Here is a copy time comparison between this reader and my old Lexar Firewire 400 reader. Copy was made from a Lexar UDMA 7 1000X CF card to a 1.7 Ghz i7 MacBook Air. Copied file was a 12.65 Gb folder containing jpg and raw files.

    - Lexar USB 3.0 Reader: 1:46
    - Lexar Firewire Reader using Thunderbolt adapter: 13:43

    Impressive!

Unfortunately, this reader is very bulky especially when compared with my old Lexar FW reader. All that extra plastic is unnecessary. I'd be reluctant to carry this in my camera+laptop bag if I was looking to travel light.

We bought a couple of these to do faster uploads. The problem is that when we plug two of them directly into the computer, then insert 2 cards to do an upload, they totally crash the computer (MacPro OSX Mavericks), requiring a hard restart. Talked to Lexar, they have no clue what's going on either and were not overly helpful. Ironically we hadn't bought Lexar products in a few years as the only CF cards we ever had go corrupt were Lexar Brand too. If you are using these card readers one at a time they seem okay but would you want to trust your shoot data to unreliable technology?

Comments about Lexar Professional Workflow CFR1 Card Reader for CompactFlash Cards:

These card readers have read many different brands and capacity cards flawlessly. Only strange thing is the USB connection jack seems to be an unusual type. No replacement USB cables for this thing laying around that's for sure.

Just plug in and away you go. Super fast transfer rate and very simple to use. Previously bought a cheaper card reader (not from B&H) and had all my images deleted when I tried to transfer them to my PC. Not with this card reader, transferred without a hitch.

It feels well built and has survived the hockey puck use by our cat without any problems. I am in the process of getting another one for my work computer given the increased speed of downloading.

The reader works, it's sturdy and it's fast. The only problem, and potentially a huge one, is the USB cable. It is not a standard cable, meaning proprietary. If the cable fails or if you lose it, and you are not near a professional camera store, you are out of luck. Not smart and not customer friendly. I would suggest always having a backup with you.

                              Heavy duty.
You stick your card in and it quickly dumps the images where you meant them to go.
I didn't buy the complete hub, only just the two card readers that I would need.

I normally connect my camera to my computer to transfer photos for work and they took forever. Using this cut the transfer time in half! Great buy.

I like this card reader. The only thing that bothers me is that it does not automatically "turn on" when I insert a card, but only reads the card when I unplug and the replug the USB cable.

I am a hobbyist photographer just getting into it. I decided to buy this to see how much faster it would be than downloading directly from my camera (EOS 30D). I was delighted by the results. I came back from a recent trip with about 270 shots, both JPG and CR2 files. The download time was probably about a minute.

Very fast! I love it! Well worth the price.

The only thing I would change is to have a shorter cable, but that is just my preference.

I've tried several card readers but never really found one I liked until this unit. The cards easily fit the first time without the need to line the card up exactly. It is quickly recognized by all of my computers and well built. Highly recommended.

Comments about Lexar Professional Workflow CFR1 Card Reader for CompactFlash Cards:

This Lexar reader works on its own as a USB 3.0 connected CompactFlash card reader, or in the Lexar 4-bay hubs (Professional Workflow HR1 (USB 3.0), HR2 (Thunderbolt). I use it with the hub as I mix CF and XQD cards from my Nikon D4.

This delivers the full speed of UDMA 7 spec cards, which moves images almost as fast as XQD cards. Using this reader with the 4-bay hub eliminates my tendency to just use XQD cards to avoid having to attach two readers to multiple ports on my laptop.

I think these individual units are overly large for their purpose, though less so for CF cards compared to SD cards, especially considering these are deep enough to protect the pins on the CF connection, which is often a weakness of many a CF reader. I get the feeling that the hub and the other readers are bulky due to the size of the CF reader in this series, which needed to be wider than the rest due to the shape of the card. If so, so be it, but I still think Lexar could have worked with the space better. It is still a solid tool however - it is rugged and solidly built.

The units have a too-bright operation light that you may find distracting - I'm considering some semi-transparent tape to reduce the intensity while still allowing it to be visible.

I also wish these units had both Thunderbolt and USB connections (they only offer USB 3.0) - they can be used in the Thunderbolt Hub that will ship soon however.
