The Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens is a wide-angle to portrait-length zoom lens that is compatible with the Micro Four Thirds system. The 12-40mm focal length provides a 35mm-equivalent field of view of 24-80mm and a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture enables consistent low-light performance and shallow depth of field control throughout the zoom range.

The lens construction integrates an array of aspherical, extra-low dispersion, high-refractive index, and HD lens elements to provide a comprehensive reduction in chromatic aberrations and distortion while also contributing to high overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity. A high-speed imager AF linear motor drive system provides fast, smooth, and quiet focusing performance and the MSC (Movie and Still Image Compatible) designation indicates this lens' suitability for use with fast-moving subjects and video applications. Additionally, a manual focus clutch enables quick, seamless shifting between auto and manual focus control.

Additionally, the lens features a dust-, freeze-, and drip-proof construction that is tailored to its use in inclement conditions.

12-40mm lens provides a 35mm-equivalent field of view of 24-80mm, covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture enables consistent low-light performance and selective focus control throughout the zoom range.
High-speed imager AF linear motor drive system, with MSC (Movie and Still Image Compatible) support, provides fast, smooth, and quiet focusing performance.
Manual focus clutch permits efficient and intuitive switching between auto and manual focusing control.
The lens construction integrates one aspherical ED (extra-low dispersion) element, two aspherical elements, one DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) element, two extra-low dispersion elements, one HD element, and two HR (high-refractive index) elements into its design to minimize aberrations, distortion, and color fringing throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness, clarity, and fidelity.
Seven-blade circular diaphragm works to produce an aesthetic out-of-focus quality that is well-suited to shallow depth of field imagery.
Dust-, freeze-, and drip-proof design ensure the lens' performance in inclement and harsh conditions.

I purchased the M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens along with the OM-D E-M1 from B&H a while back to replace/update from my Nikon D80. At the time of my purchase, the OM-D E-M1 does not come with a kit lens. I decided on this lens because I think it's a most flexible and quality lens to begin the switch from DSLR to mirrorless. After shooting with it for a while, I am extremely happy with the decision.
The Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO is the equivalent of a 24-70mm f/2.8 full frame (24-80mm to be exact). It probably has the biggest diameter of all the M. Zuiko lenses. It looks quite impressive and professional with the E-M1. The built is quality and solid. The lens hood DOES come with the lens and it is reversible. If you carry your camera with a BlackRapid type of a strap (i.e. to your side), be careful to keep the lens hood release button away from your side to avoid accidently releasing the hood. The lens does not have IS but it's OK for me since my E-M1 does have 5-axis stabilization.
The zoom range and the wide angle on the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO are very user friendly. It allows you to take pictures at different distances and angles without you have to move around all the time to fit the subject into the frame because sometimes you don't have that option. The f/2.8 aperture means that the focus is very fast and it can handle the indoor photography very well. The only time that I have problem with indoor photography using this lens was taking picture of people dancing at a wedding reception. People were moving fast and the room was quite dim. Overall, the pictures are very sharp unless you compare them to the M. Zuiko 75mm f/1.8, which is ridiculously sharp and fast. I recently wrote a review on the 75mm f/1.8 and I gave it a four-star, instead of the five-star that I'm giving the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO. I really believe that the 12-40mm f/2.8 would give you the BEST bang for your buck because it is so flexible. Other lens could be sharper and faster but they are limited to a certain shooting occasion. The 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO can handle all of the occasions that you encounter with a high degree of success. It will end up staying on your camera all the time. It is a little pricey but it is worth it. You will NOT disappointed with this lens. I would HIGHLY recommend this lens to be the FIRST lens in everybody MFT lens collection.

Inconsistent auto focusing. Relatively reliable AF can only be achieved at 35mm. Sent my copy to service center for repair and did not see a whole not improvement. Manual focusing seems to be similar: it is hard to reach a perfect spot at 25mm and so on, but it is relatively easy to get in focus at 35mm manually. With such a price paid, I am very disappointed.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

I am so glad I spurged and bought this lens with my E-M1. In nearly 2 months, it has not been off the camera. This lens is easily as good or better than my Canon L glass. The lens is extremely well built and weather sealed (as is the E-M1). The zoom ring is buttery smooth, yet has enough drag that there's no chance of zoom creep. The focus ring is also smooth. Olympus has incorporated a clever and very convenient method of manual focus. just put the focus ring back, a distance scale is exposed, and the camera/lens is in manual focus mode. One draw-back to this: If you forget and leave the ring in the manual facus position, you might think the camera's auto focus is broken. Dumb, I know, but it has happened to me and others. The front of the lens does extend as it is zoomed, but not by much. The included lens hood snaps on with two lugs on either side. I've heard others say that the hood was prone to falling off, but I've not had that problem. The lens cap is solidly made and snaps into the front of the lens by squeezing the two lugs in the front face. Sometimes I've had a little trouble getting the lens cap to seat properly. The lens also has a lens function button, but I've not found a good use for it yet.By comparison, I have the Canon 17-40 L lens which covers about the same zoom range, although they are for different cameras. While the 12-40 f2.8 Pro lens is a bit more expensive, it is smaller, lighter, faster by 1 stop, and it focuses closer and faster. Another example: the full-frame Canon 24-70 f2.8 L lens has about the same field of view as the 12-40 f2.8 Pro. The latter is about half the size and weight, about half the price and every bit as good as the former. So even though the Oly lens seems expensive, it really isn't when you compare it with similar lenses in other formats.Autofocus is very fast, and it is tack sharp, even at f2.8. I'm sure it is even better stopped down, but so far the most I've stopped down was about f3.5. It is easily as sharp as my 45 f1.8, which used to be my go-to low light lens, but not any more. If you have decided to purchase the spectacular E-M1, you need this lens to go with it.

I am an enthusiast and own the OMD EM 5 along with Nikon 610 and Pentax K3. The OMD EM 5 is my favorite for travel. This Lens is super fast, super sharp and super silent. Tough build and excellent quality. It sure deserves the Pro designation. I have the F2.8 Nikon Zooms and the F1.4 Nikon Primes...this Lens is not any less on quality. If anything it might be better on usability and functionality, be it the weather resistant aspect of it or the fraction of the weight compared to the full frames I own. Outside a studio, this one is the winner.

I was worried about switching to a mirrorless camera system, that, as a very picky, semi pro, I'd be disappointed with image quality. I am thrilled with the quality of this lens and matched with my OMD-EM1 it is a great package. Being weather sealed along with my camera, it was a joy shooting out in a light rain. The lens is light yet rock solid and feels good in my hands. The manual focusing is quite smooth and spot on. The 12-40 zoom is equivalent to a 24-80 FF zoom, perfect for my needs. I love this lens.

It feels great, zoom and focus rings are a delight. Took some sunset shots recently, including one with the sun above the horizon. No flare! I am impressed.

This is a must lens in my opinion. I have saved money on the lenses in the past and you really get what you pay. Pictures are sharp and on top of that it is splash and dust proved

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

I used this lens and an EM1 body to shoot a wedding last weekend in Brooklyn. I carried a back up body and longer lens just in case but found myself able to shoot great portraits, group shots, indoor reception pictures and even several close ups of details all with one lens. The pictures are tack sharp and the brightness was a plus in a dim room.

This lens is sharp at all f-stops, it's fast throughout the zoom range and it's very well made. I really like the way you can put it in MF/AF by sliding the focus ring back and forth. Even the lens shade is easy to put on and take off. It's weather resistant and that's my only beef with it. The o-ring at the lens mount makes it a minor struggle to twist the lens on/off. There's no good place to grab the lens to do that. Focus is fast and silent.

This is my first MFT lens for the Panasonic GH4, and fits all my needs for video making. I appreciate the overall quality, metal everywhere, secured cap, and great image quality as well.
