The silver Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is a highly compact and lightweight digital camera featuring a 16 megapixel Micro Four Thirds Digital Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor to produce high resolution imagery with notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 25600. The combination of these two technologies affords a wealth of detail and clarity in imagery and also supports full HD 1080i/p video recording at 60 or 24 fps in the high-quality AVCHD format. The Venus Engine also affords fast continuous shooting speeds; up to 5 fps in full resolution, 40 fps using an electronic shutter, and 4 fps with full-time AF.

Benefitting the imaging capabilities is an equally well-performing Light Speed AF system, which uses a contrast-detection method for quickly and accurately acquiring focus in a wide variety of lighting conditions. When working with manual focus, Focus Peaking is available as a more objective means for determining critical focus.

The sleek magnesium alloy frame with aluminum alloy controls houses a large 3.0" 1,036k-dot LCD monitor, which features a touchscreen design for intuitive operation. Built-in wireless capabilities enable the GM1 to be remotely controlled from a linked mobile device and also supports image transfer to devices using the Panasonic Image App.

Included with the GM1 is the versatile Lumix G Vario 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH MEGA O.I.S. lens; a standard zoom providing a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-64mm. Its retractable design meshes well with the small form-factor of the camera and the inclusion of MEGA O.I.S. image stabilization benefits working with longer shutter speeds and in low-light conditions.

16MP Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
A 16 megapixel Micro Four Thirds Digital Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor work together to produce high resolution imagery that exhibits a great deal of clarity, detail, and overall impressive image quality. The processing power affords heightened sensitivity to ISO 25600 with minimal noise for enhanced use in low-light conditions. The Venus Engine also provides a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including the ability to record up 5 fps in full resolution, 40 fps using an electronic shutter, and continuous shooting at 4 fps with full-time AF.
Body Design
Featuring a highly compact design, the GM1 measures just 3.9 x 2.2 x 1.2" and has a lightweight magnesium alloy frame for refined looks and enhanced durability. An aluminum alloy top dial, shutter release button, and lever as well as a sleek artificial leather wrap also contribute to a high aesthetic appeal and functionality. A large 3.0" 1,036k-dot LCD monitor is available for live view, image playback, and menu navigation and features a touchscreen design to enable more intuitive use. Additionally, a built-in pop-up flash with a guide number of 13.1' at ISO 100 is also incorporated into the design to provide additional illumination when working in low-lit conditions.
Focusing Performance
An array of focusing technologies are available to help ensure sharp focus when working in all shooting modes with any type of subject matter. Light Speed AF, a contrast-detection AF system that functions at a rate of up to 240 fps, is used to intelligently and accurately determine critical focus in quick and efficient manner. The speed of this system is ideal for photographing and tracking fast-moving subjects in a variety of lighting conditions. Low Light AF is also available to help determine critical focus in dimly-lit (-4 EV) conditions without the need of an AF assist lamp.

If working with manual focus, focus peaking is available to provide a more objective means for determining exacting focus based on highlighting edges of contrast within the scene. Pin-Point AF allows for live view images to be magnified from 3-10x during shooting for homing in on tight details and One-Shot AF allows focus to be acquired quickly and automatically with manual focusing abilities available for greater focus refinement and creative control. Full-area focus makes use of the intuitive touchscreen design and allows you to tap anywhere within the frame to set focus and AFF mode acquires autofocus as normal and then can reset focus if the determined target moves.
Lumix G Vario 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH MEGA O.I.S. Lens
Included with the GM1 is the standard zoom Lumix G Vario 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH MEGA O.I.S. lens, which covers a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-64mm. The lens complements the compact stature of the GM1 and features a retractable design to maintain an overall sleek profile. Three aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element are incorporated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range while also contributing to high overall sharpness. Multi-coated lens elements also benefit the image quality through the reduction of lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich and color-neutral photos and videos. MEGA O.I.S. image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake to support working in low lighting and with longer shutter speeds while support for the contrast-detection sensor drive at max. 240 fps focusing system enables quick and precise AF performance.
Built-In Wireless Connectivity
Wireless connectivity is integrated into the GM1 to enabled remote transferring and control of the camera from mobile devices when using the Panasonic Image App. Zoom and focus can be controlled through the app as well as remote releasing of the shutter. Images can be sent directly to mobile devices for instant sharing online and, additionally, locational information can be recorded to images' metadata using the GPS log of a linked mobile device.
Full HD Video Recording
The 16MP Micro Four Thirds sensor also supports full HD 1080 video recording in both 60i and 24p frame rates, at a maximum bit rate of 24 Mbps. Both the high quality AVCHD and the Internet-friendly MP4 formats can be used depending on the intended output and editing workflow used and stereo sound is recorded with videos using a built-in microphone. Full-time continuous AF and tracking AF modes can be used during recording and exposure settings can be manually adjusted using programmed AE, aperture-priority, shutter speed-priority, and manual exposure modes. Touch AF and Touch AE controls also prove to be effective means for modifying the focus and exposure settings while recording video and focus peaking is ideal when working with manual focus.
Other Camera Features
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range) automatically composites several images of varying exposures in order to gain greater highlight and shadow details and an extensive middle range of tones.
  • Touch AE allows you to select the point within the image where an exposure metering is taken; ideal for backlit subjects or high contrast scenes.
  • The iA (Intelligent Auto) modes help to intelligently assign a range of exposure-related benefits in order to produce more realistic, high-quality imagery, and include Handheld Night Shot, iHDR (Intelligent High Dynamic Range), AF Tracking, Intelligent D-Range Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Recognition, and Intelligent ISO Control. Additionally, iA Plus Mode enables control over background defocus, exposure compensation, and white balance settings for even more refined control.
  • Silent Mode switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic operation and disables all sounds and AF assist lamps for greater inconspicuousness while shooting.
  • Time Lapse Shot automatically records sequential images over a set period of time, which can then be automatically combined in order to produce a time lapse video.
  • Stop Motion Animation permits the creation of stop motion videos by automatically sequencing frames into a video file without needing to use an editing program.
  • A Level Gauge can be used to help ensure level horizons and plumb verticals. The gauge will automatically switch orientation when shooting in the vertical format.
  • Monochrome Filter in Photo Style works to simulate the effects of black and white color contrast filters, such as yellow, orange, red, and green filters, to enhance the appearance of monochromatic images in-camera.
  • Multi Exposure mode allows up to four distinct exposures to be made and layered within a single frame for unique, creative effects.
  • Clear Retouch makes it possible to remove unwanted objects, figures, or other aspects of an image by simply tracing over them on the touchscreen monitor.
  • Creative Control mode facilitates the creation of creatively enhanced imagery by providing 22 different effects, including Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Monochrome, Dynamic Monochrome, Rough Monochrome, Silky Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Toy Pop, Bleach Bypass, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Fantasy, Star Filter, One Point Color, and Sunshine.
  • A supersonic wave filter protects the sensor from dust and is able to vibrate approximately 80,000 times per second in order to effectively repel dust and other particles.
  • Language support: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Russian, Chinese (Traditional), Chinese (Simplified), Dutch, Thai, Korean, Turkish, Portuguese, Arabic, Persian, Japanese, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Greek, and Vietnamese.

It has been a long time since I looked for a "video photo pen". A device which knows how to get to the point without sacrificing to the quality of the image. Just a "presses button". A device where the effects would be just as a "cherry on a cake". For one year, most of our professional realizations are filmed with the Panasonic DMC-GH3. Whether it is for commercial, legal, marriage, fiction, etc.. The Panasonic is a marvel. It is just damage which Panasonic France does not assure as regards the collaboration with the professionals. Panasonic France does not like the small independent directors. How to bring the DMC-GH3 on holidays ? In week-end ? I want something compact and performing. A device with fix focal one . There is the RX1 of Sony, but it is very expensive. For me.In September, Panasonic announces the DMC-GM1. I tear. It is magnificent. Simple. Basic. Compact. Only the lens bothers me. I do not like zooms for a private use. It is without mattering, I shall replace the lens by the Panasonic 14 mm f2.5 or the Olympus 17 mm f/1.7 f/1.7.Today, the DMC-GM1 is in my hands. It is almost too small. Nevertheless, I have no big hands. The menu is similar to that of the other Panasonic. Clear and immediately available. We are far from the "labyrinthine system" of Olympus and Fuji.An element begins to bother me. It is impossible to place a quick release plate for photo or video tripod with another lens than the Panasonic 12-32 mm or 14 mm. With the Olympus 17 mm, it is limit. With the Panasonic 20 mm or 12-35 f / 2.8, you should not dream. It is impossible. Direction La Grand Bibliothèque de Paris behind my home.It is cold. Paris is grey. The recording is going to change that of these dear Americans where their images are always full of sun and blue sky. Panasonic DMC-GM1 holds perfectly well in the pocket of my coat. It is even feels at ease.Right out, it becomes different. To hold a metallic object is not very pleasant. I would have to buy these famous gloves for photographer. I am surprised by the reactivity of the DMC-GM1. It is immediate. Faster than the DMC-GH3. The touch-sensitive screen is reactive too. Even too much. Take care where you put fingers. Too low on the screen, you modify the white balance without being careful. It happened to me. The screen glorifies the images but without betraying them really. What you see is what you will get …Return at home. The editing is also simple as for the DMC-GH3. The audio dubbing is essential. The audio recording is mediocre. Including with the wind filter. To use only indoor. Now it just needs a nice case to carry the DMC-GM1. Enjoy your Panasonic.Cheers.

I was looking for a lightweight camera for carrying around. This is a camera you really have to read the manual to understand it. Wish the lens was a stop or two faster. Image quality is excellent but as with most 4/3 cameras don't expect great images above 6400. Going to invest in a fast prime for sure. Price is steep for what it is.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GM1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm Lens (Silver):

Yes, the pictures already show this camera to be really small, yet you will most likely still be surprised at the size when you hold it in person...unless the largest camera you've ever seen is a point and shoot. Besides the size, AF is fast and image quality up to ISO3200 seem useable.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GM1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm Lens (Orange):

This is my toss-in-the-bag travel camera. Very good image quality, reliable auto-focus. The 12-32 kit lens performs extremely well, though slow - all the goodness of M43 is a tiny package. It's jacket, not pants, pocketable though it may get close with a pancake lens.

Battery life isn't that great compared to my DSLR's, but I think that's par for a an LCD based viewfinder.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GM1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm Lens (Silver):

Camera body same size as my Panasonic LX7 but with large sensor and interchangeable lenses. Works great with the smaller Olympus micro 4/3 lenses. Only one downside other than no electronic viewfinder. While exposures as short as 1/16000 sec (1/500 sec mechanical) are available, the electronic first curtain shutter takes a minimum of 1/100 sec to complete an exposure. (Remember, the focal plane shutter exposure duration is not determined by how fast the curtains travel but by the time gap between the start of the first curtain and the start of the second curtain.) As a result, electronic shutter curtains, which with current technology, travel slower than spring loaded mechanical curtains, are more susceptible to rolling shutter artifacts. That is, the whole frame may "lean" during fast panning or a fast moving object in the frame may exhibit distortion that I refer to as leaning. But, with current technology, that is the price to be paid for such a tiny camera with such amazing features. One other major plus for the GM1 is that any "shutter shock" effects (which apparently are exhibited all other micro four-thirds cameras to varying degrees when using a mechanical shutter) caused by a relatively large, spring loaded, high speed mechanical shutter are apparently eliminated. The GM1 first curtain is exclusively electronic and the mechanical second curtain is driven by stepping motors--not springs--to enable it to match the speed of the electronic first curtain. (Don't want the mechanical second curtain ending the exposure prematurely!)

Comments about Lumix DMC-GM1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm Lens (Silver):

This camera is small........very small. It takes awhile to get used to the size. I have a nikon d700 and d7000 which can be tiring to carry for long periods of time. The gm1 fits in my jacket pocket. The IQ is exceptional....AF very good. I also got the pana 20 1.7 which is on the camera most of the time. Love this camera!!

Comments about Lumix DMC-GM1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm Lens (Silver):

To put things concisely: no, don't expect this camera to outperform the highest models in the technical aspects of photography (though lets see who can beat its 1/16000 shutter speed for once). But what it offers is something that not many others (if any) does: an uncompromised image quality at a diminutive size, with all the benefits that that implies, such as having the camera with you at all times without even noticing it, as it fits any small handbag or big pocket. Having the ability to carry it wherever you go to get such a good image quality for most purposes far outweighs the sacrifices made to achieve this level of portability, in my opinion.[*]

Comments about Lumix DMC-GM1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm Lens (Silver):

I was looking for a solid, flexible camera that would be a substantial step up from my iPhone and yet still small enough to take with me everywhere. I think this camera is fits the bill better than anything else on the market, but it's not perfect. Overall, I'm happy with the image quality. I've owned a Canon 5D mk ii, Nikon D90 and the GM1's image quality is very close to the Nikon but noticeably below the Canon. This was not really a surprise, considering it has a much smaller sensor, but micro 4/3 cameras are often sold as DSLR replacements and in my opinion, they're not quite there. The most noticeable difference -- and biggest surprise -- is that there is some visible image noise at the base ISO 200. This was a little disappointing because the Olympus OMD M1 has a base ISO of 100 that's pretty clean. Not a deal breaker, but it would be nice if the GM1 did 100 natively. On the other hand the video quality of the GM1 is excellent and far surpasses anything I've seen come out of the OMD M1 (or nearly anything else). So overall, it's a great little camera for what it is. Easy to carry around and fast and responsive to use. I recommend it as long as you recognize what it is and what it isn't.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GM1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm Lens (Silver):

really small camera with lots of features. Takes some time to get used to all the menu settings and sometimes you get lost because the function you want to use cannot be activated because some other function blocks it. For example, flash will not work because you are in electronic shutter mode, and took a whole lots of time to find that you can't change shutter mode if the camera is in silent mode !
Also, first camera I have run out of battery, luck I had my iphone nearby.
Setting the wifi was also difficult.
Most EOS cameras I had I never needed the owners manual, with this you have to. I guess this one also has so more features than a 60D.
One more issue, my thumb tends to land on the touchscreen, making that the point of focus. May be a little bump over there would have made me a bit more aware.
Anyway, I like the camera and would recommend it.

Comments about Lumix DMC-GM1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm Lens (Silver):

I have owned many panasonic cameras over the past decade, in my opinion this little darling is nothing short of amazing. Excluding 60p, and the high bit rate.mp4 codec found on the GH3, the 24&30p 1080p video image is equal to GH3 and light, and IMO significantly cleaner at 3200 iso. That, when combined with the fact that the camera only weighs 12.7 ounces with the 20mm f1.7 lens is quite impressive. On the still camera side i find the image significantly cleaner, and focus much faster than the comparable Sony RX100 vers.1.
The GM1 also has a very accurate peaking function, with selectable colors and intensity. This feature, plus the in camera time-lapse function makes the GM1 my favorite video/still camera since the introduction of the 5DMKII. What an outstanding, yet powerful little package!

Great, but only if you get a good prime

          By gm1

          from nyc

Comments about Lumix DMC-GM1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm Lens (Silver):

Love the camera, but only because I bought the 20mm/f1.7 at the same time. The kits lens is so slow. My Canon S100 outperforms the GM1 with kit lens on many levels, higher shutter speed at lower iso, better zoom, smaller, better controls, at 1/3 the price.

But, once you attach a fast prime, it's ideal for street shooting. The small size, touch screen and fast autofocus may make it best camera out there for capturing spontaneous moments.

Another caveat, the 20mm/f1.7 often produces nasty banding in low light/high iso/black areas of photos, if you love night photos, get another prime. I'm returning mine and getting the 25mm/f.14

Comments about Lumix DMC-GM1 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm Lens (Silver):

This camera takes superb pictures mounted with the Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II. The light the lens picks up indoors makes using a flash unnecessary which is one reason I bought the f/1.7.

Aside from that, this camera is light/small and easy to carry which is what I wanted. I came from a older Sony DSC-F717 which was a monster size camera compared to the GM1.

The best part is the picture quality. Very clear, sharp pictures with excellent color saturation. You'd have to try hard to find issues with the pictures this camera takes. The LCD live view is superb and clear as well.

Are there negatives? Sure. It's really small so it can be a little difficult pushing the buttons on the back. It's not that bad, however, and I have big hands too. I push a wrong button every now and then. It's easy to take pictures with though and the small size is not a negative for that. You can reach and use the shutter button with no issues. Also, the f/1.7 is a little slow on focusing but not that slow. Can't say much about the kit lens that came with it as I haven't tried that one yet.
