The black Canon Power Shot SX170 IS Point-and-Shoot Camera is a compact point-and-shoot featuring a 16 megapixel 1/2.3" CCD sensor and DIGIC 4 image processor to produce high-resolution, well-detailed stills and HD 720p video. The processor also works to provide reduced noise levels and overall image clarity as well as power throughout the camera to enable a High Speed AF system and intelligent auto shooting modes.

The built-in Canon 16x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-448mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto lengths for shooting in nearly any environment. Aiding the long zoom reach, as well as working in low-light conditions, is the integration of an optical image stabilizer system to minimize the appearance of camera shake. Intelligent IS image stabilization is also available and features six unique stabilization modes suited to different types of shooting.

For image composition, playback, and menu navigation, a 3.0" 230k-dot LCD is available and features a wide viewing angle to support use in bright conditions. The SX170 IS also features a refined ergonomic design to increase comfort during use. For refining the look of imagery and helping to ensure precise exposure settings, Smart AUTO modes can be utilized to allow the camera to select all camera settings based on the interpreted scene at hand. Thirty-two different pre-defined shooting situations are available to cover working in a wide variety of conditions.

16MP CCD Sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor
The 16 megapixel 1/2.3" CCD sensor and DIGIC 4 image processor work together to deliver high resolution, well detailed still imagery and HD 720p video recording with stereo sound. The processor works to minimize overall noise levels and improve clarity and quality as well as provide useful speed throughout the camera, including a High Speed AF system and advanced auto functions.
Canon 16x Optical Zoom Lens
The built-in Canon 16x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-448mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit working in a wide variety of shooting environments. Benefitting this extensive zoom range is the incorporation of an Optical Image Stabilizer system, which helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake. Also available is an Intelligent IS image stabilization system that automatically selects one of six different stabilization modes to more closely match the shooting conditions. The Normal setting corrects for a wide range of movements and is ideal for still photography; the Panning setting detects when panning shots are being made and does not compensate for lateral shake; the Macro (Hybrid) setting specifically corrects for shift-type shake that is common when working with close-up subject matter; the Dynamic mode is highly effective for video work and wide-angle settings and helps to minimize common shake that occurs while walking or moving with the camera; the Powered setting is suited for shooting at the telephoto end of the zoom range when hand shake is most prevalent; and Tripod mode simply turns off the IS since it is no longer needed.
Other Camera Features
  • A large, bright 3.0" 230k-dot LCD monitor is available for live view monitoring, image review, and menu navigation.
  • Smart AUTO is an intelligent auto mode that selects from 32 pre-defined shooting situations and applies the proper camera settings to ensure accurately detailed and exposed imagery.
  • A ergonomic design allows for easier, more comfortable use and utilizes an rechargeable lithium-ion battery to reduce the overall size of the camera.
  • A dedicated movie button and electronic wind filter help to enhance video recording by making it more accessible and improving the overall quality of recordings.
  • Shooting modes: Manual, Aperture-Priority, Shutter-Priority, Program, Live View Control, Smart AUTO, Portrait, Face Self-Timer, Low Light, Snow, Fireworks, Creative Filters, Discreet Mode, and Movie.

The Canon SX170is has a lot of handy features, seems to be sturdy, is easy to use, and will be good for the applications that most people need. I don't agree with some reviews stating that it is heavy or bulky. To the contrary, it seems reasonably compact and light weight. I would give it a "4" out of 5, were it not for the fact that it can't meet the primary needs for which I bought it; namely, to take closeup shots of nature subjects in field settings. To its credit, it does have full manual exposure and white balance compensation. However, it claims to have manual focus, which it doesn't; that is, not true manual focus. Though its manual focus capabilities are much more sophisticated than those of earlier point-and-shoot cameras, they are still not quite good enough. They provide a distance scale that shows approximately how far the subject is from the camera. And, you can also manually set the aperture to increase or decrease depth of field, and depress the shutter button half way to make it try to focus. BUT - the camera decides when and how the subject is supposed to be focused, not the photographer. Many plant subjects have significant depth of field, and I need the ability to determine exactly where, within the area of the subject, I will force the focus. In field settings with bright ambient light you can't determine whether the subject is really sharply focused because the screen can't be viewed clearly. (This may not be as big a problem for indoors shooting.) So, consistently getting a sharp focus on the elements in your composition, when and where you want the focus, is a hit or miss proposition. In testing, I was getting about half my shots in focus. I can't afford the time to do these images only to find that many are blurry. They also give you a "magnifier", which is a square area in the middle of the frame, that is supposed to let you determine when focus is correct, but because of the ambient light, it doesn't really help, and in fact probably makes things worse. For the most part, getting a nice, blurry background when the lens is an inch away from the subject, and the lens effectively providing a near fish-eye view, isn't a possibility. In short, you can't control critical aspects of your composition. Despite all of this, I may have been tempted to keep the SX170, just because it's light weight and compact, for times when I don't want to tote around 25 lbs of gear, were it not for one more deficiency - something even more critical. That is, the image quality stinks. The jpeg images are very soft and "fuzzy" (lossy) when enlarged to full pixels. They literally fall apart. That's one thing I just won't tolerate. Unfortunately, Canon doesn't enable this camera to produce images in a "raw" format. I tested this matter at both ISO100 and ISO400, and at the largest image size and the size below that. Very little difference in image quality. SO, if you need an SLR camera, open your wallet and pay for it.

Comments about Power Shot SX170 IS Point-and-Shoot Camera (Red):

Camera used for casual shooting. It performs very well. Good color, sharp, IS works fairly well when zoomed in close. Movie mode the same. Very satisfied with the results. Not the best in extremely low light, but some of the low light stuff worked good. Also impressed with some of the odd light situations. Got this for the wife. I use a Canon 70D and I was very impressed with this little camera.

Comments about Power Shot SX170 IS Point-and-Shoot Camera (Black):

As a photographer sometimes it's nice not to lug all the gear around. I wanted a small point and shoot for fun. This camera read like it would be the perfect companion. It was easy to learn the controls. I am however very disappointed in the quality of the shots. I have yet to get a sharp picture. The macro setting is too cumberson and slow. Not happy with the camera for the price.

Bought this as a kick around disposable p&s. For the price point you can't beat it. It has a nice handgrip for a small camera and best of all it uses lithium batteries not the AA type that are awful.

Image stabilization is nice as well as the built in flash. The only downside is no hot shoe

The viewfinder could be a lot better quality. And I wish the video was 1080 instead of just 720. Good enough for my non-techie mother though. Carry on!

Comments about Power Shot SX170 IS Point-and-Shoot Camera (Black):

While the camera is not as functional as my Canon DSLR, the SX170 has many of the features and modes of the DSLR; even some features and modes I wouldn't expect in a "point and shoot" camera. It's a great "grab 'n go" camera at great price.

Our dog, a collie puppy is definitely a moving target. I have gotten the best still pictures of him than could have been expected. It's like he's on a zip line, never knowing which way he'll move.
The camera, and I give all credit to the camera, takes gorgeous outdoor pictures as well. The snow is not a glare. (Wish it was gone) I can't wait for the spring and summer pictures to take in the flowers and beauty God gave us. Love the camera.

despite it was smaller than I supossed, as seen in the page, it is really acurate to take very good photos, it´s easy, and really friendly the menu. Fantastic zoom, which sorprise me a lot. what is not very easy is the flash. but, still, i recomend it. it´s simply, price and quality.

This is a gift for my parents. they are not too tech savvy. The required a decent camera with good zoom. sx170is fits the bill perfectly. Loved the picture quality. It is small, easy to carry. The resolution of screen is grainy which is a downer. It has CCD sensor not the best in low light. But for daily use, its hard to beat at this price.
