The Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera is a compact, advanced point-and-shoot camera featuring a 12.1 megapixel 1/1.7" high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor to produce high quality still imagery and full HD 1080p video with notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 12800. The sensor and processor work together to form the Canon HS SYSTEM, which helps to improve the image quality of dimly-lit shots by reducing noise and enhancing the overall clarity. Additionally, the processor offers a range of speed-related assets throughout the camera, including a maximum sustained full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 9.3 fps for over 500 shots as well as a High Speed AF system for maintained sharpness in a variety of shooting conditions.

The built-in Canon 5x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-140mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto length perspectives. A maximum aperture of f/1.8-2.8 contributes to working in low lighting, regardless of focal length, and also helps to isolate subject matter for shallow depth of field images. Benefitting this lens' coverage is Intelligent IS image stabilization, which automatically employs one of six distinct stabilization modes to help minimize the appearance of camera shake depending on the shooting situation. Also helping to stabilize the camera while shooting is a built-in optical viewfinder that provides an additional point of contact between one and the camera. This finder is also an ideal alternative to the rear LCD monitor when working in bright conditions or for tracking quickly moving subjects. For live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation, the 3.0" 922k-dot LCD monitor is available and provides a bright, clear means for image composition and review.

For instant sharing and transferring of photos and movies, built-in wireless connectivity is available and helps to expedite sending imagery directly to an Android or iOS mobile device through the use of the free Canon CameraWindow app. Also helpful is the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, which serves as an intuitive interface for uploading images directly to social networking and cloud sites from the G16.

12.1MP High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 6 Image Processor
The 12.1 megapixel 1/1.7" CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor work in concert to produce high resolution still imagery and full HD video recording with notable low-light sensitivity and quality. The combination of these two technologies creates the Canon HS SYSTEM, which provides a maximum sensitivity of ISO 12800 with minimal noise and enhanced clarity to truly benefit impressive image making in dimly-lit situations. The processor also contributes to overall speed throughout the camera, including High Speed AF, Manual Focus Peaking, and a top continuous shooting rate of 12.2 fps for the first six images with a sustained shooting rate of 9.3 fps for over 500 consecutive images, as well as 1080p video recording at 60 fps.
Canon 5x Optical Zoom Lens
The built-in Canon 5x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-140mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit working in a wide array of situations. The f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low lighting at both ends of the zoom range and also contributes to producing shallow depth of field and selective focus imagery. The lens' performance is further enhanced through the inclusion of Intelligent IS image stabilization, which helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by automatically selecting from six different optimized stabilization modes depending on the specific shooting conditions. The Normal setting corrects for a wide range of movements and is ideal for still photography; the Panning setting detects when panning shots are being made and does not compensate for lateral shake; the Macro (Hybrid) setting specifically corrects for shift-type shake that is common when working with close-up subject matter; the Dynamic mode is highly effective for video work and wide-angle settings and helps to minimize common shake that occurs while walking or moving with the camera; the Powered setting is suited for shooting at the telephoto end of the zoom range when hand shake is most prevalent; and Tripod mode simply turns off the IS since it is no longer needed.
Full HD Video Recording
Full HD 1080p video recording is supported with a frame rate up to 60 fps for high resolution, fluid rendering of subjects. Direct playback is possible on an HDTV via the integrated HDMI port, with HDMI-CEC support, and 60 fps movies are saved in the Internet-friendly MP4 format for expedited online sharing and editing. When recording at 30 fps, the DIGIC 6 processor and Fine Movie Detail Processing work together to enhance noise reduction and overall clarity.
Built-In Wireless Connectivity
Built-in Wi-Fi allows direct, wireless transferring of photos and videos to mobile devices and PCs for instant online sharing to social networking sites and cloud-based storage sites. The CANON iMAGE GATEWAY helps to expedite this process through an intuitive workflow, and the free Canon CameraWindow app, available for iOS and Android devices, enables efficient transferring control and also permits GPS tagging to images. An enhanced Wi-Fi set-up also works to streamline connecting to wireless hot spots, too, as WEP Key input is no longer needed and wireless preferences can easily be modified through a web browser. Additionally, Automatic Switching via the Image Sync function works to automatically sync images with any discovered and linked PC within a designated network or, alternatively, images are temporarily sent to the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY for later transferring.
Other Camera Features
  • A large, bright 3.0" 922k-dot LCD monitor is available for live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation.
  • An optical viewfinder is integrated into the design to benefit shooting in bright conditions as well as being a more natural method for tracking moving subjects.
  • Multi aspect RAW permits shooting in a variety of aspect ratios (16:9, 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 4:5) with the uncompressed 12-bit RAW file type to more individually suit the type of image being created. RAW+JPEG shooting is also supported.
  • A hot shoe is incorporated to permit the use of an off-camera, external flash and is compatible with Canon Speedlite flashes for utilizing the intelligent E-TTL II flash metering system.
  • Built-in HDR image creation automatically records multiple frames into a single image to garner greater highlight and shadow detail with an extended range of mid-tones.
  • Sub-modes, such as Art Bold, Art Vivid, Art Standard, and Art Embossed, allow you to more precisely refine the final output and appearance of imagery in-camera.
  • Dedicated star shooting modes benefit shooting photos and movies of the night sky and work to balance the exposure settings necessary for nighttime shooting.
  • Hybrid Auto records four seconds of HD 720p video with each still image and then automatically joins the stills and movies together into a highlight reel.
  • A Dual Axis Electronic Level can be displayed on the rear LCD or in the optical viewfinder to provide a referential horizon line for consistent, parallel lines. The dual axis design shows both horizontal roll and vertical pitch to help ensure level positioning in any shooting orientation.
  • A Front Dial is incorporated into the design to allow more intuitive and accessible control over shooting settings such as aperture, shutter speed, step zoom, white balance, i-Contrast, and aspect ratio.
  • Canon's Direct Print system is supported for expedited connection and printing with a PIXMA or SELPHY directly from the camera.

I was looking for a camera that would give me good image quality without the size and bulk of my DSLR. I was also hoping for good low-light performance. I have purchased several Point & Shoot cameras and been disappointed with all. I prefer to capture in RAW mode so I can adjust the development of the image. The G16 affords me just that.
I took the camera with a group viewing the inside of an old historic building this weekend, I found at a 1x zoom I had excellent low light performance and could get an ISO of 80 in Aperture priority. However increasing to 5x quickly brought me to 3200 ISO and a noisy photo.
That is very likely a harsh and unfair judgement as the lighting was really bad and bottom line to keep a tolerable shutter speed a higher ISO was required. My friend with a Full Frame had the same experience. I did under expose the photo a few times which brought about a slow shutter speed. This required bracing the camera against a solid object to get a picture. This worked well and I got several good photos in a rather dark room without flash (not allowed) this way.
I found the View Finder difficult to use, but using the screen on back I could see the photo and all the necessary information required to create a great shot, this provided a very ergonomic picture taking experience, I would say I prefer it over my DSLR. Yes it can be done the same with my DSLR but the camera is too heavy to make it comfortable.
The image quality is easily as good as my DSLR. The f1.8 to f2.8 lens makes it a very good low light camera and an excellent outdoor camera. I intend to use it as my general walk around camera. I believe street photography may be calling me.
Overall I believe I will be using this camera as much as my DSLR.

Bought this camera as a complement to my SLR based on feature set and noticed the following:

Pros:
Practically no shutter lag
AF works well on first image and in low light
Good control over AF zones
Large aperture - good in low light
Battery lasts reasonably long
Good image quality despite moderate resolution
Intuitive UI (via screen)

Cons:
Autofocus during continuous shooting is garbage - 80% of photos taken with Continuous AF are blurry (BIGGEST issue I've seen in stark contrast with what Canon may make you believe the camera can do - admittedly G16 does not use phase contrast focusing)
Ergonomics could be better - primary issue is dial on back: registers click instead of turn half of the times
Retracted lens protected by flimsy baffles, no lens cap
Environmental sealing could be better
Can be stopped down to f/8 only (to be fair this is not bad for a P&S camera)
Some awkward limitations on setting ISO and/or aperture in portrait and HDR modes

Great camera if you don't need Continuous AF (Canon needs to improve this) and you don't get frustrated with the dial in the back. In my experience not useful for shooting series of photos of moving subjects.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

My wife and I picked up this little camera for traveling and adventures on the weekends. We use professional cameras for our day jobs but we wanted something smaller for traveling. This camera puts out RAW pro quality images packed into a very manageable camera. The camera can be for beginners or professionals. I wish it came with a wrist strap instead of a neck strap but that is very minor problem.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

Just received the G16 this week, in super fast time, great service from B&H, and it's a love affair
at first use. Currently am only using the auto mode based on an urgent need for photos. I can't wait to fully get familiar with all of the incredible features.
The video quality is also exceptional. Has a great sharp, crisp, and large view screen.
In any light situationn the color balance is spot on,
and in low light there's virtually no picture noise, simply outstanding. It's size and strap are comfortable to use and operate. One of the best cameras I've owned in over 50 years. Simply Love It!

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

As a proffesional photographer, I bought the G16 as a compact camera that would allow me to have all the manual control I like.

The fact that the lens retracts is a big space saver when fitting it into a pocket or the wifes purse.

The images are a bit noisy/grainy but that's to be expected from such a small sensor. The lens is fast though (F1.8 when wide), however, it doesn't close down past F8. The image stabilization is great, especially for video.

Another big plus for the camera is the fast x-sync of 1,2000th (although there are ways of getting partial shutter sync up to 1/4000th at half the power level)

The one thing I do expect from the G Series cameras (at their price point) is full, uncompromised manual control. While it gives you more manual control than a point and shoot, there are still things that Canon has done to partially cripple the camera. Shutter speed is limited to 1/2000th of a second unless you close down your aperture and make sure not to zoom in the whole way. Only if you close your aperture to 6.3 and zoom back can you achieve a shutter speed of 1/4000th of a second.

The camera menu and customization options are also very lacking with what you can do. Some obvoious things include turning on and off exposure simulation, manual exposure in video mode, as well as other things that seem obvious to a professioinal looking for a small everyday camera.

I had a G9 and the G16 is a big improvement. The sensor performs much better in low light with almost no noticeable noise up through ISO 800. The addition os WiFi is great too.

I bought this new camera as a back-up for my Rebel T4i. There are those occasions when you want to just grab a camera and shoot something really quick. The T4i is great but the G16 is even better for grabbing and taking that quick shot. Just turn it on, point and Shoot and you just can't beat that for those moments when a child is doing something cute or when wildlife suddenly appear and present that opportunity for a 'Quick Shot'. The G16 has lots of capabilities similar to the more expensive DSLR's but can fit right in your pants pocket when traveling or on short notice. Great camera that I would recommend to anyone novice or pro...

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

What's the best camera? There's an old photographic saying that the best camera is the one you have with you. The Canon G16 is the camera you will always have with you. Light, small, capable, it does the job superbly. What I like most is that it has traditional "feel it and move it" camera controls. It feels right in the hands. It isn't just a computer with a lens.

Lots of new features I don't really use but they would be helpful for others. Face detection would be a good example seems to work well but not for me. I like the auto focus mode that follows after you set the frame. Easier to move focus frame. Miss the manual ISO it has to be set on screen now. Like the front wheel easy to use.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I use this camera for walking around or when traveling and weight is a big concern. I have had this camera for only a few weeks, but find that the image quality is as expected. I have yet to attempt to print images captured with the G16 but I don't expect any problems given the crisp, clear images I see on my display. The ability to capture both Raw and JPEG images satisfies the desire of my wife to publish quickly and my desire to have images I can work on when at home. My walk around DSLR Lens is a 24-120 and the range on the G16 matched very nicely with that. I would have given this 5 stars had this been an extended range camera.

This camera is as expensive as a starting DSLR. I bought this because of its small footprint and having same picture quality as a DSLR. Also the GPS feature was a selling point.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I upgraded from the G9 to the G16 when I went trekking in the Everest region for three weeks earlier this month. I knew that a DSLR would be too heavy and bulky for me at high altitudes from past experience. These cameras are awesome for the photo enthusiast traveling off the beaten path. They are rugged and take fabulous photos, especially if you know the basics of photography. Compared to the G9, I love the exposure wheel on this camera as now I don't have to push a lot of buttons and waste time trying to see the LCD screen in bright light, but beware, it's now too easy to change the exposure by mistake when you put the camera away or take it out of a case. I also like the flash as it's now easy to turn it on and off by just pushing a quick button. The battery life is awesome, too. I was on the same battery all three weeks! (hint: I kept the battery in my sleeping bag at night.) The G9 would've required at least two charges in that time. What I miss, though, is the mountain/landscape mode. You can get around it by setting it on aperture or shutter speed priority and fiddling yourself, but I liked the quick dumbo setting.

I photograph all the time and have my arsenal of cameras which are SLR's and lenses. When I started in photography back in 2008, I purchased my first camera which was a G3. I am traveling overseas and did not want to carry my gear and went looking for a small camera that yields fabulous results. I highly recommend this camera. It is fantastic and just the test shots alone blew me away the first time I used it. You will be extremely happy with this camera. It is freaking AMAZING!!!!

The size of the camera is perfect for us who want to take great pictures at a moment's notice. None of the nuisance of a large camera, but all of the benefits of the quality of pictures. I haven't yet tried the wifi function. Love, love, love the camera. Quick and steady.

Very Nice camera with a bright lens and excellent macro features which allows you to get really close.
Good focusing speed and quit good automatic scene detection.
Using the wifi feature can be confusing and a bit annoying.
