The black Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is a compact digital camera that features a 16 megapixel Micro Four Thirds Digital Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor to produce high resolution imagery with notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 25600. The combination of these two technologies affords a wealth of detail and clarity in imagery and also supports full HD 1080p video recording at 60 or 24 fps in AVCHD or MP4 formats.

Both a tilting electronic viewfinder and a tilting touchscreen LCD monitor are integrated into the camera's design for working from a variety of angles. The EVF has a 2,764k-dot resolution and supports tilting 90° upward while the 3.0" 1,040k-dot LCD monitor is capable of tilting 45° upward and 80° downward. Its touchscreen functionality enables more intuitive playback and menu navigation for employing a host of camera settings and features, including control over the built-in wireless connectivity. This function pairs with the Panasonic Image App for remote control over camera settings and for instant transference of imagery between the camera and a mobile device.

Amongst other features housed within the GX7 is in-camera MEGA O.I.S. image stabilization, which helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake with any lens. Also benefitting image sharpness and clarity is the Light Speed AF system that utilizes a contrast-detection method for acquiring focus in a precise and fast manner, making it ideal for working with moving subjects. If working with manual focus, focus peaking is available as an aid for determining focus based on edges of contrast within the scene.

Included with the camera is the black Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II APSH. MEGA O.I.S. lens, which is a standard zoom lens providing a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 28-84mm. The lens integrates two aspherical elements into its construction to minimize chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range and also reduce the overall size of the lens. It has an internal focusing system and uses a stepping motor to provide smooth and quiet performance that is well-suited to video applications.

16MP Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
A 16 megapixel Micro Four Thirds Digital Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor work together to produce high resolution imagery that exhibits a great deal of clarity, detail, and overall impressive image quality. The processing power affords heightened sensitivity to ISO 25600 with minimal noise for enhanced use in low-light conditions. The Venus Engine also provides a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including the ability to record up 5 fps in full resolution, 40 fps using an electronic shutter, and continuous shooting at 4.3 fps with full-time AF.
Full HD Video Recording
The 16MP Micro Four Thirds sensor also supports full HD 1080p video recording in both 60 and 24 fps at a maximum bit rate of 24 Mbps. Both the high quality AVCHD and the Internet-friendly MP4 formats can be used depending on the intended output and editing workflow used and stereo sound is recorded with videos using a built-in microphone. Full-time continuous AF and tracking AF modes can be used during recording and exposure settings can be manually adjusted using either shutter speed or aperture controls. Touch AF and Touch AE controls also prove to be effective means for modifying the focus and exposure settings while recording video and focus peaking is ideal when working with manual focus.
Tilting EVF and Monitor Design
To better aid in live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation, both a tilting electronic viewfinder and rear LCD monitor are integrated into the design of the GX7. The EVF, or LVF (Live View Finder), features a 2,764k-dot resolution and approx. 100% color reproduction using the field sequential system for clear visibility in all conditions. It has a 90° upward tilting mechanism that permits easier viewing from low working angles. Additionally, Eye Sensor AF can be used to automatically begin auto focusing as soon as the viewfinder detects use, which greatly benefits working in a more spontaneous manner.

A large 3.0" 1,040k-dot touchscreen LCD is also available for viewing and features a tilting design that permits the monitor to be tilted 45° upward or 80° downward to benefit working from both high and low angles. The front panel of the monitor is attached directly to the In Cell Touch LCD without a gap between in order to reduce surface reflections and improve visibility of the screen in bright conditions. The touch functionality of the monitor also enhances efficiency by allowing for a more natural method of adjusting camera settings and navigating throughout the menu structure. Combining use of both the viewfinder and the touchscreen is Touch Pad, which allows you to use the EVF for monitoring along with the touch control functions of the rear LCD.
In-Camera Image Stabilization
MEGA O.I.S. in-camera image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working with lenses that do not incorporate image stabilization. This added benefit enables sharp low-light shooting with any lens and is especially useful for handheld shooting with longer, telephoto lenses.
Focusing Performance
An array of focusing technologies are available to help ensure sharp focus when working in all shooting modes with any type of subject matter. Light Speed AF, a contrast-detection AF system, is used to intelligently and accurately determine critical focus in quick and efficient manner. The speed of this system is ideal for photographing and tracking fast-moving subjects in a variety of lighting conditions. Low Light AF is also available to help determine critical focus in dimly-lit (-4 EV) conditions without the need of an AF assist lamp.

If working with manual focus, focus peaking is available to provide a more objective means for determining exacting focus based on highlighting edges of contrast within the scene. Pin-Point AF allows for live view images to be magnified from 3-10x during shooting for homing in on tight details and One-Shot AF allows focus to be acquired quickly and automatically with manual focusing abilities available for greater focus refinement and creative control. Full-area focus makes use of the intuitive touchscreen design and allows you to tap anywhere within the frame to set focus and AFF mode acquires autofocus as normal and then can reset focus if the determined target moves.
Built-In Wireless Connectivity
Wireless connectivity is integrated into the GX7 to enabled remote transferring and control of the camera from mobile devices when using the Panasonic Image App. Zoom and focus can be controlled through the app as well as remote releasing of the shutter. Images can be sent directly to mobile devices for instant sharing online and NFC (Near Field Communication) technology allows for a simplified method of connecting the camera to the mobile device.
Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II APSH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens
The included 14-42mm zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 28-84mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit working in everyday situations. MEGA O.I.S. image stabilizations helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working in low-light conditions and with longer focal lengths and an internal focusing system with a stepping motor promotes smooth, quiet performance that is ideal for video work. The optical design of the lens integrates two aspherical elements to minimize chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range and multi-coated lens elements reduce lens flare and ghosting to provide richer overall contrast and clarity.
Camera Design
The camera body is constructed from die-cast magnesium alloy to provide rigidity and durability while still remaining light in weight. It features a contoured rubberized grip for greater stability and the tilting design of the EVF and LCD monitor facilitates more natural handheld shooting positions. Both a pop-up flash and a hot shoe are also integrated into the camera's design as well as front and rear manual control dials for intuitive adjustment of crucial camera settings.
Other Camera Features
  • Silent Mode switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic operation and disables all sounds and AF assist lamps for greater inconspicuousness while shooting.
  • A top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec. aids in capturing fast-moving subjects and working with wider apertures in bright conditions.
  • Time Lapse Shot automatically records sequential images over a set period of time, which can then be automatically combined in order to produce a time lapse video.
  • Stop Motion Animation permits the creation of stop motion videos by automatically sequencing frames into a video file without needing to use an editing program.
  • Highlight Shadow control allows adjustment of the highlight and shadow details when working in live view by using the front and rear dials; three preset patterns are available and three custom profiles can be created.
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range) automatically composites several images of varying exposures in order to gain greater highlight and shadow details and an extensive middle range of tones.
  • Touch AE allows you to select the point within the image where an exposure metering is taken; ideal for backlit subjects or high contrast scenes.
  • A Level Gauge can be used to help ensure level horizons and plumb verticals. The gauge will automatically switch orientation when shooting in the vertical format.
  • Monochrome Filter mode works to simulate the effects of black and white color contrast filters, such as yellow, orange, red, and green filters, to enhance the appearance of monochromatic images in-camera.
  • Creative Control mode facilitates the creation of creatively enhanced imagery by providing 22 different filter effects. These filter settings can be adjusted manually as well to suit individual images.
  • Creative Panorama mode automatically stitches together multiple images in order to realize one wide-spanning horizontal or vertical image.
  • Multi Exposure mode allows up to four distinct exposures to be made and layered within a single frame for unique, creative effects.
  • Clear Retouch makes it possible to remove unwanted objects, figures, or other aspects of an image by simply tracing over them on the touchscreen monitor.
  • A supersonic wave filter protects the sensor from dust and is able to vibrate approximately 80,000 times per second in order to effectively repel dust and other particles.
  • Language support: English and Spanish.

I upgraded from a panny GH1 to the GX7 and I am glad I did. The only hesitation I had was that I was tempted by the Oly E-m1 splashproofing. I sure wish Panasonic would add this feature to their M4/3 cameras. I take my camera out hiking almost every weekend. Tough lighting, tough conditions. The flip up EVF and LCD make it easier to protect the GX7 from the elements(and get the spectacular low shots without groveling in the mud), and then I toss it in a zip lock with reusable dessicant when not actively shooting, on wet days. I was never happy with the GH1 color rendition, no matter how much I played with settings or in PS. GX7 is much better at grabbing colors and really showing a depth of correct color, in addition to the extra clarity. And what can be pulled out of deep shadow in RAW images is nothing short of amazing. I will continue to use the awesome 1.7x 20 Panny lens, which will be even better with the in-body stabilization. I have the new 3.5x14-140 panny lens on order, to knock a half pound off my previous rig. 1.5 pounds for a high quality sensor camera WITH a 28-280 zoom lens! That is a phenomenal hiking setup. Worth dealing with the bag and dessicant for wet weather. I am just starting to play with the features. Pan is pretty decent, although a bit of learning curve and some restrictions. Set a custom spot on the dial to vertical pan setting and pan horizontally with the camera on end to boost panning resolution. Search on "GX7 tips and tricks" and custom settings for good ideas of what you can do with this adaptable camera. I just set it on full auto the first hike I used it, since I got it only the day before, and it did a respectable job on full intelligent mode. But I will have a lot of fun exploring all of its extensive capabilities, with plenty of function buttons to make it all handy. Another cool trick is looking through the EVF, which turns off the LCD, but you can set it to still use the LCD as a touch panel for grabbing focus spots with your thumb, while looking through the EVF.

I purchased this to repace my GX1 and gain the integrated viewfinder. The optional viewfinder was the biggest weakness of the GX1. On the plus side for the GX7, the controls, size, image quality are all excellent. But no amount of diopter adjustment could give me an acceptably clear image in the viewfinder. SInce the actual images and the view in the LCD was sharp, I initially thought I had a defective unit. After many tests, talking to Panasonic's technical folks, and digging through the detailed specs on the international site, it turns out the the LFV on this camera is significanly lower resolution than many of their other current and former cameras (e.g. G5, G6, LVF2 on the GX1) For a high end camera this is very surprising.IF you are not using the viewfinder, I'd rate the camera 5 stars, but there are more cost effective solutions (You are paying for the viewfinder). Likewise if you find a low resolution image in the LVF sufficient, then it is a fine camera. For me the disapointing viewfinder is a deal breaker in a $[$] camera.B&H's excellent return policy saved the day.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GX7 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Black):

This camera is as perfect as a camera gets for me! The Construction is top notch with a cast metal frame. It has a real quality feel to it. The GX7 focus peaking implementation is the best I have seen. The Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) is bright and adjustable. It is the only viewfinder of all the micro 4/3 cameras that allows me to see the entire image without vignetting while wearing my glasses. The GX7 is one of the most ergonomic cameras I have used. I bought a silver GX7 when they were first released. I like the camera so much I bought the black GX7 as a second body. The image quality is outstanding!

I haven't used this for very long, but the more I use it the more I love this camera. I have a 8 year old Canon Rebel XSI that I still use but wanted a smaller travel camera. I love the size of this camera and the quality of pictures. Any fault in pictures so far is mine as I have not really studied all that this camera can do. I look forward to spending a lot of time learning the details of this camera. The only drawback is that the auto flash is not really auto. You have to hit the pop up button for it to engage. That is the only reason for 4 stars.

Years ago i was shooting with Nikon F801 (Film Days :-)) and also developed and printed by my own. then life took me to other places but slowly i started again this time with digital cameras like Pana FZ35/38. now I wanted a quality camera, compact, capable, with interchangeable lenses ETC. in short i wanted my old camera but smaller...The GX7 has a nice ISO range and comes with plenty of features that are really convenient. The MFT standard and mirroless body makes it compact and easy to carry plus a nice selection of lenses to choose from. it has almost any feature i wanted but the most important thing is that it lets you work manually and with some tweaks of the function buttons very fluently. in short i carry and use it all the time. i get a very good results (change the kit lens as fast as you can afford...) and having a lot of fun while shooting which for me its the key point for a camera!

I was deciding between this camera and a regular DSLR, but went with this because SLR cameras are just too big for me. This camera is amazinnng! Super fast focus. Looks gorgous aesthetically and comfortable to hold in hands. The built-in WiFi/NFC capability is so convenient. One recommendation: get some spare batteries. Overall, highly recommended!!

I've had the GX7 for about 8 months now, and it's done almost everything I've asked it to do. It's light, small and fast. I can carry the kit lens and a 45-200 plus batteries, etc in a shoulder bag all day long - which I could't say about the Nikon gear that this is replacing.

The pictures look just fine on a PC or TV screen, which is the only places anybody ever sees the pictures I've taken. (I'm primarily shooting family and vacation shots.)

Other reviewers have complained about reflections on the EVF, which occasionally has been an issue; I added the eye cup, but in bright sun I take my glasses off and kick the diopter adjustment lever up a couple of notches. I haven't noticed the tearing that other reviewers have described. I've had no other issues with the EVF: the lag is short enough that I've even shot a few sporting events and caught the action that I was looking for.

The only real beef I've got is the built-in flash; the pictures look flat with the flash on - more so than with other built-in flashes I've used. I've tried pulling the flash head back with my finger to bounce it off the ceiling, but in many situations it's not strong enough to light the subject when used like that. I almost always rely on natural light, so it's not a huge deal, but it would be nice to have the option of a little fill flash from time to time. I guess I'm spoiled by the Nikon CLS system, which I'm just beginning to appreciate now.

Everything else is good; the GX7 is pretty close to the perfect travel camera; the way it handles, the features, choice of lenses are all just right. I even like the way that it doesn't look like a serious camera, so I can sneak it into places that don't allow "pro" cameras. All in all, the best camera I've ever owned - for my purposes.

I bought the Lumix GX7 camera to complement my Canon 7D Mark II for those times when I don't want to carry so much heavy equipment. It was a complete surprise to me how much I like the GX7. Not only is it small and light, but it takes exceptional photos, especially in high contrast lighting. Every time I use it, I'm just in awe of the quality and ease of use. I think I'll be using it a lot more than I initially intended!

Comments about Lumix DMC-GX7 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Silver):

I wanted a quality camera, with a nice size sensor one step above the point and shoot cameras but not as expensive as a full frame digital SLR camera and this is the happy medium. It has a nice ISO range, comparable to those of higher end cameras and comes with plenty of features that are really convenient, like the tilting LCD touch screen, the pop up flash, the flip-up viewfinder and the wireless connectivity. You can also use your smartphone as a remote control (that works with my Galaxy S4, not sure about others). The four thirds standard and mirroless body makes it compact and easy to carry. I droped one star only because I wish the included lens had a better zoom.

I love this camera's size and versatility. I purchased it as a 'street' camera and it works very we'll that way. But I now take it everywhere, inside and out, for 90% of all my photography needs. I still rely on a big DSLR for those grand landscape shots, but when I save up for the right lens, I will not need to lug it around anymore.

My only issue – and it's human error – is when I go to spin the rear wheel with my right thumb, I press too hard and change the current function. I'll practice restraint, I promise.

Lastly, I love the tilt viewfinder and the camera's overall look. It's old school, it feels just right.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GX7 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Silver):

I was used to carrying my Canon 5DmkII everywhere with me as my main camera, but then I read more and more about mirrorless micro4/3 systems so I decided to try it out.My main decision was between the Sony a6000 and Panasonic Gx7. I went with the GX7 because it seemed to have more fun features, despite having a smaller sensor. The touchscreen is a big feature that is missing on the a6000.I've had the Gx7 for about a month and in that time, I don't think I've touched the 5D. The GX7 is just so much more fun. The built in Wifi, touchscreen, scene modes, filters effects, silent electronic shutter, tiltable EVF, and the tiny size, are all things that I didn't have on the 5D. I know it's not an apples to apples comparison, but when it comes to having fun with photography, the GX7 blows the 5D away. When it comes to pure image quality, I do get better results from the full frame sensor on the 5D, but for casual use the Gx7 isn't far off. I have photos from both the Gx7 and the 5D on my flickr page and I bet most people can't tell the difference: https://www.flickr.com/photos/selectbThe smaller sensor actually makes it a good for getting more of the shot in focus. Handy for video. Here are some things that I think could be better with the GX7:1. Faster wifi mode connection. For some reason it takes a while to connect and disconnect.2. Longer battery life.3. More secure battery compartment4. I have smaller hands, but the buttons on the back could be a little bigger even for me.

Compared to the GH3 and Olympus E-P5 hands on for several weeks. Slightly lower image noise and better OIS (using 14-140mm Power OIS zoom lens) than GH3. Slightly better overall low-light performance than GH3 and E-P5. Much better auto white balance in low light than E-P5. Easy-to-use, powerful camera that does everything I need.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GX7 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Black):

Camera is good at certain optimal settings, in indoors image quality sucks after ISO800. It has performed very poorly in video focussing too, on given optimal lighting situation this camera focus systems works very well, but in indoors like birthday parties etc.. this camera constantly hunting for the focus. I bought this camera hoping to take very good pictures for my son's birthday, but it has ruined most of the pictures and video. At birthday this camera was handled by one of my friend who is very professional at taking pictures (he himself owns panasonic GH3). Refrain your self from this little camera.

This is the third Panasonic camera I've owned and they have become my favorite. While I've only had the GX7 for a few days I can say it's the best one so far. Test pics I've taken are excellent. I'm still learning how to use it with the 45-200 lens I purchased, and how to work the touch screen so that my settings remain set. It's just a matter of time and scaling the learning curve. So far I'm loving it. The build quality is the best of any Panasonic I've owned. I won't be using the built-in flash so no comment there. My only gripe is that the Fn1 button is easily activated by accident when shooting. I purchased this camera to take daytime candid pictures in Thailand. I've only tested it on stationary objects in the neighborhood here in the USA, but I can see this will be the camera I take to capture candid smiles in The Land of Smiles.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GX7 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Silver):

I shoot with this camera as a walk around street shooter and for weddings and events.
I love the size, the easy programming allowing me flexibility in lens choice, I like the Pany lenses I have and the 4/3 system is great for adopting other lens types.
The picture quality and color rendition were a pleasant surprise and I get quite usable pictures up to ISO 3200. Probably not higher than that though.
The two things I don't like are the short battery life. For a serious day of shooting you need to take a couple of spares. Also, sometimes I get into a mode where my nose moves the focal point from the center by swiping the touch screen accidentally. Its a lovely touch screen and I have a great nose, but sometimes the two clash. i then have to take time to fumble around to change it back.
Otherwise, its great to have a gig, use a fairly small camera bag with the GX7, a zoom and several fixed lenses weighing just a few pounds and taking up so much less room. Also, it takes pretty nice video and except that there is no provision to add an external mike, the video quality itself is very good. The in camera stabilization also works pretty well, not as good from what I've seen the Olys, but a noticeable plus. Its a good camera.

A light camera and lens with a cheap plastic feel. Seems to operate well.

Only if you are making images in full daylight is this camera worth the effort due to the slow speed lens.
Compared to the Fujifilm XE2 the Lumix image is soft and lacks detail. The moveable finder and monitor are nice but do not make up for limits this camera imposes.
B&H's service was outstanding from purchase through the return.
