    A Little Background
After suspecting the NEC LCD2690WUXi was on its way out (failed achieving target intensity during calibration) I phoned NEC tech support. I was pleasantly surprised that even though the unit was well past its warranty period, I got to talk with Aaron, a Level 2 Tech. Over the course of about 30 minutes we proceeded to run the monitor and the color sensor through a series of performance tests. The conclusion was certain; the back light was failing. The LCD2690WUXi has been a great monitor for the past 6 years and over 12,000 hours of actual use, but it was time to retire it.

The PA272 was one of the options Aaron and talked about, but then so was the discounted PA271 and even replacing the back light in the LCD2690WUXi. One of the compelling reasons for getting the PA272 was Aaron's endorsement of it – not in any way as a sales guy, but as a nerdy tech guy, my kind of guy! In more tangible terms; however, the PA272's back light is likely not going to fail nearly as soon since it's LED (start looking up the word 'metamerism').

    Setting it up
I love B&H, but I was less than happy with them when the User's Manual was in Cyrillic! And of course it was Friday noon when the UPS guy drove off. Minor issue, almost not worth mentioning – at least the pdf from NEC's website was in English.

The added USB ports are always welcomed, something the LCD2690WUX lacked, and the next noted refinement was the stand. The height adjustment lock in the lowest position makes it much safer moving this beast around and the cable caddy thing on the LCD2690WUX which would easily fall off has been replaced with a vertically sliding shield that's not removable. The other improvement made on the stand of the PA272 is the way the swivel left-right works. All kind of minor points but all pluses.

No DVD disk comes with the monitor, but one isn't needed for the PA272, so don't sweat that. Figuring out what the mini DisplayPort cable is really going to accomplish, I still have no idea, but I connected it anyway along with the DVI-D, USB and power.

    Powering UP
Windows found the new hardware and installed the generic USB hub drivers first and then fetched and installed PA272 drivers. After that successful run, the NVIDIA drivers and SpectraView II software were installed without issue.

    Calibration
The same calibration sensor that came with the LCD2690WUX (NEC iOne Display v2) and the update SpectraView II (v1.1.16.02) proceeded to do their thing smoothly... until it was finished. Whoa! That color is way way off! Later, my wife called it: 'sea foam' green when I asked here what color the screen looked like to her. For about 4 hours I combed through articles and reports searching how to fix this ugly green thing.

Many thanks and kudos to Marcin Kałuża (aka Czornyj) for his quick reply to my call for help on the Luminous Landscape forum and the easy solution: MultiProfiler, NEC's free software and a check in the box for Metamerism correction – hope that you looked up that word by now ;)

    Complaints
They are minor, but like the pluses, worth mentioning. The happy fix of being rid of the green cast through the MultiProfiler is short-lived and must be redone after each calibration. Why this little check box isn't 1) in SpectraView II to begin with and 2) on by default upon completion of the calibration process is something that escapes reason... maybe NEC will take note?

    Bottom line
This is a fantastic display device and is definitely the hands down successor to the LCD2690WUX.

I bought this monitor in April 2014. At the beginning of 2015, it started already to show signs of malfunction: a green, sometimes magenta vertical line would display from time to time. By August 2015, the magenta line was permanently showing, so I decided to take advantage of the 4 year warranty offered by NEC on this monitor and phoned them.

The lady was really cooperative and finally asked me to email photos of the monitor, showing the vertical line, and for helping them to check that the monitor was not damaged. Fair enough.

On the same day, they emailed me back to confirm that they would proceed with an exchange, but I had to call them with a valid credit card information to hold as collateral in the case that the defective unit would not be returned. Fair enough.

First surprise: speaking with another lady the next day to give my credit card info, I learned that I would not get a brand new unit, rather a refurbished one. Did not sound too bad on the phone, but now that I have the replacement monitor, it has plastic nicks on the right bottom corner. So I paid a small fortune for a brand new monitor and one year and four months later, I have a refurbished unit that is a bit damaged... The lady also told me that now that they had the credit card info, they would let me know by email when the replacement monitor would ship. They never did.

I live in a condominium building. I also gave them the apartment number, but it was not put on the mailing label. Of course, the replacement unit, quickly sent through a parcel service in less than 48 hours, was delivered to the wrong apartment... Fortunately, I have honest neighbours, otherwise one would have got a free computer monitor... And not knowing that it was shipped, I could have wait several days before even realized it had been delivered to the wrong address. Fast service, but clumsy enough to have caused a serious mess...

This computer monitor is the third one I have bought in my life (after an Apple display and a ViewSonic, and a few all-in-one computers in between) and is, by far, the most expensive I ever purchased (mainly for photo retouching and computer graphics) and yet, it's the only one that has failed so quickly. The customer service at NEC has some shortcomings, so all things considered, I am rather disappointed by this purchase, even though the monitor has, no doubt, great image quality. But does it worth the money? I will see the reliability of this replacement unit, but I am quite convinced now that one can have a good image quality at better price and that I will never buy again a monitor at such a high price, especially if it is a NEC. It does not worth it.

Comments about NEC PA272W-BK 27" LED Backlit Wide Gamut LCD Desktop Display (Black):

This is a really fine monitor for those requiring accurate color rendition, ability to calibrate easily, truly professional-level construction, and access to many professional-level features not found on cheaper monitors.

Also, and extremely important IMHO, is NEC's absolutely first-rate, Iowa-based tech support. No waiting forever on hold, no dealing with people whose command of English might not be so good.

I had some issues with the USB hub setup (you can hook 2 different computers to this monitor, and switch between them via a built-in USB hub, which functions as a KVM...) and NEC's tech support helped me sort it all out. Cheerful, expert professionals, all.

As shown in the specs, this monitor ships with 2 video cables: a MiniDP to DP, and DualLink DVD-D to DP. I have 2 workstations with DP outputs, so I had to pick up a DP to DP cable, a minor inconvenience.

If you're serious about producing files with accurate color, you'll also need the NEC MDSVSENSOR3 (calibration sensor) and SpectraView software kit.

NEC professional-level monitors are by no means inexpensive. But if you rely on your monitor for helping you to produce quality work - and given the 4-year warranty - this one is well worth the money. On sale and free shipping at B&H? Not that difficult a choice to make.

Comments about NEC PA272W-BK 27" LED Backlit Wide Gamut LCD Desktop Display (Black):

I have been using an older NEC monitor, model P221W, it has served me really good for last 5 years. This Multisync PA272W is a huge improvement. Comparing side by side the new one is a lot better, especially for photo editing. It's like rediscovering my own work again. No regrets at all and I got really good deal at B&H.

I've been procrastinating on getting a new monitor because of cost. Finally did, upgrading from a 20" CRT, which was still in pretty good shape, to the NEC. WOW. Why did I wait so long? It's beautiful and so much space. I am a pro photographer and using photo programs is so much easier. One recommendation - When I first set it up, I used a color profiler but didn't lower the brightness factor. After the first adjustment, the monitor was simply too bright. I am referring to anything "white". I redid it, adjusting the level lower and then re-profiling. Perfect!

Using this with a MacBook Pro. I purchased this as a replacement for a 24" Dell Ultrasharp that I thought was really good. This monitor was fantastic right out of the box! Then I calibrated it using the Spectraview software and i1Display pro. Wow! is all I can say.
The color, details, uniformity etc. etc. is better than I could have dreamed.
NEC was running a deal to get a free monitor hood with this purchase! Score!!

This amazing , beautifully evenly lit monitor was a step up from an inexpensive 19" HP. It's hard to imagine going back to the smaller screen. I had read good reviews about this monitor so when I saw it on sale I jumped for it. However, I did not realize that I would also have to upgrade my old il Display to the newer i1 Display Pro so that I could calibrate the wide-gamut. I also bought Spectraview II separately so that I could run & store the custom calibrations and now that I have downloaded the free MultiProfiler the 'system' is all starting to come together.I really appreciate that the MultiProfiler allows me to adjust the brightness on any of the presets (including my stored -on -the -monitor Spectraview calibration) outside of redoing the calibration each time. Also I can see that the PIP where I can run an image in 2 different color spaces at the same time will be a boon for adjusting an image that will go online in sRBG but print offline in aRBG. I gave 4 stars because understanding how to put the system together has been a prolonged learning experience despite having plenty of experience at calibrating & profiling. NEC employees seem to always be available and extremely patient, however there is still a learning curve.

Comments about NEC PA272W-BK 27" LED Backlit Wide Gamut LCD Desktop Display (Black):

I upgraded from another NEC display so I can have a larger screen and more room to work and this hasn't let me down. Built like a tank, easy to calibrate with the correct hardware/software (I had a previous copy of SpectraviewII and an XRite i1 Display), and I have a lot more room for Photoshop and Lightroom. Perfect uniformity, no dead pixels and the matte coating is much less noticeable on this display.

Comments about NEC PA272W-BK 27" LED Backlit Wide Gamut LCD Desktop Display (Black):

I have the PA271W, now have added the 272 on a second machine. I love the NEC color management software, so I can easily switch between profiles for print production, web, or broadcast (video) based on my project. I pair this with an inexpensive Samsung 24" which is just for palettes in Premiere/Photoshop. this monitor profiles easily, and amazingly accurately too. I was tempted by the big panoramic LG, but didn't feel confident in the color calibration and gamut.

My second monitor for photo editing and I could not be happier. Upgraded to this from a smaller EIZO monitor that I had for some time now. Was looking to get into a 27" and funds were limiting me from getting into the 27" EIZO CG that I wanted. Took a look at the NEC at the recommendation of several friends and I have to say for general performance it is definitely on par with the EIZO I had in the past. I saved around $[$]! The warranty coverage is a little shorter than the EIZO but I have never had a need to service any monitor so this is not entirely important to my buying decision. I would definitely recommend to anyone.

I love this monitor for the price. I've had many high end color calibrated monitors over the years (being in the graphics business). I'm retired now and wanted an affordable large monitor that would calibrate well, not consume too much power, and be pleasing on th eyes. This on fits the bill.
And there is a promotion right now from NEC for a free hood which I ordered; a nice bonus.

Comments about NEC PA272W-BK 27" LED Backlit Wide Gamut LCD Desktop Display (Black):

I upgraded from the 241W to the 272W as I needed more screen real estate and wanted higher resolution. It's an excellent monitor - uniformity is very good, colors are natural (I've calibrated the monitor), contrast is excellent - great for both photography and business. Good selection of ports, including USB. And with the current promotion, it's a good deal! B&H shipped immediately as always

I use my monitor for processing images so I need excellent color and sharpness. Ease of calibration with thrid party calibration system is also important for my work. This monitor meets my needs. Also the size if great. Not too big but just right for my space and requirements.
