The Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens is a wide-angle to portrait-length zoom lens that is compatible with the Micro Four Thirds system. The 12-40mm focal length provides a 35mm-equivalent field of view of 24-80mm and a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture enables consistent low-light performance and shallow depth of field control throughout the zoom range.

The lens construction integrates an array of aspherical, extra-low dispersion, high-refractive index, and HD lens elements to provide a comprehensive reduction in chromatic aberrations and distortion while also contributing to high overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity. A high-speed imager AF linear motor drive system provides fast, smooth, and quiet focusing performance and the MSC (Movie and Still Image Compatible) designation indicates this lens' suitability for use with fast-moving subjects and video applications. Additionally, a manual focus clutch enables quick, seamless shifting between auto and manual focus control.

Additionally, the lens features a dust-, freeze-, and drip-proof construction that is tailored to its use in inclement conditions.

I purchased the M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens along with the OM-D E-M1 from B&H a while back to replace/update from my Nikon D80. At the time of my purchase, the OM-D E-M1 does not come with a kit lens. I decided on this lens because I think it's a most flexible and quality lens to begin the switch from DSLR to mirrorless. After shooting with it for a while, I am extremely happy with the decision.
The Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO is the equivalent of a 24-70mm f/2.8 full frame (24-80mm to be exact). It probably has the biggest diameter of all the M. Zuiko lenses. It looks quite impressive and professional with the E-M1. The built is quality and solid. The lens hood DOES come with the lens and it is reversible. If you carry your camera with a BlackRapid type of a strap (i.e. to your side), be careful to keep the lens hood release button away from your side to avoid accidently releasing the hood. The lens does not have IS but it's OK for me since my E-M1 does have 5-axis stabilization.
The zoom range and the wide angle on the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO are very user friendly. It allows you to take pictures at different distances and angles without you have to move around all the time to fit the subject into the frame because sometimes you don't have that option. The f/2.8 aperture means that the focus is very fast and it can handle the indoor photography very well. The only time that I have problem with indoor photography using this lens was taking picture of people dancing at a wedding reception. People were moving fast and the room was quite dim. Overall, the pictures are very sharp unless you compare them to the M. Zuiko 75mm f/1.8, which is ridiculously sharp and fast. I recently wrote a review on the 75mm f/1.8 and I gave it a four-star, instead of the five-star that I'm giving the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO. I really believe that the 12-40mm f/2.8 would give you the BEST bang for your buck because it is so flexible. Other lens could be sharper and faster but they are limited to a certain shooting occasion. The 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO can handle all of the occasions that you encounter with a high degree of success. It will end up staying on your camera all the time. It is a little pricey but it is worth it. You will NOT disappointed with this lens. I would HIGHLY recommend this lens to be the FIRST lens in everybody MFT lens collection.

Inconsistent auto focusing. Relatively reliable AF can only be achieved at 35mm. Sent my copy to service center for repair and did not see a whole not improvement. Manual focusing seems to be similar: it is hard to reach a perfect spot at 25mm and so on, but it is relatively easy to get in focus at 35mm manually. With such a price paid, I am very disappointed.

Don't let the PRO fool you. I have the lens for a year. It take great picture, but even normal use will not hold.
Sent it back to Oly for repair, wait two weeks for parts, come back with a missing screw on the lines mount. Sent it back again, and come back with the manual focus will not focus. It is wasting time. I also have EM-1 and EM-5, they all need repair.

I recently bought the E-M5 to test out the mft system as a smaller/lighter replacement to my apsc mirror-less cameras. I was impressed enough with the camera to get the 12-40 f/2.8 while it was on sale. I'm convinced. When I need a smaller alternative to my ff cameras, the OMD cameras with lens options like the excellent Oly 12-40 f/2.8 lens is the way to go...at least for me.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

This comes close to being a 'primary' lens as the focal length, the f2.8 aperture and the weight of the lens make it a great everyday choice. Yes, it is a bit heftier than the kit lens, but it is worth it for the added sharpness and light gathering capabilities of the lens.

          Good things:
          1. f2.8 maximum aperture (versus f3.5 to f5.6 for the kit lens
          2. Sharpness.....much, much better than the kit lens
          3. Contrast....much better than the kit lens (which is not bad)
          4. Ease of use....excellent, especially the placement of the self-focus/automatic focus option
          5. Weather proofing

          Not so great things:
          1. A bit of flare is evident in difficult lighting situations (especially backlighting)
          2. The barrel extension at longer focal lengths takes getting used to & is not a favorite feature.

Overall, a very good lens. My only regret is that I waited so long before purchasing it.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

I gave up my 14-150 for this because the f2.8 instead of f4 to 5.6. The new lens will also do focus stacking with the firmware 4.0, and because I am a macro fan, this really delights me. It is heavier than the other lens, but is decidedly well built. The manual focus clutch is a fast way to go back and forth between auto focus and manual which really helps me taking bird pictures with branches in the way. And I can even take it out in the rain!

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

As has been noted before, this lens performs extremely well. My copy, at least, gives excellent image quality wide open at all focal lengths with virtually no chromatic abberation at 18X24 print size, no flare shooting backlit objects, nearly undetectable distortion at all focal lengths, vignetting is slight only at wider angle settings and only in the corners wide open. It balances well on my Panasonic GX8 and has very solid and attractive construction. The versatility makes it the lens I use for 90% of my shots. Bokeh is attractive, both near and far. Manual focus works a treat and is very handy for critical work. And it looks great on the GX8.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

This lens has a solid build and feel to it without being too heavy. The zoom range is perfect for everyday use and makes for a good walkaround lens. Wide enough to use indoors as well. With the 2.8 Aperture it creates a nice shallow depth of field.

The only negative about this lens(and maybe its more on the camera I use) but it is long enough that the flash gets cutoff and you can see the outline of the lens when using on camera flash

Especially for hiking. On an Olympus OMD E-M10 II the DXOMark = 20. Only negative is that f22 is unusable (diffraction?), even though it's not really needed with the MFT massive depth of field at larger apertures. From f2.8 to f16 it's Canon L quality sharp. And it close-focuses to about 8".

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

I first rented this lens with the OMD EM-1 on a vacation to CA. I was impressed by the build of the camera and lens and the great images they produced. And the gear was much lighter and portable than my DSLR with the standard pro zoom. I have since sold my DSLR lenses and purchased the same combo. Fantastic lens for the m43 system!

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

This is a well built, good zoom lens for micro four-thirds, with fast autofocus, nice bokeh, and I really enjoy the flexibility of a zoom in this range. It is heavier than other micro four-thirds lenses, but it balances nicely on my body. However, I find that I prefer prime lenses on my OM-D EM-5 Mark II as they provide much sharper images with more contrast and brighter colors. Prime lenses are almost always going to be sharper than zooms, but I find it more so on my EM-5. Images with this zoom paled in comparison to my Olympus 25 mm and 75 mm images. This is the lens to have if you don't want to mess with changing lenses so much, but for me I don't mind given the results with the primes. The primes are also very light, so the body and 2 or 3 lenses amount to very little weight. I like this lens a lot, but my preference is for prime lenses.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

After outstanding success with the new 40-150 Olympus micro lens for my new OMD body, I purchased this lens for the mid-range. This lens replaced my steady 14-54 Olympus lens I used with an adapter, which served me well on E1 & E3 for years. This lens is fast and sharp, a real pleasure to use. The whole set up is remarkable in low light. The compact size of the OM body and lens is a real plus, especially for someone like me who carries a camera on backpacking and rafting trips.

I did lose the hood fairly quickly after I added a UV filter to the lens. The filter seemed to stress the hood where it attached.

But a sweet set-up all around, I highly recommend this lens and the OMD system.

Comments about Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens:

I've been using olympus cameras since the e-420 and I always liked using the standard kit lens (14-42mm).

I also own a 11-22mm but is really big, so almost all the time I always went back to my old kit lens when using my E-PL1 and E-M1.

This lens is the same size as my old kit lens. It feels at home in the E-M1. The build quality is really good, it feels way better than my old 11-22mm.

Very fast to focus and is very easy to switch to manual focus when needed.
The short focusing distance is a very useful and neat feature.

Is very sharp and I can't find chromatic aberration (11-22mm has a lot).

For the moment I don't have anything negative to say. I really like it so I started saving money for the 7-14mm.

Switched from a Canon 70D with a 17-55mm f/2.8 lens to an OM-D E-M1 with this one and I'm happy with the results. Excellent image quality in a much lighter package than what I had before.
