  • Quick Setup and Teardown
  • Soft, Even Lighting
  • Umbrella-Like Setup
  • Fully Adjustable Mounting Bracket
  • Height-Adjustable, Rotatable Bracket
  • Beauty Dish / Reflector Plate Included
  • Round Catchlights

The Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit from Westcott is a kit that includes everything you need to shoot 1-light portraits except the speedlight itself.

The Rapid Box is a light modifier that provides soft, even light right from your speedlight. A tilting 5/8" receiver stand mount/shoe mount/speed ring combo is included to attach your speedlight to the octa box. It disengages quickly from the box allowing it to close like an umbrella.

A 1.0 stop diffusion panel is included, as is a deflector plate. The diffusion panel is removable, revealing a highly reflective, high-output silver interior. When the deflector plate is in place it mimics the light of a large beauty dish, adding versatility to your lighting options. To tie this kit together, an 8' light stand is included to hold your octa box and speedlight in place.

Robust and Durable
The Rapid Box's poles and speed ring are constructed from solid aluminum to minimize weight yet retain durability.
Round Catchlights
Octa boxes produce round catchlights in the subject's eyes, which appear more natural than square or rectangular catchlights.
Quick Setup and Tear Down
The Rapid Box opens and closes like an umbrella, no support rods or adapter ring needed.
Sleek and Compact
With a shallow depth, the Rapid Box works in virtually any lighting situation.
Soft Even Lighting
A screw-in reflector plate will minimize any hot spots, and the front diffusion material further diffuses the light for softer portrait light.
Fully Adjustable Stand Bracket
The height and depth are adjustable and compatible with virtually all shoe-mounted flashes, except Sony speedlights.
Utilize Your Speedlight Without the Need for Radio Triggers
External speedlight placement allows firing via built-in slaves and/or IR line-of-site.

I'll review the softbox itself separately (on the page for the separate item), and focus here on whether you need the kit. There are basically two parts to that decision — the lightstand and the deflector plate. In short: the stand is not terrible. The plastic clips are a little flimsy and I'm a little worried about their long term use, but they're not horrible or falling right off (unlike some cheap gear I've gotten). The stand is light-duty, but appropriate for the weight of the rapid box plus a pretty decent-size flash. I didn't have any worries about putting it to full height and tipping the bracket downward — at least, indoors. Also, if you are space-constrained, you can use the legs at less than full extension to fit into a tighter space. That obviously makes it a bit less stable, but good enough in many situations. The deflector plate is another story. I've seen many comments calling this a basic necessity and lamenting that it isn't just included. It definitely *is* annoyingly overpriced at $[$]stand-alone, but if you are using this as a softbox, it produces a strong center shadow. For even light, what you need instead is a push-on (Sto-Fen type) diffuser for your flash (or, failing that, at least flip down the wide-angle panel). The deflector plate is really only for when you actually want to emulate a beauty dish. So, bottom line: if you're in need of a light-duty lightstand, this is a fine way to get it and you basically get the beauty dish deflector plate for free. Or alternately, if you want the deflector plate anyway, you get the stand for only about ten bucks more. But if you don't really want or need either, just get the softbox alone.

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

I decided to try this as my entry into off camera/studio lighting. I'm impressed by the quality of the kit. Was expecting the light stand to be cheaper. I'ts fairly sturdy, not the best, but better than what I expected.

Other than some experimental setups, I have only done one shoot with it. Indoors, and shooting head and shoulder shots. The results were great.

The wireless trigger I used went all the way up to the bracket before the flash was correctly postioned. If your trigger extends more than 2 1/2" from the front of your hotshoe, that could be a problem.

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

I bought this kit as my first attempt at off-camera flash. I cannot express how great this product enhanced my photography. It is very quick to set up. The most convenient thing about this kit is that the speedlite is VERY easy to get to. It sits on the outside of the Rapid Box for easy access.

This is a great product for me and I would recommend it to anybody!

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

Produces great soft light when used close to the subject. Stand is too light weight to prevent tipping over without sandbags but functions well as long as no lateral pressure is applied against it. Haven't tried with the beauty dish but a speedlight and dome diffuser works well to spread the light.

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

Rapid Box is good but over priced, the light stand included in the kit is cheap, the beauty disk should be included in the original price as it is a necessity. overall size it's small.

I only have had the product for a few weeks. I use it for portraits. It has eliminated the problems that I was having controlling the light with just flash and a 8x12 on the flash soft box. Works paricularly well in removing shadows from glasses. I liked it so much that I bought and just received the 20 " rapid box with deflector. Seems very well built.

I recently purchased the 26" Rapid Box Octa Speedlight kit and I am glad I dit. Very easy to assemble, well made, but light weight, easy to use and most importantly, nice, soft, beautiful but directional light. Produces light similar to a soft box, but with the setup ease onf an umbrella. Compacts down into a very compact and carry-able travel case. Couldn't ask for more !

I shoot a lot of models outside and was looking for quick set up to use as fill flash. I was amazed by the Westcott RapidBox. Set up was quick and easy, less than 2 minutes. The engineers at Westcott really know what a photogrpaher wants. And the results, I shoot my Canon 600 EX RT off camera with a TTL sync cord. The fill lighting is superb. I loved the results so much, I just ordered the XXL RapidBox. Highly recommend the Westcott products to everyone.

Comments about Westcott Rapid Box 26" Octa Speedlite Kit:

This is a soft box that sets up even faster than a conventional umbrella, yet gives much more controlled light. Its weight and size are very manageable by an assistant, even dangling over railings or perched overhead. The light quality is wonderfully soft and wrapping, and can easily be pushed very close to the model with good results. The light stand is far from stellar, the tripod being stubborn to raise and lower, but is completely functional, and light weight.

I love this softbox. Everything is quick and easy to put together. Nicely diffuses the light. Stores compactly in included carry bag. This is my first softbox so I don't have another to compare it to but I am greatly satisfied.
