Last years set of windows 8 tablets were a great start to getting windows 8 into the ultra mobile arena. The Atom processors in them kept them thing, cool, and energy efficient all while allowing us to run a full windows operating system halfway decently. They weren't perfect, with limitations like usb 2.0, 2gb of ram, poor graphics, and a sometimes lackluster desktop performance. Intel sets to out do itself with the newer Baytrail chipset giving better processing and video performance as well as compatibility with newer technologies. With windows 8.1 a while slew of new tablets are being released with newer processors and other updated specs, the Asus T100 is one of the first.

Design: If you have used a transformer pad, you will be in a familiar territory. The T100 has a glossy back with the usual Asus logo coming out of the center. It is comfortable and has a decent enough grip to it. The front compared to some other tablets has a decent bezel but nothing to bad, it helps when holding it so you don't accidentally touch the screen. On the right you have the micro usb (for peripherals and charging), micro hdmi, micro sd, and headphone jack. Top has power, and left includes a volume and windows start button strangely (the front windows button doesn't do anything).

On the bottom you have the port connection the the keyboard. This snaps and locks in to the keyboard to kep it steady and from disconnecting. Overall the feel of the tablet on the keyboard is pretty good, it feels for the most part like a laptop (as well as looks like one albeit a tiny one). The provided keybaord looks good, it has a polished metal look and some good weight to it (which helps with the weight of the tablet). The size is fairly is tiny, which is expected and because of this kind of hard to type on, I wouldn't try a very huge typing session. The only thing That I really don't like is the mouse pad, it works for pointing but the clicking goes far to deep and is just hard to use overall.

Display: The display looks pretty nice, it has good angles, good color and just really for the price doesn't disappoint in the slightest.

Battery life: I haven't had any trouble with it so far but I haven't actually paid enough attention to give an accurate say on it. It looks like I could get the advertised 11 hours, some reviews have claimed they got up to 12 hours even. I will try and update once I get a better read on it.

Software: Windows 8.1 seems to have some decent additions to what windows 8 already offered. As I have said in other reviews windows 8 I think it is the most dynamic mobile operating system right now. I have used many android tablets, as well as Ipads and while they are all great in their own right windows 8 just takes the cake. Apple has the most apps (especially tablet apps) , Google is a good mix of openness and a large amount of tablets apps. Windows 8 doesn't have a ton of table optimized applications, but the ability to have a full windows desktop applications is just awesome. It runs a smooth touch interface tablet when I need it for that, but if I really want to do business I can do it with this and run real windows programs such as photoshop, flash, steam etc.

Performance: Bay trail performance greatly meets my expectations. Almost all of the performance woes I had with clover trail are gone. The desktop lag I had is now pretty much gone, applications and windows open pretty much immediately. I had issues with websites like hulu before and now it runs without any issues. The metro touch interface is as smooth as ever, dual apps work like a charm as well. I've also tested the gaming ability, with some older and newer games just to test out the video capabilities.

The first game I tried was Elder Scolls V: Skyrim , I know right , is this thing ever going to start? Well after a lengthy load session I got in and at lowest settings I got a 10-15fps really not the worst performance ever though not really playable. From there I tried some more realistic titles
Bastion – For some reason stuck at 20fps, probably a glitch between the hardware and software.
League of legends – At low settings a very playable 40fps which is just great!
      Half-life 2 – At medium settings I got around 40fps
Far cry 2 – low settings 20 fps
Torchlight – high settings 40-50 fps
Rollercoaster tycoon 3 – high settings 40+ fps
Tony Hawk HD – 15 fps
Legend of Grimrock – 40-50 fps medium settings
      Flatout 2 – 40-50 fps

I figure that should give a pretty good idea of what to expect as far as older games, it really doesn't do bad at all considering it is a 10 inch tablet ultra thing tablet, with 11 hours of battery and no fans.

Overall my conclusion is a real giant thumbs up to this new generation of windows tablets. It did everything it's predecessor did but better. Asus itself gives a really great deal here including the keyboard that works well for what it is. The only thing I wish this tablet had is dual digitizer pen input which if you have ever used it on these makes things a lot easier sometimes. Spending extra on a Surface Pro tablet might have some performance advantages but you lose a lot of mobility and battery as well. Looking at the other platforms I really encourage you to give windows 8 a go, it really has a lot of advantages to possibly consider switching over to this newer tablet market.

I bought this as a travel companion in hopes that it will have good battery life and be a fully functional little pc (with performance compromises). In many ways it fills this role better than netbooks (NBs) of yesteryear, but there are several areas where it regresses.

First, the strengths: battery life in actual use is very good and 10h is realistically attainable with light use; CPU and GPU performance is noticably better than previous generation NBs; the screen is a huge improvement over old 1024x600 TN panels in last-gen NBs; for once, this convertible tablet does not represent terrible value compared to netbooks in terms of the hardware you get for your dollar. The micro USB supports USB OTG, though it will not power a hard drive. Thankfully the USB 3.0 port does without issue (though transfer speeds are limited by the on-board eMMC SSD)

Now, the weaknesses: "connected standby" is a battery vampire- despite marketing claims of up to 2 weeks standby, mine's always dead in 1-4 days of non-use and I've uninstalled most metro apps, disabled system updates, and other maintenance activities when on battery power. Read up on this as it has been plaguing the Intel Atom tablets/convertibles since day 1 and Windows 8.1 has not done anything to fix it. There is no way I know of to disable the "connected" part of it, and it means that traditional S1 sleep is completely broken. My sandy-bridge Acer TimelineX can sleep for over 3 weeks; this lil guy can barely make it past 3 days! Next, the touchpad has a noticable input lag, where if you first start using it, it won't register your finger for ~1 second. Next, compared to old netbooks, this thing has practically no expandability/connectivity. Whereas old netbooks had normal SATA (so you could put in a real SSD) and replacable RAM- on this thing you are stuck with only 2GB RAM and a brutally slow eMMC SSD. There is only 1 normal size USB port- I know this is a budget device, but it would cost next to nothing to put a few more in the keyboard and a full-size SD card reader. An ethernet port is missed by me as well every time I have to transfer large amounts of files. These are things that old netbooks always had and were better for it. Lastly, the included charger is woefully inadequate at only 10W. If you have the brightness turned up and are using it while plugged in, it practically does not charge the battery.

Overall, it's a good device with a few software issues that should have been ironed out before shipping: connected standby and the touchpad delay. I would have happily paid a bit more if the keyboard was more functional (had more USB ports, SD card reader and maybe ethernet) and had a 4GB RAM option, which you really need if you want to use this as more than just a tablet.

Comments about ASUS 64GB T100 Series Transformer Book (Dark Grey):

When the tablet fad started I knew there were some things I would not get in a tablet that I got in a laptop like access to some old programs. So when the first Windows utrabooks came out, I was really disappointed with what they could do. Finally, I see the Transformer and see it can run a full Win 8 (not RT) and tell myself "That's what I'm looking for!" I already had an external DVD drive and using the full USB on the Transformer's keyboard dock, I was able to easily install what software I had on disk to it! Unlike a regular laptop, battery life is much better and I can rest it on my lap and not get pain from the heat. Windows app store isn't close to Google's or Apple but that's why I got a smartphone. I think anyone who buys this should see it more as a link to their Windows machine and not as a bridge between the full machine and their phone. One suggestion- after you charge it the first time, IMMEDIATELY do a windows update. I hadn't and then I see a message I have dozens of updates to install and that took a few hours to complete.

Purchased as a graduation present for my college bound son. He is really tech savvy, attending college for computer animation, and this was the brand and model he had marveled at previously, so I decided what better gift. He wanted it so that he could take notes in class, and for it to be an extension of his larger, game playing laptop. He loves it!

The only bad thing about this wonderful transformer book is [Windows 8] - it would be the perfect machine if it ran windows 7. I wish there was a way to replace windows 8 by windows 7. I think Microsoft would make a lot of money if it offers a way to go back to windows 7. Let's hope.

I have been using a Kindle Fire HDX. With the end of Windows XP support I decided to try Windows 8.1 in a tablet format. This ASUS is very heavy with a great keyboard. However, the touch pad is erratic.
The main problem is the software is misnamed. This Transformer Book is actually loaded with Vista 8.1! i.e.: six hour loop first update, ASUS update crash, must update one item at a time to load, turn it on and touch screen won't work right unless you restart, with the slightest touch move flinch the page flies wherever it wants.
About the time they get all these bugs out Microsoft will be releasing Windows 9.
I wish I could load this Book with Windows 7 to complement Android.

I ended up with a Surface Pro 128GB.Windows 8.1 is a complete positive for the ASUS, it's WAY better than Win RT, and unlike my Surface Pro, this Transformer Book comes with a full version of Win 8 small screen Office, and a tactile keyboard that doesn't cost [$] dollars extra.I was going to use this ASUS as a photo booth touchscreen but you cannot plug a full sized USB 3 into the tablet portion of this laptop/notebook. Plugging in a DSLR camera, and a printer just wasn't happening. The USB port on the tablet only takes a charge, and doesn't connect to peripherals, except the charger. You have to have the keyboard attached to use any full sized USB 3 connections. However, if you are purely going to Windows 8 tablet without connections, or are looking for a super small, super inexpensive Windows 8 notebook/laptop with a touchscreen, this machine seemed like it would be pretty decent.

The battery life is incredible. I bought this for my son for graduation gift. Now my wife is asking for one. I was skeptical at first about the ease of taken off and on the tablet, Great design on and off with no problem's. I am 6'3" and have big hands, its a little cramped to type but can do it. I also added a wireless mouse.

The T100TA-C1-GR is a very good value for basic computing. The included MS Office software makes this setup a deal. This represent my fourth Asus computer purchase and I have been happy with the value and performance of each one. You can believe the long battery life. 10-hours is easy to accomplish with basic programs and surfing.

I do find the screen and keyboard a little small for heavy computing. However I cannot knock the unit for this. It is what it is. A reasonably fast and efficient Tablet/PC.

I wanted a smaller, lighter, more mobile laptop than the one I had. This has all of the advantages of a tablet, but works like a computer. When my husband saw it, he ordered one for himself.
I use it for surfing, Word, and games and it's handled everything I've thrown at it. The battery life is so much better than my other laptop, I can get at least 9 hours on a charge. I had some problems initially with the power switch but I'm better with it now. I haven't had problems detaching and reattaching the parts, you just have to firmly click it into place. The charging cable is a bit short at about 3 ft. There is no CD drive and only one full size USB port, but you can always use a hub or attach an external CD drive.
I was waiting for something this versatile to come out, it's a bonus that the price was so reasonable.

Easy tablet use and fully functional laptop use. Definitely not a gaming device. Not a good purchase if you plan to do any heavy gaming, image processing, or video rendering.

I wanted something for home to look up those very important questions that come up constantly. I use a computer at work every day, but there is some adjustment to a Tablet. However, it has been great and the picture quality is outstanding. I would definitely recommend it.
