The Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera is an advanced DSLR featuring a 23.35MP APS-C CMOS sensor and PRIME III image processor to produce high-resolution still imagery and full HD 1080i/p video with high low-light sensitivity to ISO 51200. Full-resolution continuous shooting is supported up to 8.3 fps for 22 consecutive RAW frames, with a top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec., and the SAFOX11 autofocus system utilizes 27 focus points, with 25 cross-type points, to maintain sharp focus in a quick and accurate manner. Benefitting the image quality is a selectable anti-aliasing filter, which can be turned on or off to either garner the highest resolution and sharpness possible or provide enhanced protection against moiré. Additionally, in-camera Shake Reduction image stabilization renders any K-mount lens stabilized and helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working with greater shutter speeds or longer focal lengths.

The K-3's body design incorporates 92 special seals to render it cold, dust, and weather-resistant and the magnesium alloy cover with stainless steel chassis contribute to overall durability and ruggedness. A 0.95x magnification optical pentaprism viewfinder is incorporated into the body as well as a 3.2" 1,037k-dot LCD monitor for a choice of bright, clear viewing means. Dual SD card slots extend the recording versatility of the camera and FLU memory card support enables wireless image transferring and remote camera control possibilities when in use.

23.35MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and PRIME III Processor
A large 23.35MP APS-C CMOS sensor and PRIME III image processing engine work together to enable high-resolution imaging and full HD video recording with notable low-light sensitivity from ISO 100-51200. The image processor also contributes to a wealth of shooting speed for the camera, including a top full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 8.3 fps for up to 22 consecutive RAW images or 60 JPEGs and a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000 sec. This highly durable, advanced shutter is rated to 200,000 cycles and employs a range of innovative technologies that independently regulate the shutter, mirror, and diaphragm to minimize mirror shock for accurately-render images when shooting at higher frame rates.
Selectable Anti-Aliasing Filter
A unique and innovative mechanism allows you to toggle the anti-aliasing filter's effect either on or off, providing support for both the high-resolution abilities of a filter-less design as well as advanced moiré protection. With the filter in the Off position, the K-3 is more prone to acquiring maximum sharpness, resolution, and detail from an image for the highest attainable image quality. When the filter position is set to On, an anti-aliasing simulator applies microscopic vibrations to the image sensor unit at a sub-pixel level during exposure; working to the same effect as an optical anti-aliasing filter. Having both options available extends the camera's versatility and allows personalized selection of the benefits best-suited to individual applications.
SAFOX11 Autofocus Module
A redesigned SAFOX11 autofocus module has been integrated into the K-3 and employs 27 focus points in order to deliver a metering range of -3 to +20 EV. 25 of the 27 sensors are cross-type, in order to gain the highest precision while focusing, and three of the sensors are dedicated to low-light performance.
Real Time Scene Analysis Metering
The Real Time Scene Analysis System utilizes an 86,000 pixel RGB light-metering sensor with enhanced metering algorithms to increase the accuracy of exposure metering and white balancing as well as aiding the autofocus system.
Full HD 1080i/p Video Recording
Full HD 1920 x 1080 video recording is supported in multiple frame rates, including 60i, 50i, 30p, 25p, and 24p, in the high-quality H.264 format. HD 1280 x 720 video is also supported in 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p, and 24p frame rates. Audio can be recorded along with video using the built-in stereo microphone or, additionally, a 3.5mm microphone terminal is available for use of an external mic. A headphone port is also incorporated into the camera for real time audio monitoring for precise in-camera manipulation of the audio levels. A dedicated switch permits instant transition from still to movie shooting and an HDMI terminal is integrated into the body's design for direct HD output to a television or monitor.
In-Camera Shake Reduction
In-camera sensor-shift type Shake Reduction (SR) works to minimize the appearance of camera shake when using any mounted lens. Ideal for working in low-light conditions or with longer lenses, since the image stabilization is located within the body, both past, legacy lenses as well as current Pentax lenses all receive the benefits of SR.
Body Design
Revolving around a durable magnesium alloy body with stainless steel chassis, the K-3 is fully weather and coldproof due to the inclusion of 92 independent seals. These seals protect the camera from water, fog, snow, sand, and dust for ensured performance in a wide range of conditions.

Two SD memory cards slots are incorporated into the body for greater flexibility and potential capacity when shooting and support both overflow and JPEG/RAW file separation. Support is also availed to dedicated 16GB FLU memory cards, which provides wireless connectivity to the camera for remote adjustment over camera settings, remote live view monitoring, and wireless sharing of files. Eye-Fi wireless cards are supported, too.

Also housed within the body is a bright, low-profile glass pentaprism viewfinder with 0.95x magnification and 100% frame coverage. The glass has been treated with an optimized coating to improve brightness and reflectance for clearer viewing. Additionally, optional interchangeable focusing screens can be used depending on personal preference for critical focusing and composing. A 3.2" 1,037k-dot LCD monitor is available, too, for bright live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation and features an anti-reflective (AR) coating and gapless glass design for greater clarity when viewing.
Other Camera Features

This camera replaced my K20D. It is smaller, lighter, and superior in every respect. Much improved autofocus, very good image quality, great feel, good controls. Very quiet shutter compared to previous Pentax cameras.

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

This is an upgrade from my Pentax K-5 and so far it's been great - as easy to use and even better image quality. So far, I've also been very impressed by the quality of photos taken in low light.

I was fortunate to get this when the year end pricing was very attractive. Plus it came bundled with a battery grip. In addition to being very practical, the grip provides good balance with larger lenses.

B&H order processing was, as usual, prompt and efficient.

I've been looking forward to moving up to a K-3 for a while, and am very happy I did.

Fast focus, quiet shutter, great dynamic range, in-camera shake reduction, weather resistant, rapid fire... essentially top of the class performance for a crop-sensor dSLR. Performance not much difference, in fact, at a price that is a fraction of the cost of outfitting yourself with a full frame camera.

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I am a two system shooter: Canon and Pentax. Pentax is my first love, it has a great history, great ergonomics, and has great value for the price. Especially now, the price of the K3 has dropped to a point where if you shoot pentax, it's worth considering selling your old bodies and buying the K3. The images are shape and have great quality. One knock against Pentax has always been its sports shooting capability. I haven't tested the K3 for sports yet. But it's gotta be better than my K7 which was not very good for ball sports. So if you shoot pentax go ahead and get the K3.

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

The K3 Pentax with battery grip is another excellent example of Pentax's superior quality and performance, that is offered at a considerably lower cost than their closest competitors. The quality of the build is top notch and the clarity of the photos is superb. Coupled with the Pentax SMC P 31mm f/1.8 Limited lens, the Pentax SMC DA 15mm 1:4 ED AL Limited lens, or the Pentax Zoom Telephoto 60-250mm f/4 DA* SDM lens, you have a light weight and broad ranged example of precision, speed, quietness, and clarity. Pentax K3 rules. As they have for years, Pentax with their superior technology. dependability, and affordable prices have knocked it out of the park with the K3. It is an ideal upgraded addition to my K7 and K5II Pentax DSLR's.

Added to my Pentax stable, giving my K7 a well deserved break. Quieter, clearer, and faster than the K7. Programmable settings and controls make it easier and faster to use. Pentax has done it again. No other DSLR camera that I know of can offer the features and reliability that the K3 does, even at twice the price. The weather proofing is icing on the cake.

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Everything about this camera screams exceptional. I like all the new features very much, especially the dual mem. cards. I have one major complaint. There are seemingly discrepancies in what I call color accuracy. And I've had two incidences of the camera not properly metering before firing. That said, these are things I would hope forthcoming firmware updates will address. All and all I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I've had my K-3 for a little over a week and the more I get into it the more I really like it. I'm coming from a Pentax K-50 so the K-3 is similar in some respects, mainly the menus and basic handling. The K-3, however, is light years ahead of the very good K-50 in so many ways. The shutter is really quiet and the auto focus is spot on with very little hunting even in dimly lit settings. The auto white balance is very good and very accurate under scenes with multiple lighting sources with different color temps. I'm not into videos much so I can't rate the video performance but if and when I do decide to shoot a couple of videos it should do pretty well. My digital video camera has for several years been a Panasonic FZ35 bridge camera and will continue to be.I think Pentax has definitely produced a fantastic APS-C sensor winner.

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I recently upgraded from the K10D. It had been a few years and was time. I had been watching this camera body ever since it came out and have to say that when the time was right and the promotion offered was excellent, I took the plunge.

Everything about it has been fantastic so far, autofocus speed improvements, low light / high ISO, image / color quality, ease of use, quiet, great build quality, etc.

I'm excited to use this more on some upcoming projects and so far have to say that I have not been disappointed.

B&H was extremely quick and easy to use. I had everything I ordered within a few days.

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I finally got my eyes wrapped around this body and the DA 18 - 270 zoom. (They're old.) This combination is as sharp as my 70D and the accompanying EFS 18 - 135, or better.

I really like both of these cameras, but if you are looking for a new system, before you buy, take a good look at Pentax K3

It is ergonomically laid out and packs a lot of function in a small space.

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I shoot mainly landscapes and this camera is perfect for me. The metering works great, almost every time. If I need to use exposure compensation, it's readily available. The dials easily allow me to open or close the aperture, or adjust the shutter speed. I upgraded from a K-30, and learning this new one has been really easy - if anything, the controls are more intuitive than before. The quicker frames/second seem to make shooting HDR handheld easier and produce sharper images. I can't really think of anything to complain about. I was concerned that the additional weight would bother me, but I often carry the camera like a messenger bag when hiking, and with the heavier body, it rides flatter and more comfortably on my flank, and the lens has less tendency to creep. And it's weather-sealed - one reason I keep coming back to Pentax.I have enjoyed having the battery grip more than I'd anticipated, especially for shooting vertical formats, as others have observed. I plan to buy an additional lithium battery, though, since it will be lighter and more compact for hiking.

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Last August I upgraded to this camera from a K-5, retaining my K-5 as a second and backup camera as needed. I normally shoot landscape photography for which either camera is excellent. However, I also at times shoot indoor events and trade shows in dim lighting conditions. In that environment, my K-5 was at times a bit lacking in its ability to hit an accurate focus. That problem is completely gone with the new K-3. I recently shot a conference/trade show using the K-3 and loved every minute of it. The camera focuses with confidence and just "nails it". I shoot RAW and process files in Lightroom. The image fine detail and sharpness from this camera, especially when using high quality lenses, is pretty staggering. I attribute this in large part to the fact that there is no anti-aliasing filter applied to the sensor. This added sharpness, combined with the higher resolution sensor should allow more latitude to zoom by cropping without suffering too much IQ penalty. I can't wait to invest in a quality long prime (would love to own a DA*300mm) to really test the camera's limits. I'm sure it won't disappoint. In addition to its solid image quality and focusing performance, this camera is solid in its build, has great ergonomics, isn't overly large compared to its similarly specified competitors, and has a great feature set. I very seldom shoot video, so if there are shortcomings in that particular area as I've read others report, it doesn't matter to me. For my use as a still camera, the K-3 is really hard to beat in my opinion, especially for the price.

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I have owned more DSLRs than I can count including a Canon 1Ds, 5D, 5DII, 7D, 6D, etc. I also used a Nikon D7000 briefly along with a Pentax K-5. While I still have a full-frame Canon system, the K-3 is as close to perfect as any camera body I've used. For the price, it is outstanding. I just really enjoy shooting it. The build quality is exquisite and the weather sealing is appreciated. The operation is really intuitive. The idea of Hyper shift program and hyper manual and the green button metering set/reset is brilliant. The switch allowing the user to choose to use the lock on exposure mode dial is also genius. The viewfinder is the best I've used on APS-C nice and contrasty with a little bit "gritty" screen that helps with manual focusing. The compact size is perfect, while the included grip that was packaged with the camera makes it work with a larger lens like the DA 60-250. I have no complaints about the focusing, which is much improved over the K-5. Plenty of cross top AF points that lock quickly. Extremely adequate high frame rate and responsiveness too. I really like the DNG raw format as well for easy access to Lightroom. You don't feel like the All modern DSLRs are capable of great images. I really like Canon colors, but I do think the Sony sourced sensor in the K-3 is great. I like the noise rendition, which to my eye looks like scanned transparency film. The dynamic range is also superior to several previous APS-C bodies I've owned. The lack of AA filter is not an issue, but rather a bonus. The only drawback that I see to this camera at all for the type of commercial work I do, is the difference in depth of field with a full frame camera when shooting portraits. Another huge issue for me is the lack of support for tethering, which is critical for working with art directors when shooting food or product. The FluCard wireless may be a solution for this as I just need a small JPEG to show framing and styling. Other than these two issues and getting used to the differences in Pentax color I could easily make this my main camera for professional work. The K-3 is just one of those cameras that you want to shoot. My Canons are great and real workhorses (over 800,000 clicks on the Canons), but they have never excited me like the Pentax. The Pentax design ethic suits me better. I wish more and better Pentax SDM lens options where available as the screw drive lenses, while they work well, are rather noisy, which is a shock after shooting Canon USM. The Pentax 60-250 SDM lens I have is very quiet and sharp as well. I wish Pentax would release a full-frame in this same body. That would be perfect.

If I had known about the K3 before I bought my 70D, I would have bought it first. I used Ricoh cameras, the XR-M and XR-P film cameras back in the day and thought they were great. The K3 continues that tradition of quality.

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I bought this camera to jump into digital after years using film. I love all of the options to be creative and compensate for difficult photo conditions. I do wish it was a full frame camera. I've been very happy with the quality of pictures and look forward to purchasing a good quality large lens to compliment the camera. Thanks Pentax!

Comments about Pentax K-3 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Just got this camera last week and I love it. Great user interface, outstanding image quality, quality build, feels great in the hands especially with the included battery grip which made this purchase a no brainer. I haven't taken a huge amount of photos yet, but from what I've taken the quality exceeds my trusty old Pentax K20D and the color and sharpness is better than my nieces Canon 70D I used exclusively for some photo shoots at the 48 hour Film Project in Los Angeles in September. If I had a complaint to make it would be at Pentax for the high price for their HD DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR lens at $. I'd like to purchase it, but Sigma's 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM lens is a far better lens and deal at $. Why would I spend nearly $ more for a slower lens? Come on Pentax, you can do better than that! Time for a major price reduction.
