The Canon EF Mount 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens from Zeiss is a standard focal length premium lens optimized for full-format DSLR camera sensors. A wide maximum aperture combined with Zeiss' renowned optical glass and T* lens coating allow the 55mm f/1.4 to transmit an impressive degree of detail and color rendition even in low light situations. A floating element design equips the lens for consistent image quality, minimal aberration and field distortion throughout the focus range.

Complementing the premium optics of the 55mm f/1.4 Otus lens is a metal lens housing as evidence of a build quality that matches the lens's imaging prowess. Additionally, an all-metal focusing mechanism with an extended rotation angle allows precise manual focusing from 20" to infinity. Borrowing from their cinema lenses, Zeiss labels the focus scale with highly-visible yellow markings. The rubberized focus ring improves tactile feedback and helps to enable exact focus placement.

Comments about Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens for Canon EF Mount:

A lot of attention when people see you carry around this big but ONLY a 55mm lens. Maunal Focus is what keeps this lens out of sport and animals. and Maunal Focus keeps your eye busy on object if you were so used to Auto Focus. Make sure you can deal with that and be Ready if you are a AF guy. Other than that, you are not going to find the Sharpness, rich color else where. If $4000 is what you are willing to spend, you will have the best 55mm lens on your hand in today's market, and maybe the best 55mm lens for another 10 years. some time I asked myself, if I were use that $4000 to buy the other canon red line lens, I can have 2 to 3 more lens on my hand. but as soon as you have that Otus on your hand, you just can't be anymore happier with any other lens.

Comments about Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I would say this would be the best in it's class.
Sharp corner to corner even when wide open.
Little to no barrel distortion at all.
Contrast is.. contrasty and colors are rich.

CA control is not stella wide open and is a heavy beast to carry around.

Just in case you haven't figured it out, this is a manual lens. It does not have auto focus. If you do not know how to manual focus, there is no way you can enjoy using this lens.

Comments about Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens for Canon EF Mount:

Let's get the potential detractors for some buyers out of the way ... this lens is manual-focus only (not a good lens for action). It is heavy and really,.., really expensive (and the expense might continue if you insure your items). Like many of the other newer Zeiss lenses, the rest is pure optical reverie and exhalation.

The build of the lens is superb, no plastic here, all metal and glass - contributing to its hefty weight. The rubberized focus ring is quite comfortable and the nearly 270-degree throw feels smooth, solid, and precise - no drifting. One thing worth mentioning however, if wearing gloves, sometimes it's a bit more difficult to get traction on the rubberized focus ring as compared to the grooved metal rings as found on their 135mm f/2 APO.

The new Zeiss' optical performance is beyond reproach, save for some vignetting while wide open, but that pretty much clears up by f/2. Otherwise, it is practically aberration & distortion free with a sharpness (even wide open) that is truly remarkable. The Zeiss performance reminded me, in terms of optical performance, of Canon's TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II or EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM - arguably the very best in their stable.

The nine rounded-blades of the aperture keep bokeh and out-of-focus areas beautifully rendered even when the aperture is clamped down significantly. Color saturation is incredible. In this review I have added a few photos taken wide-open.

I have been renting quite a few Zeiss lenses lately and have dedicated a set with more examples of those lenses on that flick-site under the user name - Fret Spider. Please enjoy! I had rented this lens and put it through its paces with much, much enjoyment. While I could try to sell everyone of the opinion that a manual-focus lens connects the photographer more their camera, it is mostly a personal preference. My only real suggestion is rent this lens and find out if this shooting style suits you. If manual lenses are your thing and you have the funds, this lens will not disappoint in any way.

        Happy shooting!
