This NAS exceeded my expectations in every regard. I decided on the DS214play because of the video transcoding capabilities but was skeptical that it would actually work as promised. However, it works flawlessly. I ripped all my kids DVDs and put them on the NAS. They now stream them to our Apple TV, Roku, PS3 and otehr devices. I also use the NAS to backup 2 MAC laptops. The setup for time machine on the NAS wasn't the most simple thing in the world, but Synology has a document explaining exactly what to do. The NAS is very easy to set up and the software is simple to use. My only complaint about the device is that it only has a 2 drive capacity. It would have been nice if there was a 4 drive "play" model available.

      Nice NAs poor streaming

As a NAs is a very nice equipment.
      For streaming is somewhat deceiving.
Many problems with some extensions, dts, mkv, no iso, no vob, a dedicated equipment would be more usefull.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214play 2-Bay NAS Server:

Wanted to get rid of my dvd, cd and consolidate pictures. Have uploaded all my dvd, music and pictures, nice to have everything in one spot.

Next is organizing music and pictures. While they are their, it is overwhelming. Have picture accts for wife and two son's. Enabling rights as to what they can delete or move.

Disappointed in Playstation 3 video feed, it is lousy, Samsung smart tv has beta mode, unable to work with NAS.

Works well with ROKU, but does not have quick set up like the iphone and ipad.

Would like to see iphone / ipad photos stream to my NAS cloud, either I'm not smart enough, or the software is not quite their, but still better than paying more funds to drop box, apple, etc....

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214play 2-Bay NAS Server:

This unit replaced my older DS209+. The only reason I upgraded was to move from an older PPC CPU to an Intel Atom based CPU. Some software is written only for the Intel versions so it was time to upgrade. The migration was super simple!

I've owned QNAP before and had nothing but problems with them. With Synology I've never had a single issue.

never build a NAS before after researching decided to go with the Synology DS214play because of its intel processor and memory. Setup was easy just followed on screen instruction and was up and running in under an hour. Would recommend to friends and family. The hardware transcoding is not great since lack of support. I use a HTPC with plex to do my video transcoding.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214play 2-Bay NAS Server:

I bought the DS214 Play to use as a general backup (Mac mini, MBP via TM), storage for audio/video files and for its ability to transcode and play video files on my Roku 3 and other devices.

If you set this NAS up correctly then you will most likely be happy with it. The DS apps work well for sharing video, audio and photo files. One caution; Do not assume that you can use it as remote storage for your iPhoto file... it does not work that way.

The DLNA works great with my surround receiver, videos (most file types...) run well through DS Play to my Roku 3 DS app. DS apps on my phone and iPad work great too.

If you are a big remote access user then there are a lot of options to access your DS remotely. Home LAN setup is best "wired" on a 1000MBS setup, you will get the best transfer rates. Give yourself time to research the best setup (go to the Synology Forum) for you and allow time (most of a day) for the DS to calibrate your HDD's.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214play 2-Bay NAS Server:

This NAS is what I got it for: A way to centralize my family's data and have a good backup routine that was more accessible than my Windows Home Server 2011 box. Things like the SD card copy and USB 3.0 are nice touches. I had no idea that Synology was going to support Windows Phone 8, which is awesome. Automatic backups are painless. The online UI is good enough for me, but a little too difficult for the rest of my family.

Some glaring misses include the lack of native PLEX support, a feature I didn't know I needed until I didn't have it. It does work, but it isn't optimized. The Windows Phone apps do not allow for automatic upload like the iPhone/Android counterpart (a real bummer).

Took my 4TB HGST DeskStars without a problem. Loved the tool free design. Stylish.

Actually works with my wireless Brother MFC 7860DW as a file server using FTP. Unexpected, easy to set up bonus!

Worked with my TP-Link router on the 3rd try.
Overall, it is a bit pricey, but does what I want and what I need.

I've had this DS214play running for 3 weeks with no problems. Setup was easy and performance so far is what I expected.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214play 2-Bay NAS Server:

We have been using the DS for about a month now and are satisfied with it so far. Unfortunately it did not come with a physical owners manual, a CD of the manual, or a designated link to the manual online. This made setup times take longer than necessary. After calling Synology they replied that a disk was supposed to be included, and directed me to B&H for support. B&H was contacted and stated that they would have the disk sent out right away, however I later received an email that Synology did not have a disk for them to send and that I should search for the details online. We have already downloaded the manuals and are up and running but are disappointed that neither B&H not Synology fully corrected the problem.

I bought this mainly to store my video collections. So far so good, transfer speed is a little slow but I am transferring over wifi which I assume is the culprit here.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214play 2-Bay NAS Server:

Took about 10 mins to unbox, hook up, and start up. The UI was very clean and simple which made configuration a breeze.

While not worth removing stars, there are some media files which did not play. I tried via PS3 and my TV's media app but I suppose these files were so old that it just wasn't recognized. I ended up re-downloading a lot of files in higher quality.

Copying files to the DiskStation is a breeze. I can copy tons of GBs at a time and not slow the DS214 down. I keep it on all day as it's very quiet with the 4TB WD Reds I bought. I would certainly recommend this product.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214play 2-Bay NAS Server:

This is my first NAS. It is replacing a Linux file server that I had built. Setup as a basic file server was easy (SMB). Documentation is excellent for other tasks. It runs very quiet, even in the "Cool Mode".

Excellent apps. I got rid of my online solution to file sharing in favor of Cloud Station which works excellent.

Access from Android or iOS devices is incredibly simple from anywhere without requiring port forwarding being set up. Access from a PC or other computer requires that port forwarding be set up. It would be nice to see a program for a PC/Mac/Linux that would provide the same access you can get from mobile devices.

Data transfer rates are not as fast as my Linux file server was but they are faster than 802.11n and everything I use is wireless. I was about 150 Mbps write speeds when transferring data from an esata connected hard drive.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214play 2-Bay NAS Server:

I upgraded from an older WD NAS. This Synology one is so much faster, it's unbelievable. It's also great that it has 2 drives, with RAID1, so that I always have a backup on one of the drives, in case one goes out. Previously, I manually copied from my WD NAS to another external NAS once in a while.
The DS214play has a ton of features! It's essentially a standalone server, with the size of a tiny desktop. This might make it too advanced for those who just want the simplest networked hard-drive. Our home feels very high-tech though with its presence.

Great to back-up your system and add storage space to systems with SSD and lots of large video or image files.

Will not create bootable back-up for mac systems (not formatted as HFS+)

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214play 2-Bay NAS Server:

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214play 2-Bay NAS Server:

Bought because I intend to create a media server of my own DVDs. The DSM software is top notch, responsive and easy to use. Installing the WD Red 3TB drives in a mirror RAID 1 was super easy, screwless drive sleds was a nice touch. The online instructions are excellent, and there is a large user community as well. There are quite a few 3rd party apps available too. The unit handles streaming well. Setting up Time Machine backups was a little involved, but manageable. I am backing up the NAS to an external 3TB USB 3.0 drive that I will keep off site.

                              Overall, an excellent choice.
