The Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera is a compact, advanced point-and-shoot camera featuring a 12.1 megapixel 1/1.7" high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor to produce high quality still imagery and full HD 1080p video with notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 12800. The sensor and processor work together to form the Canon HS SYSTEM, which helps to improve the image quality of dimly-lit shots by reducing noise and enhancing the overall clarity. Additionally, the processor offers a range of speed-related assets throughout the camera, including a maximum sustained full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 9.3 fps for over 500 shots as well as a High Speed AF system for maintained sharpness in a variety of shooting conditions.

The built-in Canon 5x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-140mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto length perspectives. A maximum aperture of f/1.8-2.8 contributes to working in low lighting, regardless of focal length, and also helps to isolate subject matter for shallow depth of field images. Benefitting this lens' coverage is Intelligent IS image stabilization, which automatically employs one of six distinct stabilization modes to help minimize the appearance of camera shake depending on the shooting situation. Also helping to stabilize the camera while shooting is a built-in optical viewfinder that provides an additional point of contact between one and the camera. This finder is also an ideal alternative to the rear LCD monitor when working in bright conditions or for tracking quickly moving subjects. For live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation, the 3.0" 922k-dot LCD monitor is available and provides a bright, clear means for image composition and review.

For instant sharing and transferring of photos and movies, built-in wireless connectivity is available and helps to expedite sending imagery directly to an Android or iOS mobile device through the use of the free Canon CameraWindow app. Also helpful is the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, which serves as an intuitive interface for uploading images directly to social networking and cloud sites from the G16.

12.1MP High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 6 Image Processor
The 12.1 megapixel 1/1.7" CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor work in concert to produce high resolution still imagery and full HD video recording with notable low-light sensitivity and quality. The combination of these two technologies creates the Canon HS SYSTEM, which provides a maximum sensitivity of ISO 12800 with minimal noise and enhanced clarity to truly benefit impressive image making in dimly-lit situations. The processor also contributes to overall speed throughout the camera, including High Speed AF, Manual Focus Peaking, and a top continuous shooting rate of 12.2 fps for the first six images with a sustained shooting rate of 9.3 fps for over 500 consecutive images, as well as 1080p video recording at 60 fps.
Canon 5x Optical Zoom Lens
The built-in Canon 5x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-140mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit working in a wide array of situations. The f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low lighting at both ends of the zoom range and also contributes to producing shallow depth of field and selective focus imagery. The lens' performance is further enhanced through the inclusion of Intelligent IS image stabilization, which helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by automatically selecting from six different optimized stabilization modes depending on the specific shooting conditions. The Normal setting corrects for a wide range of movements and is ideal for still photography; the Panning setting detects when panning shots are being made and does not compensate for lateral shake; the Macro (Hybrid) setting specifically corrects for shift-type shake that is common when working with close-up subject matter; the Dynamic mode is highly effective for video work and wide-angle settings and helps to minimize common shake that occurs while walking or moving with the camera; the Powered setting is suited for shooting at the telephoto end of the zoom range when hand shake is most prevalent; and Tripod mode simply turns off the IS since it is no longer needed.
Full HD Video Recording
Full HD 1080p video recording is supported with a frame rate up to 60 fps for high resolution, fluid rendering of subjects. Direct playback is possible on an HDTV via the integrated HDMI port, with HDMI-CEC support, and 60 fps movies are saved in the Internet-friendly MP4 format for expedited online sharing and editing. When recording at 30 fps, the DIGIC 6 processor and Fine Movie Detail Processing work together to enhance noise reduction and overall clarity.
Built-In Wireless Connectivity
Built-in Wi-Fi allows direct, wireless transferring of photos and videos to mobile devices and PCs for instant online sharing to social networking sites and cloud-based storage sites. The CANON iMAGE GATEWAY helps to expedite this process through an intuitive workflow, and the free Canon CameraWindow app, available for iOS and Android devices, enables efficient transferring control and also permits GPS tagging to images. An enhanced Wi-Fi set-up also works to streamline connecting to wireless hot spots, too, as WEP Key input is no longer needed and wireless preferences can easily be modified through a web browser. Additionally, Automatic Switching via the Image Sync function works to automatically sync images with any discovered and linked PC within a designated network or, alternatively, images are temporarily sent to the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY for later transferring.
Other Camera Features
  • A large, bright 3.0" 922k-dot LCD monitor is available for live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation.
  • An optical viewfinder is integrated into the design to benefit shooting in bright conditions as well as being a more natural method for tracking moving subjects.
  • Multi aspect RAW permits shooting in a variety of aspect ratios (16:9, 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 4:5) with the uncompressed 12-bit RAW file type to more individually suit the type of image being created. RAW+JPEG shooting is also supported.
  • A hot shoe is incorporated to permit the use of an off-camera, external flash and is compatible with Canon Speedlite flashes for utilizing the intelligent E-TTL II flash metering system.
  • Built-in HDR image creation automatically records multiple frames into a single image to garner greater highlight and shadow detail with an extended range of mid-tones.
  • Sub-modes, such as Art Bold, Art Vivid, Art Standard, and Art Embossed, allow you to more precisely refine the final output and appearance of imagery in-camera.
  • Dedicated star shooting modes benefit shooting photos and movies of the night sky and work to balance the exposure settings necessary for nighttime shooting.
  • Hybrid Auto records four seconds of HD 720p video with each still image and then automatically joins the stills and movies together into a highlight reel.
  • A Dual Axis Electronic Level can be displayed on the rear LCD or in the optical viewfinder to provide a referential horizon line for consistent, parallel lines. The dual axis design shows both horizontal roll and vertical pitch to help ensure level positioning in any shooting orientation.
  • A Front Dial is incorporated into the design to allow more intuitive and accessible control over shooting settings such as aperture, shutter speed, step zoom, white balance, i-Contrast, and aspect ratio.
  • Canon's Direct Print system is supported for expedited connection and printing with a PIXMA or SELPHY directly from the camera.

I was looking for a camera that would give me good image quality without the size and bulk of my DSLR. I was also hoping for good low-light performance. I have purchased several Point & Shoot cameras and been disappointed with all. I prefer to capture in RAW mode so I can adjust the development of the image. The G16 affords me just that.
I took the camera with a group viewing the inside of an old historic building this weekend, I found at a 1x zoom I had excellent low light performance and could get an ISO of 80 in Aperture priority. However increasing to 5x quickly brought me to 3200 ISO and a noisy photo.
That is very likely a harsh and unfair judgement as the lighting was really bad and bottom line to keep a tolerable shutter speed a higher ISO was required. My friend with a Full Frame had the same experience. I did under expose the photo a few times which brought about a slow shutter speed. This required bracing the camera against a solid object to get a picture. This worked well and I got several good photos in a rather dark room without flash (not allowed) this way.
I found the View Finder difficult to use, but using the screen on back I could see the photo and all the necessary information required to create a great shot, this provided a very ergonomic picture taking experience, I would say I prefer it over my DSLR. Yes it can be done the same with my DSLR but the camera is too heavy to make it comfortable.
The image quality is easily as good as my DSLR. The f1.8 to f2.8 lens makes it a very good low light camera and an excellent outdoor camera. I intend to use it as my general walk around camera. I believe street photography may be calling me.
Overall I believe I will be using this camera as much as my DSLR.

Bought this camera as a complement to my SLR based on feature set and noticed the following:

Pros:
Practically no shutter lag
AF works well on first image and in low light
Good control over AF zones
Large aperture - good in low light
Battery lasts reasonably long
Good image quality despite moderate resolution
Intuitive UI (via screen)

Cons:
Autofocus during continuous shooting is garbage - 80% of photos taken with Continuous AF are blurry (BIGGEST issue I've seen in stark contrast with what Canon may make you believe the camera can do - admittedly G16 does not use phase contrast focusing)
Ergonomics could be better - primary issue is dial on back: registers click instead of turn half of the times
Retracted lens protected by flimsy baffles, no lens cap
Environmental sealing could be better
Can be stopped down to f/8 only (to be fair this is not bad for a P&S camera)
Some awkward limitations on setting ISO and/or aperture in portrait and HDR modes

Great camera if you don't need Continuous AF (Canon needs to improve this) and you don't get frustrated with the dial in the back. In my experience not useful for shooting series of photos of moving subjects.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

We were looking for a camera good for taking pictures of our Grandchildren. I bought this one because it has a viewfinder, needed for sunny days outside, and for the short shutter lag. I am very impressed with how quickly it takes the shot! Also works well inside in low light.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I use this camera for general family photos but my wife who is a graphic artist uses this camera for various photography pieces including panels where she was able to blow up images to very large sizes. All the colors and detail are excellent. I like flexibility of setting it to auto and just shooting away but also being able to use manual features. I like the way the camera feels in my hand it is light and quick to power up and start shooting. Also the video quality is pretty good. All around good point and shoot camera.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I got this camera a week ago so I have very limited experience taking photos with it. One of the main reasons that I bought it was that it was a point and shoot with a viewfinder. I immediately discovered that the viewfinder is very limited. Here's why:
            1. When zoomed in, the lens becomes visible in the viewfinder.
            2. The viewfinder does not show camera settings like the LCD display does.
            3. The viewfinder does not display photos in playback mode like the LCD screen does.

I live out west where the sun is very bright most of the time making it difficult to see the LCD display.

The menu is also tedious. When you change a setting, you have to scroll through the entire menu to find and change a setting. Then when you want to change that setting back to what it was before, you have to scroll through the entire menu again. In other words, the menu does not go back to where you left off the last time. I will mostly likely return this camera.

As I persue more frequent photography outings, I wanted a pocket camera to compliment my DSLR, this camera provides it completely. It includes many of the settings normal found on DSLRs but in a compact version with exceptionally sharp photographs. Unlike many small cameras, it has a viewfinder for use outdoors especially during bright sunny days.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

As a happy user of the Canon Powershot G10, I was really looking forward to the G16 based upon faster lens, faster autofocus and better low light. I am not happy that the heavy duty build quality of the G10 has been lost to a lighter plastic build on the G16. I also find that the operation of the camera is less intuitive and I was frustrated to find out that there was only a quick reference guide included with the camera and you had to download an online pdf version to learn to use the intermediate and advanced features.

I considered returning it but decided that I will likely adjust to it in the end and I am more likely to have this camera handy than a dslr for spontaneous shooting.

I ordered this after my Nikon P7100 was stolen. My first Canon, it is a nice camera. Takes sharp images...think I would rather have the P7100 though.

The color are very good. I have a big reflex. I bought this one to carry with me. I use it mostly insidei. I am very satisfy

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

Loved my Canon G9 but wanted to upgrade. I purchased the Canon G1X primarily because of its large sensor. After a trip to the Grand Canyon I compared the photos with previous G9 photos. Seeing no real difference, even when zoomed in to the maximum, I returned the camera to B&H. Other reasons; larger and heavier than the G9, extra time to remove lens cover and flip the LCD screen. I purchased the Canon G16 instead. Love this camera! Love the size, weight, filters, etc., and the DIGIC 6 processor produces noticeably better photos than the G9. This is my "go to" camera for the next few years! My wife now has a new camera also...a Canon G9 with a live-in consultant!

Great camera and many features. I wish the CMOS sensor was larger, but regardless the photo quality is exceptional. This is a great addition to my Mark II 5D giving me a smaller alternative to lugging around my big camera. The camera is a bit larger than other Point and Shoot but I think it is well worth the extra size

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I already use a Canon Rebel XTi DSLR so I was hoping to stay in the Canon family. Got the G16 for my wife to use as a point-and-shoot. She loves it! She uses the automatic setting to take quick pictures and great video of the grandkids. It feels great and secure in your hand. This camera is so easy our 5 year old grandson walked around taking some great pictures at a birthday party recently! Pictures easily downloaded to my iMac using the same cable as my Canon DSLR. It is pricey - but very well made.

I just received this camera but can tell already this will be my favorite "go to" camera! Nice and compact but high quality photos will make this perfect for my horseback trips and Harley rides. I love that it has manual controls in case I should see a beautiful waterfall to photograph and yet is fast enough to capture action and not miss a beat. The Wifi is also extremely handy and will allow me to post to social media right from my smart phone and tablet which will be great on trips. Very glad I purchased and it had come highly recommended from a long time friend who has been a long time Canon user. This is my first Canon as I have always shot Nikon.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I have been using this camera for several months and I have to say I really like it. The camera is great for: Portraits, Macro, Low lighting and pretty much any kind of shot in the 6.1-30.5mm (28-140mm in 35mm equivalent).
Good but not the best for landscapes, in my opinion 6.1mm (28mm in 35mm equivalent) can sometimes be a little narrow.

                        The good:
                        -Excellent picture quality
-Fast and accurate autofocus (using P, Tv, Av and M modes)
                        -Good in low lighting
                        -Great ergonomics, comfortable to grip
                        -Long lasting battery
                        -High definition screen
-Very versatile, works in the 28-140mm (35mm equivalent) range and also does macro
-Small but sometimes very useful viewfinder
-Light enough to carry with me anywhere I go (although it is not the lightest)

                        The bad:
-The camera in Auto mode focuses on anything but not in my subject. I switched it to P mode and the problem was solved, now I rarely use Auto mode.
-After a month of use the rubber door/gate that you open to connect the USB cable stopped closing with no reason. Now it is always open!
-It does not include the USB cable (it has to be purchased separately)

Because of the quality issue with the rubber door/gate mentioned above I give it 4 starts, otherwise it would have gotten 5.

I would buy this camera again and I would recommend it to a friend.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I started out with. G5 for P&S convenience many years ago, switched to a G9 for the past 10 years, now onto the G16. They just keep getting better in every way. This one is an easier function interface, the shutter click is quieter, the grip could be a little better (G9 was more comfortable and secure feeling). Haven't interfaced with the web yet, main complaint is lack of carry along booklet for reference when remote or international. Overall, I love it.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

We keep the G16 at the ready all the time to grab quick shots before the opportunity passes. We like the built-in lens cover because we don't have to fumble around, looking for a place to put a lens cap before we shoot.

Because it is compact and always at the ready, missed pictures are a thing of the past. The image quality cannot hope to compare with that of our DSLRs; but, it gets the shots our DSLRs miss!

The built-in level indicator is a terrific aid to shooting.

We bought a spare battery to have on hand; but, I don't think we'll ever need to use it. Battery life is that good!

I cannot think of a single bad thing to say about this little gem. It is a great little intermediate camera.

Used for parties, etc, where my DSLR is too bulky.

Better than my old G10 in low light.

The optical finder is very useful, except it doesn't show the focus point.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I am a DLSR owner and bought this camera my wife as her old point and shoot is getting up in years. When I opened it up my first thought was "wow this baby is built like a brick Outhouse" instead of many that feel like you are holding the box that your bar of soap came in. It has enough dials and buttons to actually do creative photography without always diving into a bazillion menus to change basic items like shutter speed, ISO, or aperture. Nothing like trying to take a picture of an animal or pet running around and by the time you get through the menus the critter has died from old age. The pictures come out sharp and the colors very crisp. The image stabilization seems to do a good job so you don't always have to use the flash on indoor low light pictures. So far I am very impressed with this camera. I am giving it a 5 rating not that it is perfect, but I would put it in the top picks for a point and shoot camera.
