The Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX lens is exclusively designed for use with Digital SLR cameras, and provides a super wide-angle zoom range, ideal for the tightest of interiors, as well as for dramatic landscape photography.

This lens features the exclusive "Focus Clutch Mechanism", a signature of the Tokina PRO series lenses which provides a faster, smoother autofocus operation with a smooth manual focus action not normally found in autofocus lenses.

Two Aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design, to correct for spherical aberrations. It also incorporates internal focusing to prevent deterioration of the optical quality at close distances and to eliminate rotation of the front barrel during focusing.

Note: Equivalent focal length in 35mm terms when used on a digital camera is 18-36mm.

Note! DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with "full-frame" FX digital or 35mm film SLR cameras. AF not supported by D5000, D3100, D3000, D5100, D40 & D60 cameras.

Fast, ultra-wide angle zoom lens with a constant f/4 aperture

I spent 8 months agonizing about which wide-angle to get, Tokina or Sigma. I read every review and blog I could find. I finally ordered the Tokina from B+H and it was delivered to me in SE Pennsylvania the next day (with standard UPS shipping). Considered waiting for the 11-16 2.8 to come out but the zoom range is to small for a walk-around lens. I might buy that one too for weddings.I haven't had so much fun taking photos since I bought my D-80 + 18-135 kit lens in September 2006. The ability to shoot the same scene from different perspectives gives me the ability to shoot artistically right out of the box. With this lens creativity comes without effort or thought. I look through the viewfinder and can see the whole scene in one glance. I put the camera down and have to turn my head 90% and look twice to take it all inamazing! If I had it to do over I would have gotten this lens before I bought the 70-200 as simple cropping of images from the kit zoom can replicate that focal length but there is no way to get wider in post processing.I process all of my Tokina 12-24 photos (personal use and weddings) through DXO Optics. DXO corrects C.A. (purple fringing) automatically, even in Jpegs. DXO gives the ability to keep the semi-fisheye look for people photos (straight lines at edges are curved but people look fairly normal) or to completely correct distortion for landscapes (people at the edges of the scene get their faces stretched when distortion is corrected but straight lines are straight again). This gives me the option of printing two very different photos from every single image captured.FT Job is Probation/Parole Officer, I will use this lens for interior and location photos of search/seizure details. I was using 17-50 2.8 Tamron but it takes four shots to get an image of the whole room. The Tokina 12-24 4 does it in two. The loss of f-stop is no big deal b/c the Tokina can shoot at slower shutter speeds w/o blurring. It will be much less difficult to explain interior layout to the Judge/Jury now. Also the Tokina focuses close enough at 24mm to record images of seized contraband (guns, drugs, etc.) without cropping (can't do that for evidence photos). Can't use DXO for Forensic applications as all images must be un-altered originals. Picked the Tokina over Sigma because, even though the extra 2mm at the wide end would be nice, the Tokina has less distortion than the Sigma at the wide end and none at the long end (24mm).I bought the Hoya Pro1 digital UV filter. It is slim (no dark corners) and accepts the standard lens cap. I need to buy a split ND filter because there is so much sky in landscape images because it's wide-angle top to bottom as well as side to side. (If I had more to spend I would get a D300 instead as the Active D-lighting eliminates blown out sky in landscapes).Don't waste any more time trying to choose a wide-angle lens. Just get one and start having fun!

Expertise: Forensic Professional, Hobbyist and some weddings.

Problems Encountered: I have read that the lens doesn't extend when zooming (technically true) but the front element does move back and forward below the filter threads when zooming. I would definitely get a UV filter to keep dust from getting in to the lens interior surfaces when zooming. I got dust inside my Tokina and am greatly annoyed.

Previous Equivalent Item Owned: D80, Nikon 18-135 3.5-5.6 kit lens, Nikon 70-200 2.8, Nikon 50 1.8, Tokina 17-50 2.8

Items I Recommend: Hoya Pro1 UV filter.

[...]. My new Tokina ATX 124 lens is much better but it is still unsharp on the right side of the image when enlarged at 100% in the computer. I have noticed that if I use a very small aperture (f/16 or smaller)the sharpness of this lens improves a lot and makes it a very sharp lens all around but...who shoots only at f/16 all the time !!! So, I may exchange it for the Nikon 12-24 f/4. No wonder the Nikon is twice as expensive...It has to be much better I'm sure. Otherwise, good construction, well built and easy to use. One other thing. F/4 at 12mm underexposes the image about 1/2 a stop when compared to F/4 at 24mm. I am very disappointed.

Corner to corner sharpness is excellent. Minor improvement noticed from 6.3-8 (as is the case for most lenses). The build quality is outstanding. Very heavy, easy to mount, and rings run smooth. The AF/MF mechanism doesn't feel up to par with the build quality of the rest of the lens, but still feels okay. Autofccus is loud and it hunts in low light. I am happy with this lens and look forward to using it for many years to come.

Did an enormous amount of research on this lens v competition. It certainly backs up what I have read.
I was concerned 12mm would not be wide enough but on a DX it works out great.
    Positives:
Sharp images across the frame, at F8 it is fantastic
Solid build with silky smooth zoom
Plenty of light even though F4
    Excellent color rendition
    Good resistance to flare
Don't see any evidence of ca but my camera may be removing it

I just bought this lens about a month ago, and have been shooting in a city aspect with this lens. And the results were better than I thought. It's a little heavy but u will have that with good glass. The wide angle ranger is perfect for capturing a whole lot in one shot. Ending thought I'm not a professional by any means but I would rate this lens a solid 9 out of 10 for me. Does what I want and more.

Purchased for my daughter because she does not own an ultra wide. Slapped this on my camera for about 5 shots before I gave it to her. Great lens, I own the 11-16 2.8 so I knew what to look for. If you can find it in stock and have a screw drive Nikon grab this baby before it goes away, save the money vs the new model. f4 is way fast enough on an ultra wide and focus is spot on and light speed. It's a Tokina, built like a tank.

You have to watch your horizontal line at the lowest range ( 12 mm )but very acceptable at middle range , 18 mm and higher.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX Lens:

I was a bit skeptical buying a third party lens, but overall I am very pleased. The build quality is very good (better than some of my Nikkors, in fact), and I haven't noticed any optical deficiencies other than what is typical for ultra wide angle lenses (corners appear stretched out of course). This is my first non AF-S lens, so I was also worried about how loud or slow it might be. I was surprised that focus turned out to be faster than ANY of my Nikkor AF-S lenses (105mm f/2.8 macro, 35mm f/1.8, 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5) and dead-on accurate. Yes, you can hear the screw drive, but it's a very "smooth" sound (at least on my D300), which I can't really imagine being a problem for anyone. It's only slightly louder than the AF-S motors I've used, and much quieter than any SLR mirror slap I've heard. I've used it in the field for landscape photography a few times now with no significant problems. Setting the lens to 12mm and getting very close to your foreground subject (3 to 6 inches from the tip of the lens) can create some very dynamic compositions, but it definitely takes some practice to get just right. The only thing I don't like about the lens is the awkward method of switching from AF to MF (which is pulling the whole focus ring toward the camera), but that's something I can live with considering this lens is less than half the cost of the comparable Nikkor. One other thing worth noting is that the supplied lens hood is fairly large in diameter (it needs to be in order to avoid vignetting). It can be reversed and stored on the lens like most modern Nikkors, but that will definitely increase the amount of space the lens takes up in a crammed hiking backpack. If that's a problem for you, just do like I do and clip the hood to the outside of your pack.

I thought a lot about this purchase, as it will probably be the last lens I buy.

All my other lenses are Nikkor FX, but I needed just a bit more wide angle for interiors and narrow streets while traveling.

The quality and performance are what I expected, having had some Tokinas from the early 1980s: nearly as good as Nikkor, for a fraction of the price. I'm glad I got this screw-drive before they discontinued it.

bought this lens at [$], which was a good $250 less than its much highly regarded counter part 11-16.although it lacks 1mm at the wide end, is only f/4, tends to have more CA and is generally less sharp as a lens, i have no regrets and absolutely love this gem. i tried the 11-16 before buying the 124, and truth be told, apart from those differences i stated above, the 11-16 didn't hold anything over the 124. in fact, the 11-16 was prone to glare, and its colours were never saturated enough - there was not one photo i didn't have to post process heavily.perhaps i got a dud copy of the 11-16, maybe its because of the lighting in my photos (they were takin outdoors at 6pm in the evening), but i'm still perfectly happy with the 124. so if you're broke or on a major budget, and you dont need crystal clear clarity, AND if you've got an AF motor in your camera... this lens is the one for you.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX Lens:

I have used this lens for a couple weeks now and so far am quite pleased by the performance. No surprises, from my perspective sharp, clear to edge and well made. A bit of a flare problem when pointed towards the sun but that was expected.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX Lens:

You will not regret of having this lens! I waited for 2-3 rounds (due to shortage of not manufacturing Version 1) and finally B&H have them in stock! I went to Hong Kong but all the shops did not have it and only version 2 was available. Better get it before Tokina decides not producing it anymore!
It produce shape images any where from F5.6 onwards. Range is wide enough for any landscape, group pictures etc. I am not a pro but now I do feel like when you have excellent quality pictures produced from this lens!
I have an D90 and Auto Focus is very fast, don't consider about of buying Version 2 unless your body has no built-in motor.
I would like to give Tokina 5 stars of having such quality lens while keeping the price low. Thank you so much!

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX Lens:

I've been wanting a super wide lens for my Nikon D7000 but didn't want to spend the big bucks for a Nikkor lens. I'd heard good things about the Tokina from friends and decided to give it a try. It's just what I needed since my other wide angle zoom starts at 18mm. It was priced right and the quality is great.

Incredible lens. Great contrast, color and the build quality is top notch. I know the 11-16 2.8 is the lens everyone lusts after, but the price, useful zoom range and image quality of this original Tokina ultrawide makes it the lens for your bag!
