The Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens is a wide-angle to portrait-length zoom lens that is compatible with the Micro Four Thirds system. The 12-40mm focal length provides a 35mm-equivalent field of view of 24-80mm and a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture enables consistent low-light performance and shallow depth of field control throughout the zoom range.

The lens construction integrates an array of aspherical, extra-low dispersion, high-refractive index, and HD lens elements to provide a comprehensive reduction in chromatic aberrations and distortion while also contributing to high overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity. A high-speed imager AF linear motor drive system provides fast, smooth, and quiet focusing performance and the MSC (Movie and Still Image Compatible) designation indicates this lens' suitability for use with fast-moving subjects and video applications. Additionally, a manual focus clutch enables quick, seamless shifting between auto and manual focus control.

Additionally, the lens features a dust-, freeze-, and drip-proof construction that is tailored to its use in inclement conditions.

12-40mm lens provides a 35mm-equivalent field of view of 24-80mm, covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture enables consistent low-light performance and selective focus control throughout the zoom range.
High-speed imager AF linear motor drive system, with MSC (Movie and Still Image Compatible) support, provides fast, smooth, and quiet focusing performance.
Manual focus clutch permits efficient and intuitive switching between auto and manual focusing control.
The lens construction integrates one aspherical ED (extra-low dispersion) element, two aspherical elements, one DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) element, two extra-low dispersion elements, one HD element, and two HR (high-refractive index) elements into its design to minimize aberrations, distortion, and color fringing throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness, clarity, and fidelity.
Seven-blade circular diaphragm works to produce an aesthetic out-of-focus quality that is well-suited to shallow depth of field imagery.
Dust-, freeze-, and drip-proof design ensure the lens' performance in inclement and harsh conditions.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

This lens is fantastic on the EM-1. Purchased it as my starting MFT lens, and it has not let me down. A PRO quality lens in every sense. Compact, light weight, super sharp, bright, and fast with minimal distortion. Weatherproof and excellent built. Great for photographing on the streets and in the studio. A must have on your bag.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

I used the lens with a BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera to shoot documentary style footage mainly indoors. I found the zoom range to be idea for this kind of work. The build quality is excellent. The focus holds well throughout the zoom range. When the lens is fully open and zoomed out, the bokeh is decent. Not as dramatic as I've come to enjoy with the EF L glass we've shot on.

        Fantastic!

The range is better than Panasonic's 12-35 and with the Manual setting, gives less focal breathing when shooting video as you zoom in/out. The price point is similar and the images are great.

The construction is solid with many metal parts.

At f2.8, this lens has replaced a handful of primes that I aways kept in my bag.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

After doing several jobs where I was constantly changing primes, I decided to purchase this lens. The focal length covers the range that I typically need, and although it doesn't have stabilization like the comparable Lumix lens, it still provides excellent results.

The 12-40mm f/2.8 is now my go to lens and hasn't been off my GH3 since the day it arrived.

I use this lens while kayaking, hiking, anywhere. Even in inclement weather. That's the beauty of the Olympus 4/3s and this lens which are water resistant. Not that I anticipate dropping it overboard, but I don't have to stop shooting if rain rolls in.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

I am not a fan of consumer zooms, they start out slow and end even slower, the image quality is rarely equal to prime lenses and most of them feel cheaply made. But the 12-40mm f2.8 is a true pro lens at a very affordable price. It is sharp and reasonably fast, at a constant F2.8, across its entire range. The image quality is right up there with the Olympus primes. It has an extra assignable function button built right in the lens and the same manual focus snap ring used on the Olympus 12mm and 17mm. The lens body is solid metal construction, it is weather resistant, and includes a hood that locks in place. With one of the OMD bodies, this becomes the perfect single-lens kit.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

I purchased the M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens along with the OM-D E-M1 from B&H a while back to replace/update from my Nikon D80. At the time of my purchase, the OM-D E-M1 does not come with a kit lens. I decided on this lens because I think it's a most flexible and quality lens to begin the switch from DSLR to mirrorless. After shooting with it for a while, I am extremely happy with the decision.
The Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO is the equivalent of a 24-70mm f/2.8 full frame (24-80mm to be exact). It probably has the biggest diameter of all the M. Zuiko lenses. It looks quite impressive and professional with the E-M1. The built is quality and solid. The lens hood DOES come with the lens and it is reversible. If you carry your camera with a BlackRapid type of a strap (i.e. to your side), be careful to keep the lens hood release button away from your side to avoid accidently releasing the hood. The lens does not have IS but it's OK for me since my E-M1 does have 5-axis stabilization.
The zoom range and the wide angle on the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO are very user friendly. It allows you to take pictures at different distances and angles without you have to move around all the time to fit the subject into the frame because sometimes you don't have that option. The f/2.8 aperture means that the focus is very fast and it can handle the indoor photography very well. The only time that I have problem with indoor photography using this lens was taking picture of people dancing at a wedding reception. People were moving fast and the room was quite dim. Overall, the pictures are very sharp unless you compare them to the M. Zuiko 75mm f/1.8, which is ridiculously sharp and fast. I recently wrote a review on the 75mm f/1.8 and I gave it a four-star, instead of the five-star that I'm giving the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO. I really believe that the 12-40mm f/2.8 would give you the BEST bang for your buck because it is so flexible. Other lens could be sharper and faster but they are limited to a certain shooting occasion. The 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO can handle all of the occasions that you encounter with a high degree of success. It will end up staying on your camera all the time. It is a little pricey but it is worth it. You will NOT disappointed with this lens. I would HIGHLY recommend this lens to be the FIRST lens in everybody MFT lens collection.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

...it should be this one. It is a Pro-Level lens in every respect. All the superlatives that have been heaped upon this lens are spot-on: macro capabilities, landscape, portraits, weather resistance, relative size, etc. I use this on an EM5 without a grip and it is very comfortable. Fit and finish are flawless, zoom ring is firm and sure, autofocus is extremely fast and quiet (but not as fast as my 17mm f/1.8: that lens is ridiculously fast). Bokeh is smooth and creamy, color and contrast are wonderful and the sharpness corner to corner is superb at all apertures. More reach *would* be nice, but with its sharpness and the OMD's 350 dpi RAW resolution, it really becomes a minor issue. ISO 1600 looks gorgeous cropped in, and ISO 800 and below are phenomenal. To my eye, it outperforms my 24-70 f/2.8L, and certainly the 24-105 f/4L IS lens by a long shot. Enough said...if you've been vacillating on this lens, just buy it. you won't regret it.

Bought the OMD-EM10 for a smaller/lighter camera as compared to my Pentax K3. Love the Pentax but the Oly is the camera I'm starting to carry more often.

I use this for outdoor photography and around my house with kids and animals. the ability to do shoot scenery at the wide end, macro, and portrait range means this thing is glued to my camera. Fantastic depth of field, color rendering, and the ability to switch from auto to manual focus with the focus ring is great.

The sacrifice is size. Nothing compared to the same range on a dslr type lens but still big for m4/3.

This is one of the sharpest lenses from the Zuiko family. I use the 12-60 on my E-5, but this one is even sharper then the 12-60, and sits on my EM1 most of the time. Superb lens.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

Other reviews can tell you all you need to know, it's a great lens. Just wanted to add that I have (involuntarily) given this lens a quite rough treatment, and it just survives anything. Treatment includes a solid saltwater shower, followed by a freshwater shower to remove the salt, and I once threw it hard into a rock. The lens didn't seem affected by this at all. Even though I would recommend you to treat it nicer than me, it is evident that this lens is designed to tackle hard use.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

I purchased this as an upgrade to the Olympus 12-50mm kit lens that came with my OM-D E-M5. While I felt the 12-50mm was already under appreciated, this lens has totally blown me away with it's sharpness corner to corner, fast focus, and quality of build. Just picking it up...you know it's something special. This lens is most always attached now, only getting supplanted by my 45mm when shooting portraits, and my Panasonic 100-300mm for wildlife shots. I think my 17mm street lens will see the sun less and less (though it may come out for nighttime street photography from time to time). Bottom line...BUY THIS LENS.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

I bought the 12-40 when my 12-60 4/3 lens started the dreaded "clicking" -- it started sticking sometimes and it was really annoying to get improper exposures on such a nice system. This lens has been a joy -- it's very sharp throughout the aperture range, and focuses quite quickly and surely. Also, being able to use ALL the focusing points is really nice. The renditions from this lens are sharp, with a very nice bokeh at larger apertures and close distances. The size is good and just using it, you are seduced by the nice, smooth operation and just enough "heft". Using the EM1, many of the photos I took benefited only slightly by sharpening -- they were already incredibly sharp. It's a more consistent performer for me in the focus department than the 12-60, which occasionally missed focus (although I still loved the image quality). Now if it was just a 12-60 instead of maxing at 40!
