The Sony Alpha a3000 Digital Camera features the form-factor and familiar shape of an SLR within a highly compact and lightweight design. Its ergonomic grip, electronic viewfinder, and Multi Interface shoe offer a wealth of support for intuitive operation and stability while shooting. The a3000 utilizes a 20.1 megapixel APS-C-sized Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ image processor to produce high resolution still images and full HD 1080i/p video in multiple frame rates with marked low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 16000. The image processor also contributes greatly to minimizing overall noise levels and allowing for full-resolution continuous shooting up to 3.5 fps.

The Tru-Finder QVGA 0.5" electronic viewfinder is an intuitive means for eye-level monitoring and is assisted by the inclusion of a 3.0" 230.4k-dot LCD monitor for image composition and menu navigation. The two technologies provide an efficiently way of working with the a3000 and facilitate working with an intuitive menu structure to access a host of camera features, including Picture Effects, Auto HDR mode, Auto Object Framing, and Sweep Panorama.

Included with the camera body is a Sony E-mount 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Standard Zoom Lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27-82.5mm. This range of perspectives is well-suited to everyday shooting and is further enhanced through the inclusion of Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for minimizing the appearance of camera shake. An internal focusing mechanism drives the lens in a smooth and near-silent manner and the inclusion of three aspherical elements helps to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range as well as contribute to high overall sharpness.

20.1MP Exmor APS HD CMOS Sensor and BIONZ Image Processor
The 20.1MP APS-C-sized Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ image processor work together to produce high resolution, well-detailed imagery with minimal noise and notable low-light quality and sensitivity from ISO 100-16000. The adaptive noise reduction technology is the same that is used in Sony's flagship DSLR, which works to intelligently reduce noise at higher sensitivities. The processor also contributes to providing a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including quick autofocus in live view, top full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 3.5 fps, and full HD 1080i/p video recording in multiple frame rates.
Lightweight Design and SLR Form-Factor
A large, ergonomic grip is integrated into the compact overall form-factor of the body, giving an appearance that resembles a traditional SLR but with a smaller, lighter weight design reminiscent of mirrorless cameras. This added grip works to increase shooting and carrying stability and security. The design of the a3000 also incorporates both a 3.0" 230.4k-dot rear LCD monitor and a Tru-Finder electronic eye-level viewfinder. The 0.5" EVF features a QVGA resolution and 100% frame coverage in addition to serving as a third point of contact between yourself and the camera for greater shooting stability. Additionally, a Multi Interface accessory shoe is available for attaching an external flash, microphone, or other accessories. A Multi Terminal is available, too, for using an optional remote control.
Full HD Video Recording
Full HD 1080i/p video recording is supported at both 60 and 24 fps frame rates to produce high resolution movies with a smooth, cinematic look. Videos are recorded using the high-quality AVCHD codec and a built-in stereo microphone records sound in the Dolby Digital AC-3 format. Additionally, 1440 x 1080p and 640 x 480p at 30 fps formats are also supported in the Internet-friendly MP4 format.
Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Standard Zoom Lens
The included 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Standard Zoom Lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27-82.5mm, covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives to suit shooting in a wide variety of situations. It features Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to help minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps to greatly benefit working in low-light conditions and with greater zoom magnifications. Three aspherical elements are integrated into the optical construction to help reduce chromatic aberrations as well as increase clarity and contrast and an internal focusing mechanism works to provide smooth, responsive AF that pairs well with HD video recording.
Other Camera Features
  • Auto Object Framing is an intelligent shooting mode that can automatically analyze the scene and subjects within it and determine an aesthetically-pleasing composition. The subsequent imagery will be cropped according to subject matter, resulting in a well-balanced composition that utilizes Face Detection and Tracking Focus to ensure high image quality and sharpness.
  • Auto HDR mode will automatically record a bracketed range of exposures of the same scene in order to capture greater highlight and shadow detail than a single exposure can record. These multiple exposures will then be composited into a single file that exhibits an extended dynamic range.
  • Face Detection/Registration technology can detect and register up to eight individual faces and adjust the focus, exposure, white balance, and flash settings in order to deliver optimal image settings for pictures of people. Children or adults can be prioritized within this mode.
  • Picture Effect modes allow you to apply creative settings and emphasize certain facets of individual images for a richer, more aesthetic picture quality. Posterization (Color/B&W), Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color (R/G/B/Y), High Contrast Mono, Toy Camera, Soft High-Key, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-Tone Mono, and Miniature modes are available.
  • Clear Image Zoom can be used to magnify the center of scenes by 2x to effectively extend the reach of any focal length lens. This digital zoom technology uses an intelligent interpolation process to minimize the amount of image degradation in order to produce realistic, high-quality images.
  • Creative Style settings provide control over how the camera processes images based on six different predetermined styles: Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset, and B&W. Within these settings, contrast, saturation, and sharpness can also be adjusted depending on personal preference.
  • Sweep Panorama technology allows you to automatically capture wide, expansive panoramic images, up to 202°, by simply panning about the scene. Images can be made in either vertical or horizontal orientation and the camera will intelligently stitch together the consecutive images into one file up to 23MP in size.
  • Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) works to improve images featuring backlit subjects or scenes with high contrast where details can be lost in the shadows or highlights. This mode can be controlled automatically or fine-tuned using five settings.
  • The Photo Creativity Touch Interface provides a wealth of controls for modifying the look of imagery in-camera. Changes can be made using the intuitive control dial and results are seen in real time on the LCD monitor. Background Defocus, Brightness, Color, Vividness, and most Picture Effects can be manipulated in this manner.
  • The Sony E-mount affords compatibility with an extensive number of lenses and lens adapters.
  • Convenient USB charging allows you to charge the included lithium-ion battery in-camera via USB connection from either an AC outlet or PC source.
  • The Stamina battery power allows up to approximately 470 shots to be taken on a single charge. The InfoLITHIUM batteries also enable you to see the remaining percentage of battery power left.
  • TRILUMINOS Color support is afforded by the a3000 to produce rich, natural colors when imagery is viewed on a TRILUMINOS Display.

Comments about Sony Alpha a3000 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens:

Image quality is very good and the kit lens is pretty good. Nice way to get a start into the Sony e-mount lenses. Sony sensors are really good. LCD and EVF are adequate for framing and focusing (focus peaking feature and zoom for manual focus really help). Autofocus is good in normal and bright lighting.Don't think you can find anything else that comes close to IQ in this price range. Menu/navigation may have a learning curve for some, but once used for a month, navigation is easy.

Comments about Sony Alpha a3000 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens:

Sony makes the best digital sensors these days and they go into Nikon, Pentax, Olympus; from medium format to smart phones. The a3000 is the cheapest way to access the most important electronic part of a digital camera - the sensor- in a size much, much bigger than the sensors found in point and shoot cameras and phones. The a3000 is entry-level and does not have the bells and whistles of more expensive cameras but it takes the best pictures by far of any camera at the three hundred price point today due to its 20mp apsc size Sony sensor. The kit lens is excellent for the price and if you spend a bit more for a Zeiss Sony lens like the 16-70, or the 24/1.8, you get the same image quality as a fifteen hundred camera from 3 years ago. Best camera value of 2013-2014!

Comments about Sony Alpha a3000 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens:

I am a simple point and shoot kind of person (canon 90) and wanted a new camera with better zoom for <$ for a trip to Alaska. Spoke with customer service and they walked thru the features of several cameras. I selected this one after reading every review I could find. I also purchased the second lens which I used that the entire time.I have mixed feelings. Most of the pictures I took are amazing (close to 2,000 and 90% are landscapes) and I've gotten really good feedback on the pictures I shared on line. Should add that I left setting on the intelligent focus plus and only played around with the defocus background option. The battery was decent, usually lasting for close to 400 shots. The biggest negative for me is that it took a long time to focus and I missed alot of good shots. It rained alot in Alaska and I continued to take pictures in rain. After awhile I got the message that the accessory wasn't compatible with camera and it stopped working. I let it sit and but it came back. (Others on boat were having similar problems.) I was disappointed also that I didn't have the zoom I needed to get the best shot of wildlife. My friend had a 50X focus that took great zoom shots, but not so great on the landscape shots. Other than the time it took the camera to focus, my negatives are really because I'm an amateur and don't have the right equipment for the shots I was trying to take (waterproof, extended zoom, and wide angle (?) (the lens that lets you capture an entire mountain range). The camera didn't do everything I needed it to do, but I don't think there is one out there that would. I'm laughing at myself as I reread this--thinking back to the equipment I saw people in AK haul around--multiple cameras and lenses with zooms at least two feet long.

Comments about Sony Alpha a3000 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens:

I bought this in Jinotega, NI, for about what it would have cost me to import it from the US. It's available world wide and is a great introduction to better photography with interchangeable lenses and a larger image file. I've used mine with Sony 16mm f/2.8, the kit zoom (18-55mm) that came with it, and with the Sony 35mm f/1.8 and the Zeiss/Sony 24mm f/1.8.

The interface is a bit unintuitive compared to the one on the A6000 and the camera doesn't have video out or IR triggering. No WiFi, no tilting touch screen, but it's an inexpensive entry to the Sony e-mount system that takes very good pictures.

My copy of the 18-55mm lens was better than advertised and had the firmware for the A6000 already installed. It's a nice second body for people who upgrade to the NEX 7 or the A6000.

It feels like a smaller camera wearing a plastic disguise -- quite light for its bulk. Also, for those using tripods, the Arcratech generic cork bottomed plate fits and leaves full access to battery and SD card doors.

Comments about Sony Alpha a3000 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens:

I'm the person Sony wanted to attract with this camera. Having the versatility of interchangeable lenses and a "full size" feel and functionality of an DSLR without the extra cost was a factor in choosing this product. I wanted a camera with a viewfinder as I often take photos in bright sunlight and wanted to step up from Point and Shoot and Smartphone limitations on my creativity. I'm still working through all the various menu options and trying as many manual settings as possible. AF selection can be a bit challenging on the fly in sports but it is likely more my issues than the cameras. The only thing I have struggled with is the auto shutoff which has turned off the camera at the most inopportune times. I need to research the settings to help avoid this in the future, but it takes a while for the camera to "boot up" again and I've missed a few shots when that happens.Comfort and feel is very good. The camera fits well in my hand. I also bought the 55-215 lens which functions well.

This camera is bashed on YouTube for being "cheap." Low cost, but what is not sacrificed is image quality. Amazing quality. I love this camera and when combined with the the LA-EA2 adapter the possibilities are endless. Next up for me - a Metabones adapter - Canon EF to Sony E Mount. You get a lot of a little - buy this camera!

Comments about Sony Alpha a3000 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens:

I am on my fifth sony dslr. I am going to start with the negatives. There is no in body stabilization or ibis. This effectively negates indoor shooting for me unless using a tripod. I will leave sony if they quit making the a mount cameras. First off it is the least expensive csc out there and is more comfortable than the rebel series. The hand fits easily on the sony grip and I need a vertical grip on the rebel or my last two fingers do not rest on the grip on the rebel. As their are no mirrorless cameras with ibis and either a crop sensor or full frame this is not a feature worth mentioning but my unhappiness with sony is strong for having introduced new mounts so early. For the camera. I have shot professionally but my friend Bob Padgett who was a reuters photojournalist shooting pro sports in Charlotte said of the kit lens that it is probably a zeiss design. It is slow at 3.5-5.6 but is extremely sharp and functional in many situations. I bought this camera as I wanted to shoot all of my manual focus with glassless adaptors. You would not shoot sports or action with this camera as it is only around 3fps. It is nice that the iso button is on the wheel so is always easy to set. The pictures are outstanding and for a csc the function layout is easy.Yes the fake shutter sound is corny but I care about use. It is a very simple camera that takes very nice pictures. Thanks Sony

I purchased this after having owned a Sony NEX 7 for almost a year. I also read the reviews. The reviewers seem disappointed about the viewing screen. But let's get serious. Does anyone really rely on the view screen? Other than determining framing and focus, the view screen is meaningless. When you get home and review your images, you always see more. For the price of a better point and shoot camera you get a camera with a huge sensor and the ability to change lenses. I mean really. what more do you want or expect for $[$]or less.

I purchased this camera willingly, despite all of the "bad press" it was recieving. Let me tell you something. Don't listen to them.. This camera is just as good as any other.. Probably better in many cases. Ease of use for one. Most importantly "image quality". I don't know about anyone else but I usually purchase camera's for one reason.. Taking pictures and this camera does an absolute wonderful job. Let's just say that I've never been able to leave the auto ISO set to auto on any camera before. I do on this one because of its excellent low light capabilities.

I love this Sony Camera. It takes wonderful pictures. The price was great also. And it was exactly what i was looking for.
The pictures are very clear and beautifully taken. It was easy to learn and has many different functions i was looking for.
I have no complaints at all about the camera and would recommend it to anyone.

We needed a new video camera to take on vacation and we were close to replacing our old point and shoot still camera, so I stated looking into these type combo cameras to replace both in one shot. I have had Sony products all my life and have never had any major issues so after pricing and reviewing, the best value out there was this A3000. I could even use my old manual SLR camera lenses. We just got back from D.C. and NYC and the camera worked out great! Took stunning day and night photos and AMAZING HD 1080 videos. It was wonderful not carrying around 2 cameras and having to switch back and forth. You can switch instantly between the modes. Not a professional's camera, but makes you look like one.

I bought this camera a week ago , and have used it almost daily. This camera takes wonderful pictures. Until now I have only used a point and shoot camera, and I wanted better quality photos. The camera is very easy to use, and within a short period of time i was able to figure out all the settings without looking through the users guide. Wonderful Camera.

I can't agree with all the criticism I read about this camera. The EVF is not the best but is certainly adequate and the screen is equal to the SLR's I already own. The image quality is excellent, the menus are easy to navigate I was able do all I wanted without having to refer to the manual. The kit lens is very sharp and I used some legacy lenses and the exposures and color were very satisfactory

Comments about Sony Alpha a3000 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens:

I have read a lot of reviews about this camera before buying it. Most of them are not great! Why? Because most people are expecting too much. This camera is below $ and it takes awesome pictures. If you want an SLR, then get one. Do not compare it with this camera. The bottom line is this takes really great pictures! ;)

After a week and a few quick pictures, it does what it was supposed to do. A big sensor that makes the difference with sup erzoom HX product range in a nice body.

This is a good way to introduce someone to SLR photography. The camera takes great images. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn how to shoot off from auto modes.
