The camcorder also offers a photo mode that captures up to 20.4 megapixel 16:9 or 15.1 megapixel 4:3 still images. While recording video, it can take 9.4 megapixel 16:9 or 1.4 megapixel 4:3 images. A stereo microphone comes included with the camcorder.

Wide Range of Recording Formats
The camcorder records AVCHD footage in a wide range of recording formats, including 1920x1080/60p at 28Mbps, 1920x1080/60i at up to 24Mbps, 1440x1080/60i at 5Mbps, 1280x720/60p at 8Mbps, and 720x480/60i at 9Mbps.
1/4.5" High-Sensitivity MOS Sensor
The high sensitivity MOS sensor features larger photodiodes beneath each pixel than on a conventional sensor, allowing it to capture a more light and offer improved low light performance.
Wide-Angle 28mm f/1.8-3.5 Lens
With a 35mm equivalent focal length of 28mm, the wide-angle f/1.8-3.5 lens lets you fit more people into the background when shooting in narrow spaces. It also is great for capturing expansive landscape shots. The large 3.9 x 5.5" lens hood blocks out unwanted light when shooting outdoors or in bright conditions.
21x Optical & 50x Intelligent Zoom
Capture scenes in areas that your camera can't get close to with a powerful 21x optical zoom range. A 50x high-resolution Intelligent zoom features lets you push the range farther, while preserving image resolution.
Dual SD Card Slots with Relay Auto Switch
The AG-AC8PJ features dual SD card slots that accept SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards. You can choose to record simultaneously to two memory cards for extra data security, or use the Relay Auto Switch mode to continue recording to a second card when the first one is full. For gapless audio playback, use the Relay Scene combining function, available when transferring the files to an external HDD via USB connection.
Ergonomic and Functional Design
The shoulder-mount designed of the camcorder provides a 4-points of contact for increased stability. The 3.0" touchscreen LCD is 7.9 inches away from your eye, providing a comfortable distance for viewing. For good weight balance, the battery jacks are placed at the rear of the camera.
5-Axis Hybrid O.I.S.+
Suppresses blurring and jitters of shaky footage, allowing you to capture clear images in a variety of shooting conditions.
Multi-Purpose Lens Ring
The manual ring on the lens barrel can be programmed to provide fine and precise adjustment control of focus, zoom, iris, white balance, or shutter speed.
Level Shot Function
When enabled, the camcorder will automatically detect and correct non-level images. This lets you record more horizontal images without a tripod when shooting in unstable positions such as high-angle or low-angle shot.
20.4 Megapixel Still Images
In addition to HD video, the camcorder is able to produce high quality still images with a resolution of 20.4MP in 16:9 mode, and 15.1MP in 4:3 mode. While recording video, 9.4MP 16:9 stills and 1.4 megapixel 4:3 stills can be captured simultaneously.

This is a camera with a specific mission. To make professional videographers look professional, even on the leanest of budgets. We all know for most purposes, a modern HD handheld consumer camcorder is an amazing device in the right hands. A tiny 1000 dollar camcorder is capable of capturing video quality good enough to broadcast, and the viewer would never know the difference. Clients watching you in action is another story. If you show up to a gig with a Handycam sized device, no one will take you seriously, regardless of how well your video comes out or looks as a finished product. But while this large camcorder may look professional to wedding guests, any serious pro will know it's a consumer camera in a bigger box.Panasonic has taken the fine working guts of a high end consumer camcorder, refined them a bit, and placed them into a shoulder mounted camera that looks the part. Make no mistake about it, this isn't going to do the job of a RED cam or Cine Alta. However, for [$] bucks, it's the best game in town for looking more professional at a wedding or similar event shoot. And you won't have 10,000 dollars worth of gear at risk in the field. So, does this camcorder have what it takes to get the job done? Mostly, yes. The sharpness is about the best I've seen in a [$] dollar camera of any type, and it works well in low light. About as well as any [$] dollar consumer camcorder, and maybe just a bit better. The on screen menu controls are still a bit consumerish, but a few pro settings like time code, zebra stripes and video peaking have made it to the menu. A lack of three chips and XLR connectors keeps the shooting in the prosumer mode as opposed to professional, but for some venues, these features are not needed.Working with the AC8 is true joy compared to using a DSLR. This is a real video camera, and it will run all day on a single battery charge and a 32 gig SD card. Use two 32 gig cards, and you have simultaneous backup as you shoot. No problems with card speed or video stopping because of processor overheating. This camera will run flawlessly all day long and won't stop continuously shooting until you run out of space on the card, which is about 8 hours depending on your quality setting. The lowest data rate of 5 megabits per second looks quite good. The highest at 28 meg, which is 60P, looks stunning. What the camera gives up is that luscious depth of field and color saturation of a DSLR. The small chip keeps most of the frame in focus at the wide angle setting, but for most event shooters this is a plus. Color saturation can be turned up in the camera settings, or boosted in post. Even though there's no XLR connectors, the external eighth inch mike jack works good enough for most users. There's a headphone jack to monitor, too.Combined with the shoulder mounted design, the optical image stabilizer works wonders. I've stood for twenty minutes shooting rock steady video that looks like the camera was locked down. If you are used to shooting this way, it's silky smooth even while you walk with the camera. The one thing I dislike is the new battery size. It does not mix with the previous years of Panasonic prosumer cameras like the AC40, AC130 or AC150. You'll need all new batteries.

For the price I am very impressed with the picture quality, image stabilization, battery life, light weight, everything. However, there is one tragic flaw with this camera that may render it useless for my needs. I noticed that when the Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) is on, pressing the rec/pause button causes a noticeable glitch, or shake in the image. It is particularly noticeable when zoomed in and it does not occur when the OIS is off. This glitch gets recorded at the end of every shot (but not at the beginning).

I tried another unit and it did the same thing. Panasonic tech support seemed surprised to discover that their unit did the same thing also. Their suggested solution was to trim the end of each shot in editing, or not use the OIS, which are not options with my particular workflow.

I am now in touch with a quality engineer at Panasonic who is helping me diagnose (and hopefully find a solution to) this problem. I may not be able to use this camera for my purposes, which is a shame because it is so perfect for my needs is almost every other way. If we find a solution I will write a follow up here.

First Impression- I just unpacked the camera yesterday. I loved the overall size which makes it easier for me to hold and get stable video. The zoom is awesome. Controls are easy to understand and use. I did pick up some noise in the audio caused by pressures that I exerted on the case by my hands and body. These were "plastic" sounds that sounded like something creaking. This noise was not objectionable and could be avoided. The picture quality was good. I do wish that the shoulder pad was adjustable fore and aft but at this price point, I am very happy. I own a high end prosumer 3mos camera that doesn't take any better video. The camera does not do some formats or 24 frame but it does the ones that I want (1080 I and P). I am very happy with the camera.

After reading all the reviews on this camera I was very surprised that no one mentioned this. My fault for not reading the specs thoroughly, but I just assumed that this camera would have 24 fps capability since just about every CHEAP camera I've ever seen offers this option, not to mention something that is in Panasonic's "pro" category. It doesn't even offer 30 frames per second either! Just 60i and 60p. I mean, wow. Really? I was completely shocked to learn this when I got it and started playing around with it.

I'm a wedding videographer and I absolutely need the option of shooting in the cinematic 24 fps, or at least 30 so there can be a little bit of motion blur to make it look soft and natural. I'm pondering sending it back because of this.

I couldn't be more satisfied with my new Panasonic AG-AC8PJ. I spent days investigating specs and comparing reviews from B&H, and I found this camcorder to be the perfect fit for my intentions as a videographer. The Dual SD Relay Record feature was a blessing at last weekend's event. The lightweight shoulder-mount/handheld capability makes it extremely comfortable, and also makes me look cool!!! :)

                    I will be buying a 2nd AG-AC8PJ as soon as I can.

I am a very new amateur videographer, and while I don't know yet how to use the more advanced camera functions, the basic filming functions were absolutely intuitive, and easier to use than our older, consumer version. Our final product looked great, and from start to finish this camera provided me with the tools I needed to make a professional impression.

Comments about Panasonic AG-AC8PJ AVCCAM HD Shoulder-Mount Camcorder:

I do a lot of weddings and sweet sixteens and the best thing about the AG-AC8 is that it is automatic and has great sound quality. It also looks very professional when your carrying around a huge camera like this one. The reason why I gave it 3 stars because the picture quality to me doesn't feel like HD. I'm used to shooting with the Canon 5D Mark II and it doesn't even compare to it. I think my Canon GL2 is sharper than this camera, but for the price you can't go wrong. It also has a 1.8 aperture so it's great in low light.

I am looking forward to doing more production work and weddings with it. The only down side of it is that it does not have XLR ports.(would give 5 stars) I have recommended to friends.

Panasonic has taken the fine working guts of a high end consumer camcorder, refined them a bit, and placed them into a shoulder mounted camera that looks professional. Make no mistake about it, this isn't going to do the job of a RED cam or Cine Alta. But for 1200 bucks, it's the cheapest game in town for looking professional at an event shoot. This is a camera with a specific mission. To make professional videographers look professional, even on the leanest of budgets. The sharpness is about the best I've seen in a [$] camera of any type. It works well in low light, too. The on screen menu controls are still a bit consumerish, but a few pro settings like time code, zebra stripes and video peaking have made it to the menu. A lack of three chips and XLR connectors keeps the shooting in the prosumer mode as opposed to professional, but for some venues, these features are not needed. Color is very accurate. The saturation can be turned up in the camera settings or boosted in post. Even though there's no XLR connectors, the external eighth inch mike jack works good enough for most users. There's a headphone jack to monitor sound.Combined with the shoulder mounted design, the optical image stabilizer works wonders. It lets you stand for twenty minutes shooting rock steady video that looks like the camera was locked down.Working with ths AC8 is a true joy compared to using a DSLR. This is a real video camera, and it will run all day on a single battery charge and a 32 gig SD card. Use two 32 gig cards, and you have simultaneous backup as you shoot. No problems with card speed or video stopping because of processor overheating. This camera will run flawlessly all day long. The one thing I dislike is the new battery size. It is not compatible with the previous years of Panasonic batteries made for the AC40, AC130 or AC150. You'll need all new batteries.

I have bought two of these camcorders and they are everything you need for Corporate, Wedding, & Event video.

Big improvment over the AG-AC7 which I just sold. Sharp picture, good low light, great stabilizer, plenty of zoom.

Has as good a picture quality as our AG-HMC80 but the AG-AC8 is better in low light.

No problems with card speed or video stopping because of processor overheating. This camera will run flawlessly all day long and won't stop continuously shooting until you run out of space on the card, which is about 8 hours depending on your quality setting. The lowest data rate of 5 megabits per second looks quite good. Comments about Panasonic AG-AC8PJ AVCCAM HD Shoulder-Mount Camcorder:

If you want AG-AC90 stabilization quality at a cheaper price then you must get this camera! Plus it has an F-FSI sensor instead of a BSI. [*]A must read, and B&H has it the cheapest!
