Comments about Brother ADS-1500w Wireless Document Scanner:

Chose this Document Scanner because it is the lowest price unit that includes Wi-Fi and the ability to connect a USB thumb drive. Most of the units at this price point are tethered to a computer via USB, while the Brother can be connected that way, it is not required. This allowed me to put the scanner out of the way with my paper shredder. Scan the doc, then shred.Scan quality is very good, and when de-skew and blank page skip are turned off, it is pretty quick. Turn those functions on, and it slows down- a lot. But from testing Epson, Fujitsu and Neat competitors, it's not that much different. Being able to email resulting files is very nice (the unit stores the pop/smtp information for an account internally). You can connect to DropBox, OneDrive, GoogleDrive and other services to post as well, but the results pass through a Brother-operated API site which could be hacked or shutdown without warning. Those that know about FTP can also post files to ftp accounts (more on this later). Overall, the Brother scanner offers more ways of saving your files than I've seen from competitors. What's not good. The Manual. Brother has never been good at documentation, and this is no different. It's poorly written and scattered in presentation. There is also very little instruction and actually how to get some things to work. Specifically, the card scanner which has almost zero documentation. I was finally able to get it to scan to an ftp account, but it can't email. Also, the Brother manual's description of "network" for scanning is so poor it should be thrown in the trash. Also, the paper feed is questionable at times, you have to watch it carefully or it pulls 2 pages at once. A document collector would be nice as well instead of the pages flinging themselves all over after scanner. The MAIN PROBLEM (big capitals required) is that if you power this unit off, it can't reconnect to your Wi-Fi until you've reprogrammed it. THAT is an ridiculous flaw on the part of Brother. Now, on to my buying experience. There is a reason I shop with B&H, and this was a good example. I placed my order and then found out it was out-of-stock (didn't say that when I placed the order). Okay, I can wait since the unit is on sale. Didn't hear a peep for 2 weeks when B&H said they were still backordered and would ship once received. I was offered the chance to cancel my order at that point (I didn't). Another 2 weeks and the unit finally ships and I receive it. But now B&H has it on sale for $10 less than I paid. One email to customer service and I received the $10 credit. That is why I shop B&H.

Comments about Brother ADS-1500w Wireless Document Scanner:

We purchased this unit to move totally into paperless home records. For a year I had been using my MFP to scan documents (pain) for an elderly relative that we are caretaker for, and finally decided to move the whole family over using a dedicated document scanner. The Brother unit is not the fastest out there, nor is it the smallest; but it has fully functional (if weak) wireless capability and a functional USB 2.0 port for connecting a thumb drive up to 64gb (FAT32/exFAT formatting). You can directly connect it to a computer with a different USB port. The Brother unit can also store an email account configuration which allows you to email scanned documents. Brother offers a bridge to allow you to post to cloud drive services as well. This seems to depend on Brother's service remaining reliable, so take that with a grain of salt. FTP is also supported. The USB port give this a leg up connection-wise to most document scanners I've looked at. The Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i which is a direct competitor lacks wireless connectivity and USB functionality- it must be connected to a computer and retails for the same price. Now, the negatives. The wireless radio on this unit appears to be very weak and doesn't maintain connections well. Expect to re-enter your network information any time you power the unit down. There is also no catch tray for scanned documents, so they go flying as I have the unit sitting on top of a 5 drawer filing cabinet. The input guides are also rather flimsy, so documents get skewed easily if you aren't careful and grabbing multiple pages (messing up the scans) is common if you aren't paying attention. The internal deskew seems to be always turned off when you setup shortcuts, which is just poor programming on Brother's part. Also, when using a short cut to scan a job (example, scan double sided, delete blank pages, color 300dpi PDF and then email) you first select the short cut, which loads, then you confirm what the shortcut is going to do, THEN you start the job. That's the same number of clicks as just selecting email from the menu.I do not use any of the Brother-supplied Value-Added Software, so I cannot supply a review for those items. I will point out that the Mac software is very un-mac when I did fiddle with it.My final comment will be about B&H. I placed my order on January 15th and heard nothing. 2 weeks passed and they sent an email stating they still hadn't gotten the unit in stock, but would ship when it was received (I was also given the option to cancel my order.) The unit finally shipped and was received February 20th, but I had noticed that B&H had discounted the price by another $ from my original order date. One email to B&H Customer Service (after they had closed for the day) and the next day I had an email from Israel confirming a $ credit back. THAT is why I make my electronic purchases from B&H even with them being on the opposite coast.
