Used for travel, hiking, landscape, general photography. I don't do much action/sports photography or portraiture. I've been using an Olympus E-620 and was looking to upgrade. Looked at the higher end APS-C sensor cameras from competitors and I kept thinking I want those features and IQ but I also wanted smaller, lighter, and less conspicuous. The E-M5 ticked most of the boxes I considered important. For example, I can wrap the camera in neoprene and chuck it plus a couple of lenses in neoprene sleeves into a day pack and hardly even know I have a camera. It's considerably lighter and smaller than the E-620. IQ at higher isos and dynamic range are dramatically better than the E-620. Based on images available on review sites my old eyes tell me sensor perofrmance is very close to the current cameras using the APS-C Sony sensors (which I've thought set the standard for sensor performance the last few years). The in body image stabilization is very effective and when coupled with fast primes like the Panasonic-Leica 25mm or Olympus 45mm this camera can be hand held in pretty darn low light. Autofocus with native m43 lenses in single focus mode is VERY fast. I wanted a camera with dual control dials and programmable buttons. The flip out lcd and 1-touch focus/shoot is very stealthy for street photography. People in public places just aren't as put off by it as they are when someone has a larger dSLR. Excellent build quality. I really like the EVF, it's very bright and sharp,Potential Negatives: Continuous autofocus tracking still isn't as effective as the better pdaf systems on current dSLRs. The size could be too small for some folks. I use the horizontal grip pretty much all the time and think it really improves handling. Smaller and lighter comes at the cost of smaller buttons that are closer together. The Olympus menu system is not exactly transparent. You can really customize the camera but there's a potential learning curve getting comfortable with the menu options. It has lots of electronics and battery life is mediocre.IMO, all cameras and systems represent compromises. I'm a hard grader and will only give it 4 stars. Not because I don't like it and not because I wouldn't recommend it, but because it's not all things to all people.

Have the camera close to a year, from the get go the manual tells it all. instructively poor and yes, I would not buy this product on a due over. The manual is not the only issue, Olympus cheap out on the flash, unless you play with the settings your flash photos will be underexposed , you must adjust the ISO setting until the right exposure is achieved.

Most of my flash photos are fixable on my P/C nevertheless this shouldn't be the case.

On the positive side, daylight photos are perfect. On the negative side photos in poor light require ISO adjustments and again much editing on my P/C.

I use the OM-D EM-5 for travel photography. It is compact and lightweight but rugged and weatherproof. I found the handgrip to be a bit small for my hand size, so I added the accessory HLD-6 battery grip.

All in all a terrific camera! Very compact but produces high quality images even with kit lens. Looking forward to adding other lenses and ultimately may phase out of DSLR. Would have given 5 stars if not for poor user's manual.
Still a highly recommended camera .

Comments about OM-D E-M5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-50mm Lens (Black):

This is my favorite camera for all things fun in photography. For all things serious in photography I use my E-M1 with grip and typically the 12-40 F2.8, or my Nikon D600 with its fleet of pro glass. But even shooting formal events and weddings, my E-M5 goes along as a backup / prime lens shooter typically wearing the 17mm 1.8 or the 45mm 1.8. The good news is that 95% of my shots are fun photography, and the E-M5 is my favorite. I did a fairly extensive subjective comparison / analysis of these three cameras I've mentioned when I reviewed my E-M1 if you're interested. The bottom line is that the E-M5 is my favorite fun camera. IQ is on par with the E-M1 and its built like a little solid brick of high tech camera. I don't want to put a grip on the M5 although I did spring for a half-case. I love it just the way it is and I have shot some jaw-dropping photos with it. Do take a look at my review of the E-M1 if you're trying to decide which way to go. Both cameras are excellent, and unless you're a serious sports action photographer, either camera will get the job done. It comes down to ergonomics and which glass you'll be using. If you're using the pro 12-40 or plan to use the upcoming pro 40-150 then the E-M1 is probably a better solution. If you're using the little prime lenses then the E-M5 is perfect in my estimation.

This camera was purchased for a travel blogger to capture great videos and great photos with a camera that is not too bulky and is easy to operate. I can honestly say it captures excellent photos for such a small and reasonably priced camera. The video, on the other hand, looks really bad. It is very grainy and noisy. I can't believe the night and day difference between the photos and the video. I wish I could send this camera back, but it's probably too late now.

Stay away from this camera, if video is a large part of how you'll use it. It looks not better than a cheap camcorder.

Comments about OM-D E-M5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-50mm Lens (Silver):

After 3.5 years of fulltime DSLR use, I decided to change as my camera was too heavy to carry while doing difficult hikes. I finally opted for the EM-5 because of it's lighter weight, weather resistance, and the price drop coinciding with the release of the OM-1. Although initally impressed, I now leave it mostly at home due to the EM-5's idiocyncracies, my changing needs, and improving camera technology.

                The Good:
                =========

                - Mechanically very solid.
                - Fantastic multi burst/frame per second ability
                - Sensor size gives excellent images. Unless extremely large photo printing is needed, images in good light should be very very sharp with very good detail. In low light, you will get noise as it is still not as good as the latest aps-c or FF sensors for low light noiseless photos at lower ISO. Also depends on the lens you use, White Balance chosen, but still in between compact sensor and aps-c for low light noise.
                - LCD is tiltable and touchscreen. Touchscreen makes the camera feel very modern and high tech. You can go through menus, and also take photos touching the LCD.
                - The 12-50mm lens is a beautifully designed 3in1 lens. It has macro ability, electronic quiet zoom for quiet and smooth focussing during video recording, and manual zooming. Images are sharp and there is no noticeable distortion at the widest focal length of 12mm, which is common in many lenses. Despite the small aperture, this is a quality lens.

                - Battery life is good.

                - Weight is 250-400 grams lighter than an equivalent DSLR with same focal length lens.

                The bad:
                ========

                - Not ergonomic. This means it's not easy or instinctive to use. I use a wide range of camera types and brands. Olympus needs to take lessons on ergonomics. There are so many annoyances that I could write a page about it. Can I use the EM-5? Sure. Is it fast and easy to use? No. IN fact it's slow. Many people get used to it so this is a personal opinion I know many do not feel as strongly about. But in the last 12 months I've used Pentax and Canon dslr's, and Canon and Pentax megazoom compact sensor cameras, and, of course, multiple mobile phone cameras. All of them are easier to use than the Olympus.

                - The Olympus lenses all zoom in the opposite direction of most lens makers.

The reason I give 4 stars despite my big dislike of the layout and general unfriendliness of the EM-5 is the fact that a camera is ultimately for taking photos, and, increasingly, videos. And the photos are very good. Although I use other cameras now, the EM-5 takes good photos, so I feel it's 3 stars for user friendliness, 5 stars for photo quality and camera capabilities, balancing out to 4 stars.

                  Exquisitely designed...for small hands

Comments about OM-D E-M5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-50mm Lens (Silver):

I was over the moon when I first discovered this camera, though I was late to the party on this one. The retro design hooked me immediately. I went to my local camera store to try it out and I was impressed with the 9 fops. I was excited about the variable angle screen and most of all the smaller size. At the time I didn't want a bulky DSLR as I wanted to be able to carry a camera with me more often than not without any size restrictions. So when I finally made the decision to purchase from B&H I thought I made the right choice. When it finally came, it was much smaller than I remembered from the camera store. I think my mind was clouded from how retro and slick the whole package was in person. That contrasted with the teeny tiny camera body that I played with for a couple days before deciding to return. The quality was great. The body had some heft and the IQ was really good. However, after using it around the house for a couple days, my larger hands literally felt all cramped because I was holding a camera that was far too small for my larger hands. In addition, the actual buttons on the boys were not only very tiny, but they were oddly packed too close to one another. That being said, if you have smaller hands and smaller fingers to press the small buttons with, I have no doubt you will love this camera. My absolute only complaint was the size. Everything else from the form factor, to the image quality, to the quality lenses available are really good. It seems to have a lot of aficionados around the globe. Some of these fans I followed on YouTube and Facebook to learn more about the lenses available, which there are many. So in the end, because of my larger hands, I'm afraid I will in the end have no choice but to go with the bulkier DSLR.

Comments about OM-D E-M5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-50mm Lens (Black):

This is a wonderful camera. It produces excellent images and pretty much every aspect of its operation can be customised so it works just the way you want it. Although the included 12-50mm lens is not so great, it is useful to have around as an all-purpose, all-weather option, and can be switched out for any number of nice prime lenses.

I purchased this as a new primary camera with my Olympus EPS-2, and I love this one.
The only downside for me is the weight of the 12-70 lens, but it is very versatile and takes great shots.

Comments about OM-D E-M5 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-50mm Lens (Black):

Whether you are travelling, working or just at home with your kids, with this camera you get the best image quality and the fastest autofocus available without breaking your back carrying the much heavier gear produced by other brands.

It is the best camera available in the Micro FourThirds standard, with lenses manufactured mostly by Olympus and Panasonic, as well as other top rated suppliers.

With just 3 of the 42 lenses available, you will be able to cover extreme wide angles all the way to very long telephoto shots:

                        Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4 ASPH
Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/4-5.6 ASPH II
                        Panasonic Lumix G Vario 100-300mm f/4-5.6 ASPH

In my case, I chose to replace the 14-140mm with the most outstanding zoom lenses for low light photography available:

                        Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH
                        Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 35-100mm f/2.8 ASPH

And of the 10 single-focal lenses available with auto focus, 5 are just perfect for those portraits with blurred backgrounds (bokeh):

                        Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8
                        Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 ASPH II
Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH
                        Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 45mm f/1.8 ED MSC
Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 75mm f/1.8 ED MSC, producing the sharpest shots of any lens.

It is such an enticing choice of glass that I ended up getting myself a second body. Now I have one black for the zooms and one silver for most of the single-focal lenses.

The OMD is a great micro 4/3rds camera. My main reason for buying this over the GH3 was the image stability that the OMD offers, not to mention the super digital pics it yields. I use the OMD and Panasonic lenses.....this gives me image stabilization on the body and on the panasonic lenses.Which produces fantastic sharp digital Photos.

This camera replaces my old OM film gear. I was quickly as comfortable with this camera as I was with my old OMs. The learning curve is a little high because you can configure EVERYTHING. The size is actually a little small. It's hard to hang on to the camera and make the adjustments necessary for quick shooting.
                            Overall, I love it!
