The Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera is an advanced compact point-and-shoot featuring a 12.2 megapixel 1/1.7" backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and EXPEED C2 image processor to produce high resolution still imagery and full HD 1080p video recording at either 25 or 30 fps. The backside-illuminated sensor design enables impressive low-light performance, with a maximum native sensitivity of ISO 1600, for enhanced low-light shooting with reduced noise. The image processor contributes to producing a maximum full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 8 fps and also supports RAW shooting in the NRW format for greater post-production control over imagery.

The built-in 7.1x optical Zoom NIKKOR ED glass lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-200mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives. An f/2-4 maximum aperture benefits working in dim conditions and for greater control over selective focus. Also benefitting control over focus, and how movement is depicted, a built-in 3-stop neutral density filter can be utilized to provide enhanced control over exposure settings. Lens-shift type VR image stabilization is incorporated into the camera, too, to help minimize the appearance of camera shake in order to produce sharper imagery when working with greater zoom magnifications and in difficult lighting conditions.

For live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation, both a rear LCD monitor and electronic viewfinder are available for bright, clear viewing. The EVF features a 921k-dot resolution and is especially beneficial for accurate monitoring in bright conditions while the 3.0" 921k-dot vari-angle LCD features a tilting design to better support working from both high and low angles. A hot shoe and dedicated accessory port are both integrated into the P7800's design to facilitate the use of a wide range of accessories, including external Speedlights, the GP-1A GPS Unit, or the WU-1a Wireless Adapter. Additionally, the magnesium alloy covered body employs a highly intuitive, DSLR-like interface design for greater handling capabilities in regard to efficient camera control.

12.2MP BSI CMOS Sensor and EXPEED C2 Image Processor
A 12.2 megapixel back side illuminated 1/1.7" CMOS sensor and EXPEED C2 image processor work together to deliver high-resolution still imagery and full HD 1080p video with notable low-light quality and a native sensitivity range of ISO 80-1600, which is further expandable to ISO 6400. The processor also affords a fast full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 8 fps for up to six consecutive frames.
Zoom NIKKOR ED Glass Lens
The built-in 7.1x optical Zoom NIKKOR ED glass lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-200mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit working in a wide variety of conditions. Two extra-low dispersion elements are integrated into the optical design to reduce chromatic aberrations and improve clarity, sharpness, and contrast and the f/2-4 maximum aperture, and 7-blade rounded diaphragm, benefits working in low-light conditions as well as providing greater control over the plane of focus at both ends of the zoom range. Lens-shift type VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization works to minimize the appearance of camera shake, which further enhances image sharpness when working in dim conditions or with greater zoom magnifications. Additionally, an internal 0.9 (3 stop) neutral density filter allows for greater control over movement and focus within the image.
Camera Design
Within the compact form-factor of the P7800 is both a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and large LCD monitor. The 921k-dot EVF provides a bright, clear means, with 100% frame coverage, for eye-level finding that is ideally suited to use in difficult lighting conditions. Equally adept for critical viewing, the 3.0" 921k-dot vari-angle LCD monitor can swivel up to 180° to the side and tilt 270° forward/backward to benefit working from both high and low angles. It also utilizes an RGBW design to improve overall brightness to better support its use in daylight conditions.

The intuitive design also integrates a range of physical controls to mimic the handling capabilities of a DSLR. A manual exposure compensation dial, quick menu button, and variety of function buttons enable more efficient control over the most oft-used camera settings. A hot shoe is also incorporated into the design for utilizing external flashes or, alternatively, a built-in pop-up flash is available and can be used as a commander within the Nikon Creative Lighting System for control over external, off-camera Speedlights. An accessory terminal can be used to connect a variety of different accessories, including the WU-1a Wireless Adapter as well as the GP-1A GPS Unit or ML-L3 Remote Control. A magnesium alloy body cover enhances the durability of the camera and the lens features a threaded 40.5mm filter ring diameter to accept the use of additional screw-in type filters.
Full HD Movie Recording
Full HD 1080p video recording is supported in both 25 and 30 fps frame rates with both manual and aperture-priority exposure control capabilities. The built-in ND filter greatly benefits exposure control when recording movies and the dedicated movie button allows for instant switching between still and video modes. A built-in stereo microphone can be used to record sound or, alternatively, an external microphone jack is integrated into the design to support usage of an optional mic for higher quality sound with recordings. Voice memos can be recorded, too, in addition to the sound with movies for dictating notes during shooting. AV stereo, USB, and HDMI ports are all available to support a range of methods for sharing video files.
Other Camera Features
  • Full manual exposure control is possible, in Programmed Auto, Shutter Speed Priority, Aperture Priority, and Manual modes, for refined control over how both stills and movies look.

I have been a "serious" photographer for over 40 years and have worked with all kind of film and digital gear. My main system is a pro-level APS-C. About a month ago, I replaced my "go anywhere" Canon G12 with the P7800 and have been doing a good amount of "break in" shooting with it (Raw+jpeg, A mode, low ISO, developed in DxO Optics Pro 9 and processed in Photosop CS6). This is not a DSLR and should not be compared with one. It is a larger compact camera that I can still have with me everywhere I go. Considering its class and size, the P7800 is very well built and feels good enough in my average size male hands. It has a set of features for manual and auto shooting that rivals an entry-level DSLR's (just allow me this one comparizon). The unique EVF is necessarily small but a tremendous improvement in comparizon with no EVF or the optical finder of the Canon G series. The fully articulated LCD is bright and sharp, and comes very handy when your eye can't get to the EVF (i.e ground level closeups and over your head shooting). The sharp lens has a record range and is quite bright. With an inexpensive UHS-1 memory card, 12MP Raw+jpeg write speed is a decent 1.5sec/frame. After studying the manual and getting familiar with settings and commands, the P7800 does a very good job with Nature (closeups included), landscape, indoor, family, and even moderate action, night and simple product photography. IQ is such that, with proper shooting and processing, I can easily make fine-art quality prints up to 16x24" with my 17" photo printer. I am very happy with this camera but, as usual, try before you buy.

I am a pretty serious amateur photographer. Wanted a smaller camera to take with me to shoot both snapshots and more important subjects. Wanted some capability and control that one cannot get with a point and shoot. I am disappointed that the smallest aperture opening is F8. Biggest problem is that I cannot use the RAW feature. Although the RAW feature is available on the camera, Nikon changed the suffix to NRW instead of NEF. This is not recognizable by Photoshop versions clear up to CS5. Adobe Photoshop CS6 and CC for Photographers recognizes NRW, but I do not want to add the expense of new software on top of the cost of the camera. Nikon did not make this very clear about the raw file change in their advertisements.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

When traveling, I don't always like to carry my D700 so this one is perfect. It's light and fits easily in a day bag. I don't use the strap furnished with the camera, I like a wrist type better. The movie feature is great, although I rarely take videos, but when I do they are crisp and clear on an I-Pad. I was a little disappointed with the delay after pressing the shutter button. I had forgotten about this feature on point and shoot cameras. Overall, it's the best choice out there fort the money.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

Researched and bought this camera to use when I don't want to carry and use my Leica MP 240. I was looking for a small camera with a larger sensor to limit noise and as long a zoom as I could get with that larger sensor. It zooms to a 200MM equivalent. A longer zoom would be nice, but it's the longest I could find with the 1/1.7 sensor. Most other brands only zoom to a 135MM equivalent with this sensor. It has very little noise through ISO 1600 and is capable of manual settings. Image quality is great.

Accurate exposure and focusing system. Using with cold lighting for product pictures, keeping up with the dogs at play or just catching the moment (either stills or movies) this keeps up with anything I put it through. Well worth the money, and easy to use for wither point and shoot or more advanced usage.

The camera is easy to set up and used. The features offer enough flexibility in a smaller package that can me most image recording needs. Image quality good. The resolution is more that adequate for most photo opportunities - anticipated and unexpected. Purchased the camera used but then considered how much I would use the camera, returned it for a new one with a warranty and a few accessories.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

Yes, I would recommend this camera to others - it does almost everything a bigger digital camera will - but beware - if you misplace the owner manual - the small reference manual that comes with camera -Nikon cannot replace it. They tell me they don't even make them - it's a 3rd party. Long story - you can get a reprint made online but it will be 270 pages of 8 1/2 x 11" paper - and would probably weigh about 3+ lbs.... impossible to carry while shooting in the field. I'm really upset about this. The camera is so good - has so many abilities but is way over the average new owner's head. It's not the quick start menu I lost - the small reference manual. The big owner manual comes on disk... but again - reprinting is out of the question.

      Really bad design flaw

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

When you hit record to shoot video with the led closed - which you would do for speed every time you use the camera - it stops recording.
So when I shoot video of my kids and I'm recording and what to reframe or just see the from, I open up the lcd viewfinder and recording stops. Ridiculous. That's why the lcd is there. To change angles. Not to stop recording.
Shutter lag is up there with cameras I had 12 years ago. Auto focus slow as wee. Co

Also Manila focus setting locks ISO at 80

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

        Nikon Coolpix p7800

The Nikon P7800 is a very handy, small, light camera with unique features. It will not fit in your pocket like a Sony RX100m2 (unless you have cargo pants) but it will give you amazing results. I love the longer reach of the (equivalent) 200mm and the (equiv.) f2.0 28mm wide angle is plenty wide for most uses.

I was interested in a compact that could generate Raw files. There is a difference between the JPG and RAW output on the P7800, mainly in the dynamic range and sharpness, but it is not as great a difference as you would expect. RAW files from this camera will easily produce excellent prints up to 15 x 20 inches with surprising sharpness, fine detail, and dynamic range. My tests were shot at f3.5 @ 1/125sec. also at f5.6, and I was very pleased with the results. The optical quality of the lens does not disappoint. It is very sharp. And judging from the many downloadable samples available online for the Sony RX100m2 and the Canon Gx7 (both as JPG and RAW samples) the P7800 lens is sharper than those, even with the consideration of their larger sensors.

The fully articulated tilt/swivel LCD is a priceless feature for low or high-angle shooting and very practical for a camera of this weight and size. All of the dials are nicely positioned and easy to use except for the +/- Exp.Comp click-stop-dial at the right corner of the top. It is very stiff but certainly will not slip by accident.

One of the most pleasant surprises on the Nikon P7800 is an actual EVF. Having used the Canon G9, Canon G12, and others with a small optical VF or none at all, this electronic viewfinder is a very useful addition. Although the EVF is not ultra high resolution it provides lots of on-screen exposure information such as over/under exposure compensation, aperture, shutter speed, metering type, AE mode, ISO, and even a histogram. Yes, the histogram could be larger but given the constraints of screen size and the amount of information displayed, it is accurate enough and extremely useful, and does give a faithful indication of exposure although a bit low contrast.

There are two settings for close-ups. At the closest Macro Close-up (wide angle) setting it focuses about 1/2 inch (1 cm) from the front lens element. And there is the 40.5mm filter thread if you want to attach your own.

The AF spot is reposition-able, there are two programable Fn buttons for many functions, and 3 custom User Settings (U1, U2, U3). Using the Fn buttons in conjunction with some required dials is a bit awkward.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

We bought the camera mostly for travel and casual use, to replace an older point-and-shoot we were unhappy with. We have an SLR for more serious work, and I think the 7800 will be an improvement over our old travel camera. Outdoor pix are quite good. We chose the 7800 partly because of the large max aperture (F2), but we are a bit disappointed with the camera's performance in lower-light situations; pix seem noisy, especially when zoom is used and max aperture shrinks. But we are still learning to use the many features to best advantage, so we may be able to do better as we learn more. Camera is too large for shirt-pocket use; that was not a surprise, but a trade-off we understood.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

I will use this camera to carry daily, when I don't want the bulk of my SLR. I love this camera. As an older person, this camera at least patially brings back the "serious" feel of those substantially bodied and glass lens rangefinders of (ahem) earlier days. The electronic viewfinder is bright and usable - I'm not a fan of flip screens for general shooting.I bought it for the manual functions. I will use it for general photography, and a certain amount of my work is close-up and macro photography of very small 3D prints and metal castings. I can get usable images with this camera, although the smallest aperture is f/8 and with no focus ring depth of field is occasionally an issue. Manual focus is achieved with a spot focus function, and when locked down on a tripod that is cumbersome. Typically I'm using f/18 or so with an SLR.I'm very happy with the purchase. B & H's free shipping plus a free memory chip and carrying case made it a real bargain, although the case was not a good fit.

            Good camera for travel

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

I've had the P7800 for about two weeks now. I am a longstanding Nikon DSLR user but I wanted something smaller and unobtrusive for travel and hiking. After a bit of research and an online conversation with the B&H staff, I chose the P7800. I am surprised and pleased to say this is not simple point-and-shoot camera, but a pretty sophisticated camera that in fact requires some getting used to. The menus offer lots of options and I really like the custom user settings. Making adjustments on the run is not all that intuitive.... at least not yet. On the plus side, the lens seems pretty sharp and color rendition is good. I am pleased with my choice.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

I was looking for a point and shoot digital camera with an electronic viewfinder and this is a great one. I had a Nikon P7000 the viewfinder was optical and cover less than 80% of the captured image. Also it was not working as expected when you zoomed in.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

Bought the P7800 for a backup of my D7100, rather than carrying my D80 on a planned long trip. I've been shooting with it for 3 weeks and it is wonderful, more than I expected. Took 5 bracketed HDR pics and worked great, easier than my D80 & D7100. I have found no faults yet and it's easy enough for my wife to use.

Used when not carrying large DSLRs. Takes good pictures plus you have control over settings. A little slow writing but I knew that from other reviews, but jpegs are no problem. It is not a DSLR replacement but as an extra carry it is very good.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

I'm basically a Canon camera guy. I have a 20D, 5D & 5D MarkII for my professional work and a G12 for those many trips that my wife & I love to take. I've been looking for a good or better substitute for G12 which I didn't find in succeeding models G13-16. But Nikon's P7800 is one amazing, little camera that could do a lot. I bought it for a friend, but after test-driving it myself, I fell in love with it and would buy another to replace my old G12.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

I purchased the P7800 primarily to do take photos of my handcrafted artisan jewelry for my online selling ventures. I like the lens speed, the zoom range is appropriate to my subjects, and the ability to set and save user functions like aperture, ISO, metering, and white balance. I love that you can attach a shutter release cord and I purchased one with the camera. The articulating monitor screen is the best!!! I can use the camera comfortably on the tripod at different heights and even do self-portraits and be able to view the screen from in front of the camera. Others have stated where the EVF falls short, and it is true, but it is great having the viewfinder for outdoor macro photography. All-in-all it appears to be a camera to grow with and get photos that will sell my crafted items.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7800 Digital Camera:

I started using this camera for travel on trips where my Canon 7D with a telephoto lens was just too big to carry. I was looking for a camera that was small enough to carry on my belt, works well in low light, and takes great pictures under many different situations. This camera does all of this. Additionally, it has a 5X rather than the usual 3X digital zoom lens. This is very useful, and unusual for a fast lens that works well in low light situations.

Finally, it is easy to use, and I really bought it for my wife to take with her on a wilderness adventure. She is technophobic, and even she loved it. Between the auto mode and the "Scene" mode (automatically programmed for about 10 different difficult situations), it is quite easy to use even for a point and shoot photographer.

The quality of the pictures are better than any of my previous pocket cameras, but a bit below that of my Canon 7D in terms of the depth.

Although more pricy than many small cameras, for the quality and versatility, it is a good value.
