Product Highlights
  • Adapts Nikon G Lenses to Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount

The matte black Nikon G Lens to Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount Adapter from Metabones allows you to attach a Nikon F-mount G lens to a Micro Four Thirds format camera. Metabones' adapters are precision-machined with brass and plated with chromium on both sides of the adapter. It is also designed to allow lenses to reach infinity focus while maintaining the correct registration distance required to support CRC lenses or lenses with floating elements.

This adapter features a clickless 7-stop aperture ring with half-stop markings and a detachable tripod foot compatible with Arca Swiss, Markins, and Photo cam ball head tripods. Additionally, its matte black finish minimizes internal reflections so as to maintain image quality.

To note, automatic lens functions, like autofocus, will not be retained when using this adapter.

In my experience, manual focusing on my Nikon D300s is pretty much impossible, even with a KatzEye screen installed. So I had manual focusing lenses that were going unused.

I bought a Panasonic G3 in March 2013 and was impressed by the electronic viewfinder. The view was larger and had more contrast than my D300s. I decided to try this adapter out even though it was somewhat pricey. I bought it March 2014 after using the G3 for one year exclusively with the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7.

I find that this adapter works very well with my lenses. I was going to sell the 35, 50, 100, and 135mm lenses but not anymore.

I would have to agree with another's opinion that it is hard to use stopped down. Stopping down a lens lets less light to the sensor and your electronic viewfinder will start to lag.

So it's not auto-aperture and it costs quite a bit more than others so I'll take a star off.

On the other hand, it is very well built, it makes my existing lenses very useable, and the tripod mount is great because it takes stress off the camera body (especially a tiny camera like the G3.

First please understand that the product is very well made. I have no complaints at all about that. I also understood going in that there are no electronic connections. What I hadn't realized that unless you are shooting something static on the tripod that it would be very difficult to use anything but a wide open aperture.

There are two cases where I see this as being useful. First in macro or shots of static items where you can focus wide open and then use the stop down ring to adjust the aperture. Second, shoot wide open and do manual focusing. I'm looking at trying this with some of my longer lenses for nature and sport where I'll manually focus and I want the lens wide open anyway.

One negative is to get the click feature on the f-stop you have to take it apart and change some very small pieces.

I bought this product so that I could use some Nikon lenses on the new GH-4 at work which don't have on-lens shutter adjustment. Very pleased with the adaptor, especially with its heavy-duty build. I will probably one day invest in the Speed Booster version of this, but for now I am quite happy.

Comments about Metabones Nikon G Lens to Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount Adapter (Matte Black):

One thing I noticed was that if I had the adapter set to wide open when I attached the lens, the lens wouldn't latch, just close down the aperture setting on the adapter and it attaches fine. I have access to the full range of apertures on each of my lenses and can focus to infinity (Some adapters limit the focusing). This is non-clicked, so the aperture ring move smoothly, which is great for video, which is what I'm doing, but may be annoying for stills. The adjustment ring is smooth and easy to move, but tight enough to stay put.Very high-quality build. I was concerned about attaching my 70-200mm 2.8 with an adapter since it is quite heavy, but this thing is solid. I have no concerns about durability.Another fear I had was the tripod foot on it. It does extend below the body of my gh3 making it impossible to mount a quick release plate in the long position, but the foot does come off and then the adapter is small enough to use the plates. All in all, this is a great product if you want more quality than the super cheap options out there but don't want to shell out huge dollars for the top of the line adapters.
