Set up is not for the novice. Probably why they don't sell them in most retail shops. But once you wade through that what you have is a super fast, VERY large depository for all your work. It can be set to most types of Raid (I chose 0 for speed and size) and can be backed up internally (Depending on your raid config) or to external drives (My choice). I went wit the 3TB WD red NAS drives and back up to WD GoFlex drives. Fast and convenient..and automatic. I have this one and 2013 model I bought last year. 12TB of storage holds all my images and videos with room to grow. I have 4 3TB Seagate GoFlex units hooked up to them for the back up. This newer, more expensive model, has USB 3 for that so things are much faster. It has a Dual core processor as well as 512K RAM. It's capable of so much more than just data storage but that was my reason fro buying them. I have 3 PCs and 1 MAC hooked up to them and they share field seamlessly. By hosting my fielso n it instead of locally each computer has access to the latest version. Sort of like a lightning fast cloud system in your home or office.

I bought this NAS with the purpose of digitizing all my records and storing media in a central, easy to access place. Unfortunately, the Synology Disk Station Manager (DSM) leaves a lot to be desired. I frequently receive device disconnected from network errors when trying to upload large amounts of data. The EZ Internet wizard has a very incomplete list of router vendors and requires manual setup for most of the products I work with. The applications available for download are equally unreliable and difficult to configure.

TL;DR The Synology OS and compatible software are more of a hindrance than a help to both novice users and experienced network admins.

I have several of these devices both at home and at various client sites. These devices are easy to setup, quiet, and compact.

It works seamlessly in my mixed platform locations.

Unlike other NAS devices I've used the Synology has had the least issues with utilizing LDAP for authentication.

Comments about Synology DS214 DiskStation Diskless 2-Bay SMB & SOHO NAS Server:

I use the DiskStation for my small business. When I opened the box I was able to install the drives in a matter of minutes. I plugged it in and had it setup with no problems. I was worried that accessing with their provided software would be an issue, but it actually came in handy. I had a very strange problem with some files that had bad file names, and could not change them from my computer side. I was however able to login through the diskstation software and correct the problem. It is easy to use, and suprisingly powerful. Very happy with the product. I had wanted to buy a NAS for a while, and was not let down with this model.

We use this product to for server backups and applications that use common files between servers.

It's to setup, the Synology web interface is easy to learn/use. The hardware itself is well made and the fan is quiet.

We were using a lower-end Buffalo product; it died after 9 months. We've only had this product a few weeks but I can see the quality difference. And we were able to use this for Windows backup 2012 server; for some reason the Buffalo NAS did not support standard backup on 2012.

Good NAS for home use, though it costs more than entry level products from Synology and others. Replaced an eight year old Buffalo LinkStation. Running two WD 4TB Red drives in Raid 1.
Data Replicator 3 software is lame and lacks features. Using free Cobian backup 11 and it runs rings around Data Replicator 3.

The wife and I needed a central storage location for all of our movies, itunes libraries and freelance work and this fit the bill nicely. I am only starting out with 1 3TB drive but so far so good.

This was way better than the drobo 5N I bought previously in regards to speed and features. I should have chose Synology the first time around.

Comments about Synology DS214 DiskStation Diskless 2-Bay SMB & SOHO NAS Server:

I am using the DS214 to backup an iMac and MacBook Pro using Time Machine. This, local DS214 then backs up changes each night to a remote DS214 over the Internet. Meanwhile the remote DS214 is backing up 2 Windows machines and remotely backing up the changes to my local DS214. Therefore 2 units are doing backups and remote backups for 2 families.

These units have been reliable and have performed flawlessly for 3 months. The administration and setup was not trivial but the administration interface is easy to use. The only thing that could be a little better is the layout of the various administration panels seems more complex that it needs to be. There is a control panel but it doesn't have everything that is needed. There is also a storage manager, backup and restore, and a file manager, all separate from the control panel. You have to look around to find what you need to set everything up.

This device is sitting next to the iMac and it is so quiet, I can't hear it operating.

This is by far the best backup solution I have ever used.

Comments about Synology DS214 DiskStation Diskless 2-Bay SMB & SOHO NAS Server:

I bought this NAS with the purpose of digitizing all my records and storing media in a central, easy to access place. Unfortunately, the Synology Disk Station Manager (DSM) leaves a lot to be desired. I frequently receive device disconnected from network errors when trying to upload large amounts of data. The EZ Internet wizard has a very incomplete list of router vendors and requires manual setup for most of the products I work with. The applications available for download are equally unreliable and difficult to configure.

TL;DR The Synology OS and compatible software are more of a hindrance than a help to both novice users and experienced network admins.

This is my third Synology NAS Server in as many months. If you are using external hard drives and looking for a storage upgrade rich in features and availability, this is the device. Easy to set up, easy to use and the apps available can turn this into much more than an eternal file storage device. It can also be a Media Center, backup, FTP server, webhost, and more. It gets along with Linux, Mac and Windows devices. I also have two DS412+ NAS Servers and all are populated with Western Digital Red hard drives.
