod to shoot with this lens just like all macros.

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
I purchased this lens based on reviews i had found in websites and mags. Basically, the reviews stated that this lens is as sharp, or sharper than the competitors (Nikon, Sigma) for 100mm macros. It's also a lot less money. I will say, for the money, it is really sharp. But, one problem i noticed was lens creep. When dealing with such close subjects, and critical focus is needed, i just couldn't count on it. Yes, it has focus lock, but that doesn't really work well when trying to shoot live butterflies and such. My eyes are getting older, so i really need to be able to trust auto focus to get the job done. this lens focuses extremely slow, and then with the lens creep, it became obvious it was not going to work for me. this lens also does not have vibration reduction, which is also why it's a little less expensive than the others. Another thing that drew me to this lens was the "constant" f2.8. i have several f2.8 zooms, and when you zoom, they stay at f2.8. With this lens, the closer i focused, the higher the f-stop became. According to the manual, it said it had something to do with the amount of light coming through, so the f5.6 was now equivalent to f2.8. now, i'm not sure if that's normal with macro lenes, but i'm going to find out! the build quality on this is a little less than the Sigma and Nikon. right now, the Sigma is $200 off, which puts it just a couple hundred $ more for much more lens. I think i'll be investigating that route.

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
When the lens arrived, first thing i noticed was the solid build. Upon using it for few days following worked well: 1) Sharp! (macro and Portraits), 2) nice bokeh. Although chromatic aberration was a bit high and the auto focus was slow (expected for macro). After using it for few days autofocus started making some sort of grinding noise while retreating. This was not a normal focusing noise. I would've kept the lens for its sharpness & bokeh but the noise worried me a bit. Maybe it was just the piece I received.

Comments about Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
It is by far the best macro lens that I have owned.
I had a Nikon 1005mm macro lens which I sold. Very heavy and bulky. The results were not even half as nice as with the Tokina 100mm.
Fantastic close-ups. Extremely clear and beautiful colors.
Do not hesitate if you want to get into macro photography. Highly recommend this product.

I have been using it for close ups of captive animals.
There is somewhat of a "practicing" period with this lens. I have a Nikon 60 Micro so I am somewhat experienced with this type of lens.
Now that I have the hang of using the Tokina lens - I really like it.

I was looking for a fantastic prime macro lens for my macro work with insects and flowers, and anything in between. After reading many reviews on this site and others...they speak the truth 100%.
This is one of the SHARPEST lenses I have ever used. The amazing picture quality helped me win a photo contest on a Vermont photography website with a picture of a rose and water droplet.
GET THIS LENS. The price is amazing for the amount of power it gives you.
Cheers.

I've been very happy with this lens. If I'm hand holding any shots, I have the shutter speed fast enough that I don't miss the VR of a Nikkor. I really like the manual focus clutch on this as well, much better than any other lens I have.

The lens is razor sharp across the image, and so far exposures seem spot on, but the lens hunts to focus. Switching on the focus limiter helps. The lens is solidly built.

I have used the older version of this lens for both 35mm and digital (DX) photography for quite a few years. I simply could not afford the Nikon version but I can't imagine it being appreciably better than the Tokina.
Other than the slightest bit of CA with high contrast subject matter, this lens leaves nothing to be desired.

This lense is VERY good for macro. Being an amateur, I use autofocus most of the time, but one this particular lense i find the switch from one mode to the other so convenient... Very good for macro shots or portraits. I have the impression that this lense also restitutes colorsand light a bit better than my other lenses - it looks like crispier.
I sometimes wish i had a VR on this lense as it is really useful for more than just macro (very sharp 100mm lense, with great control of the DOF).
