Questions? Ask our experts:

The Speedlite 90EX from Canon is a featherweight (1.76 oz) shoe mount flash that's ideal for the Canon mirrorless EOS M digital camera. It has a guide number of 30' and provides coverage for lenses as wide as 24mm (35mm format equivalent).

Many functions can be controlled effortlessly through the camera’s menu system, such as the AF assist beam (used to ensure accurate AF in low light situations), Canon’s amazing E-TTL II flash metering, FE lock and flash exposure compensation. Even color temperature information can be transmitted back to the camera.

A wireless master function (optical) is built-in that allows multiple flash units to be controlled for creative lighting effects. Through 4-channel optical light pulse transmission, the 90EX can control up to three groups of slave-enabled flashes, controlling power from 8:1 to 1:8 in 1/2-stop increments. It can transmit up to approximately 16.4 ft. indoors, up to 23 ft. outdoors. Best of all, the 90EX has a standard Canon hot shoe mount that makes it compatible with all Canon EOS SLR cameras.

The product comes supplied in a plain white box, instead of the manufacturer's packaging. It includes all the manufacturer's accessories.

I bought this flash to test it with other canon flashes. I was rather seduced by the size of this flash at first, but its tiny size also proved to be a lightwave champion compared to other flashes: its use is very specific; you can't bounce off the ceilings the flash nor can you move it to the left or the right, in other words, you will be limited creatively. The recycling time is around 2 or 3 seconds, and its flashing capacity is lower than the internal flash of the T2i series. On some pictures you will barely notice a difference compared to a non-flash, it's that way not highly significant, even after i made sure to change the batteries with the powercheck. If you want a better flash with a compact size, choose the Canon 270EX-II, it's by far more performing than the 90EX flash.
On a positive note, you can trigger other canon flashes with the 90EX, up to 3 flashes, but then again the flashing capacity of the 90EX won't be set to maximum either.
I tried really hard to fall in love with this flash, but we were not meant for each other. This flash will remain in a drawer until i can find a better use for this little one. Sure it was a lovely device on the Canon EOS-M but his performances did not match the design of the camera.

Great For Use As A Basic Fill Flash

Comments about Canon Speedlite 90EX (White Box):

Sure, this doesn't recharge fast enough, its reach is weak, it turns itself off in down time (thus requiring your manually turning it back on), and it doesn't rotate in any direction for alternative uses. However, for both the price range and as a simple, soft fill flash that won't dominate the shot – it's absolutely perfect. Personally speaking, I prefer to shoot in natural light – even under the harshest conditions – but sometimes a flash is necessary. The Canon 90EX, combined with the Vello Bounce Dome Diffuser I bought to use in tandem with it, does the trick for those of us who prefer a less heavy-handed flash.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 90EX (White Box):

I bought this to use strictly as a slave to trigger two 270EX II off camera flashes, so I can't comment on its use as a stand alone flash. It does do what I need it to perfectly and is a heck of a lot cheaper than buying an ST-E2.

the exposure is good, not super powerful,
The thing that is really missing, and if I were to do again would get the bounce feature.
It eliminates the shadow from the flash, and defuses the light to eliminate hot spots. Wish it had it.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 90EX (White Box):

Qualification: This pertains to the "white box" version only at the white box price. I downsized by moving to a Canon SL1 from B&H. The SL1 popup drains the camera battery, so I got this as a pocketable alternative to our 580EX flashes (that are as big as the SL1 camera.) This flash is so small and light, I can just put it on the camera when I "might" need a flash, yet not be burdened with extra weight and bulk.

Saves the camera battery, it's a bit higher than the popup, and I think it's a tiny bit more powerful. It covers with width of the Canon 24mm F2.8 with only a tiny bit of vignetting, which is easily fixed in Adobe Camera RAW.

Works with 1st or 2nd curtain sync, FEC, and will control a slave. And it fits in your pocket. As a side benefit, my wife with her 5D2 and 5DSr can borrow it when she needs an emergency flash. And at the white box price, it's hard to think of a reason to not get this little flash.

Perfect Optical Trigger for remote Canon 430 EX II flash

Comments about Canon Speedlite 90EX (White Box):

I purchased this flash to econmically trigger my EX430 II flash (My Canon 6D doesn't have the capability without a built-in flash) for some basic portrait work. I didn't want to get into RF triggers/ Pocket Wizards/ etc with my infrequent need for this. I was also looking for a small, pocketable flash to have for some "just in case" situations where I needed some fill-flash.

It works great in ETTL or manual modes! Note: As an optical trigger, the EX90 does NOT contribute lighting to the picture, it flashes ONLY to trigger the remote flash.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 90EX (White Box):

My 550D camera flash died but since I had a 430EXII, that was no big problem. My 550D internal flash could not control external flashes set as master to my 430EXII as a slave, so I needed a solution for both; for close shots the the 430EXII was overkill. The 90EX does that well to about 5m, even though it has a guide number of 9m.

I used it set as master to my slaved 430EXII and it works well. Inside my house, I can point my camera with the 90EX in the hotshoe to the subject, the 430EXII 2.0m behind me and 1.0m off to my left and trigger the 430EXII as desired.

As a main flash at its max distance, the 90EX eats batteries. As a master, not so bad. But you need to keeep extra AAA batteries on standy just incase, rechargeables or not.

Since my 550D had no master flash control and the 90EX does, I love it, I can triger my 430EXII remotely in most circumstances indoors. I need to experiment more out doors.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 90EX (White Box):

My 550D built-in flash stopped working and it also had no master control. I got this because I don't want to use my 430EXII on camera all the time and also to remotely control the 430EXII as a slave; this does the job well.

Using on camera at its max range as only a flash it is a little weak outdoors but indoors not so bad because of its bounce reinforcing the main flash from its wide 24mm head. Using at or near it max range will drain the AAA batteries quickly so keep spares/rechargables/charger handy.

Using the 90EX set as master with my 430EXII set as slave indoors the 90EX seems to have a better range than its 9 metre range would suggest due to its wide 24mm head. In some shots the 430EXII slave was 2-3 metres behind me, the subject about 4 metres in front and the 90EX in the camera hotshoe. It fired off my 430EXII slave but needed some time to recycle each time. The ETTL camera flash control worked fine.

Pretty much what I expected. Not that strong of a flash but better than nothing especially if you don't have a pop up. Ability to control two or three slave groups is what's attractive to me. For this price it's a bargain and this white box version looks and operates like new.

I generally use my 430EX II with lots of bounce, etc. and get professional results so I wasn't sure if a fixed flash would work for me. Got this for my EOS M and couldn't be more pleased. Truly a joy to use.
I can't rotate it or change the angle, but it's tiny and fits PERFECTLY within the theme of what I use the EOS M for.

This flash for the EOS M is small enough to slip into a larger pocket so you always have a flash on hand. It works quite well and is controllable by the EOS M flash menu.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 90EX (White Box):

This is a [$] replacement for a $250 master remote. And this is also a tiny emergency flash for 5D/6D. It is so light and compact that you will more likely bring it with you than any other bulky but powerful flash. As a master it is definitely powerful enough to trigger slaves indoors. I haven't tried it outdoors yet. I actually like that it uses AAA batteries since I can use rechargeable ones rather than worrying about hard to find lithium battery for ST-E2.The power of this flash is enough to take a snap shot in a dark room at a high ISO. But don't even think about using it as a fill in flash when using it as a master - its power is significantly reduced when the wireless master function is enabled (perhaps to make the batteries last much longer when it works as a master). So if you find that the power of the flash is very low - check if the master function was accidentally left enabled. It recycles super fast and I can't comment on the battery life since I haven't used it heavily. One improvement Canon could make in the future is to add an LED like the one in the new 320EX.

I purchased this flash to use on my EOS-M being it doesn't have an onboard flash. I have used it a fair amount and it seems to have a very usable amount of output especially for the size. The only mark against the flash I have is being that the flash cannot be angled it would be nice if it would come with a diffuser.
