Comments about Rift Labs KICK Pocket Sized Lighting Studio for Photo/Video:

The most fun you will ever have with a light. IOS app works as advertised. Good battery life, small and light weight. yes the RGB mixing is not perfect, low power shows interlacing, and color changes as it gets brighter(less color as it gets brighter). Not a high power studio light, but for it's size its impressive, and yields improved results in many situation. Mine was shipped with a broken cable witch made me think it was DOA. But my biggest complaint is the build quality, it is so fun I want to bring it every were but I'm afraid I will break it. I want a tough version, that would be amazing.

Comments about Rift Labs KICK Pocket Sized Lighting Studio for Photo/Video:

Purchased one of these units. Used it this last weekend to shoot RAW HDR portraits. One lacking caveat of this is the lack of provision for attaching a diffusion filter. The developer emailed me to use a soft box, but it think it would drop the light volume too much. With testing, I devised a diffuser making a double cardstock mask using two plys of a paper napkin, and laminating with magnets. I glued round steel blanks, and attached my DIY diffuser. I set my bracket at -1EV with +/-2EV auto bracket for RAW to later process in HDR.

It can operate from its rechargeable battery, and better yet, one can plug in a charger (10W) [ P=IV, 10W = 2amp x 5Vdc; USB charging adapter with micro USB connector on the KICK] to charge and operate the light simutaneously.

It powers up in the tungsten 5000° K, and a simple press of it buttons and take it to a daylight 7500° K. Using the free apps for either Apple® iPhone™, or Android™, the color temperature can be set with a range of 1° to 10,000° K, and variable brightness between 0 and 100%. Additionally, different solid colors can be selected touching a color chart or inputting RGB values, or selecting a photos out of one's phone gallery and picking out a color in the photo. Great when setting to the color of a venue's logo colors.

I can see purchasing a least two more of these to multiply the overall light output, and placing two of them 90° from each other and the third unit above shining down for a keylight, a basic 3-point lighting. Depending on the sensitivity of one's camera (point-n-shoot, mirrorless, DSLR) this can work adequately in the field, including video.

With either one or (only seen, so far) five KICKs, turn them all on, they set a single IP address that one's smartphone can connect to, and operate in tandem with the same setting, or individually with different color temperature, brightness, or color.

The standard 1/4"-20 socket makes it handy to use on cold 1/4"-20 shoes, or tripods.

Some may gripe about banding of colors when shooting at 1/250 to 1/500 secs., I have to kinda say, duh! Simply use the old rule-of thumb, where flash sync was 1/60 sec. (Bulb), to 1/125 with newer analog SLRs. LEDs operate on a pulsed clock cycling. Shoot at these speeds and banding should not be introduced as an unwanted artifact. Morten Hjerde, the Scandinavian developer perhaps can tell more on this.
