The DJI Phantom Quadcopter with GoPro Mount Version 1.1.1 is a quad-rotor RC helicopter that acts as an aerial platform for a GoPro HERO action camera. This product will appeal to a variety of potential users, from RC aircraft hobbyists seeking the ability to mount a camera so they can record their flights, to videographers and photographers looking to open up a whole new range of shooting possibilities.

Version 1.1.1 of The DJI Phantom adds a number of small upgrades over previous versions for easier set-up and more-reliable performance. New, Self Tightening propeller blades make set-up easy and protect against loose propeller blades causing in-flight vibrations. New Dual Receivers in the Phantom 1.1.1 and a new transmitter with an upgraded circuit board help increase the Phantoms operating range and help protect against wireless interference. And the new Naza-M V2 GPS autopilot software has better control and more accurate GPS stabilization.

The Phantom can achieve a maximum horizontal flight speed of 33 ft/s and can ascend and descend at up to 20 ft/s. It comes with 2.4GHz Transmitter (TX) that features an operational range of up to 984' line-of-sight. The controller draws power from readily available AA batteries. Please note that many Wi-Fi systems, including the Wi-Fi used on GoPro HERO cameras, also operate on 2.4GHz and may interfere with the transmitter. Take care to ensure the GoPro's Wi-Fi is turned off with operating this quadcopter.

Because of the complexity associated with multi-rotor aircraft, the Phantom relies on the Naza-M V2 autopilot system. This system uses GPS for navigation and to maintain flight stability. While fully manual operation is possible, most users, especially videographers hoping to get the smoothest possible shoots, will opt for GPS Flight Mode. GPS Mode is an autopilot system that keeps the Quadcopter stable and right-side-up when moving, and holds it in a fixed horizontal and vertical position whenever the controls are released.

Warning: Never use the DJI Phantom Quadcopter with your GoPro camera when both devices have their Wi-Fi systems turned on. The DJI Phantom's Wi-Fi and the GoPro camera's Wi-Fi run on the same frequency, so if you use them together when both Wi-Fi systems are engaged, the DJI Phantom's transmitter will lose the ability to communicate with the DJI Phantom Quadcopter. Whenever this happens, you will not be able to tell the Phantom where to fly. This may result in loss of property or damage to your equipment.

Streamlined Design
The portable, streamlined design reflects the aesthetics of its industrial design, while also allowing you to easily pack it into a backpack for transport.
Removable GoPro Camera Mount
Phantom has an external removable camera mount for you to mount a lightweight GoPro camera or other similar camera. It allows you to conveniently capture flight footage for exciting POV shots.
Includes Improved Transmitter
Phantom contains a remote controller and receiver, which help you avoid the inconvenience of purchasing such things. The only thing you need to do is to add TX batteries (4x AA dry cell). The 2.4 GHz (ISM) frequency makes the effective control distance up to 984.25' (300m) in ideal flight environments (it may be lower in certain flight environments). The frequency hopping anti-interference design allows multiple remote controllers to work at the same time, and provides a reliable remote communications link. The 1.1.1 brings with it an upgraded transmitter with a new chip set capable of a longer transmission. Both control sticks on the new transmitter spring to the center. The last addition is a pre-installed gimbal tilt lever. (gimbal not included)
Stable Performance
Phantom has an integrated flight dynamics system, the Naza-M V2 + GPS multi-rotor autopilot system, as well as a dedicated remote control unit and receiver. Flight parameters and functions have been set up before delivery and the proven stability of the Naza-M V2 autopilot system allows you to easily achieve optimum flight performance.
Attitude and GPS Flight Modes
The Phantom Quadcopter has two GPS-assisted flight modes for you to choose from. Of the two, GPS Mode is the most automatic. In GPS Mode the Quadcopter will stop as soon as you release the controls, and will stay hovering at a fixed horizontal and vertical position. This setting is the easiest to fly and is generally preferred for shooting video as the Quadcopter won't drift or be as susceptible to wind gusts.

GPS Attitude Mode, or Attitude Mode, is a more manual flying mode in which the Phantom Quadcopter does not try and maintain a fixed spatial position. When you release the controls it will continue to drift unless friction slows it down, or you stop it. In this mode the Quadcopter will be susceptible to wind gusts.

As with other modes that rely on Naza-M V2, to work Return to Home requires proper calibration and connection to more than four GPS satellites.
Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC)
IOC is designed to help make flying more intuitive. Nominally, the yaw control will allow the Phantom to rotate continuously, which can quickly become confusing if you lose track of which way is "front". Suddenly your controls can get mixed up, where pressing right causes the craft to move left and pressing forward causes it move backward. Intelligent Orientation Control prevents this from happening, keeping the "tail" of the Quadcopter pointed roughly toward the pilot at all times. To enable IOC you will need to use the Naza-M V2 Assistant Software.
Return to Home Failsafe
If the Phantom loses the signal from the controller for any reason the "return to home" feature will initialize. The aircraft will ascend to 60 feet, and then make a straight-line course back to the "home position" specified during GPS calibration. Once home the Quadcopter will safely descend to the ground and power itself off. As with other modes that rely on Naza-M V2, to work Return to Home requires proper calibration and connection to more than four GPS satellites.
Low Voltage Protection
Phantom offers two levels of low voltage protection, a function of the Naza-M V2 autopilot system. It prevents your multi-rotor from crashing or other harmful consequences caused by low battery voltage. In the first level of protection, the LED indicator blinks red to warn you. In the second level protection the system will trigger the Phantom to land automatically.
Maximum Horizontal Flight Speed of 10m/s
The maximum horizontal flight speed of the Phantom can reach 10m/s and the maximum vertical speed is 6m/s. The perfect combination of speed and stability makes Phantom and excellent shooting accessory.
High-Intensity LED Indicators
LED status light on the tail of the Phantom Quadcopter provides you with various kinds of feedback and warnings. Colors alternate between green, amber and red and can either be flashing or solid. These messages give you valuable information such as whether the GPS is properly calibrated,
Battery Supports 10 to 15 Minutes of Flight Time
Phantom includes a 3S 2200mAh lithium-polymer battery that weighs just 6 oz. It also includes a balance charger. With the all-in-one design and light airframe, the battery supports flying times of 10 to 15 minutes, which will give you a more extensive flight experience and longer recording sessions.
Naza-M V2 Assistant Software
After coming to grips with the basics of flying your Quadcopter you will probably want to download and install the free Naza-M V2 Assistant Software for Windows from the DJI website. This program lets you to unlock the full capabilities of your aircraft, allowing you to enable Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC), perform calibration and testing of hardware and software, or, if you're feeling confident, activate advanced flight modes.

I'm a software engineer and a professional photographer. As an engineer, I've worked on unmanned surface vehicles for the last 10 years.

I purchased the Phantom after doing much research on radio controlled/unmanned aerial photography. Primarily, I wanted to be able to capture photos and videos from unique camera angles. I purchased the Phantom 1.1 with a GoPro Hero 3+ Black edition. The Phantom Vision has an integrated camera with first-person view, but after much resarch, I decided that the Phantom 1.1 with the GoPro Hero 3+ Black edition would be a better value for my needs as a professional photographer. The Hero 3+ Black edition camera can be detached and used in many other situations, plus the camera provides superior image quality and with ProTune I'll be able to grade the videos in post, which gives me a creative advantage.

Please take into consideration that this craft is an unmanned capable system, and as such there are extra steps involved with setup and maintenance. Some people have given this craft a negative review on here because of this, but I consider it a huge plus. If you want something you can open and fly without assembling or calibrating anything, then go buy a cheap toy, but you'll probably end up disappointed with it's lousy performance and lack of configurability.

This craft has integrated GPS, IMU, compass, and a NAZA-M flight controller. Each of these systems require updates and frequent calibration. As someone familiar with unmanned systems, this was expected, and I was happy to see that these crucial steps could be performed with this craft. I did not want an unstable, non-upgradeable, consumer-grade toy.

The flight controller firmware should be updated as soon as you assemble the craft. Newer versions of the firmware fix problems observed in earlier versions and may prevent you from losing your craft. For example, newer versions of the firmware check for signal interference and allow for the craft to return home if interference is detected. So update your firmware from the DJI web site. All you have to do is install the Naza M software (which is Windows only, but I used Parallels on my Mac) and download the latest firmware and then connect the craft via USB and update it.

TIP: After upgrading my firmware, the craft blinked yellow continuously and was not responsive to the transmitter. After a little research, I discovered that you have to change the Receive Type setting to "D-Bus" using the NAZA-M software. For some reason, the latest firmeware changes this setting by mistake. If the transmitter is working correctly, you can move the controls on the transmitter and watch the sliders move within the NAZA-M software with the craft connected.

The next thing I did after upgrading the firmware was perform an IMU calibration via the NAZA-M software. The software said it didn't require a calibration, but I did an advanced calibration anyways.

TIP: When attempting the advanced calibration, I kept getting an error that the controller was too warm to perform a calibration. After just a few seconds of connecting the battery, the controller was too warm to calibrate. I got past this by doing what others recommended, which was have the NAZA-M software running, USB cable attached, and then attach the craft battery, and IMMEDIATELY after attaching the battery, click on the calibrate button.

Next, you have to calibrate the compass. You'll see a blinking red-yellow sequence if the compass needs calibrated. Calibration of the compass is easy. Just flip the GPS/ATTI switch on the transmitter back and forth about 10 times and the light on the phantom will switch to a constant yellow. Hold the craft level and rotate it 360 degrees until the light turns green. Then hold the craft 90 degrees, and rotate another 360 degrees. That's it. DJI's web site has a tutorial video on this and many other topics if you need assistance.

After updating the firmware, calibrating everything, and double-checking the manual and reviewing many YouTube videos, I took it for a first flight. I was nervous, as I didn't want the craft to fly away or crash. So I attached a long string to it at first to be safe.

Make sure you have good GPS reception and keep the transmitter in the GPS position. Turn the transmitter on first and always keep it on. Turning it off will send the craft into "Return to Home" mode, which makes it shoot 60 feet into the air and return to the home position. With the transmitter on, plug in the Phantom battery and secure the battery door. It will perform a power on seft test, ending with four green flashes. The light will then flash to signal GPS quality. A green with 3 reds is poor quality, green with 2 reds is bad quality (I think 5 satellites), green with 1 red is 6 satellites, and green flashes only is more than 6 satellites, which is great reception.

With the craft sitting ready for take-off in a clear, open space you can watch the lights improve from 3 reds, 2 reds, and then down to continuous green. Give it time. Don't rush take-off. You can still fly with blinking reds, but the GPS may not be as dependable.

You'll notice the light eventually start flashing green very rapidly. This means that the craft has stored the current GPS location as it's "home location." This is where the craft will return if signal is lost, and will the home reference point if course lock or home lock navigation modes are used.

Once you verify the rapid green flashes, you can feel safe about take-off.

I was actually amazed by how easy this craft was to fly. I've flown RC craft in the past, and it has always been very difficult for me, especially with keeping track of the craft's orientation from a distance. The Phantom with it's GPS-driven hovering capability makes it incredibly easy to fly. Releasing the controls will leave the Phantom hovering perfectly in a fixed position. So it's easy to take your time and learn to fly the craft safely, even in small areas.

Flying the craft at night is also possible and sometimes easier than daytime flight due to the extremely bright lights on the bottom of the craft. The red on the front and green on the back make it easy to keep track of the craft's orientation at night.

My 7-year-old daughter even enjoys flying the Phantom, with my very close supervision (hands on the controller).

CAUTION: These are not toys and should be flown responsibly. The blades can cause major injury. Just do a Google search and you'll find many photos of severely sliced fingers and arms. Please consider buying the blade protectors. I bought and installed them from the very beginning as an extra safety. You may want to consider buying two sets of the protectors, though, as they do break easy. On my second flight, I got a little too brave and got too close to a branch. It caused the propellor to strike the protector, which shattered the protector. Now I've got 3 blade protectors on the craft until I receive the new set that I'm about to order now. The craft still maintains level and smooth flight with 3 blade protectors instead of 4, which speaks for the NAZA-M flight controller. You may want to order extra propellers as well. The blades are directional, and each pair comes with 1 clockwise blade and one counter-clockwise blade. I bought two extra pairs, but haven't had to replace any, yet.

PLEASE fly these responsibly and do not put people or property in danger at any time. With these types of craft becoming more and more available to the masses, it's only a matter of time before legislation will be required to do something about the public safety issues involved with these things flying overhead at public events. I don't want to be "that guy" on TV for seriously harming or killing someone, and you don't either. So please fly responsibly, and please don't give these to kids.

Other than the crash and broken propeller protector, which was my fault, I've had no issues at all. I've flown it several times, and each time it performs flawlessly and as expected.

I plan to buy the Zenmuse gimbal for extra stabilization of the GoPro camera in the near future. I haven't had much time to do anything creative with the video yet, but it's very stable attached directly to the craft without a gimbal. A gimbal would make a huge difference though with banks, turns, and acceleration. At some point I may add a first-person-view system to the craft. There are several companies that make them to work with the GoPro.

With the propeller protectors installed and a GoPro Hero 3+ Black edition with the waterproof housing attached to the Phantom, my flight times have been around 10 minutes in the air, with a minute or two on the ground for self-test/GPS-lock/preflight checklist.

This is a very capable craft at a VERY affordable price. Read the instruction manual, watch all of the training videos on DJI's web site, take the time to properly assemble, update, and calibrate the craft, and you will be extremely happy with the Phantom.

I can't wait to take it out tomorrow and fly it again! Have fun and fly responsibly!

First, the software is only available for Windows 8 so we Mac users can forget about it .. and you know creative professionals NEVER own Macs, right? However, I assumed that it wouldn't need an update and worked right out of the box. Hit the wall at compass calibration. Would not do it. I followed their video explicitly. Without that, you get nothing. btw, mine arrived with one of the toggle switches inside the controller .. the retaining ring had loosened in shipping I suppose and the toggle fell inside. Had a time getting into the controller as the tiny screws were torqued down very tight but finally got it back together. I needed support but dji has no number to call, just one of those submit a form and wait 48 hrs things. I got an RMA from B&H (who is always top notch on returns) ... adios Phantom. Hope others have better luck than I.

Comments about DJI Phantom Quadcopter with GoPro Mount Version 1.1.1:

I love the idea of the quadcopter. It is supposed to be pretty easy out of the box but I didn't find it so. The instructions are translated and incomplete. For example, it doesn't tell you how to turn the motors on. You have to read the instructions in the calibration program, but you have to figure this out for yourself. I tried finding videos but they were only mildly helpful. The lights blink as a code, but the instructions don't list all of the possible combinations. I still can't figure out why my copter keeps landing on its own. A red light begins to flash within the green and then it just goes red and lands. It just comes down out of the sky which could be a bad idea depending what surface it is over, or water, as the case may be. The propellers are supposed to be marked with a matching direction to the rotor but mine were marked with two directions, locking and unlocking and it wasn't explained which to follow and I couldn't follow the same choice on all 4. I think this is why I am having trouble flying the copter. It drifts and very quickly sometimes. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because I think the problem lies somewhat with me. I have been able to fly it and once I got the hang it was easier but it drifts wildly sometimes and doesn't take off straight up. It wants to tilt before it takes off. The battery won't fully charge. There is 1s - 4s and the 4s never lights up. I did mount my GoPro on it finally and got some good images but it is hit and miss as to how the camera is angled during flight. Its hard to tell what you are capturing. I, also cannot get the compass to calibrate in the verticle orientation so this may be why it flies erratically. I have repeated the procedure numerous times but it doesn't calibrate. It doesn't ever indicate that the homing calibration has been effective. Lights are supposed to blink but they never do. There is no explanation of how the controls work on the remote and you risk crashing while figuring it out. my suggestion is once you get the copter moving upwards, let go of the sticks. It should hover. Don't go too high at first. You must be technically savvy to use this I think and I would advise getting it insured in case of wipeout. As far as the manual is concerned, I would give it a one.

Comments about DJI Phantom Quadcopter with GoPro Mount Version 1.1.1:

I purchased the Phantom Quadcopter as another tool in my video 'arsenal' but also for FUN!

I didn't really like the GoPro mount that came with the quadcopter so I just use the mount and case that came with the camera. Works wonderfully even without the fancy iso mount that comes with the newer version. I'm getting good clean, consistent shots without a lot of 'jellying' that occurs with the cheaper mounts.

      So far, so good!

Comments about DJI Phantom Quadcopter with GoPro Mount Version 1.1.1:

I have never owned a flying RC toy. This thing is extremely easy to fly. It was little frustrating to get flying the first couple of hours because the instructions were a little short in detail, but after figuring out the user errors, it was up and running. It is simply crash proof as long as you don't run into anything. The GPS is amazing which keeps this in the air at all times. I highly recommend it. The only downfall is if you want to get great smooth video, it can be expensive. By the time you buy the copter, the GoPro, a good gimbal and FPV, you will have 1,800 to 2,000 dollars into it. Expensive, but I believe it is worth it. I love mine.

Comments about DJI Phantom Quadcopter with GoPro Mount Version 1.1.1:

I have been considering this purchase for a couple of months now, and happy to have finally pulled the trigger. A lot of technology built into this small machine. GPS-mode flying and Intelligent Orientation Control are exceptional features, especially for the novice pilot.
Have not integrated the GoPro camera yet, but eager to get that rolling. If you are on the fence about purchasing the Phantom v 1.1.1, just go ahead and get it. You will be happy with your decision!
Just watch some beginner flight videos on You Tube (forget the printed manual in the box), and go have some fun with it.

Comments about DJI Phantom Quadcopter with GoPro Mount Version 1.1.1:

The Quadcopter is amazingly manoeuverable and steady on hover. While we are still learning what it can do, it appears that it may allow us to check on organisms under study in trees. This will save a lot of time and allow for much better data. And new applications keep occuring to us. Have tried it with a fairly inferior little camcorder (still works!) and will use it with a GoPro very soon. It is a shame that GoPro cannot stream video and allow control of Copter

Have to remember to watch out for wind! It is really just a big dragonfly and can't buck a gusty day.

Battery lasts no longer than claimed--be sure and get two.

Comments about DJI Phantom Quadcopter with GoPro Mount Version 1.1.1:

                  Where to start?!

This is very easy to fly and is loaded with features and the ability to upgrade them or even the flying platform. DJI is not the best with print material so I recommend looking at their product videos before flight. It is built very well and has a great range. The GPS mode allows you to hover effortlessly. It is designed to hold a GoPro however I am not a huge fan of the provided mount so I did some modifications to eliminate jello and protect the camera. If DJI made changes to the mount and had a little more info on the start up procedures I would give this a 5 but since those are lacking I dropped a star.

I first saw a DJI Phantom while overseas, someone I landed on a YouTube link watching the video produced as it circled yahts at Bimini Beach. I was hooked.

I practiced and practiced on Hubsan X4 h107l min quads, got comfortable, and pounced when this unit went on sale at B&H.

This is an amazing bit of technology, there is a lot of good information and tutorials available, many accessories, and a lot of fun.

My advice: stay away. If you don't heed that warning you too will be hooked, spending lots of time (and of course money) thrilling at how easy this is to fly and how reliable it is.

It Works (kind of). The manual, in my opinion is poor. It says to update firmware. I did it before first test and after that the radio could not communicate with drone. Hours looking up for help on Google and had to find the answer by myself.
The calibration only worked for me after inclining the drone. Discover that by myself. Some times the drone don't work at all. LED blinks with error code and it is impossible to calibrate GPS.
Beside that, it flies well, not as stable as I though it would fly but stable.

I would do research in other quads before purchasing a DJI product. Customer and technical support is the worse that you will ever experience. I have this Phantom with the Zenmuse H3-2D Gimbal. First few times were fine, but now the X1 switch that controls the gimbal is bad. Contacted DJI and it will take 4+ weeks for them to repair the switch. B&H won't do anything since it is past the 30 days for returns.

To get information about the Phantom, you need to check other websites as the DJI site is not much of help.

When everything works, it's a great quad. But once you start experiencing problems, best just to through it away before you pull all your hair out.

I got my phantom a bit over a month ago... Within the first few days. I called dji and b&h regarding battery not charging. They were kind enough to send me a return slip for the charger and battery. I also noticed, that the gps switch on the controller was not working... even checked in naza assistant. I sure hope they replace the whole thing ( I have had it now a bit over 30 days). The phantom i received was not updated to the latest firmware (from last year) and calibrated. That is another huge task with minimal documentation. I would suggest paying the extra money for the phantom 2 as I think this one is terrible.

                              Battery and charger are terrible.
