These drives are designed for the small storage arrays most commonly used in homes and small businesses. They are intended to consume less power and dissipate less heat than "performance" drives, and to have better longevity in a 24x7 environment, but at a lower price than the industrial-grade ("enterprise") drives used in larger storage arrays typically deployed in a machine-room environment.

The power and heat savings apparently are achieved by running the spindles at a relatively low speed. Western Digital doesn't publish the specs (at least, I couldn't find them), but it's likely they spin at or slightly above 5400 rpm—like the disks typically installed in laptops—and below the 7200 rpm or faster drives that are intended to pump out data as quickly as possible.

The longevity claims reportedly are based on the fact that the drives don't park the heads, which is desirable in any 24x7 environment, and some form of vibration dampening similer (if perhsps not quite as aggressive) to that found in industrial-grade drives.

The drives certainly run quiet—no doubt because of the low spindle speed and perhaps because of the vibration dampening. I'm using several of these in a 5-bay consumer-grade network-attached storage array, and while I haven't done any rigorous performance testing, I don't think the higher rotational latency is costing me much, if anything, in reduced performance; in an NAS environment, other factors are more likely to dominate performance than how fast the disks are spinning.

I've only had these installed for a couple of weeks and can't comment on how well they will stand up over time, but they carry a three-year warranty and the features that are supposed to make these drives particularly suitable for 24x7 use definitely make sense.

Comments about 4TB WD Red SATA 3.5" Internal HDD (WD40EFRX):

Photographers no longer buy film, they buy hard drives. I've been using WD as my preferred drive for over 4 years, with over 50 deployed in that time. WD drives are consistently rated as quality drives in studies like the one Blackblaze has done. Their longevity numbers line up with my experience. All drives die, and even some new drives die. That's why you need a good RAID for fault tolerant storage. Expect that drives will fail, and keep a couple spares on hand so you can rebuild your RAID quickly. And don't forget a backup. RAID is not a backup. Three copies is the best practice, with offsite storage. I "retire" my old drives from my RAID at about 24,000 hours usage, and then use them for backup where they are rarely used. Rotating your drives as they age helps head off problems.

I use these drives for data storage, mirrored with windows storage spaces.

Been using them for over a year now, with no failures or SMART warnings.

They are whisper quiet, and do not get hot inside of my computer case.

Not the fastest drives out there, but shouldn't be an issue in a multi-disk array.
                          Reasonably quiet and low vibration.
Only time will tell how they will hold up in my external RAID enclosure.

I bought two of these for use in a NAS using RAID 1. They installed and the NAS created a volume without any issues. They are quiet are running cool even during the initial transfer of data (1.5 TB via esata). They have been spinning for a week now without issue.

I have 7 of these drives in 2 Synology NAS Servers and they are all performing flawlessly. I prefer Red over the WD SE or RE Enterprise drives because the drive sleep feature is nice for home use. Why have a drive spinning 24/7 when you only use it 5 or 6 hours a week. For home or SMB Red is the way to go. Highly recommended.

Comments about 4TB WD Red SATA 3.5" Internal HDD (WD40EFRX):

Never before have I bought a HDD that was slower than the one it was replacing.

These WD 4TB Red drives are indeed slower than Seagate's 5900RPM 3TB drives for sequential reading and writing. Write speed is 10-20% slower. However, they are significant better than the Seagate drive for Random IO and small files, as much as 30-50% better for some file sizes.

So, if you're planning on a single HDD as your OS/Programs and everything else, the WD Red is the best choice. If you have a SSD for your OS/Programs/Swap and just need a large drive for huge video, image, audio, or games then the Seagate may be the better option.

I had read reviews and knew the sequential read/write wasn't impressive, I was drawn to the drive as it draws less power (runs cooler) than the Seagate, and is 2dB quieter - the main benefit in my perspective. Having said that, my case fan is far louder than either drive, so perhaps this was irrelevant.

It was also ~$30 more than the Seagate 4TB, so I'm now second guessing my decision on this occasion.

Well, a review about HDD should probably be written after running them for a couple of years, but I put a pair of these in RAID 0, and I'm getting 230MB/s and 8TB of space. Pretty awesome if you ask me! Perfect for archival and ingest. I do editing on Intel SSD in a RAID 0 config, so speed isn't gonna compare - but 8TB for under $500 - awesome!
