Regardless of which digital converter you get, obtaining and keeping a signal can be tricky. If the signal strength gets low for any reason, then you need to move the antenna or re-scan for channels. Fortunately this model allows you to add a channel manually if the channel you chose is having problems such as disappearing from your favorites list. About twice in one month, the unit failed to recognize the attached USB external drive. I simply unplugged the drive, attached it again and all was just fine.

I do wish that the unit had two tuners so that I could watch one show while recording another, or record two shows at once. However, the units are much smaller than old vcr's yet larger than most streaming devices.

For the most part, In Queens NY, I get the basic broadcast signals quite well. I even get a channel that's not yet on cable. As for the recording features, as long as you have a strong signal, and the usb hard drive can be "seen" by the system, then you can record. Keep in mind that the iview records in the dts format. You can record in Hi-Def or Standard-def if you have an old crt tv. You can also watch the files on your computer if you have a player that is designed to playback blu-ray files. (even if you chose SD, you still get a dts file. The usb drive that you record with really should be a usb 2.0 or 3.0 desktop or latptop hard drive. USB flash thumb drives do not work as well for recording. If you have a movie on your computer however that you want to see on your tv, then a USB thumb drive or regular external drive both work well.

Keep in mind, that it needs to be in a format the iview can recognize. MKV, DTS, MP4 files are all supported as well as a few others. If your movie file is not in a supported format, then you'll need to transcode/convert the format with a utility. For my old crt tv, I've been very satisfied. I would like to record in 1080P and use a family members Hi-def tv to see how well it works with a newer tv. The remote, does take some time getting used to. I've had the unit about a month and I still make mistakes.

As for support, I haven't had to use iview's customer support yet. There are very exhaustive forums on the internet which offer excellent advice on how to best use this converter and recorder. Just type the words "iview 3500ST Forum" without the quotes into you search engine of choice. If you are going to be recording in Hi-Def, then I suggest getting a 2 to 3 terabyte external usb drive. The unit does not take advantage of USB 3.0 at this time, but can recognize drives up to 3TB.

As far as getting encrypted channels over the air, forget it. No digital converter or recorder can do that if your using an antenna. I cut my cable, so I'm not certain if you can set up a Qam tuner with you local cable company or not.

If they get the bugs out (hopefully with a firmware update) this could be a great product. Having a menu on broadcast TV in which you can schedule recording to a hard drive is nice. Some of the problems: Sometimes when the current and next program are list at the bottom of the screen the listing for the upcoming program is wrong. It actually shows a previous program. Sometimes when setting a program for recording or viewing it will tell you that it's already in progress. The the program I'm trying to set is several hours in the future. When this happens you need to turn the unit on and off. This corrects the problem. Also when I set channels to be deleted or skipped in the program listing it will indicate that it has saved the setting but when the unit is turned off and on it loses the setting and you have to reset the channels once more, which until you shut it off. The channel programs are listed as you go through the channels but this can take some time to load. This information is not saved so it has to be reloaded with every channel change. It would be nice if this was stored in the unit. The actual information about a program also takes some time to load. It would also be nice to be able to turn the need for a password off. The unit has a very narrow acceptance for the use of the remote. And sometimes the unit seems to be busy and does not respond to the remote. All be said I like the unit but can be improved. Hopefully there will be a firmware update soon.

Awesome. Plug in and go. I got it just as a tuner for OTA tv for my projector. Works great. Says it converts from digital to analog. But, if you just need a tuner, this is perfect.

It has a DVR capability if you supply the hard drive. I have a hard drive, but have not taken the time to try it yet.

This is a great product. And the price is great.
I use a 64GB flash drive, and there is plenty of
recording space for HD, and much more if you record
in Standard definition. I purchased this device in
              March of 2015.
A previous reviewer commented about it only having a single tuner. Good news to all. When I
talked with the company that supplies them to retailers, I was told that a 2 tuner model will be coming out after November in 2015.

It works as a Digital Converter Box. All the other "features" appear to be just a 5th grade science project. The remote control barely works beyond 4 feet. Recording is consistently unreliable. Weekly scheduled programs are constantly dropped from the schedule. If trying to record two programs back to back, you are notified that there is a scheduling conflict. Have experienced many occasions where ALL recorded programs are erased from storage. Ninety day warrantee, as long as you do not feel a $20 return shipping is a bit outrageous. It was only [$] with free shipping. You win some and you lose some! Are you feeling lucky?

Replaced a Magnavox unit with the 3500STBII. Immediately found 8 more channels so it was a plus just plugging in. Use it daily for the PVR function. The wife likes Dr.Phil, a 32GB USB drive covers a weeks worth of shows. I would say a plus, will probably buy another

I bought this unit for it's dvr-pvr features. It detected a usb flash drive and external usb hard drive with no problem. Offers a time shift, pause live tv feature that works great. Picture and sound quality great. Tunes over the air channels faster than my tv so I use it as a tuner for my digital tv. Extremely satisfied. 1080p programming consumes approximately 4gb per hour.

It is the best choice of all the converter boxes that I have looked at. Their are not many that allow channels to be locked out where wanted or needed. You have a very satisfied customer.

Bought this item to connect to landline cable and use the tuner to send picture to projectors in a conference room. Setup was slightly confusing. Need to make sure you have the correct country and input type prior to scanning channels. The various ways to sort channels also gets a bit involved, but overall the unit appears to do a great job for putting cable TV onto the wall screens.

Make sure you get a good HDTV antenna. I'm on Riverside Drive in the 90s and the Mohu Leaf is working pretty well. Has a decent remote functions. Need to be very precise in pointing remote at the unit - a bit finicky.

I use it to convert signal for older recorders. The DVR function works great, so I don't even need the older recorder. The instructions are poor and to be able to watch a recorded program in the DVR function you need to push the green button on the remote to go full screen. If you want to burn a DVD you can convert and burn in Windows 7.

It came up in HDTV (DTV , ATSC) mode; and, tried to auto-scan. But, I was looking for it to auto-find the unencrypted CableTV (QAM) channels...we're actually using it to receive channels on our building wide MATV coax network, that is generated by a ZeeVee TV Digital Cable Modulator, which only generates QAM TV Channels. It wouldn't find QAM until I manually stopped the boot-up auto-scan, found the menus, and changed the Antenna Type from "Air" to "Cable". We're not using the DVR function; so, I can't speak at that.

And, unfortunately it numbers the channels 2, 3, 4. Instead of 6.1, 3.1, etc. So Channel 1 is our 2.1. And, Channel 2 is our 3.1. Kind of confusing to untrained users. Once you choose a channel, it does display the proper x.x number in the top corner of the tv for a moment.

Bought this to pick up QAM channels in my bedroom
where I have an older TV without QAM. When I scanned the cable stations (I know there are about 20 unscrambled QAM channels available) it only found about four. Support site says no firmware update available for this model. Therefore, it's back in the box and will be put away until maybe someday the firmware gets updated. Now it's back to looking for a QAM tuner that works.

I plugged in a USB thumb drive and a rabbit ears antenna and it records off air and plays back in HD via HDMI. Great quality. Interface is a bit awkward compared to a cable box w/ a monthly fee. You are depending on the over the air info for the grid so it only goes about 24 hours ahead. The remote is not as intuitive as it could be an sometimes you have to hit the button twice to get a response, but for $ dollars it is a great value.
