The 32GB iPad mini 2 with Retina Display from Apple has a smaller form factor than its big brother, the iPad Air. The iPad mini 2 is just 7.5mm thin and weighs less than 1 pound. Its smaller form factor makes it easier to hold in one hand. The iPad mini 2 comes in a silver finish.

The 7.9" Retina Display makes its debut on the iPad mini 2, maintaining its enormous 2048 x 1536 native resolution. At 326 pixels per inch, the Retina Display can show up to 3.1 million pixels at a time. The Retina Display is also a capacitive touchscreen so you'll be able to utilize all the multi-touch gestures of iOS 7.

While the iPad mini 2 may have a smaller form factor than the iPad Air, it still has the same dual-core A7 chip. Apple introduces the 64-bit architecture with the A7 chip, allowing for more robust and powerful apps. In fact, the A7 chip runs four times faster than the previous generation iPad mini. Also, the A7 chip supports OpenGL ES version 3.0 so the iPad mini 2 can enable detailed graphics and visual effects once only possible on desktop computers and game consoles.

The A7 chip is accompanied by the M7 coprocessor, which measures the motion of the iPad mini 2. By pulling data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass, it lightens the load of the A7 chip. This frees up the A7 chip to focus on processing multiple tasks and maintaining fast performance. The iPad mini 2 may have the Retina Display, but it still manages to maintain its 10-hour battery life. That's because the A7 chip isn't just more powerful, it's also more efficient.

The iPad mini 2 comes with iOS 7. Apple refined the typography, redrew every icon around a new grid system, and added a precise color palette for a minimalist design. iOS 7 also introduces features, such as the Control Center. The Control Center can be accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and grants you access to the most common setting options, such as Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Airplay and even a flashlight. iOS 7 also introduces iTunes Radio (only available in the United States), a music streaming service from Apple. You can build your own stations and listen to your favorite songs. You can also view the history of everything you've heard and added to your Wish List and then download them off iTunes.

With iCloud, you can sync your iPad mini 2 to your other iOS devices and Mac computers. Push photos, download apps and continue from where you left off in iBooks with iCloud. iCloud also offers cloud storage so you can back up your contacts, photos and important documents to Apple's cloud servers. You can restore your iPad mini 2 to a previous state using iCloud.

Retina Display
The Retina Display provides 4 times more pixels and 44% greater color saturation than the iPad 2. Within the 7.9" LED-backlit touchscreen, the 2048 x 1536 native resolution render text and images at 326 pixels per inch and a total of over 3.1 million pixels. The display also features a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating for increased resolution during use
Dual-Core A7 Chip
Thanks to the A7 chip, apps run faster on the iPad mini 2. Games are more responsive and everything you do with the iPad mini 2 feels quicker. It's up to four times quicker than the previous-generation iPad mini 2. It also supports OpenGL ES version 3.0, enabling detailed graphics and visual effects once only possible on desktop computers and game consoles. And the A7 chip features 64-bit architecture, opening the door for even more robust and powerful apps
M7 Coprocessor
The iPad mini 2 was designed to be on the move. That's why the M7 coprocessor measures motion from your iPad mini 2 by pulling data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass. This allows your apps to give you a better experience based on the movement of your iPad mini 2. It's a task that would normally fall to the A7 chip. But M7 is more efficient at it, which saves on power and opens up the A7 chip to focus on other tasks
Battery Life
The iPad mini 2 may be faster and more powerful, but it's not more power hungry. Even though it's four times faster than the previous generation iPad mini 2, it still gives you the same 10-hour battery life. That's because the A7 chip isn't just more powerful, but utilizes low voltage to be more efficient
802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi
With twice the Wi-Fi performance, thanks to two antennas and MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) technology, the iPad mini 2 can reach download speeds of up to 300 Mbps. With dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) 802.11n Wi-Fi and MIMO, that's double the data rate of the previous-generation iPad mini 2. So now when you want to download a movie, share photos or documents with AirDrop, or just browse the web, your connection is even faster than before
FaceTime HD Camera
Sometimes it's nice to put a face to the conversation. And with FaceTime video calls on the iPad mini 2, your conversations look better than before. Make a video call over Wi-Fi or cellular and see (or show) every expression on the beautiful display. Now the FaceTime HD camera features a next-generation backside illumination sensor with larger pixels, which brightens up all your FaceTime chats, selfies, and group Photo Booth shots, even in low-light situations
5-Megapixel iSight Camera
The 5-megapixel iSight camera on iPad mini 2 was designed to help you capture all of life's moments at a moment's notice. Use the Retina display as an easy viewfinder to frame the perfect shot. Quickly swipe between capturing stills or 1080p Full HD video. Every time you shoot, the image signal processor in the A7 chip works with the camera to make a ton of adjustments and deliver a great picture or video automatically
iOS 7
Apple has refined the typography, redrawn every icon around a new grid system, and added a precise color palette for a minimalist design with iOS 7. iOS 7 improves and adds features to the iPad mini 2. The Control Center is where you have access to the most common setting options like Airplane Mode, volume, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Camera, AirPlay and more. iOS 7 also introduces AirDrop, where you can share photos, videos, and contacts from any app with a Share button. iOS 7 also introduces iTunes Radio (only available in the US), which lets you build your own stations and listen to your favorite songs. You can also view the history of everything you've heard and added to your Wish List and then download them off iTunes
iCloud
iCloud functions as a wireless service for you to keep all of your iOS & Mac devices in sync. You can also backup content to iCloud and restore to a previous backup from iCloud as well
Siri
Siri lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, check the latest scores, and more. Ask Siri to do things just by talking. Siri understands what you say, knows what you mean and even talks back
AirPlay
AirPlay functions off of the wireless capabilities of the iPad mini 2 and allows you to seamlessly watch or listen to your content on your HDTV. When connected to the same wireless network, content can be controlled from the iPad mini 2 and ported through or watched on auxiliary devices

Comments about 32GB iPad mini 2 with Retina Display (Wi-Fi Only, Space Gray):

This is my second iPad mini - the first was stolen a few months after I bought it.I do not use it for gaming, watching movies, music or email, for the most part, but I have a library on it - with both books and magazines - very easy to read, light, and portable. And since I have a Macbook and iPhone, very familiar.

I bought this for a trip to Alaska, to put photos on it.
I also downloaded a editing app so I can edit my photos.
It works great. Easer to carry than a laptop.

Always a pleasure to deal with B&H, and as as a professional photographer, I have been dealing with them for decades.

Apple's New iPad MiniDavid PogueNov 22, 2013Also See:THE POGUE REVIEWREVIEWSYou know about "tl;dr," don't you? It's Internet shorthand for "too long; didn't read."In the old days, you'd say that about a comment you found too wordy. These days, you might add it to the end of your own comment to preface a one-line summary. Example: "tl;dr: Three architecturally challenged pigs have a run-in with an aggressive wolf."So here's my tl;dr summary of the new iPad Mini: It's fantastic. It's the tablet I'd buy right now.(If I could, that is. It's sold out everywhere.)imageNow, the new iPad Mini isn't the same concept as the original Mini at all. When the first iPad Mini debuted alongside the fourth-generation iPad, the Mini felt cheaper, ran slower, and was cursed with a duller display than the full-size iPad.Apple's second Mini, however, is almost identical to the new iPad Air. Same processor, same guts, same jacks, same front and back cameras. Same features, same battery life (10 hours, truly), same improved WiFi range and signal strength. Same gorgeous glass-and-metal construction, same caressable curved back edges, same color choice (white front/silver back, or black front/gray back). imageAnd then the big story: Same screen.Oh, it's smaller, all right: 7.9 inches diagonal instead of the iPad Air's 9.7. But it's exactly the same number of pixels, smaller and packed in closer together. Same image, slightly smaller and crisper. As you'd guess, as a result, the new Mini screen is incredibly sharp: text, graphics, apps, photos. Everything looks so sharp, you could cut Ginsu knives with it.What's ingenious about that Apple move (adopting a compact version of the same exact screen) is what it does for apps—which, you could argue, is the reason you buy a tablet in the first place. All 475,000 iPad apps run identically on the full-size iPad and the Mini. No software company has to come up with different versions. No layout changes, as you'd see on other tablet types (cough *Android* cough).imageIn any gadget, you want a bigger screen when you're using it, but a smaller one when you have to carry it—and the Mini's smaller size makes it a candidate for a purse or coat pocket. The only times you'll wish for the magnified image of a full-size tablet: when you're watching a video, and occasionally when an app's controls seem a little smaller than usual. To me, the Mini's carryability advantage easily outweighs those circumstances. (Besides: When the tablet is 16 inches from your face, the movie you're watching fills enough of your field of view. When you're home, [$] buys you an Apple TV that puts the iPad's audio and video on a big-screen TV, wirelessly.)Apple says that itty-bitty pixels require greater brightness to look good, and that drains the battery faster. To keep the Mini at 10 hours of juice, Apple had to give it a bigger battery, which makes it 7 percent heavier and slightly thicker than the original Mini (by three tenths of a millimeter, for you caliper-wielding types). You'd notice it, but only if you were holding the original Mini in your other hand for comparison.imageThat's not the only Mini drawback. The new Mini, like the iPad Air, has mediocre cameras and no flash. The stereo speakers are so close to each other (at the bottom of the iPad), you don't get any stereo separation at all. It's basically very clear mono. And of course, we have to talk about the elephant in the checking account: The new Mini is actually more expensive than the original one—it's now [$] instead of [$]. That's a weird step in electronics, where things usually get less expensive over time. It's even weird for Apple, which traditionally keeps the price the same from model to model but improves the features. The Mini costs at least [$] more if you want more storage, and another [$] if you want the version that can get online anywhere using the cellphone network. (Tip: If that's the one you want, for heaven's sake get it from T-Mobile. You'll get 200 megabytes a month of free Internet service forever, which might be enough for chats, email, and occasional Web checks when you're out of WiFi range. With Verizon, for example, the least expensive cellular plan is [$] a month.)Those prices are risky in an age when other tablets' prices keep falling. Google's Nexus 7, for example, has a similarly amazing screen and great battery life—and it costs only [$].imageThen again, the Nexus's body is made of plastic, and its screen is about one-third smaller than the Mini's. The screen is wider and shorter than the Mini's—a better fit for movies (the Mini shows black letterbox bars), but a slightly goofy shape when upright (in portrait orientation).Above all, the apps for Android tablets aren't anywhere near as good, or as plentiful, as iPad apps. In phones, the Android app selection has caught up—but not in tablets. So there you have it. The new iPad Mini is gorgeous. It's super fast, it makes available the world's best library of tablet apps and accessories, and its screen is the sharpest any iPad has ever had.And it's pricey.tl;dr: Apple is still Apple, pursuing polish and perfection, no matter the cost.

OK, my wife got one last year and has been glued to the thing! So this year, with the new Retina display, I jumped on board. I find myself using it for everything except loading photos that I've taken while traveling. For that I still use the MacBook Air. Why Apple? Aside from the fact that I own the stock, I find the syncing among products quite useful.

This is the best iPad i have owned. It is an amazing size and weight and really easy to carry around. It is definitely a winner. I sold my iPad 2 because it was just too heavy and cumbersome to tote around. I really like the form factor and the retina scene is so clear!

Wanted something to carry with me on my travels that wasn't as heavy as my heavyweight MacBook Pro.
Never had a tablet before and wasn't sure what to expect. But regarding form factor, the size and shape is perfect - I can hold it like a book, or set it down and read or type on it.
Regarding carrying and holding, this really depends on the case used; there's a lot of choice to there.
Regarding function, there's a lot I cannot do on an iPad that I can do on my MacBook, and a lot that can be done - but with limitations.
I will get used to it, but there's always the nagging feeling I should have paid more and gone with a MacBook Air 11".

I came from its bigger brother. And what a difference. It's lighter at least from where I was coming from, incredibly sharp, more portable and compact. It does all the same work without the extra weight. Sure there's less color gamut compared to the iPad Air. But this device is light, speedy, fun, and keeps me entertained for as long as I want from games to surfing the Web to listening to music to watching movies. It's my multi-media go to device on the go. For everything else I have my Macbook Air to complement my tablet.

Comments about 32GB iPad mini 2 with Retina Display (Wi-Fi Only, Space Gray):

I like the size of this iPad Mini and I like the Retina screen, very clear and crisp. It's much much better than my old iPad 2. With the mini, I am able to read everything clear on it and watch video on it with no problems. Playing games, watching video, surfing the web, and so on is much smoother and easier, thanks to it's new processor. No delays at all, quite speedy. Wifi speed is much faster than before.

Only downside is memory size. I mean I thought Apple would increase their size over time without changing the price. I got a 32gb which is ok. Was hoping Apple change new line-up in this order: 32, 64, 128, 192. 16gb is simply not enough to hold most of the great Apps that Apple offer. So, I must take one star with me.
