Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Canon APS-C DSLRs
Different mount shown

The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Lens is an ultra wide angle, short zoom range lens specifically designed for use with digital SLR cameras. The slightly shorter zoom range of this lens over the popular and award winning 12-24mm lens makes it possible to maintain optical quality even at wide-open apertures. This lens features a fast constant aperture of f/2.8, and provides a focal length equivalent to 17-25mm in 35mm format.

As part of the AT-X line, this lens is designed to provide excellent optical quality, and offers advanced features like the WR (Water Repellent) front element, its One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism, that allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the camera to focus manually (there is no second AF/MF switch on the lens for Canon, everything is accomplished by the focus ring), and a 9-bladed aperture. This is an excellent lens for short closeup photography.

This lens is designed for use with the EOS Digital Rebel series or other DSLR cameras with APS-C-sized sensors, including 7D, 60D, 50D, 40D, 30D and 20D cameras.

Note: This lens is NOT waterproof. The 'WR Coating' adds water-resistant protection to the front element only.

Note! Not designed for 35mm film SLR cameras or digital camera with image sensor larger than APS-C size.

WR Coating
WR (Water Repellent) coating made of a special compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water- and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.

Note: This lens is NOT waterproof. The 'WR Coating' adds water-resistant protection to the front element only.

One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
The One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows for fast and easy switching between manual and auto focus from any position. This improvement means that it is not necessary to change the AF/MF switch (on the body with Nikon or the lens with Canon) every time the lens is changed from auto focus to manual focus mode.
9-Blade Aperture
The rounded diaphragm opening (9 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural.

I was looking for a wide angle lens and like everyone else, started searching reviews on the web. The Tokina got consistent positive reviews for being sharp, and for the fast aperture. The Sigma 10-20 and the Canon 10-22 were the other choices. I have other "fast lenses" and appreciate the advantage in low light and/or no flash conditions. In the end I felt that a faster lens would be better for me than the extra zoom range. Just got the lens today. All I can say is wow! The images at f2.8 are very sharp. Better than expected. Stopped down outside the images were even more crisp. The wide field of view is incredible. You get everything in. Close focus lets you get some cool foreground/background shots that you cannot get without a wide angle. Less than Canon and comes with a hood. If you are on the fence about which lens to buy, this is it. I kept checking daily for weeks until I found it in stock. It was out in hours. The demand for this lens is great for a reason. B&H had the best price and was the only one that had it in stock. [...]

When I bought an f/2.8 "pro" lens, I expected it to be usable wide open. I was very disappointed to find my copy of this lens was unsuitable to achieve professional results when used wide open. At f/2.8 it was sharp enough at the center, but consistently too soft around the edges. The lens did much better when stopped down to f/5.6. Perhaps I just didn't receive a very good copy.

If I have to stop down the Tokina to f/5.6 to get professional results, I figured I might as well exchanged it for a Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM which gets terrific reviews and has a greater zoom ratio.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Canon APS-C DSLRs:

From the outside, this lens is incredible considering it's not a L lens . The lens hood is always nice to have and the build quality is on par with most L lenses. Even though the build quality is fantastic and the lens itself is kind of like a tank, the weight isn't really an issue for me.Now on the to performance. I'm a semi-pro photographer and a pro videographer so the main purpose for this lens was to shoot ultra-wide establishing shots for my video projects. I own a Canon EOS 7D and with the glidecam or a slider, it's hard to tell the difference between this and the 5Dmkii/iii 16-35mm combo; the lens enables you to capture almost everything in sight. When doing video, f/2.8 is usable since viewers don't really pay attention to the edges. So over all, this is a great ultra wide lens for video purposes on a crop-sensored lens. Now onto the photography side...Overall, this is still a good lens for photography. The lens is very sharp at f/2.8 in the middle but color fringing is apparent on the edges. I found that until about f/8, the edges are noticeably soft. If you're going to crop a picture that contains any edges, I would highly advise against it... But then again, having that 2.8 stop in low light conditions definitely out weighs the slight color fringing and softness on the edges. Also, using the f/2.8 and having your subject in the middle creates awesome bokeh. Auto focus is as good as my 28-135 kit lens that I got with my 7D and it's pretty quiet (so it's not bad but not incredibly good) I'm glad I purchased this lens instead of the canon 10-22. Overall-Pros:-Dramatic and just simply awesome images created by the 11mm focal length-f/2.8 for low light conditions-Creamy bokeh at f/2.8-excellent for video -A very good value compared to the Canon-Lens hood is an awesome accessory that cannot be passed up (yes, I'm talking to you non-L canon lenses)-excellent build quality-relatively fast focusing for a 3rd party lens with little sound. Cons:-Soft edges until f/8-Color fringing at f/2.8-weird switching from auto focus to manual focus (but it's not a big deal at all)conclusion: BUY IT. The only reason why I gave it a 4/5 is because of the soft edges and color fringing. But the pros definitely outweigh the cons. I would buy this lens anyday.

I shoot action videos in which I want the viewer to feel that they are a part of the action. I want them to feel what it is like at the top of the mountain, or how steep it is up the mountain face; this lens catches that without fisheye.
The clutch AF/MF is easily engaged without losing a beat or disengaging from my viewfinder.

I am very pleased with this lens!

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Canon APS-C DSLRs:

I bought this lens because, to date, I had some pretty basic Canon lenses and I wanted something wider, and faster for indoor shots. I am a serious photography hobbyist, and would characterize my shots generally as "wide angle," vs telephoto. Which means, I like street scenes, and landscapes, and the "big picture" more than anything. So, when I found out I was going to China for three weeks, this lens was an absolute must have. This lens does exactly what it advertises - wide shots with low light. Though I knew what I was getting, I can almost say, however, that it was too wide in some instances, for what I was looking for. This is because, for example, you almost have to be on top of the subject to get a great picture. If you are taking a picture of a scene that is across the street, I find the details are so small, you may loose some of the character you are trying to capture with the limits of your resolution. I did read somewhere that your field of view on the lens is about 170 degrees. All this to say, I have no regrets. The lens is sharp and fast and undistorted. But ultimately, for me, I find I use this lens less than I thought I would, and will probably look next to buy something like a 18-270mm to complement this lens.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Canon APS-C DSLRs:

I originally purchased this lens for real estate work. The ultra wide angle and the fast 2.8 aperture were ideal for capturing the tight shooting conditions that homes have to offer. Little did I know upon purchasing this lens, I would be using it for more than real estate. Having it in my bag at a motocross shoot, I decided to give a shot. Motocross isn't the easiest sport to shoot considering the fast paced action. Paired with a 7D I was a amazed at how quickly and accurately this lens focused for being a 3rd party lens. Not only did the focus outperform expectations, I was delighted with the color, everything popped, which is ideal when you capture landscape, sky and the rider. I have a also used this lens for many mountain bike shoots only to be impressed with similar results. The construction is different than Canon brand lenses, but it still feels just as durable. The only noticeable characteristic that some may consider a con is the autofocus noise. It is noticeable, but not enough to turn down this performance lens. It is nearly half the price of a Canon brand equivalent, so I never expected it to be on par with the name brand yet it performs and keeps performing. The switch between autofocus is neat and convenient. To engage autofocus, you simply push the focus ring toward the front of the lens and to engage manual focus you pull it toward the camera body. If you are looking for an ultra wide on a budget, this is the way to go! So impressed that this lens is always mounted to either of my bodies because I always find a use for it.

I use the product with my canon 7D when I'm traveling out and about. Interior shots of offices and residential homes come out dynamic with minimal distortion even at 11mm. Also this lens is perfect for capturing landscape and architecture. When in video mode the lens gives great quality forage, up until dusk. When in the dark, minimal lighting will suffice. Also I love the weight of the len. Its just the right weight, not too light our too heavy.

The only thing I am worried about is the mechanism for auto and manual focus. It sometimes feel insecure...

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Canon APS-C DSLRs:

This lense is fantastic. I bought it for the intention of using it for music videos. Not only did it satisfy my needs, it blew them away. The 2.8 fs makes it perfect for low lighting situations while the 11-16 mm makes getting a whole room in a shot possible. Using the lense to your own style can make it look give it an artistic to commercial

Nothing will be too close anymore! I bought this lens to make outdoor scenery, wedding, and architectural photography. So far I only use the lens outdoor. The result are great and sharp considering how wide it is. Only read good reviews and will definatly refere this lens to friends and who ever is looking for a super wide angle.

Tis is my first wide angle lens!

                          Ups:
                          - Geometry distortion are mininial
                          - Built like a tank
                          - Comes with hood (save some $$)

                          Downs:
                          - Still have to figure out why some images are soft
                          - Obeserved chromatic aberrations

Super wide at 11mm and crisp pictures

I was torn between this lens and the Canon 10-22, and I'm very glad I went with the Tokina

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Canon APS-C DSLRs:

I've compared some other wide angle lenses with this one before buying, and now I'm happy that I've chosen Tokina.

f/2.8 is better than it's competitors.

Do not think of buying another lens (ex. f/4) just because it's cheaper.
