Product Highlights
  • 3.0 Solid ND Filter
  • Increase Exposure Length
  • ColorCore Technology

The Tiffen 77mm Neutral Density 3.0 Filter is a solid ND filter providing a 10 stop exposure reduction. This 3.0 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

3.0 neutral density filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

I came very close to returning this filter, then before I boxed it back up, I decided to play with it some more. I too had gotten burnt out images, turning everything magenta, and my greens yellow bronze. Cut to the chase you cannot, I repeat you CANNOT use this in any auto W/B mode, especially in "daylight". You must use custom w/b, as with all ND filters you will get some coloration (I noticed a little bit green after changing my w/b) as I have read over and over again. I am happy to say I will be keeping this filter, images are sharp, this isnt for auto anything, I had it mounted on a canon t41. pictures attached are just a quick test nothing special, they only allow 2 or I would have posted a 3rd with the the same magenta version (shot in "daylight w/b)I seen in another review here. hope this helps some. Buy American, when you can.

These filters exhibit an uncorrectable orange cast on many digital cameras. A response from Tiffen indicates that this is due to near red and IR pollution, which these filters don't filter out at the same level that they filter visible light wavelengths. There is no warning info about this on either the Tiffen filter packaging nor the B&H product info. This filter (in any size) should be avoided for use on digital cameras, particularly those with larger sensors. An alternate, such as the Tiffen IR ND 2.1 might be a better option, as it is supposed to include the appropriate near red and IR filtration. I will have to return these ND 3.0 Tiffen filters, as they are useless on my Nikon D3 and D800 cameras.

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Neutral Density 3.0 Filter:

I bought this filter along with a 3-filter set, and this one is so dense it is almost opaque. Depending on your ISO and f-stop settings, you could feasibly take an exposure during a bright sunny day that is a couple minutes or longer. Seems well made, threads easily.

Just received a 52mm one yesterday and took it straight out to test. The results were horrible all the greens disappeared and I could not correct them in Photoshop. Overall unpleasant redish orange cast.
Camera it was tested on was a Lumix G3 with 14-42mm lens.I will be sending it back.

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Neutral Density 3.0 Filter:

I purchased this filter with the intent of using it for a color image project. Using it with a Canon 5D Mark II shooting RAW files I shot several different images in different lighting conditions and found there to be a very profound magenta / purple color cast which was not a simple task by any means to adjust and correct for with RAW file editing and Photoshop. IMHO It seemed like this unwanted color cast caused a color crossover and thus correcting in one area of the spectrum caused something unwanted in an other area. I phoned Tiffen support and spoke with a gentelman who seemed genuinely interested and who also told me that they had been having problems with some camera sensors and an infrered spectrum leakage with this filter. He asked me to send some images with and without the filter and told me he would get back to me in one day. I emailed him some files and did not hear back. I called two days later and he said he received my files but had been busy and would get back to me. That was almost a month ago and I have never heard a thing back from Tiffen. I tried the filter again doing a manual custom white balance with the filter on and the results were very greenish. and not a simple matter to adjust.

I think if you will be making black and white images this filter will be fine for you as I did find the filter to produce sharp images. If your intent is to make very high quality color imagery then I think unless you want to spend much time pulling your hair out during image editing then look elsewhere.

The filter is advertised as not changing color balance. True! it just cuts off 100% of the green! You end up with a gold foliage and weak flat color every where else. Totally useless don't waste your money on this one.

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Neutral Density 3.0 Filter:

I don't have this filter but was thinking of getting one. I currently have a similar B+W filter which also gives a slight colour caste.

Looking at the various images that people have posted, they look very much like images taken through a IR filter. I suspect that this filter still lets through an appreciable amount of IR and as a result people are getting these sorts of images.

Like a few people commented, with these filters you can't just use auto-WB. The best way to use them is to first take an image of a white object, such as a sheet of paper, or a proper grey-card, and then use that as the basis for the manual white balance. In most cameras you can save the setting and then use it whenever you need to.

The other way is to use an IR-blocking filter, but then that's a lot more money and just doing a manual WB correction is the easiest.

I wanted to get more long exposure water shots so I decided to go with this filter. This gets the job done. The only negative aspects would be the on and off game you must play when composing the shot since its so dark you cannot see through it to focus and that it may be to dark depending on your setting. Needs lots of light and no wind otherwise your exposures will be have slight blur due to the wind movement. The coloring also is strange with the end results. It makes a vintage '70s filtered look so that can be great or problematic. Overall though fun to use.

Comments about Tiffen 77mm Neutral Density 3.0 Filter:

I've used this filter mid-day taking long exposures of rivers (1.5s to 6s). The smoothing effect works as expected, but there is definitely a color shift toward orange and slight vignetting. As others have stated, you can correct the orange shift in Lightroom, but if there are other elements in your picture that are supposed to be orange you would likely need to do some masking work in Photoshop.

This is my first 10 stop ND filter, so I am not sure if this is the "nature of the beast", but it is a bit disappointing.

It did put a red color cast on my final images at 1 minute plus. I was able to fix it in post.

Photos taken during the day that show movement or soften the water and clouds were the goals of purchasing this item. So far a crowd moving, at an Island wide yard sale, showed the activity of the buyers hustling around to get good deals on things that they will put in their garage sale next year.

Bought this for long exposure travel photography. Because I won't use it all that often I didn't quite want to spend the big bucks and wait for a big stopper, so I purchased to fit my largest lens, and picked up a few cheap step up rings.

I am sure a drop-in type filter would make focusing and composing easier, and quicker, but again since this is just a once in a while thing for me, I don't mind having to screw this one on and off, and I like that its not bulky like a drop in holder can be, so I can pop it in my shirt pocket.

I did get some vignetting and a slight magenta cast both easily corrected in Lightroom.

It's exactly what I wanted, and ideal for a hobbiest.

Used it to slow down moving water and clouds. Used it at night to make 30 minute exposures of buildings without any tourists showing up in the image. I have used it when ambient light was 5600k and 10,000k and it does not seem to cause a color cast. It is sturdy and obviousely well made. I recommend it.
