The Sony PXW-Z100 4K Handheld XDCAM Camcorder provides professional-quality 4K recording in a familiar handheld form factor. It is capable of recording true 4K 4096x2160 resolution video at up to 50 and 60fps. Utilizing Sony's XVAC 4:2:2 10-bit intra frame recording format, the same found in the PMW-F55 CineAlta camera, the PXW-Z100 records 4K video at a maximum bit rate of 600Mbps. The camcorder features a G lens with 20x optical zoom and three control rings, dual XQD memory card slots, and 4K HDMI and 3G/HD-SDI interfaces.

The PXW-Z100 brings 4K shooting to the hands of the single-operator. Its traditional camcorder controls and ergonomics make adding the PXW-Z100 to your existing workflow seamless. Familiar features include XLR audio, ND filters, ASSIN button, white balance presets, and gain control settings. The PXW-Z100 makes professional-quality 4K images a reality for markets and applications such as educational and corporate videos, live events, and houses of worship. An NP-F970 L-Series battery, charger, and ECM-XM1 shotgun microphone come included.

Exmor R CMOS Sensor
The PXW-Z100 provides high-sensitivity and good low-light performance due to the back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor. With over 8.8 million pixels, the 1/2.3" sensor captures 4K images at frame rates of 23.98p, 25p, 29.97p, 50p, and or 59.94p.
High-Performance G Lens & Four-Stage ND Filters
The built-in, 4K optimized G lens provides a 30mm wide angle view (35mm equivalent) in 4K 4096x2160 mode or 31.5mm in QFHD 3840x2160 and Full HD 1920x1080 modes. It also offers a 20x optical zoom range and high-speed servo zoom controls. When shooting in sunny conditions, the built-in Neutral Density filters are available in clear, 1/4, 1/16, and 1/64.
XAVC Recording Format
The PXW-Z100 uses the same professional-quality XAVC recording format found in Sony's PMW-F55 CineAlta 4K camera. MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression is used to record Full HD (1920x1080), QFHD (3840x2016), and true 4K (4096x2160) content. Image sampling is 4:2:2 10-bit with intra frame recording at a maximum bit rate of 600 Mbps during 4K 60p recording, and 223 Mbps at Full HD 60p. Future upgrades are planned for 2014 to support XAVC LongGOP for extended recording time, AVCHD codec recording.
XQD Recording Media
XQD solid-state memory cards use the fast PCI Express interface to provide recording speeds up to 600 Mbps. The PXW-Z100 has two XQD slots, which can be set up in a variety of ways depending on your shooting needs. Relay recording mode will continue recording onto a second XQD card when your first card becomes full, without any break in recording. You can even replace the first card and switch back, for maximum recording sessions of 13 hours. Sony recommends their S Series XQD cards, which support transfer speeds up to 180 MB/s, for use with the PXW-Z100. The PXW-Z100 also supports Memory Stick Duo and SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards.
4K HDMI and 3G/HD-SDI Interfaces
The HDMI interface can output 4K as 50/60p signals and, when connected to a Sony PVM-X300 4K professional monitor or a 4K-compatible Sony BRAVIA TV, the recorded 4K image can be displayed at full 4K 50/60p quality. A future firmware update is planned to upgrade the HDMI interface from 1.4a to 2.0, enabling 4K 50/60p output to a wider range of devices. Other interfaces include 3G/HD-SDI, which outputs up to Full HD 60p signals, even during 4K recording. Simultaneous 4K HDMI and 3G/HD-SDI output in not supported.
Creative "Paint Function" for Multiple Parameter Adjustment
Adjust multiple image parameter settings using the "paint function" on the PXW-Z100, including gamma curve, black level, skin tone, detail, and color. These parameter settings can be saved as a profile onto a memory card, allowing you to use these settings in other PXW-Z100 camcorder. This is useful for matching images during multi-camera setups.
Wi-Fi Control
Remotely control focus, zoom, aperture, and record functions using the browser on your smartphone or tablet. Simply plug the supplied Wi-Fi adapter into the camcorder's USB port to enable the wireless control feature.
XLR Audio Inputs
Two XLR connecters support the use of professional-quality microphones. A Sony ECM-XM1 shotgun microphone comes included. Combine the built-in stereo microphone the external microphone inputs to record up to four channels of 24-bit 48kHz audio.
Additional Features
  • One-touch auto focus
  • Color peaking and focus magnifier for manual focus assist
  • Time code input/output

"Sony PXW-Z100 Camera is a game changer again in this price range".

The 4.2.2 color spacing in HD mode at 223 Mbps at 60P provides detail I have never seen from any camera at any price range.

The 4K 4:2:2 10-bit with intra frame recording at a maximum bit rate of 600 Mbps at during 4K 60p recording, and 223 Mbps at Full HD 60p is amazing. 10-bit intra frame recording format, the same found in the PMW-F55 CineAlta camera amazing detail. Love the Cinema 1 & Cinema 2 very vivid colors and deep black's shows a lot of detail almost like HDR like very nice look.

The amount of menu's settings and saving different setup shoots to SD card is Priceless.
The new XAVC (AVC/H.264 High 4:2:2 Intra Profile VBR) codec that's in the F-5 & F55 is amazing detail and latitude.

I would strongly recommend to buy the Sony 64G S 180MB/S XQD card & Sony card reader.
Sony records times are rock solid based on 64GB card.
    4K 59.94p mode: Approx. 10 min
    4K 50p mode: Approx. 15 min
    4K 29.97p mode: Approx. 20 min
    4K 25p mode: Approx. 25 min
    4K 23.98p mode: Approx. 30 min
    HD 59.94p, 50p mode: Approx. 30 min
    HD 29.97p, 25p mode: Approx. 60 mi
HD 23.98p mode: Approx. 75 min

Need 500GB internal card or external drive to record the 4K it eats up the two of 64Gigs fast 20 min especially in 60P mode.

Manual controls in Zoom & focus are rock solid.

"Focus Magnifier" is critical in "4K Production" this feature needs to be on every camera made in the future.

WIFI- Menu from the IPAD is a tool that's been need for years simple to use and easy to work with.

I used the HDMI output 4K amazing on the Sony 4K TV.

Bottom Line: Best HD & 4K camera in this price range.
GREAT JOB SONY THIS CAMERA ROCKS!!

On the surface this should be a fantastic kick-butt camera for those of us needing run-and-gun capabilities. Great 20x G-lens, super codecs, fast memory cards, great LCD, pro in's and out's including SDI and TC and of course true 4K!! BUT…
Apparently to get it in at this price point Sony had to compromise somewhere…they chose the wrong thing though…the sensor!
At 1/2.3 " it is just too small to pack the pixels necessary for 4K recording and maintain any usefulness in compromised light. I knew it wouldn't perform well in low light but the shocker was in good light…extremely noisy compared to my previous camera the Canon XF300. No matter what I did settings-wise the noise was there. And in my studio which has a permanently lit cyc wall green screen, I could not get a clean key at any quality setting. The XF keyed without any issues and provided a much sharper picture.
Some features missing from the Sony are WFM and face-detection AF. Would also be nice to have a more compressed codec available for situations not needing full tilt. Once again, most of Sony's camcorders offer AVCHD or MP4…why not this one?

I wanted to like this camera but there are too many issues…returned it.

Comments about Sony PXW-Z100 4K Handheld XDCAM Camcorder:

1 They promised: "A firmware update is planned for the middle of 2014 to support the Long GOP mode [...] to add support for AVCHD ..." . Still no delivery!2 Problem determined from no firmware: it happened 3 times after changing an Sony XQD card while recording to give me an error. Need to remove the battery to stop camera (OFF button didn't work) and after power ON it needed approximately 2 min to recover. I record continuously for a reason, and the camera made me to lose money. They promised (from the same promotional page) "Multiple cards can be used in various ways, such as for relay recording. When the first card becomes full, recording continues on second card without break". It works but not all the time. Last time a had an assistant looking at Z100 while I used an DSLR as B camera. I lost 50 min of recording because she didn't realize that camera stopped recording after she changed card (1 min after changing). If there was Long GOP recording I didn't need to change cards often. 3 There is o problem how the camera handles highlight that they didn't fix. Here is Sony response: "I believe that Emil needs to setup the IRIS (aperture) and ND filter along with the shutter so that this does not happen, unfortunately we do not assist with this as it is basic camera functionality.......

Looking at the footage on my 4k tv is really great!. I have used this for HD and 4k and I must say it looks great either way you shoot it. The 4k does eat up the memory cards faster of course but Sony will eventually come out with larger cards. I use this in my studio and on location filming for HBO and Fox sports. On numerous occasions in the past few months I have opted to grab this camera instead of my sony 800 simply because the image is the same or better plus the size is perfect for portability. There is nothing else out there that is compatible with this machine. As 4k tvs are becoming increasing popular so will this camera. GREAT PRODUCT!

Comments about Sony PXW-Z100 4K Handheld XDCAM Camcorder:

I bought the PXW Z100 in hopes to not have to purchase another camera when my clients begin asking for 4k footage for archives over the next 3 years. The look and feel of this camera is beautiful. All the buttons seem to be in all the right places if you are a current sony user. I almost sprung for the fs700r however you don't even get the true 4k recordability with the fs700r without spending thousands more dollars. For the price, 4k and the speed of the XQD cards I have to say this camera has been a blessing!. I am a huge beliver in proper lighting and our studio does take the time to light the subjects before shooting. As long as you are shooting 24fps with a shutter around 1/48 you will get great results with your standard 100watt houshold bulb. When you start shooting in 60p and running your shutter up then you will run into low light issues. I do hope sony comes out with a video camera like this that has a larger sensor and can perform in low light like the 7s but for now I am very happy with this camera becuase there is no better value in this price range.

You must use only XQD cards. The slot for SD card is not functioning. Sony says it is for a future upgrade (???). Good picture overall. I nervertheless film in 1080p, 30fps, for professional purpose. You will note that the files on the XQD's are huge.

After careful consideration in choosing a new camera I have to say I am very pleased with this one. My former camera was a canon xf300 which never truly impressed me. This camera is not great in low light which is fine with me because I always shoot with a full frame DSLR in a low light situation so I can take advantage of the performance I get out of a full frame sensor and prime lenses. For a hand held 4k camera coming in at $ I don't think there is a better option. And yes the HD looks amazing as well as having fantastic internal mics. I am very happy with this one.

I had no idea how poor this camera would be for normal indoor shooting. Wondering if it was me, I called Sony Pro product support and the tech told me (and I quote verbatim), "this camera is great for outdoor 4K shooting, but will definitely struggle in normal indoor lighting." I am SO sorry I bought this and wished I could return it (unfortunately it took me too long to realize how poor it was), with green screen and other indoor shooting the norm for my projects. The noise and blotchiness is totally unacceptable for a camera in this price range. My Sony AVCHD camera at 1/10 the price produced a much better, more useable indoor shot.

After using it for 6 months I regret buying it.
Discovered that every flash discharge makes camera to refocus (defocus and searching again focus). Worst camera used until now (past: Z1U, Z1000 and EX1).

Used for documentary run and gun to fully staged interviews in a studio with bi-colored GenRay lights. Works great with HD 1080 and 4K. No issues at all with the S series cards. On board audio is pretty darn great as well. I know some people complain about noise but the point is that you should never use the gain increase option with any of these form factor cameras it does not mater which brand you are talking about. Gain is not good on any camera until you get to the $20,000 and up body only. Add more lights, open up the iris, slow the shutter before moving the gain off low. Or just drop $150k on a cinematic set up if you really want to do low light right.

Comments about Sony PXW-Z100 4K Handheld XDCAM Camcorder:

I am using this as an independent filmmaker who originally shot 16mm features using Bolex, Auricon, Arriflex, Bell and Howell cameras, etc. This is a wonderful tool for filmmaking that allows an individual to capture an extremely high quality image with excellent audio.

It is a well designed camera for total control over all photographic and audio functions. Instead of wading through menus or awkwardly placed buttons, the controls one needs for actual shooting are right there on the body, instantly accessible. It has XLR mic inputs, with recording volume knobs. All manual settings are easily changeable to auto for emergency shooting, and there are separately adjustable rings for iris, zoom and focus. Also, the viewfinder has a logically laid out reading of all functions, right there for the operator to see easily.

Sony obviously worked hard on figuring out what would make this camera most useable to individual, run and gun filmmakers, while still keeping the data flow within manageable limits. I actually wanted to use a compressed video format rather than RAW for 4K because the data size this Sony creates allows you to back up and easily store precious original footage. Also, as has been pointed out by some reviewers, the camera shooting at 4K with its data rate will be down-converted beautifully for Bluray and HD rendering.

I think Sony tried to create a great camera for independent filmmakers that was the new version of the now-classic HDR-FX1 (which I also owned and loved) but with the newer, more detailed video resolutions now available. And they succeeded. As soon as I saw the original footage this camera creates I was blown away. This is beyond theatrical quality film in a handheld camera. It is an exciting tool for filmmakers!

Comments about Sony PXW-Z100 4K Handheld XDCAM Camcorder:

                              Cons:
                              - doesn't show remaining battery in minutes
                              - poor low light performance (still better than my HVR-Z1, so it's enough for me)
                              - no economy mode: AVCHD or XAVC-S (future firmware promise; I hope for AVCHD on XQD card not only SDXC)
                              - simple battery charger (Sony AC-VL1), better than camera charging but expected more
                              - a little slow menu browsing
                              - no exposure control on iris ring (like FX1000) and no exposure compensation on a button (AEshift/Override)
                              - no "OFF mode" for zoom ring (like Z1)

                              Pros:
                              - good FullHD and 4K details in good light (big difference from Z1)
                              - Sony XQD N series 64GB QDN64/T worked in 4K@25p (short test) !!4K@50p stopped recording after 2 seconds! (use S series for safer 4K recording!)
                              - included a 32GB S series card (not listed, maybe limited bonus)
                              - good audio recording (good control over XLR inputs)

Comments about Sony PXW-Z100 4K Handheld XDCAM Camcorder:

I love this camera. As a independent filmmaker, I set with just about everything I need with this camera. The footage looks great. All the bells and whistles are there. I am amazed how great of a camera this is for the price I paid. If you're looking to shoot 4K, this is the camera you have to get! Quality is amazing and runs pretty smoothly on my mac. I would recommend a powerful computer if you're going to be edit the raw 4K, but it is well worth it. I would recommend this camera any professional independent filmmakers out there, which need a look to the future but can't afford throwing 50 grand out the window.

I believe Sony jumped the gun on this one. Trying to beat BMC, Panasonic and others with a run & gun 4K. Releasing a new camera and announcing firmware updates seveal months in future is questionable. I love the look, form and fit. Easy to use both manual and auto. The grain and noise is totally unacceptable in bright day light. I didn't even dare evening or night shots. There were two very visible dusty bunnies on the sensor at 1/3 up and in from edge. Probably covered by most ground but sky shots completely unuseable. When I called Sony about the noise and grain he must have told me a half dozen times that the Z-100 is an entry level 4K camera and with the very small sensor size noise and grain is expected and is normal on all of them. I really wanted to keep it but with the grain and sensor noise along with a factory dirty sensor ... it went back. Will wait till Sony or another mainstream video manufacturer can come up with a clean 4K at a reasonable price. Based on my camera I would not recommend it... yet. Maybe the firmware upgrade in about March will fix part of the problem, the dust on sensor is just not acceptable and not user cleanable.

My son and I make youtube videos (Youtube accepts 4K). This camera works perfectly out of the box and has great automatic settings for those of us that just don't care about tweaking Gamma or Knee settings. It is a BEAST. Crazy good optical zoom (the aperture differences seems to be compensated for across the range when using the Auto settings. The camera is smart and helpful to manage exposure etc. We love it.

Beautiful video and all at 4k. Clips intercut well with 4k clips from my other 4k cameras. A run-and-gun deluxe 4k camera. Very light weight. Also features image stabilization. ND filters a'plenty for every shooting application. Light, compact, easy to carry in a bag on the plane. Will accommodate many lightweight tripods as it only weighs in around 6.5 pounds with everything on it.If you are shooting at 4k be sure to order the 180 mb/s chips as you will get a viewfinder error if you buy memory chips that are too slow. Not 125 mb/s or lower.
