The Sony NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Lens is an update to Sony's NEX-FS700U that enables 4K/2K 12-bit RAW output, S-Log2 recording capabilities, and features a Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 PZ OSS E-mount lens. The NEX-FS700R retains all the features of the NEX-FS700U, including the native 4K sensor, Super Slow Motion recording, built-in ND filters, and CineGamma curves. 4K/2K RAW is recorded to the Sony AXS-R5 Recorder via the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit, or to compatible third party recorders such as Convergent Design's Odyssey 7Q via the 3G/HD-SDI output. The HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit and external recorders are sold separately.

The Super 35mm sized sensor matches that of standard film and digital cinema cameras. It accepts interchangeable E-mount lenses, as well as a variety of 35mm SLR and DSLR lenses and professional cinema lenses with the use of optional third party adapters. On-board, the NEX-FS700R shoots full 1080p video in a range of frame rates up to 60p, with bursts of up to 240 fps in full HD resolution and 960fps at lower resolutions. When used with the HXR-IFR5 Interface Unit and AXS-R5 Recorder, you can record continuous 2K RAW at up to 240fps and 4K RAW at up to 60fps. 120fps 4K RAW recording is possible in 4 second bursts. This makes the NEX-FS700R a high-speed, 4K camera ready for professional shoots such as indie films, commercials, corporate videos, and music videos.

You have the option of recording AVCHD footage onto SD cards, Memory Stick Duo, or the HXR-FMU128 Flash Memory Unit via the FMU port. It can also output 4:2:2 uncompressed HD video via HDMI 1.4 or 3G/HD-SDI to an external recording unit. For enhanced exposure latitude, CineGamma curves, including S-Log2, and 800% 709 gamma curves are available. Other features include an ISO range of 320 to 64,000, a shotgun microphone with mount/carrying handle, dual XLR inputs for recording uncompressed, professional-level sound, a 3.5" LCD panel with detachable with viewfinder attachment, and built-in ND filters.

The included Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 E-mount lens features an 11x zoom with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 27-300mm. It has a quiet AF motor and Optical Steady Shot image stabilization, and a three-step, motorized Adjustable Zoom Speed control. In addition to three variable zoom speeds, the lens supports constant speed zooming for slow, smooth zoom. Zoom can be controlled from the zoom lever on the NEX-FS700R and by the standard control on the lens barrel.

Two location shoots in and I'm in love with this camera. Our background is beta SP/SX then Sony EX3 cameras. This little gem has fit nicely amongst our run and gun setup as a special edition/series shooter.

One of the best features is the 4k option for when you're ready. We are not ready for that leap just yet but wanted to invest in something that could stand up for more then a year against the rising tide of competitors. This camera fit the bill.

FUNCTION- Has the guts to be ENG run and gun but throw on a adapter/lens and you're shooting with a prime. Great combo for those that need something more for a location production but don't feel like investing in the high end sonys.

AVCHD- One downside and it is rather troubling is the avchd codec and the dismal bitrate. The picture is great but the video just falls apart with post CC. Shoot with this in mind and you'll save yourself a world of hurt in post. There is always the SDI out for those high end clients that need higher quality.

KIT LENS - If you are used to an ENG zoom lens you may not like this kit lens. The zoom is variable in slow/slower/when will it end. I typically only zoom to set shots but when you are working with a time crunch you are better off going to manual mode for your setups. I ran some in field tests with a canon 50mm 1.8 and a canon 28-135, the kit stood up rather well to the canon glass. Not scientific by any means but I shoot pictures not vector scopes.

WRAP- I felt like I was using a camera designed by a shooter, not an engineer. The form factor is odd at first but feels better with practice. The button layout is the same, at first you curse the buttons all over then you giggle when you can change a setting in 2 seconds vs. a menu hunt. Overall I'm happy again (which is what really counts) and our clients are happy.

Our production company uses this camera for all our commercial and creative work. The ability to utilize the 240fps at full quality puts us ahead of our competitors. We really enjoy the battery life compared to a DSLR - we can use our Sony Battery all day without worrying about it. With the Odyssey 7Q we can accommodate Agencies with great 4k video. No camera around 8k can deliver that: sure the Blackmagic 4k can, but thinking practicality you won't find it to serve like you think. Few things that do cause some thought: the ISO likes to be around 320-640 to keep the noise down. You'll have issues if you go above that. We denoise everything every time even with the ISO at 320. The buttons on the camera are everywhere so you'll need to be careful not to bump it accidentally and ruin your setup. The lens that comes with the camera isn't up to par with doing professional shoots, so be sure to get the adapter for you current lenses. We like to run with an external monitor. The built-in LCD is too small to pull focus. The auto-focus isn't the best, but works when you can't do it yourself. Using S-Log2 is great, but be really makes a big impact when you have the Odyssey 7q. If you use the 4:2:0 to your SD card then try to use another profile or your image will fall apart before you get the look you need. Overall, a great camera. With external monitor you are future-proof for several years. The camera is easy for one gunner to use and great when you have a team. The weight is amazing and works well with the gear you may have for your DSLR. A great transition from DSLR to professional camcorder. A quality that easily competes with the $ + cameras. I recommend it if you have the need to spend under $12k and need slow motion. Slow motion makes this the camera to get. Even the 960fps in low quality mode is really fun to play around with. Go for it, you'll like this camera. Try a rental for a weekend and see if it fits your needs.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 PZ OSS Lens:

The camera is not a toy or a point-and-shoot device. It gives you the possibility to make and work in many different fields. From science, as I intend to work, to high-end film makers. The incredible high fps rate with HD definition allows endless application in physical research. The price of the camera is far bellow the price of the only-high speed cameras available for scientific purpose. My advice to those will buy one is to purchase one SSD and one USB-SATA adapter to plug it in directly on the camera. It's much faster and bigger than the SD cards for quite the same price.

I own a Film / Recording Studio so our projects vary in style and format. This camera is a very versatile camera and allows us to produce without having to switch cameras systems every time we shoot something. The image quality is great and with the Metabones Converter I'm able to use my Canon glass. The combination of Canon glass and Sony Technology is providing a look that I really enjoy and helps separate our content from other film companies.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 PZ OSS Lens:

There are plenty of reviews out there of the FS700, but I could still add my two cents:

        PROS:
        1) Shoots lovely video, to the point it can save you in crummy conditions. I recently shot a short where insufficient time was scheduled for lighting...so we effectively did NO lighting. I expected all the footage to look horrible, but it's actually rather passable. Even under plain florescent light or in rooms with incredibly bright sunlight pouring in through the window and hardly any light in the room, we got away with footage that wasn't too badly exposed.

        2) Slow motion: I love getting full HD at 240 FPS. The 480 and 960 FPS footage looks pretty bad, so I would avoid it, but the 240 is beautiful.

        3) Upgradeable: With the addition of a metabones speedbooster and Odyssey7Q recorder, the camera's low light capabilities are fantastic. The 10-bit 4K -> HD Prores footage the Odyssey creates is noticeably crisper and prettier than the 8-bit HD the camera produces internally (and takes up about 8 times as much space on your hard drive, I find).

        4) The grip. I really like the grip. I never use the kit lens, so the rockers for zoom haven't been useful, but the rosette on the grip has allowed me to attach it to my rig for handheld use in a very comfortable place (using a zacuto rosette to 15mm adapter). The placement of the expanded focus button is brilliant. It's much more important to have a focus-zoom-in button right under your fingers where you can find it without looking than to have a record button, I think. So kudos to whomever designed the hand grip.

        CONS:
        1) Form factor. This thing, out of the box, is just hard to hold. If you want to go hand held with it, you're going to have to mount some sort of rig to it (I like Movcam's cage, personally). Good luck getting your eyeball back to the viewfinder.

        2) Viewfinder is bad. It's really just an LCD with a diopeter tube hooked to it. The resolution of the monitor is too low, though. When you use the expanded focus with it, it's so grainy and noisy that in most cases it doesn't really help to zoom in very far when trying to get focus. Also, it's placement makes it useless for anything other than shooting on sticks. Finally, it doesn't seem all that accurate. It seems like it's been defaulted to being too contrasty and making the colors more vibrant than they are, as if to try to make your footage look nicer than it really is.

        3. Upgradeable, sure, but REQUIRES upgrades. You have to buy a new monitor. I ended up with a Cineroid, but I suppose you could go with whatever brand you prefer. At least I get better resolution and an eyecup that I can position farther forward on the camera for hand-held work.

        4. Expandable focus does not get sent to the external monitor!!! The placement of the expandable focus button on the hand grip WOULD be awesome, except that the only place it actually expands the focus is on the integrated, virtually unusable monitor. When I'm going hand held, I am only looking through my EVF. I wish I could see the focus expansion in it, so I could do focus checks on the fly. So the placement of the button is great, but it is rendered useless by the fact that you can't set it to be visible in an EVF. I wish I could talk to a Sony rep personally and beg for a firmware upgrade to fix this.

I'm still giving the camera a lot of stars because I've loved the footage it's produced. If the expandable focus to EVF issue were fixed, I might even consider going to 5 stars despite the weird form-factor and lousy LCD.

I use this camera primarily for weddings but even after only having it for two weeks, I could really see how almost anyone can use it for whatever they do. Not going back to a DSLR ever again, love the functionality of this video camera, love, love the slow motion, love the inter-changeable lenses, the weight is just right, not too light and not too heavy - although I have to get used to holding a heavier camera again. I seriously debated getting the sony a7s but decided on the fs700 and I'm so glad. It is so nice when wedding guests look at me and know that I am a professional - instead of them saying "That thing shoots videos?!!" You cannot go wrong with it, just make sure you have enough batteries.

We purchased this camera with a Convergent Designs Odyssey 7Q recorder to take into a coal mine for a documentary that we were shooting. The plan was to use the camera for the film and then get rid of it. After watching the footage from underground, we scrapped that plan. The low light performance of the FS700 is absolutely amazing. The picture graded with no problems and looked fantastic. When combined with the 7Q, especially in the 4K raw to ProRes mode, it looks as good as the Sony F5.If you are looking for a great camera at a really great price, take a look at the FS700.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 PZ OSS Lens:

I'm a hobbiest and wanted to step up from my old SD tape based Sony VX-2000 to something HD with future expansion possibilities. This Sony is just what I wanted, includes a fantastic array of features (that slo-mo is awesome) and for what I do with it (short subject films mostly) it will be my main camera for many years to come. It even came with a nice rebate that gave a free adapter that will let me use my Canon lenses. Nice bonus.

Would have liked it if the kit lens would work with the follow-focus kit I bought, but it didn't (the gear is blocked by the servo motor). B&H took the follow-focus kit back with no problems - B&H is a great company to work with.

We are doing more and more documentary style video to accompany music projects, and this really was a perfect purchase. It easily adapted to our current lens collection, and allows us to shoot in as high a quality as we choose. It would have been a better package if it had a decent viewfinder and not on the back of the camera. It was a good investment!

We use our camera for video production in Aspen, CO, where super slow motion powder shots are key. The camera is perfect for what we need. The look of our footage is crisp and the colors are incredible. The camera is user friendly and if you've ever used a Sony, it's an easy transition. A must have if you want to take your production to the next level.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS700R Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 PZ OSS Lens:

High quality picture, light weight and portable. A little awkward to shoot off the shoulder so you should probably invest in a shoulder mount. Overall the best money can get for an intro into 4K. To shoot in 4k however, you still need to invest in an additional recording unit, so don't think the $[$]takes you all of the way there.

I have been waiting for a while before buying this camcorder. Now I own one, I don't regret it at all. This item is great to shoot with. I already used it for events and it is working well without rigs. I put it on my chest and works fine like this, but kind of heavy though after 5 hours of shooting. I though it will take a while to get use to it but it is pretty easy, I would say that a week of practice is good enough to know most of the tricks. I bought the kit lens plus the Rokinon 35mm (which I believe is a 50mm with the crop factor) and to be honest I almost never use the kit lens. I work mostly in low light and the slow aperture is my biggest problem. But good to have in your kit for more run and gun style.
Don't hesitate and buy one ! Plus the slo-mo is fantastic !

I'm an action sports filmmaker and there's nothing that could beat what you get out of the FS700 for it being under 10k. The dynamic range is incredible when filmed in slog2 and looks pretty much comparable to raw footage from a red epic. Especially with it being $[$]and about $[$] by the time you buy a few extra lenses and what not your still under the price of getting a red epic for $[$]And unless your doing television work all the time you don't necessarily need the 4k. The 1080 at 240fps kills it in all environments and looks epic with every shot. I definitely recommend getting an f/2.8 lens and keeping the 18-200 that this camera comes with as a backup. But other than that camera works flawless and the picture profiles that you can create make it a step above all the other cameras that are under $[$].

I had a FS100 before this and wanted to go 4K without losing my set of lenses.
The FS700R looks more solid, it's heavier, has high frame rates and the built-in ND filter and servo zoom made the trick.
Still a bit expensive going 4K all the way (getting the extras do to so), but it is an all around camera. I was also looking for RED and BMC, but this suited me best, since I'm an independent filmmaker.

I waited. I studied reviews of everything out there. I went to B&H and tried out everything under $10K. This is the low-light, ND filtered, SLog2'd, interchangeable lens'd, full-framed, 4K'd World Champ. Now, my post-production is spent getting my other camera shots close to the quality of this camera's raw footage. Seriously, it's a camera that will outlast me.
