The Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base is a gimbal-type tripod head that incorporates an elevated tilt mechanism and adjustable platform to make the camera/lens' center of gravity and tilt axis of the head be perfectly aligned.
Things once thought of as impossible with a ballhead are nothing short of mundane with a Wimberley, because a weightless camera/lens combo (even a 600mm f/4 w/ large body) can literally be controlled with one finger. Point the rig where you want and take the hand away, and it stays exactly where you put it.
The Version II head is more compact and lightweight, features a redesigned panning base, "soft-touch" knobs, and includes a built-in Arca-type quick release base. Visit lens chart for a chart of compatible lens plates and cameras.

I could rarely get a good in focus photo before I purchased the Wimberley Gimbal head. My Nikon 600mm and my D700 is so lightweight to use when fitted with the Wimberley. You can quickly move and lock in as needed or leave it unlocked for ready to use moments as required. Build quality is A1, worth the money.

Went on a birding outing and did not miss a shot. Went from tilting down into a marsh to following skimmers flying above the water to over head all in one fell swoop! absolutely fantastic head. No messing around, no having the ball head flopping over, just great pictures! Don't know what I did before.
It is well made, sturdy, easy to operate.

I have been using a Wimberley Sidekick for the past few years with my Nikon 500 f/4. That setup was ok but, it appears to be wearing out my Arca-Swiss Z1 ball head. The switch to the full Wimberley WH-200 gimbal head was a major upgrade. It works MUCH BETTER than the Sidekick. It is very stable and allows more precise setting of the tension for elevation and rotation.

I plan on using this for wildlife and scenics, this is an excellent product and I love it. I wished I had bought it 10 years ago. and do NOT reccomend anyone trying to save $100 by buying a cheaper version, not worth it if you are using a $10k lense or more. this is a quality product and I would reccomend u buy it, you wont regret it. it is solid and easy to use. it is heavy but thats ok for the excellent quality.

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:
I use a Nikon 200-400 VRII f4 with a 1.4 TC on a D3 for bird photography. Thats a lot of lens and a lot of weight. I also do a lot of wildlife photography, which by its nature is from a vehicle a lot of the time. I've been reluctant to use a tripod because of space and weight constraints. I finally broke down and bought the Wimberley head to mount on a Gitzo (GT 3541 6X)carbon fiber tripod. The arrangement has changed my life. Yes its extra weight and takes space. But there are shots I have which I would never have made without the arrangement. The genius of the Wimberley is that the camera is perfectly balanced and locked on the head without tightening down the motion control. So you're always ready and can get absolute freedom in a 270 degree sphere of movement for the lens above the tripod. Birds flying fast while gaining or losing altitude? No problem. You can follow effortlessly. The design literally makes the camera weightless. The problem is what to do if you're in a tight space, e.g., in the back of a standard conversion LandCruiser in Africa. Even if you've got the private vehicle, many have pre-configured row seating. You can make it work. But if I don't have space I revert to beanbag or monopod with a ball head. The arrangement is expensive. But if you've got the lens and the body you can probably afford it. Or should find a way to. It has vastly expanded the usability of my camera gear.

I am using this with a Nikon 500mm lens. It is easy to get the camera on and off and easy to change the balance (hood on or off, teleconverter or not). A must have for a big lens.

I use this in conjunction with Canon super telephoto lens for bird and wildlife. These heavy setups become weightless when mounted on the head. Outstanding design and build quality

The Gimbal tripod head is very high quality and well engineered. The online ordering process was less than satisfactory. I tried to see online what else I would need (by clicking on essential accessories). I ordered it and shipped it to Australia only to discover I needed a separate foot plat for my Nikon 300mm lens. This meant I have had to order the footplate separately and of course the shipping cost this time around is more than the value of the product - not happy. My tip - check that you have all you need before placing your order.

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:
Not to be overly dramatic, but I have never been around anything as high in quality as this Wimberley Gimbal head. I went from "How could they charge so much for such a simple device?" to "I am grateful they don't charge 2 grand for this mount because I would now pay that."
A few weeks ago I bought a Canon 800mm lens. Of course it totally overwhelmed both my old tripod and my old ball head. (Manffrotto 322RC2) the tiniest breeze and it was rock'n roll'n. This Wimberley head is ROCK SOLID. Mostly, I was concerned about my new 15 thousand dollar lens dropping. (With my 3k camera attached) I now have supreme confidence in my setup. My gear is going nowhere. After basic security, I was amazed by my photos. The difference in stability is amazing. I take shots mostly from my balcony 400 feet up, in the wind. NO PROB. ROCK STEADY.
Don't do like I did and buy more and more expensive mounts until you finally buy this one. Save a pile of money and just get this one first.

This head mount is a must have for big lenses. I have the Nikon 400mm f/2.8, which is heavy, but on this mount, it moves with a touch of one finger and stays where you move it. It provides all the stability needed and pans smoothly. It's heavy too, but worth its weight.
It's expensive alone, but then a specific foot replace for the lens is need, which will cost an extra $78.
Put this setup on any good carbon fiber tripod and you'll be very happy!

If it were possible I would give this product ten stars. It does everything they say it will effortlessly. It is easy to take my camera and lens in and out, and when balanced, it stays wherever you point it. Yesterday I got stunning shots of Ospreys mating. I waited 40 minutes with the camera trained on the nest. When the female arrived and the action started, I needed to only press the shutter. I am becoming fluent in capturing birds in flight very quickly. I cannot say enough good things about this product.

This is the best head for my Gitzo tripod that I have ever used. I typically use a 500 mm Canon f/4 lens with a Series II Canon 1.4 Extender and a Canon 1ds Mark III camera to capture images of flying raptors or scampering pikas. The WH-200 smooth action and easy-to-access-without-looking control knobs make this head a dream come true for action-oriented wildlife photographers. Also, everything can be securely locked in place for carrying tripod, camera, and lens over the shoulder when walking to your next venue. I highly recommend this head to any photographer using extreme telephotos with a tripod.

Works like a dream. My setup of D300, TC, and 500mm VR float with the greatest of ease, yet when I really lock it down I don't have to worry about stability.

Comments about Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base:
For the last year and a half I had been using a large ball head mount. The frustration of my 200-400mm f/4 VR unexpectedly tipping to one side or the other on the tripod, usually pinching my hand and/or fingers hard, was very irritating! This reminded me of a phrase: "with pain come change" - I started researching different tripod heads for my Nature/Wildlife photography. I soon realized that the option was narrowed quickly to the Wimberley Gimbel heads!! My expectations were met, maybe exceeded, once I changed out the ball head with the Wimberley Gimbel ! The ease of use of the WH-200, the quality of material, and just the confiidence it brings to its use in the field is beyond outstanding!! Not to mention the feeling like you are moreso up with the professionals that use the same product! I highly reccomend the Whimberley WH-200 Gimbel Tripod Head II !!

You don't have to hold a heavy camera/lens to take pictures. I notice all the serious photographers have the Wimberly Gimble head on their tripods. I am an amature but look to take professional pictures. This is the best and a once in a lifetime purchase, so go for the best.
