The VideoMic GO On-Camera Shotgun Microphone from Rode is a lightweight microphone which adds high-quality audio recording to your small camcorder and HDSLR camera. At only 2.6 ounces, the microphone keeps your camera setup lightweight, making it ideal for handheld shooting. It features an integrated Rycote Lyre shock mount for isolation from bumps and vibration, and offers battery-free operation, using instead the plug-in power from your camera's 3.5mm microphone input. Please note that the microphone will not work with cameras that don't supply plug-in power to their 3.5mm audio input jack.

The VideoMic GO is a directional microphone. It utilizes a super-cardioid polar pattern to attenuate sounds from the sides, resulting in a signal that sounds closer to the camera, even when shooting in noisy environments or at moderate distances. The integrated shoe mount provides a 3/8" thread for additional mounting options. A foam windshield and 7.9" dual mono 3.5mm coiled output cable.

The VideoMic GO is compatible with the Nikon D4, D800, D600, D7100, D5200, D5100, D3200, Coolpix A, P7800, Nikon1 V2. It is also compatible with the Canon T2i, T3i, T4i, T5i, 60D, 70D, 7D, 6D, 5D Mk II, and 5D Mk III.

It is not compatible with the Nikon D7000.

Lightweight Design
At only 2.6 ounces, the VideoMic GO is ideal for run-and-gun HDSLR recording without the additional weight of larger on-camera microphone options.
Integrated Rycote Lyre Shock Mount
Constructed from a single piece of hard-wearing thermoplastic, the Lyre provides superior acoustic suspension to traditional elastic solutions, and won't wear out, sag, snap, or require any rethreading to maintain its effectiveness.
No Battery Needed
The VideoMic Go does not require batteries for operation, but instead uses the plug-in power supplied via your camera's 3.5mm microphone input. Simply plug in, and you're ready to record.

I now use this mic every time I shoot. I is leaps and bounds better than the on camera mic but I do get a hiss or a hum from it occasionally. I use it on my Canon 60D. It works fine with the Canon firmware but if you are running Magic Lantern firmware you need to go into the Magic Lantern audio settings and boost the DB gain for it to power the microphone.

If you attach a cable extension you can use the mic as a boom mic to get it closer to the sound you need recorded (i.e. sound for a scene, interviews, etc.) It is a great cost effective way to elevate your audio for production.

My 4 stars is because of the audio hiss that I sometimes get. This may be caused by the connection on my camera or the cable, but I have not gotten the chance to full test those options and it has not been a huge issue for me to really need to investigate it that thoroughly yet.

I use this with my Canon 70D. It is definitely better than the built-in mic but it's not perfect. I mostly use the 17-55MM f2.8 IS USM lens with this camera and the built-in mic picks up focusing motor noise quite a lot. Using this mic eliminates most of it but not all. A very quiet scene, especially indoors, can cause the noise to be picked up even with this mic. Also, be aware that if you leave the mic attached to the hot shoe, the flash can not be activated for still pix, at least on this camera. Otherwise I like the mic. It's light, doesn't need a separate battery, pops on and off quickly and has good (in my opinion) sound quality. If you want to completely eliminate focus motor noise though, you need to use manual focus or get a boom mic.

Comments about Rode VideoMic GO On-Camera Shotgun Microphone:

I use the VideoMic Go for recording interviews/live events/bands on an EOS M. Since weight is one of my primary concerns (because I hate lugging gear) this mic does the trick! It's light, it sounds waaaaay better than the built in camera mic, and works suuuuper well in loud scenarios. I recorded a rock band on the fly and used this Rode VideoMic Go to capture audio, and it even sounded better in upon playback than when I was in the venue.

Now with that said! A caveat, it is susceptible to certain kinds of rf signals at times. It rarely happens, but when it does it can be kind of annoying to have rf noise creep in to the audio especially in quiet rooms. I've only ever had it happen to me in one specific room, which is next to some sort of radio system booth, but that is the only time I've ever had issues with this mic.

Totally a good purchase for people looking to keep their kits small and agile!

Does its job well. Picks up noise even with Auray Windbuster on it. Much better than mic on DSLR. Needs power supply from camera, so is not compatible with older cameras.

Shock mount works very well also.

Does a very good job for the price.

I purchased this microphone to be an all-around workhorse for shooting musical ensembles and interviews. So far, it works great - may TOO great. I've had to ratchet down the input sensitivity on my 7D because the mic is very hot. Overall, a good investment that does exactly what it's supposed to do.

I record family videos and also weddings and it does the job very well. The quality is very good for it's price. The fun part is I don't have to worry about battery for the mic like my older model I used to have.

This is the first mic that I have bought. I plan on using it on a Nikon D7200. So far all I have done with it is a test. It passed my test. It seems like it will do just what I want. Quality of the harware is fine. Sound is fine. Price is right. I would recommend it. If you are looking for more I'm sure you will pay more.

Comments about Rode VideoMic GO On-Camera Shotgun Microphone:

This is a very good buy for the price. As a professional videographer that uses DSLRs for filming, this is a very ideal choice. It records louder than most mics in this price range and it is also feather light. My only gripe is that everything recorded comes in at a slightly lower pitch. Sounds are deeper and it picks up everything around which requires a little noise removal with Audacity. Overall, you can't beat it for $.
