The black Nikon D5300 DSLR Camera features a DX-format 24.2 megapixel sensor and EXPEED 4 image processor to produce high-resolution still imagery and full HD video with notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 12800 and a fast continuous shooting rate of 5 fps. The sensor design omits the traditional optical low-pass filter in order to gain the utmost sharpness and resolution from both photos and videos. Complementing the imaging assets are both a versatile 39-point autofocus system, with nine cross-type sensors, and a 2,016-pixel RGB sensor for precise exposure metering in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, 1920 x 1080p movie recording is supported, in multiple frame rates up to 60 fps, with full-time continuous auto focusing capabilities.

The compact, yet durably designed, camera body incorporates both an optical pentamirror optical viewfinder along with a large 3.2" 1,037k-dot vari-angle LCD monitor, which features a 180° swivel design to better support working from high and low angles. Also integrated into the D5300 are both Wi-Fi and GPS modules, which enable advanced image sharing capabilities as well as location-based image tagging. When paired with an Android or iOS mobile device, remote viewing and control over the shutter release is possible from a distance and a vast network of pre-populated Points of Interest adds to the overall geotagging functionality.

For creatively enhancing the look and feel of imagery in-camera, a wide range of Picture Control modes, Scene Modes, and Special Effects modes are available as well as a host of in-camera image editing capabilities for adjusting settings prior to sharing. Built-in HDR and Active D-Lighting modes can also be used to optimize exposure results by preserving highlight and shadow details for an extended range of apparent tones.

24.2MP DX-Format Sensor and EXPEED 4 Processor
The 24.2 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 processor work together to produce overall high image quality with notable detail, dynamic range, color accuracy, and low-light sensitivity to a native ISO 12800, which is further expandable to ISO 25600. Additionally, the sensor's design omits an optical low-pass filter in order to acquire the greatest amount sharpness and detail from subjects. The EXPEED 4 processor also enables a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including support for full HD 1080p movie recording and a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 5 fps.
Multi-CAM 4800DX Autofocus Sensor
Benefitting the high image quality is an apt AF system that employs 39 distinct AF points, including nine cross-type sensors, to quickly acquire focus in a range of lighting conditions, from -1 to +19 EV. A unique 3D-tracking mode utilizes the 2,016-pixel RGB sensor, typically reserved for exposure metering, in order to maintain sharp focus on moving subjects. To better suit specific subject matter when working in AF-A or AF-C focus modes, Dynamic-area AF mode allows you to choose from 9, 21, or 39-point arrays for enhanced subject tracking and recognition, even if the subject briefly leaves the frame. Single-point AF, 3D-tracking, and Auto-area AF modes are also available.

When working in live view, for either still or movie shooting, a contrast-based AF system is employed to acquire focus precisely and can function in continuous, full-time servo mode to better suit working with moving subjects. Additionally, four AF-area modes are available when working in live view: Face-priority AF, Wide-area AF, Normal-area AF, and Subject-tracking AF.
Wi-Fi and GPS Connectivity
Supporting a wealth of sharing and tagging possibilities, the D5300 features built-in Wi-Fi and GPS modules to enable seamless transferring of imagery as well as geotagging functionality. Once the Nikon Wireless Mobile Utility app has been installed on an Android or iOS mobile device, you can use that device to browse the contents of the memory card, select images, and seamlessly transfer files between devices for immediate sharing online. Additionally, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera to enable working from a distance.

The integrated GPS functionality can be used to assign locational data to all image files for geotagging purposes and for plotting imagery to an interactive map. Points of Interest can also be found using this information to further aid in efficient location-based tagging.
Body Design
Even while maintaining an overall compact form-factor, the D5300 integrates a large 3.2" 1,037k-dot vari-angle LCD monitor, which features a 180° swivel design to better suit working from high, low, and front-facing angles. Alternatively, a bright pentamirror optical viewfinder is also integrated into the design for precise eye-level viewing and real-time monitoring of subjects.

A built-in pop-up flash is also available for additional illumination when working in low-light conditions and supports Nikon's i-TTL flash metering system. A hot shoe can be used, too, for connection and optional external flash for even greater lighting control.
Scene Recognition System and Exposure Metering
The intelligent Scene Recognition System with 3D Color Matrix Metering II utilizes a 2016-pixel RGB sensor to evaluate and analyze all aspects within a scene, including brightness, contrast, subject distance, and the scene colors, to quickly determine an accurate exposure and white balance setting to best render the scene at hand. The information gathered is also checked against onboard reference images to ensure consistency from image to image in regard to exposure, white balance, i-TTL flash settings, and subject-tracking AF performance.
Full HD Movie Recording
Full HD 1920 x 1080p movie recording is supported in 60, 30, 25, and 24 fps frame rates, as well as HD 720p and SD 480p in multiple frame rates, in the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format. During recording, full-time autofocus can be employed, with face-detection and subject-tracking capabilities, for ensured sharpness with a wide variety of subject types.

A built-in stereo microphone can be used to record high-quality sound or, alternatively, a microphone input is integrated into the body design to support the use of an external microphone for enhanced control over audio recordings.
Other Camera Features
  • Picture Control modes can be directly accessed via a dedicated button and allow you to set predefined looks to imagery in-camera, and include Landscape, Monochrome, Neutral, Portrait, Standard, Vivid, and user-customizable settings.
  • RAW (NEF) files can be recorded as lossless compressed or compressed at either 12 or 14-bit depth.
  • Built-in HDR works to extend the tonal and exposure range of a single image by recording two separate exposures and blending them together in order to gain greater highlight and shadow details with an extended range of mid-tones.
  • Active D-Lighting helps to preserve both highlight and shadow details when working in contrast-rich scenarios, such as backlit lighting. Utilizing the EXPEED 4 processor's power, a more controlled image will be produced with brightness values closer to how they are naturally seen. This mode is suitable for working with moving subjects.
  • Scene Auto Selector is an automatic mode that intelligently identifies your subject and shooting scenario, selects a proper Scene Mode to apply, and adjusts exposure settings to best render the scene at hand.
  • Scene Modes: Autumn Colors, Beach / Snow, Blossom, Candlelight, Child, Close-up, Dusk / Dawn, Food, Landscape, Night Landscape, Night Portrait, Party / Indoor, Pet Portrait, Portrait, Sports, and Sunset.

I'm a professional photographer, but bought this body as a gift for my wife - as well as possible 2nd camera for use on video projects. Overall, it seems like a pretty capable DX body. One disappointment so far: One reason I chose the D5300 was its Wi-Fi capability, and at least one Nikon ad I'd seen indicated effortless transfer to 'smart devices' AND computers. Just wanted to simplify getting her images onto her laptop. However, in reality, there seems to be no way at present to use its on-board Wi-Fi for file transfer to a computer - onlyl to iOS or Android devices. Feel a bit misled by Nikon on that. While I'm not a tech expert, it sure seems as if there must be a workaround - be it through an as-yet undeveloped app of some kind or by other means - to allow that Wi-Fi to do a simple file transfer to a PC or Mac computer. I sure hope so.

Mostly landscape and nature photography. I bought his camera because my Nikon D5100 was stolen. If you are satisfied with a point and shoot camera you will be satisifed with this one. Nikon has dumbed down this camera and removed many of the features that a photo enthusist look for. Example: there is only one option for autofocus. There is no option for spot focus. If you want to use AF, the camera determines what the focus point will be. Also the users manual has no INDEX. It now only has 104 pages verses the Nikon D5100 which has 260 pages.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Gray):

I owned a D7000 and purchased a D5200 as a backup. After selling the D7000 I thought about buying the D7100 but purchased the D5300 instead. It has the same EXCEED 3 processor and 24M megapixels as the D7100. It does sacrifices some features in high end flash and no auto focusing some lenses. But I liked my D5200 so much I chose the D5300 for my second body. Nikon has now introduced the EXCEED 4 processor and I will wait for my next step up in bodies. The D5200 will be sold then. My only regret is choosing the Grey body. It's Shiny Grey, don't like that. Oh, you can add a histogram to the screen to help evaluate your exposure. It's deep in the menu.

Easy to use (upgrade from D5000) Love the swivel screen. Haven't figured out the need or userfulness of the GPS and wi-fi. I would never send out a photo and if I was, it would work on it first and send it from my computer, not the camera. Love the 24 MPX. Probably the last camera I will ever buy.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

After having used a SLR sine 1967, and Nikon Digital cameras since 2004, the D5300 is the best camera I have purchased. The intended use of my D5300 spans the range from general photography to nature and astrophotography. Comaptability with my existing lenses made the body-only an easy decision
The down-side to the D5300 is that there are so many automated features to aide the user that trying to remember them is hard sometimes, but even on automatic, the picture quality is great.
For the price-point, the D5300 is a great upgrade or first digital camera for everyone.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I bought this DSLR last April from B&H in New York.
I think it's a great camera, original and functional. The chasis is strong and the large display looks very good (it is adjustable and can be very useful!). The quality of the sensor is evident in every type of pictures.
I find it very useful for both the GPS and wifi function for easy management of archiving the photos, even while traveling. Highly recommended!

Still experimenting with the Nikon 18-200 lens. I like the camera a lot, controls and menus (still learning those, though). Having some trouble with getting sharp photos, over and above the fact of the zoom. On reading, it is likely me, going from 12 MP to 24 MP apparantly can make it harder to get sharp pictures handheld.

I found this camera to put a great armature camera, since it is not full frame. It has the new wifi and gps built in, an impressive screen, and a good 5 fps shooting capability as you have seen.

My favorite feature of the D5300 is the vari-angle screen which is great for framing shots at ground level and any other angle away from eye level. It is also compact and feel great to hold.Since I already have several NIKON afs dx lenses, choosing this camera was easy. The improved resolution from leaving off the low pass filter and updating the processor are big pluses for the enlarged macro shots I love to make. Nikon left room for improvement by not providing a touch screen, weather seal, second card slot, or a second control wheel. I suppose those features will all be there whenever the D5800 is released ?!?

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I upgraded from my D90 to this model. One of the reason is the internal gis geo referencing feature. I do repeat photography studies to document climate change from retreating glaciers and land use change. I was using my D90 with the Nikon hot shoe mounted GIS unit but over time the connection got loosened and would no longer work. This is so much better because it is all internal now. Not to mention to HD video capability and the great EXPEED 4 image processor. Very high quality in every way. My D90 is still going strong and is my back up now.

I use my cameras in very demanding conditions in the Himalayas with extremes of altitude (up to 20,000ft) and climate from monsoon to glacier travel. I am very happy with this camera. Highly recommended!!

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I am a busy mother of three who wanted something that can produce quality images worthy of the moniker of art. Studio appointments can get expensive and photo shoots with the pros are too. I wanted to be able to take clear, sharp images of highly mobile targets (i.e. Children). This is not my first SLR camera. In fact, I've been a Cannon owner for over 10 years. When I began shopping for a new camera, I naturally looked at the Cannon but when I compared it to the Nikon specs, it wasn't even close. For example, the Nikkon uses 39 points when used in the auto focus mode. Cannon uses only 9. This camera also takes video is high def. So if my kids are doing something cute, I can switch to video mode and get all the action in a matter of seconds. The camera is light too and a bit more compact than the Cannon. Lastly, I love the special effects this camera offers. For example, you can focus on one color within your subject frame (lets say flowers in a vase) and isolate that color. The remainder of the photography will be black and white. You don't need fancy photo shop software to do this type of artistic work. The camera also has Wi-Fi so you can send photos instantly to an email address etc. Convenient and superb images! I am very happy with my purchase thus far!

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Red):

I'm an aspiring entry level hobbyist looking to use DSLR to do some video work for blogs and small business websites. The Nikon D5300 DSLR is everything I expected so far. Read a lot of reviews... probably should've gone with a cheaper version of a 7100, but I was intimidated by the many buttons and options. This is a great entry level perfect for small business use (not as a pro photographer, but as an online entrepreneur).

I "downgraded" from a D300s because it was very heavy and too much camera for me. I was never happy, as it was so heavy. I LOVE the 5300. It is just the right size. Normally, I would revert to using my little pocket camera, but this past week, I never stopped carrying and using the 5300. I am sooooo thrilled with it.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I bought this camera to take HDR photos. It's great. The auto-bracketing feature works well, although it occasionally will miss one of the exposures and take two of the same exposures. My only complaint is that it can only take three photos and the two that are over/under exposed have to be the same (-1 and +1, -2 and +2), so you can't do -2 and +1. For the money, I'd go with the D5200.

I bought this for my wife and the picture quality is excellent. Video quality is good. I chose the D5300 over the D3300 for its swiveling display and wifi and never regret.
