The Nikon D5300 DSLR Camera features a DX-format 24.2 megapixel sensor and EXPEED 4 image processor to produce high-resolution still imagery and full HD video with notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 12800 and a fast continuous shooting rate of 5 fps. The sensor design omits the traditional optical low-pass filter in order to gain the utmost sharpness and resolution from both photos and videos. Complementing the imaging assets are both a versatile 39-point autofocus system, with nine cross-type sensors, and a 2,016-pixel RGB sensor for precise exposure metering in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, 1920 x 1080p movie recording is supported, in multiple frame rates up to 60 fps, with full-time continuous auto focusing capabilities.

The compact, yet durably designed, camera body incorporates both an optical pentamirror optical viewfinder along with a large 3.2" 1,037k-dot vari-angle LCD monitor, which features a 180° swivel design to better support working from high and low angles. Also integrated into the D5300 are both Wi-Fi and GPS modules, which enable advanced image sharing capabilities as well as location-based image tagging. When paired with an Android or iOS mobile device, remote viewing and control over the shutter release is possible from a distance and a vast network of pre-populated Points of Interest adds to the overall geotagging functionality.

For creatively enhancing the look and feel of imagery in-camera, a wide range of Picture Control modes, Scene Modes, and Special Effects modes are available as well as a host of in-camera image editing capabilities for adjusting settings prior to sharing. Built-in HDR and Active D-Lighting modes can also be used to optimize exposure results by preserving highlight and shadow details for an extended range of apparent tones.

Included with the D5300 body is the wide-angle to telephoto zoom AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens, which features VR image stabilization to minimize camera shake to suit working in dimly-lit conditions and with longer focal lengths. One aspherical element and one extra-low dispersion element are integrated into the lens' design to minimize aberrations and optimize image sharpness and an SWM autofocus mechanism is used to acquire focus quickly, silently, and accurately.

My last camera was a Sony A55 with a Sigma 18-250 lens. Even though I felt that the lens in some situations was a trade-off in respects to image quality (especially sharpness), I really was fond of this combo as changing lenses (while travelling etc.) is not an option at the moment. Unfortunately the A55 body got damaged and I needed a replacement. I asked B&H for advice (see below) and they recommended the D5300 with the 18-140 lens. Still quite fond of Sony, I again got in touch with B&H telling about my affection for the Sony A77. B&H once again recommended the D5300 for my use and so I gave it a try, but included the Nikon version of the Sigma 18-250 in my order. 5 days later, I received the shipment from B&H here in Norway. I´ve been using the Nikon for a couple of days now with both the Nikon kit lens and the Sigma. Personally, I do prefer the Sigma both in regards the zoom range and the colors produced. But still, the Nikon lens is really nice. Coming form a DSLT I instantly missed the live view of the Sony. This was really a fantastic feature and I have to get reacquainted with the small optical viewfinder. It might sound a bit harsh, but Nikons live view on the LCD is a joke - it's slow and inaccurate. BUT, the optical viewfinder is perfect and allows composing pictures perfectly, it's just not as comfortable as using the LCD screen, especially when you are wearing glasses. The pictures produced by the Nikon-Sigma-combo are surprisingly crisp and with nature true-to-live color reproduction. Especially taking into account the use of the travel-zoom Sigma, the images are amazing.Low-light performance is quite astonishing.Settings are easily accessible and the menus are logical. The Nikon body is nice to hold and nicely balanced, even though space between the camera grip and the lens is rather limited, resulting in your fingers getting somehow stuck. The Nikon can be used as a point-and-shot-camera, but invites to explore the world of photography to a higher extend as my previous Sony A55.All in all I'm glad I listened to B&H and got the D5300 and not the A77 (which by now has become quite old in terms of date of release).Part of my original question send to B&H:The problem is, I really don't know in which direction to go. I love taking pictures in all situations, indoors, outdoors and often in low-light conditions. With a child in the house, video-functionality and high fps (the Sony could shoot at a rate of 10 fps) as well as GPS and a swivel-mounted display are so to speak a must. In regards to the lens, the Sigma was just perfect for my use, but a faster lens would be nice - even though some of the zoom range would have to be scarified. So getting to the point, what I'm looking for is a camera that offers the specs of the Sony a55, but more refined, faster and most of all more reliable. Any feedback from your side would be highly appreciated.

What a wonderful little beginner camera...sort of. What a terribly bad kit lens. Strange green caste on virtually every image in RAW (and JPEG) format is less than good practice to correct in Lightroom.

Body--With a very plastic feel the camera body is ergonomically better than I expected after a few days of use. After changing many of the presets to something much more logical (like turning on sequential file numbering) and getting rid of the, patronizing 'diagram', information screen settings I'm beginning to like this camera. It's still missing a dedicated dial for the aperture—you have to awkwardly push a button while dialing with your thumb to get to the aperture control. Flip screen will be useful I think.

RAW Image files—have a putrid green caste on virtually every image regardless of white balance setting (as well as auto). In broad daylight, shade, etc. there is a 'fluorescent' type green caste to everything in the image files. Shooting in RAW you can correct this, but it's a manual process as the adjustment is a bit different for each image except those shot under fluorescent light. Images under fluorescent light are not completely corrected but the green 'error' is uniform between the images making it easier to cut and paste settings in Lightroom. The more over exposed the image is the less of a caste there seems to be what it seems like right now. As for sharpness….I'm going to be optimistic and blame the kit lens for the absence of that for now.

Kit Lens 18-140 AF -- The people running Nikon should have been too ashamed to put the Nikon brand on this one. If this will be a starter gift or if you are not picky or don't wear your glasses anyway most of the time than this might be a good lens for you. The autofocus is difficult in less than bright light and inconsistent as there is so much play in the focus gears that images are often soft even though the camera is done focusing. Sometimes the autofocus just gets confused and I have to manually focus or shut the camera off and on. Manually focusing this lens is even harder because of this play…less than a hair's movement and you're out of focus again…move just a hair back and you're in a completely different focus again. Wish I had bought a different lens.

I was using the regular class 10 Sandisk in the D5300 and upgraded to the SanDisk extreme 60Mb/sec (22.95) and now the continuous mode does not slow down. Before it used to slow down after 14 shoots. What a difference....

Comments about Nikon D5300 DSLR Camera with 18-140mm Lens (Black):

I am new to Nikon experience, I am very pleased with the Nikon 5300. It gives me great crisp photos. It is lightweight considering other cameras in the same range. It is easy to learn, easy to use. It performs great in plain sunlight and low light conditions. I did extensive research before buying it, and was still a little confused when I made my decision Now that I have it, I am sure I made the right choice. The 18/140 mm lens is a great match for the Nikon 5300.
