The red Nikon D5300 DSLR Camera features a DX-format 24.2 megapixel sensor and EXPEED 4 image processor to produce high-resolution still imagery and full HD video with notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 12800 and a fast continuous shooting rate of 5 fps. The sensor design omits the traditional optical low-pass filter in order to gain the utmost sharpness and resolution from both photos and videos. Complementing the imaging assets are both a versatile 39-point autofocus system, with nine cross-type sensors, and a 2,016-pixel RGB sensor for precise exposure metering in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, 1920 x 1080p movie recording is supported, in multiple frame rates up to 60 fps, with full-time continuous auto focusing capabilities.

The compact, yet durably designed, camera body incorporates both an optical pentamirror optical viewfinder along with a large 3.2" 1,037k-dot vari-angle LCD monitor, which features a 180° swivel design to better support working from high and low angles. Also integrated into the D5300 are both Wi-Fi and GPS modules, which enable advanced image sharing capabilities as well as location-based image tagging. When paired with an Android or iOS mobile device, remote viewing and control over the shutter release is possible from a distance and a vast network of pre-populated Points of Interest adds to the overall geotagging functionality.

For creatively enhancing the look and feel of imagery in-camera, a wide range of Picture Control modes, Scene Modes, and Special Effects modes are available as well as a host of in-camera image editing capabilities for adjusting settings prior to sharing. Built-in HDR and Active D-Lighting modes can also be used to optimize exposure results by preserving highlight and shadow details for an extended range of apparent tones.

24.2MP DX-Format Sensor and EXPEED 4 Processor
The 24.2 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 processor work together to produce overall high image quality with notable detail, dynamic range, color accuracy, and low-light sensitivity to a native ISO 12800, which is further expandable to ISO 25600. Additionally, the sensor's design omits an optical low-pass filter in order to acquire the greatest amount sharpness and detail from subjects. The EXPEED 4 processor also enables a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including support for full HD 1080p movie recording and a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 5 fps.
Multi-CAM 4800DX Autofocus Sensor
Benefitting the high image quality is an apt AF system that employs 39 distinct AF points, including nine cross-type sensors, to quickly acquire focus in a range of lighting conditions, from -1 to +19 EV. A unique 3D-tracking mode utilizes the 2,016-pixel RGB sensor, typically reserved for exposure metering, in order to maintain sharp focus on moving subjects. To better suit specific subject matter when working in AF-A or AF-C focus modes, Dynamic-area AF mode allows you to choose from 9, 21, or 39-point arrays for enhanced subject tracking and recognition, even if the subject briefly leaves the frame. Single-point AF, 3D-tracking, and Auto-area AF modes are also available.

When working in live view, for either still or movie shooting, a contrast-based AF system is employed to acquire focus precisely and can function in continuous, full-time servo mode to better suit working with moving subjects. Additionally, four AF-area modes are available when working in live view: Face-priority AF, Wide-area AF, Normal-area AF, and Subject-tracking AF.
Wi-Fi and GPS Connectivity
Supporting a wealth of sharing and tagging possibilities, the D5300 features built-in Wi-Fi and GPS modules to enable seamless transferring of imagery as well as geotagging functionality. Once the Nikon Wireless Mobile Utility app has been installed on an Android or iOS mobile device, you can use that device to browse the contents of the memory card, select images, and seamlessly transfer files between devices for immediate sharing online. Additionally, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera to enable working from a distance.

The integrated GPS functionality can be used to assign locational data to all image files for geotagging purposes and for plotting imagery to an interactive map. Points of Interest can also be found using this information to further aid in efficient location-based tagging.
Body Design
Even while maintaining an overall compact form-factor, the D5300 integrates a large 3.2" 1,037k-dot vari-angle LCD monitor, which features a 180° swivel design to better suit working from high, low, and front-facing angles. Alternatively, a bright pentamirror optical viewfinder is also integrated into the design for precise eye-level viewing and real-time monitoring of subjects.

A built-in pop-up flash is also available for additional illumination when working in low-light conditions and supports Nikon's i-TTL flash metering system. A hot shoe can be used, too, for connection and optional external flash for even greater lighting control.
Scene Recognition System and Exposure Metering
The intelligent Scene Recognition System with 3D Color Matrix Metering II utilizes a 2016-pixel RGB sensor to evaluate and analyze all aspects within a scene, including brightness, contrast, subject distance, and the scene colors, to quickly determine an accurate exposure and white balance setting to best render the scene at hand. The information gathered is also checked against onboard reference images to ensure consistency from image to image in regard to exposure, white balance, i-TTL flash settings, and subject-tracking AF performance.
Full HD Movie Recording
Full HD 1920 x 1080p movie recording is supported in 60, 30, 25, and 24 fps frame rates, as well as HD 720p and SD 480p in multiple frame rates, in the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format. During recording, full-time autofocus can be employed, with face-detection and subject-tracking capabilities, for ensured sharpness with a wide variety of subject types.

A built-in stereo microphone can be used to record high-quality sound or, alternatively, a microphone input is integrated into the body design to support the use of an external microphone for enhanced control over audio recordings.
Other Camera Features
  • Picture Control modes can be directly accessed via a dedicated button and allow you to set predefined looks to imagery in-camera, and include Landscape, Monochrome, Neutral, Portrait, Standard, Vivid, and user-customizable settings.
  • RAW (NEF) files can be recorded as lossless compressed or compressed at either 12 or 14-bit depth.
  • Built-in HDR works to extend the tonal and exposure range of a single image by recording two separate exposures and blending them together in order to gain greater highlight and shadow details with an extended range of mid-tones.
  • Active D-Lighting helps to preserve both highlight and shadow details when working in contrast-rich scenarios, such as backlit lighting. Utilizing the EXPEED 4 processor's power, a more controlled image will be produced with brightness values closer to how they are naturally seen. This mode is suitable for working with moving subjects.
  • Scene Auto Selector is an automatic mode that intelligently identifies your subject and shooting scenario, selects a proper Scene Mode to apply, and adjusts exposure settings to best render the scene at hand.
  • Scene Modes: Autumn Colors, Beach / Snow, Blossom, Candlelight, Child, Close-up, Dusk / Dawn, Food, Landscape, Night Landscape, Night Portrait, Party / Indoor, Pet Portrait, Portrait, Sports, and Sunset.

Why Nikon?
Simply saying I like Nikon. It may be funny, but as to me, Nikon brand is like Stradivari brand for violins.
I have several generation Nikon cameras from FE10 to F65 and therefore several lenses equipped with Nikon mount.
Why this model?
It seems to me to be a gold milestone between digital and film cameras. Quick response like film cameras completed with sophisticated automatic features. From another side, full frame cameras are too expensive for me because I earn money mostly by another way, I'm not a professional.
The main reason of choosing this model is resolution specifications of the most photo stocks. My proved Olympus SP-350 don't meet these requirements by a little piece.
There are several attempts to try my new Nikon D5300 with previous lenses.
It is possible to use the Zoom-Nikkor 35-70 with Nikon D5300 (5300+3570) but only for taking still pictures like this one (#3570_01) because difficulties with exposure control (manual try-shot-check-try type) and sharpness control problem (I checked the main subject sharpness at camera monitor).
Another turn of testing was the set of Nikon D5300 with AF Zoom- Nikkor 28-200. It was not bad idea because greater focal length of this lens mounted at DX-format camera. It was not good idea because lack of automatic sharpness control in this option. But a combination of Nikon D5300 + AF Zoom- Nikkor 28-200 is alive and useful for taking still pictures (#28200_01), architect details (#28200_04) and perfect for landscapes (##28200_02, 28200_03). This lens can serve as auxiliary long focal lens because format transition from full-frame to DX cameras.
The great feature of Nikon D5300 consists of traditional optic viewfinder and folded display. In some cases, for example, occasional shots in the streets and public places takes a few seconds and do not pull attention of surrounding people, comparing with contemporary manner to take pictures viewing at the camera display. However such manner requires some training of photographer.
The choice of lens is defined mostly by photographer style, I mean. Thus I prefer AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140 lens which completely fit my behavior as photographer. By the way, I was pleasured with wider angle of AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140 comparing with this one of AF Zoom- Nikkor 28-200 attached to the full-frame camera, 76 degrees vs 74 degrees. There are several pictures made within full range of focal length (18 mm: ##18140_02, 18140_04, 18140_06, 20 mm: #18140_03, 24 mm: #18140_07, 27 mm: # 18140_09, 66 mm: #18140_01, 90 mm: # 18140_05, 140 mm: # 18140_08) and under various lighting conditions.
Also I like a GPS option, it is handy in most situation.
The Nikon D5300+ AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140 provides me all opportunities for enjoying with photography!

I purchased the Nikon D5300 for my B-Day in December 2013 from BH Photo. The Auto Focus will only work in live liew and not through the view finder. I have shot less than 50 pictures. Today, I contacted Nikon USA regarding the issue. They want me to send back the body for service. I am a little disappointed in the product. I know that it is not the lens because I purchased the same camera for my spouse at that time. That camera is working fine with all of our lenses at this point. I now have to pay the shipping cost and insurance cost for this defective product. I will be caution about further purchases from Nikon. I am giving this product 3 star because of the focusing issue.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Red):

This is my 3rd DSLR from Nikon. I love the cameras and was very excited about the built-in GPS. However, the GPS is the only thing I cannot make work. I've tried updating the file and after reading other reviews, I have noticed it really works poorly. Also, the shoulder strap has plastic pieces, a worse quality than previous models. Otherwise, I love my new addition to the family.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

Have had the D5000 and the D5100, and this model builds on the best parts of both of those. Bigger LCD screen is nice, and the menu and button layout is very user-friendly. One very nice addition is the internal wi-fi, which lets me control the camera remotely and not only view images on my Android but fire the camera too. That's a little buggy so far, but worth it nonetheless.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Red):

so far i'm disappointed with the battery life. on the first round i only got 476 pix IN RAW before the battery ran out. i was told by nikon that this will increase with recharging up to 600 pix. this is still much lower than with my D5100. i don't understand this b/c the D5300 is supposed to have improved battery life. this isn't a problem while at home, but traveling abroad when out the entire day would be problematical. would need to carry MANY batteries - expensive and extra weight.using wifi and gps will further decrease battery life. self-timer button is difficult to access while on a tripod in the vertical position. otherwise, pix are clear and sharp and camera is fairly easy to use.

I haven't used the GPS or Wi-Fi functions yet; but overall the camera is considerably lighter, has a much-improved review screen, the function adjustments seem more intuitive to me, and it takes extremely sharp photographs. I feel this camera would be a great choice for any type of photography.

Still trying to get the hang of the D5300 as I'm coming from my first camera (the D3100) but overall I'm very happy with it - very sharp images, love the wifi capability and the flip out screen

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Red):

Still playing with it to become familiar with the settings. So far love it for nature type shots and still learning how to handle low light. Easy to use and to change settings as needed. Love that the body is red as it's easy to differentiate from other cameras I own.

This is a very nice camera for someone interested in the semi-automatic programs (PASM). The autofocus is very fast in all situations, easy access to change ISO when in A or S mode.

The GPS is a nice feature, though it takes a lot of energy. if you plan to use it, buy at lease another battery.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I am just an amateur - general photograpy, still and video. I has a D5100 and wanted to upgrade. I looked at the D7100 but it was really just out of my price range. After a lot of research on line and reading reviews I found out that the D5300 was capable of shots just as good as the D7100 but with much less imput from me - the amateur, not semi pro. I had dealt with B&H previously and decided to buy from them again and get the USA version of the camera rather than getting a grey market one from a less reputable dealer. All in all I am delighted with the camera. It is a mucher simpler unit for me and also weighs considerably less than the D7100 but still produces great pics. I am sure there must be a down side but so far I haven't found it. Love the camera. Thanks B&H

I upgraded from a mirrorless camera, and i'm incredibly happy with this camera. I usually use this camera for landscape and wildlife and the image quality is insane. The video quality is really good too, and so is the slow motion at 1080p and 60 frames. I absolutely love this camera and have had no problems with it so far.

I REALLY struggled between this and the 7100, but after much debate, I bought the 5300. It is terrific-superb image quality, has the wi-fi and GPS which were two features I really wanted, and the deciding factor of weight (this is nearly half the weight of the 7100) really makes this perfect for me. If you are a pro, I assume the 7100 has a few bells and whistles you may like (i.e. the dual card slot), but for anyone else, this is as good as it gets. I am extremely happy with this camera.

So far so good. Taken about 300 pictures so far, to teast out the different features. Haven't used them all, but the "SCENES" seem to do as avertise.
Only drawback is the compactness - weird, I would have liked it if it was slightly wider body. Otherwise the camera coupled with the Nikon 18-200 zomm fit most all my general needs.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Gray):

I owned a D7000 and purchased a D5200 as a backup. After selling the D7000 I thought about buying the D7100 but purchased the D5300 instead. It has the same EXCEED 3 processor and 24M megapixels as the D7100. It does sacrifices some features in high end flash and no auto focusing some lenses. But I liked my D5200 so much I chose the D5300 for my second body. Nikon has now introduced the EXCEED 4 processor and I will wait for my next step up in bodies. The D5200 will be sold then. My only regret is choosing the Grey body. It's Shiny Grey, don't like that. Oh, you can add a histogram to the screen to help evaluate your exposure. It's deep in the menu.
