The Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 Digital Camera from Sony is a compact, point-and-shoot camera that features a large 20.2MP, 1", Exmor R, CMOS sensor producing high resolution still imagery and Full HD 1080i/p video. This sensor's design utilizes backside-illuminated technology to improve clarity and image quality when working in dimly-lit conditions as well as increase the sensitivity to ISO 12800. Updating from the successful RX1 and RX100 digital cameras, the RX10 houses the new BIONZ X image processor. The processor provides impressive performance speeds such as 10 fps continuous shooting as well as an extended tonal range with low-noise and smooth color gradations.

The built-in, Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T*, 8.3x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-200mm, covering abroad range of focal lengths to provide versatile, multi-functional shooting from one zoom lens. A constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 is effective in low light and provides shallow depth of field focus control. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization is also available to help minimize the effects of camera shake when working in dimly-lit conditions and with greater zoom magnifications. The lens also features 7 aspherical elements to minimize aberrations and distortion and Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating, which helps to reduce surface reflections, lens flare, and ghosting in order to produce imagery that is rich in contrast and clarity.

A new Direct Drive, Supersonic Wave Motor (SSM) provides fast and smooth autofocus action while Eye AF enables precise eye-detection focusing with confirmation that a subject's eye is in focus even if their head is partially turned. Flexible Spot areas allow precise focus placement, and Lock-on AF keeps focus locked on a moving subject, even if that subject leaves the frame momentarily. Seamless close-up shooting is also supported, which no longer requires the need to switch to a dedicated macro mode, for focusing on subjects as close as 11.8".

For image composition and playback, the RX10 features a large 3.0", 1228K-dot, Xtra Fine LCD monitor with a tilting design to better serve working from high and low angles. WhiteMagic technology is incorporated into the display to increase the effective brightness of the screen. Also, the XGA OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder integrates four aspherical elements for sharp eye-level composition. An automatic eye-sensor recognizes when an eye is at the viewfinder and illuminates the EVF while turning off the LCD.

Full HD 1080p video is supported in multiple frame rates and in both AVCHD format and MP4. A firmware update now provides the RX10 with video capture in the XAVC S format at 60p/30p/24p and 120p frame rates. A built-in stereo microphone and an external mic jack are provided as is a headphone jack from audio monitoring. Professional features such as full manual exposure control and uncompressed off-camera recording are also supported.

Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC (Near Field Connectivity) allow for easy wireless connections to smartphones and tablets in order to transfer images for sharing as well as to use your smartphone as a remote control via the free Sony PlayMemories app.

The compact magnesium alloy body of the RX-10 is moisture and dust resistant. It offers a built-in pop-up flash as well as the Sony Multi-Interface shoe for connecting flashes, microphones, lights, monitors, and other accessories. A multi-compatibility card slot enables the use of SD series, micro-SD series, and Memory Stick memory cards. A selectable click or click-less manual control ring on the lens lets you adjust numerous camera settings without taking your eye from the image and customizable buttons provides fast access to the camera settings that you need most.

20.2MP 1" Exmor R CMOS Sensor
The large, 20.2 megapixel, 1" Exmor R, CMOS sensor features backside-illuminated technology to enhance its low-light capabilities to an expanded ISO 12800 while still retaining vivid clarity. Using Sony's Column A/D Conversion, images are rendered with impressive image quality and smooth gradations between tones and colors due to the marked reduction in apparent noise.
New BIONZ X Image Processor
Also benefitting the image quality, as well as overall camera performance, is the new BIONZ X image processor. It faithfully reproduces details and rich tones with lower image noise than was previously possible. Performance speed is also impressive including full-resolution continuous shooting up to 10 fps, high-speed auto focusing and Full HD 1080i/p video recording. Still images can be recorded in JPEG or RAW file formats or both simultaneously.
Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 8.3x Optical Zoom Lens
The built-in Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-200mm, covering wide-angle to full telephoto perspectives to suit working in a wide variety of situations. The fast constant f/2.8 maximum aperture enables enhanced low-light capabilities as well as greater control over focus placement for selective focus imagery. The lens also features 7 aspheric elements for reduced aberrations and a Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating to help minimize lens flare and ghosting in order to produce imagery with rich contrast and clarity.
Built-In Wireless and NFC Connectivity
Built-in wireless connectivity enables the RX10 to instantly transfer imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing with social networking sites, via email, and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible Android mobile devices; no complex set-up is required. This technology when used with the free Sony PlayMemories Mobile app also provides the ability to use Smart Remote Control, which provides for remote shutter release that is controlled by a smart device.
Full HD 1080p Video Recording with Stereo Sound
Full HD 1920 x 1080 video recording is supported in multiple frames rates, including 60p, 60i, and 24p. When recording in Full HD, the AVCHD Ver. 2.0 codec is used for highly detailed image quality that translates well to editing and sharing on HDTVs. Recording in the Internet-friendly MP4 format is also supported in 1440 x 1080 and 640 x 480 sizes at 30 fps. Manual exposure control is available in video mode. Sound is recorded during filming using the built-in stereo microphone, or additionally, an external microphone can be used in conjunction with the multi interface shoe. A headphone jack allows you to monitor sound directly from the camera and a built-in HDMI output terminal provides direct connection to your HDTV, computer, or external recorder for real-time uncompressed video recording. Firmware updates for the RX10 now enable shooting 60p/30p/24p and 120p movies in the XAVC S format which supports higher 50 Mbit/s bit rate. Slow motion 120p capture is supported at 1280 x 720.
High-Resolution LCD Monitor
For live view monitoring, image playback and review, and menu navigation, a 3.0" 1228K-dot LCD monitor is integrated into the camera body and features a tilting design to promote easier use from high and low angles. The screen can tilt approximately 84° up and 45° down, giving a wide range of viewing angles. The LCD also employs WhiteMagic technology, which enhances the brightness of the display for easier use in bright conditions. Real-time image adjustment can be seen on the monitor and Grid Display and Peaking can be customized for better image control.
XGA OLED Viewfinder
See spectacular clarity, contrast, and detail in every scene, regardless of conditions, on the built-in, bright, high-resolution OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder. Four dual-sided aspherical lenses provide a big, 33º view angle and maintain excellent edge-to-edge visibility of the electronic viewfinder. An eye-sensor on the viewfinder senses when your eye is at the finder and illuminates it while simultaneously turning off the LCD monitor.
Smooth High Speed Autofocus
Aided by the rapid throughput of the BIONZ X image processor, auto focusing on the RX10 is fast and accurate. The Direct Drive SSM (Super Sonic Wave AF Motor) provides fast and smooth autofocus action, and Flexible Spot frames enable versatility and precision when choosing your focus spots.
Precise Autofocus Tracking and New Eye EF Function
Lock-on Autofocus precisely focuses on moving subjects by continuously adjusting target frame size based on its recognition of subject characteristics. Even when a subject goes out of frame temporarily, tracking resumes at the moment that it is recaptured after re-entering the frame. Advanced Eye Detection technology creates Eye AF Function which detects and focuses on the subject's eye even if the head is turned slightly.
Close-up Focusing
Close-up shooting is seamless and no switching to macro mode is needed. The minimum focus distance for the RX10 is a constant 11".
Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization works to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working in low-light conditions or with greater zoom magnifications. The system can counter the effects of both vertical and horizontal movements, and, furthermore, Active 3-Way stabilization adds digital rolling control that balances both clockwise and counter-clockwise movements while recording videos.
Diffraction-Reducing Technology
This maintains outstanding clarity by applying aperture-appropriate filter processing to suppress and compensate for diffraction - a phenomenon that can otherwise limit photographic resolution and cause points of light to appear blurred, especially in images that have been shot using a small aperture (large f-number) setting.
Detail Reproduction Technology
By minimizing digital artifacts that tend to overemphasize hard outlines and rough edges when pictures are reproduced, detail reproduction technology makes images noticeably more natural-looking in detail, texture, and dimension.
Area-specific Noise Reduction
Noise reduction, even in images shot in low light, is individually adjusted based on imaging pattern variations for superior clarity and finer details.
Built-In Flash and Multi-Interface Shoe
A convenient pop-up flash with several flash modes is provided but the RX10 features the advanced Multi-Interface Shoe that dramatically expands compatibility with Sony digital imaging accessories such as flash units and microphones, thus increasing the potential of your photo and movie shooting.
Selectable Click/Click-Less Manual Control Ring
The manual ring gives you direct control of certain settings, zooming, and focusing, according to the focus mode in use. In addition, before turning the aperture ring to set f-stop, you can turn Aperture Click Switch on for clicked aperture adjustment or off for a quiet, smooth feel when setting the aperture. A display panel on top lets you see key settings without moving the camera as you look through the viewfinder.
Multi-Compatibility Memory Slot
The one memory card slot on the RX10 is compatible with Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo, Memory Stick XC-HG Duo, Memory Stick Micro, Memory Stick Micro Mark 2, SD, SDHC, SDXC, microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC memory cards.
Rugged Design
Magnesium alloy top and front casings make the RX10 light, solid, and robust enough for long, rigorous use by advanced photographers and videographers. The camera's dust and moisture resistant design even allows shooting in rugged outdoor environments.
Advanced Interface and Customizable Buttons
A new, improved graphical user interface makes access to frequently used functions easier, just press the Fn button to display a list of them. In addition, seven control buttons can be customized to adjust up to 40 function types for faster, personalized access to camera controls
TRILUMINOS and 4K Compatibility
The RX10 supports Sony TRILUMINOS Color for exceptionally rich, natural colors when viewing images on a TRILUMINOS display. Also, photos can be viewed on a 4K television via HDMI or wireless output.

This camera strikes me as a quality tool. It is not a small pocket camera. It has a reassuring heft to it with excellent build quality. Still images and Video exceed my expectations. While I was at it I purchased the Carl Zeiss 62mm UV filter as well as the Tiffen Digital HT neutral density filter kit and Digital HT Circular Polarizer. These are of fantastic quality and work like a gem. The internal video mics are great for indoor use, but outdoor on a slightly windy day wind noise is present. I purchased the Sony ECM-XYST1M Stereo Microphone with dead cat wind screen, all is good now for outdoor video! I recommend using the Tamrac N-45 leather padded strap, very comfy and a good upgrade for the RX-10. I would also recommend purchasing a longer USB to micro USB cable as the one provided is only about 18 inches long. Also get yourself a HDMI to micro HDMI cable to playback video on your TV. Wow, looking at pics and watching video in full 1080/60p HD is just marvelous! Very satisfied with this Sony product, not to mention all of the additional support items available from B&H!

This camera does take good photos. It is just not what I need. The focal length was not long enough and did not catch enough light for shooting on a cloudy day. I found shooting at the full focal length objects were not sharp enough. Also, the zoom is slow to respond and the bohek is OK but not to my liking.

I owe a SONY RX1R and was looking for another SONY with similar controls to make shooting between the 2 cameras easy. I think through cropping photos shot with my RX1R I can shoot everything I could with the RX10 so I am returning it.

If you shoot video you might love this camera. I thought I might keep the camera for the video but in the end I rather spend my money on an excellent lens for one of the cameras I already own.

I also tried a SONY A6000 and did not like it because the viewfinder was located on the left side, instead of being centered. I think I would recommend the A6000 with a zoom lens if you do not shoot video.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 Digital Camera:

I bought this because I was looking for something between the noisy 1/2.3 sensors of the megazooms and lugging my D800s with lens arround all day. Like my other Sony, (DSC HX-300) it takes really nice shots with a bright, fast lens. The Sony controls and operations take some getting used to, especially if you're accustomed to Nikon or Canon, but once you master them it's a breeze. The only negative is the limitation of a 200mm zoom, but as long as you are aware of that going in, it's not a major impediment. Really nice, clean pictures.

I have used many cameras in my life. The Sony RX10 is a keeper. The beautiful image quality of the Zeiss lens, the fast processing, the comprehensive user settings and the physical controls make this camera a standout, in many ways reminiscent of the Sony R1.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 Digital Camera:

It is a solid camera and XAVC-S is a good codec. I really wanted this to be a dslr replacement, but it has a few flaws that I could not overcome. The compact camera form factor is fine and it is a sturdy build all around, except for the rear LCD. That absurdly flimsy hinged contraption is the first problem. The motorized zoom is great, and the manual focus option is as well, but it really needs a manual zoom ring/mode. Finally, I was aware the sensor size and approximate crop factor, but from a DOF standpoint is much worse than it seems. It helps to have a constant aperture through the zoom range for sure, but it is at best 5.6 in terms of DOF.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 Digital Camera:

Have been a pro photographer for 40+ years and used Hasselblad and Carl Zeiss lenses for many years; getting back to a Zeiss lens on this camera has been pure joy. I've been shooting digital for 14 years; this is by far the best digital camera I have ever used and really does challenge the Hasselblads I used when shooting film.

Camera is easy to use, fairly easy to learn - compact enough to carry almost anywhere, yet the 200 mm reach of the lens makes very versatile. Even at high ISO settings, the images are great.

The manual that comes with the camera is very sketchy; I contacted Sony and downloaded the complete manual (400+ pages) for some of those tidbits of information that you need to look up somewhere.

The electronic viewfinder comes in handy. Having long used a viewfinder; I like having the viewfinder available, instead of being limited to composing on the screen.

Was pleasantly surprised to see that the shutter release button is actually threaded to accept an old style cable release. I did purchase the Sony remote release and it adds the ability to zoom from the remote release, a nice touch.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 Digital Camera:

I bought this camera for my wife for her travels as a replacement for her Canon powershot SH30. I was hesitant given price point (price has come down $ since I bought it but the informative reviews here on B&H helped me make my decision.) I am a very knowledgeable enthusiast and this camera is phenomenal. Nearly as good as my full frame DSLR in a much more convenient to carry package. Really versatile. Outstanding optics. Low Light is amazing. My wife has taken thousands of pics since purchased and she loves it. Quality of the output is shockingly good in my opinion. My wife is NOT technically inclined and she has quickly learned the basics and most intermediate functions on the camera. Her only complaint is the 'limited' zoom (200mm) compared to the superzoom point and shoot she was used to. I am seriously considering buying her the Leica V-LUX which has a 400MM zoom so I can have her RX10 as my every day carry camera.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 Digital Camera:

I increasingly use this camera for causal still photography rather than my D7100. The sensor and lens combine to produce outstanding image quality. I shoot primarily in raw aperture priority but have had excellent results with grab shots in the automatic mode. It's expensive but well worth the cost. I doubt that I will have to buy another compact camera.

After been a Nikon man for over 40 years. Owning full frames Nikons I took a chance and ordered the Sony RX10. To make a long story short this will be my main camera from now own. Excellent is and understatement.

A good deal. The case is all leather, old school. Great for traveling to protect the camera. Only thing is I wish it was 2 16 gig cards and not 1 32. I don't like to have so many pics on one card just in case something happens.

Great camera, fast at 2.8. Easy to learn, I shoot nikon but the switch to this was not hard. The only thing I wish it went to 300 not 200 for the zoom. The pics are clear. I bought this for a trip that requires less gear. I did not want to take my other camera and lens and wanted a camera that still would take good shots and that I had some room for adjustment.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 Digital Camera:

I now own the Sony RX100M3, a6000, A7, and now the RX10. I find myself naturally gravitating to the RX10, not matter whether it is for video, portraits, candids, street photography, travel, kids, or whatever, unless I need the extra resolution and tonal range of the A7, pocketability of the RX100M3, or focus speed of the a6000.The RX10 is just that good and the lens is amazing sharp. One of the reasons I got it was not only for video and all-in-one, but that the lens is just that good - razor sharp!Although it is not really very portable it is much lighter and smaller than a full size DSLR. I'm able to fit it in a small bridge camera holster case by Case Logic and it is perfect, with room for spare batteries, cleaning cloth, SD cards, etc.On top of this, you have manual control over aperture, the camera is weather sealed, it sync's with flash up to 1/1600, has a standard hot shoe, and the build is very high pro quality. I highly recommend the RX10, whether you are purchasing it for family, travel, or as an enthusiast or for pro work (check out Bob Krist's "Old Man in Motion" series or Patrick Racey-Murphy's blog where he uses it for pro shoots)

          More than I expected

          By TooOldtobePatientAnymore

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 Digital Camera:

I bought a Panasonic GX1 a year or so ago, for occasions when I might happen upon a grab shot, but did not want to carry my Canon DSLRs. They Panasonic is a nice solid little camera, but has an annoyingly noisy shutter, somewhat clumsy ergonomics, and I've never been very pleased with the picture quality. I'm not much of a videographer, but if I were, the truly poor performance of the GX1 in capturing video would have been an instant deal breaker.I bought a Sony DCS-RX10 from B&H last week as the replacement for the Panasonic, and I am absolutely delighted! I anticipated an improvement in image quality, but it would be more appropriate to compare it to a DSLR than the Panasonic, especially in reasonably well lit images. (Its low light performance is still considerably better than I expected.) The Zeiss lens is spectacular (of course!), and a nearly perfect balance of size, range, constant f2.8 aperture, very nice bokah, and commendably sharp even in the corners. As I mentioned, I am not more than a casual videographer at most, but the very high quality of the video output is impressive enough to make me reconsider my priorities. In actuality, I will probably set it up on a tripod to passively record video during some of the times that I am taking still photos with a DSLR. That will be new for me. We'll see where it leads me.I considered the RX10's only current competitor, the FZ1000, but the constant aperture lens, dust and water sealing, and my consistently excellent experience with Sony cameras over the past couple of decades led me to buy the RX10...and I am pleased that I did.If you want a small, sturdy, and versatile camera for travel, or parties, a backup for your DSLR, or just those occasional unpredictable grab shots, I recommend the RX10 without hesitation.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 Digital Camera:
