The black HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens from Pentax is a high performance standard length zoom lens for K-mount APS-C cameras. Its 35mm focal length equivalency is 30.5-61.5mm providing a versatile and practical range for wide-angle to standard length shooting. It is the first zoom lens in the Pentax Limited Series line and brings with it a durable, weather-sealed body, HD lens coating and an optical design consisting of one ED element and one super-low dispersion element.

The f/2.8-4 maximum aperture enables effective low light shooting and, at the wide-angle end, control over its shallow depth of field for images that place sharp focus on the subject with a pleasing out of focus background. An in-lens direct current (DC) focus motor provides smooth and quiet autofocus action and its Quick-Shift Focus System enables rapid shift from autofocus to manual focus mode.

The lens barrel and the included hood are made from high-grade aluminum alloy, distance and depth of field scales are clearly marked on the barrel and a smooth rotating, knurled ring provides manual focus control. SP (Super Protect) coating on the front and rear lens elements repels dust, water and grease to help maintain peak performance.

30.5 to 61.5mm Focal Length Equivalency and f/2.8 Maximum Aperture
With its 2x zoom coverage of 20-40mm, this lens offers focal length coverage from 30.5 to 61.5mm in the 35mm format when mounted on a PENTAX K-series DSLR. This covers a practical set of frequently used focal lengths and is ideal as a versatile everyday lens. Its maximum aperture of f/2.8 at the wide-angle end of the zoom is effective in low light and provides shallow depth of field focus.
HD Lens Coating
This lens has been treated with the PENTAX-developed HD coating, a high grade, multi-layer coating that reduces unwanted reflection, allowing the user to capture high-contrast images free of flare and ghosting.
DC Autofocus Motor
Shoot discreetly with in-lens, direct current (DC) Auto Focus motor operation for smooth & quiet performance.
Quick-Shift Focus System
The Quick-Shift Focus System allows instant switching from autofocus to manual focus operation.
Weather-Resistant Construction and Durable Aluminum Barrel
With seven special seals to prevent intrusion of water, moisture and dust, this is the first lens of the "Limited" series to feature the PENTAX-original weather-resistant construction. With a handsome and durable aluminum alloy barrel and weather-sealing, this lens is able to perform in almost any shooting condition.
SP Lens Coating
The PENTAX SP (Super Protect) coating on the front and rear lens elements repels dust, water and grease to keep your lens clean and your images sharp.
Optical Design
The ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and a super-low dispersion glass element in this lens' optics deliver clear, high resolution imagery with edge-to-edge sharpness, throughout the entire zoom range.
Rounded Diaphragm Blades
Enhanced with a rounded nine-blade diaphragm at the wide apertures for optimal optical performance and gorgeous bokeh effects.

First of all I can't give an extensive review for this lens since I only had it a couple of weeks. Maybe after a few months I'll update this review to give you a better perspective on how I feel about this lens. I have lusted for this lens for quite a while now, but the thing that held me back was the price. Due to the limited range and due to some negative reviews I was hesitant to fork over that much money for it. A few weeks ago I was looking at the BH website and saw that this lens was selling for only $ Used in 9+ condition ! This was about the lowest price I had yet to see for this lens new or used, so I got it. I figured I could always send it back within 31 days if I did not like it. So, lately I have been testing this lens under as many real-life conditions as possible, hoping I would not have to send it back. Like I said, it's only been a few weeks if that many, but so far I'm pleasantly surprised. This lens is a marvel of engineering and so fits well with my K-5 IIs which is a marvel of it's own. First I will describe the Aperture which some people have complained about being too slow. At 20mm you can open up to f2.8, at 25-30mm f3.5, at 35-40mm f4.0. Not bad considering that even some limited primes within those focal ranges are not much faster. I compared the Sharpness of this lens against my 16-45mm f4 and 35mm Macro f2.8. The good thing about this lens is that it does not extend much from the body like my 16-45mm does. At 20mm it extends about 2/3 of an inch. at the other focal lengths it does not extend past 1/2 of an inch from the body. The distance scale on this lens is quite limited in that after 5 feet it goes straight to infinity with nothing in between, but that might have to do with lens design for zooms which I now little about From what I can tell, this lens is a tad sharper than my 16-45mm across all focal lengths except maybe the 30mm focal length, why I don't know ? What this lens got going for it, is the way it renders the colors and the contrast. Not artsy, not over-saturated, but amazingly life-like. At 35mm, my 35mm f2.8 Macro is sharper across the length of the frame, but to tell you the truth, there is not much difference between all 3 lenses unless you really pixel-peep. If you really want sharp though, set the camera to ISO 80. Then you start moving into 3D territory...Handling : Although this lens is supposed to be all metal, it is very light to the point where I think it's some kind of aluminum instead of real metal ? Nevertheless it is very well built, but I wish it had the heft of my other limited lenses just my opinion... The focusing is very well damped as well as the Zoom dial. So there is no problem there. One thing is the very fancy lens cap. I am so afraid that I might drop it and lose it (@$) that I keep it in my left hand when shooting. This lens is light and well balanced enough for me to do that thankfully.Autofocus is nearly silent and pretty quick. You really have to put your ears pretty close to the camera to hear it. This is perfect for places like museums, operas, churches, funerals, where the loud buzzing whirl of other lenses might become annoying. One thing I noticed is that the AF is faster and much more accurate if you limit the auto focusing points. I set my AF to Sel Mode and only use one focusing point, so far this has worked best for me.Bokeh is reasonable mild/smooth a little better than on my 16-45mm, but not better than on my 35mm, or 77mm. I have not had the time to test this much so I can't say much about it. Aberrations: What I like about this lens is this new Pentax Anti Flare coating. This really helps when shooting into the light, not just sun light, I'm talking about street lights and car lights and things like that. This lens does not fall apart like my Limited and other lenses do in those conditions. Another thing I noticed though is that this lens produces a little bit more CA under certain circumstances than my 16-45mm. It could be my copy, but I'm still investigating. If you take all the features into consideration, not just pixel-peeping sharpness, this is a wonderful lens and a marvel of engineering. Time and experience will tell whether I will send it back, but so far so good.

Gorgeous saturation; sharper than anything I've mounted on my K-3 thus far. On paper 20-40 seemed an odd range, but thanks to great B&H price, I went for it. Thankfully 20-40 does not disappoint! Motor is quiet; a solid chunk of metal but not heavy. Stellar quality glass, with a balanced and smooth feel. Love the old school numerics and scale too. My K-3 and I have a new friend. I hope Pentax will consider moving this technology into their purple fringe 10-17 zoom!

Comments about HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens (Black):

I have a K5IIs and had been using the surprisingly competent 18-55 WR lens (current version). The 18-55 WR lens yields very sharp and crisp images in the center, but not on the margins. So, I thought I'd try the 20-40 as an alternative (I use my little Pentax as an alternative grab-n-go camera to my other grab-n-go camera, my Leica M240). What results… I'd say conservatively that the 20-40 is an order of magnitude sharper in the center and along the margins, very sharp, compared to the 18-55 WR.

Normally I shoot with a Leica S006 or M240 and frankly this little lens, while certainly not Leica S or even Leica M equivalent, produces very sharp and acceptable images at a fraction of the cost.

I've found the 20-40 to produce sharp and crisp images at all focal lengths. However, I've shot mostly between 30-40 and at f9. As noted, excellent sharpness. I've also shot at the maximum apertures and the out of focus areas are generally smooth and pleasing to look at (not Noctilux Bokeh but very acceptable).

To sum up my experience… I've been very pleased with the sharpness across the lens, the auto focus has been accurate and reasonably fast (the K5IIs is not an auto focus champ to begin with) and much more enjoyable with the new DC motor vs. the old screw-type.

Finally, the images have been well saturated and contrasty, and with very little trace of CA or excessive distortion (shooting in RAW… JPGs will have near zero distortion due to in-camera corrections).

If you don't mind spending a little above average for a relatively narrow focal range zoom, this little Pentax 20-40 will be very rewarding to you.

Comments about HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens (Silver):

This lens is well worth having. Like another reviewer said, don't let some of the negative reviews scare you off. I found that none of the negative points are relevant. The f/4-2.5 aperture range is not a problem on a camera like the K3 with or K5 with their high ISO capability. The limited zoom range is not relevant wither. The 20-40mm focal range covers the most-used normal-wide focal lengths on a crop sensor camera. All of the other lens makers, Canon, Nikon, Sigma, make zooms with similar restricted focal lengths and they sell just fine.

I tested the rendering capability against the FA-43 and SMC K 30mm (sire of the FA-31). The 20-40's rendering capability is equal to those two legendary lenses. The bokeh is very smooth resulting from the rounded aperture blades. The lens weight is deceivingly light. The size is small so it's not obtrusive nor obnoxious to carry. So many of the other zoom lenses in this range are as big as water bottles. I really like the tasteful styling with the Takumar-style zoom ring. All in all, it's a very excellent lens, capable of excellent results, on par with all of the Pentax Limited primes, and looks good to boot. Highly recommended!

Comments about HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens (Black):

This lens trails competitors in lots of technically measurable ways - the speed, the edge sharpness, the overall zoom range, etc. But for photographers who value instruments as much as the results they produce, this thing is unbeatable. The craftsmanship and quality of the assembly and design is reminiscent of the great German optical instrument manufacturers, and the overall "look" of the images the lens produces is obviously very curated. The emphasis is on producing images that look balanced and natural more than making sure that a 4x zoom range or constant f/2 aperture is technically attainable. For all these reasons (and because also how it looks) this lens is very retro in it's overall lasting impression. For anyone who grew up shooting film and using equipment from the 70s and 80s, owning this lens will be really special.

Comments about HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens (Black):

The Pentax 20-40mm 2.8-4.0 zoom lens is remarkable. I keep it on my K3 the majority of the time. It has made my 31mm Pentax (*****) lens spend a lot more time in my equipment bag even with its wider 1:1.8 aperture. I use it as my primary lens and am very impressed and satisfied with it's performance. I was caught in a downpour and with the WR rating a micro fiber towel and lens cloth was all I needed to get back into action. In one word AWESOME!

Comments about HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens (Black):

Comments about HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens (Black):

I had originally decided to buy the Sigma 18 x 35 lens, but decided at the last moment to buy the Pentax 20 x 40 HD lens. The professional on lines reviews were less than stellar, but actual users seemed to like the lens so with much hesitation I decided to make the purchase. After using this lens for two days, I can say without question this lens is outstanding. While it is true the edges may be a little soft wide open, but it is tack sharp at F4 and beyond. Color is amazing too…reminds me of days gone by when I was shooting with Fuji film. This lens matches perfectly with my K3 and the build is every bit as solid as the camera. If you are on the fence about buying this lens because of on-line reviews, forget the so called professional and buy this lens. You will not be disappointed with the quality, price and performance. By the way, B&H customer service is amazing. I had a problem getting my gift card to work and their representative took care of the issue within minutes. Two major thumbs up!!!

Well made, solid yet light, with weather resistance. This has become my go-to lens for people and events. Fast enough to use indoors, with great colors and contrast. Replaces three primes in my bag. Only downsides: it is a little bigger than I'd like, and has a little more distortion at some focal lengths. Still, a great lens.

Pros:-Compact lens-Great metal build quality-Quick shift focus ring allows manual focus during AF-Zoom ring is easy to manipulate even with only one hand on camera (the ring finger can reach and adjust through the whole zoom range)The lens is sharp from 20 to 40mm wide open. There is field curvature, so on a flat subject one may not find the corners sharp - but I checked the corners when focusing them and they were pleasingly sharp. The lens is very resistant to flare and doesn't show much aberrations (admittedly it's not a fast lens). The F4 on the long end is disappointing for indoor use, but on a k-3/k-5 it's not so bad because of the fantastic high ISO performance.Cons:F3.5 @25-35mm, F4@40mmStupid hood/lens cap combinationMediocre focusingOnly 0.2x magnificationHigh price unless on saleI bought this lens on Black Friday/Cyber Monday for $ and it's a decent price at that. The normal price of $ is kinda out of this world. I think Ricoh is just using the "sale" price to leverage the proper price - but at $ it's a good lens. The hood is a screw in hood (not twist lock), and the lens cap goes on the hood. So if you ever take off the hood, you'll need to find another lens cap to use. If you use filters, you have to find specific ones that work with the hood. The autofocus isn't amazingly fast, but it isn't very slow. That being said, it's not great for sports (but it's not the right range for sports either, imo).

Comments about HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens (Black):

I have been playing with this lens for about a week now.Having read the fairly lackluster online reviews, I really have to wonder if the reviewer(s) got bad copies of the lens. But in any case, it performs very well in the real world. The center sharpness is quite good wide-open at any zoom level. Stop it down to f/5.6, and everything is absolutely excellent. The HD coating is not just marketing: the anti-flare is really impressive. Combine that with the weather resistance, and you've got a great lens to run around with; wherever you want.Aside from the obvious outdoor uses, it works quite well as an indoor lens; especially paired with a flash unit. The zoom range is perfect for a room – and the compact/lightweight/rugged build is very practical for shooting in close quarters.Pros:- Excellent handling of flare- Good contrast, color- Nice bokeh (though somewhat limited by max. aperture)- Excellent lightweight build and compact size- Very nice auto focus (one of the best from Pentax lenses that I've seen, really)- Smooth zoom operation, very good manual focusCons:- Not constant f/2.8- Some room for improvement on corner resolution wide-open (but it is still a lot better than what the lab tests seem to suggest)I will grant that it is overpriced: at ~$, it gives more what I'd expect for $. But it is still a very good lens to own.

I'm very happy with this lens! It is sharp, focuses FAST and nearly SILENTLY. In 35mm equivalent, it covers about 30mm-60mm. And it's not much larger than an old-school fast 50. For my preferred style of shooting, it's like zooming from a 50, to a 35, and sort of near a 28. Which reminds me of the Leica Tri-Elmar ;). On my new K5 II, it makes for a very comfortable, quite and fast-handling package. And, of course, B&H is the best!

I'm a confirmed Nikon-ite, but I purchased a K-3 system simply because I wanted a good camera to use on rainy days, and my D-800 isn't going out in the rain! This lens seems to be the best made of the Pentax WR lenses and is certainly quieter relative to auto-focus. It takes in a lot of light and so far I've encountered no negatives to report. Focus is sharp to the edges, and with a 35mm equivalent of 31-62mm, it fills that niche between wide-angle landscapes and portraits.

The first copy was badly decentered and had to be returned due to poor and erratic image quality. BH did a hassle-free exchange and the second copy was much better, being quite sharp at f/5.6 across the entire frame except for one extreme corner at 20mm. Build quality was superlative although the included lens hood is not very useful.Overall, the only real drawback is apparently poor quality control by Pentax despite the high cost of this lens.

Replaced 3 DA Limited primes. Super sharp wide open and consistent across the frame. Lightweight, WR, Metal construction. Definitely worthy of the LTD designation. Has wonderful bokeh and the great colors, contrast of the DA LTD primes. Autofocus is silent
