Product Highlights
  • Fits HERO, HERO2, and HERO3
  • Handheld Mechanical Stabilization
  • Provides Isolation from Shake/Vibration
  • Helps Reduce "Rolling Shutter"
  • Handle Folds for Transport
  • Requires LCD BacPac

The red Steadicam Curve a gimbal-based handheld stabilizer for GoPro HERO, HERO2, and HERO3 action cameras. It requires the LCD BacPac for proper balance and monitoring.

Once properly balanced, the Steadicam Curve is designed to allow you to capture extremely smooth shots without restricting your range of movement. Since the HERO models the Curve is compatible with lack optical image stabilization, a mechanical stabilizer such as this is the only way to truly avoid shaky footage when shooting handheld, and it can also help reduce some of the motion-induced "jello effect"--wobbly, distorted video--caused by the GoPro's "rolling-shutter" CMOS sensor.

The Steadicam Curve is a scaled down version of its bigger sibling, the Merlin, its size and form-factor designed to be in keeping with the compact, dynamic nature of the GoPro camera. When not in use, the handle tucks away beneath the camera mount, locking to the frame. In this folded configuration the Curve acts as a handle allowing you tote the camera around and can even function as an alternative camera rig for those shots where a handheld look is desired without sacrificing the control a rig provides.

Mechanical gimbal designed to fully isolate the GroPro from handshake and vibration

Big step up from shooting handheld.

Comments about Steadicam Curve for GoPro HERO Action Cameras (Red):

I bought this after coming back from a mountain climbing trip in the Philippines and seeing most of my footage was really shaky. I wanted something I could easily take on hikes and on travel that could fit in my pocket. I had the chance to take it out last weekend on a trip to Death Valley, and while the footage I got wasn't 100% smooth, it was waaay better than the footage I got in the Philippines. It really dampened the vibrations a lot, and any shakiness left I attribute more to my lack of experience than to anything else. I'm sure with practice, my shots will only get smoother. It fits easily in my jacket pocket, and is easy to set up, and the build quality looks really sturdy. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchase and I know its not gonna be a piece of gear that's just gonna end up sitting at home when I go out.

Comments about Steadicam Curve for GoPro HERO Action Cameras (Red):

I use the Steadicam Curve to shoot mostly sports and especially mountain biking. The Curve gives me the shots I am looking for but definitely takes time and practice to manage the device. The technique for keeping the camera straight and managing the proper angle takes a varied approach. I use one hand for most "fixed" shots and control the angle and orientation with one finger and thumb. However, for video where I will be moving I prefer the two-hand method.

While you will be able to shoot better with the Curve, it will take time to master so don't give up on it if at first you don't succeed.

Comments about Steadicam Curve for GoPro HERO Action Cameras (Red):

I like how compact it is, but this also make it difficult to fly. The handle is very small and I have pretty small hands myself. Practice is the only thing that'll make it work. It's very easy to balance and carry around. If you want to add something extra to your gopro videos, then I highly recommend one of these.

Comments about Steadicam Curve for GoPro HERO Action Cameras (Red):

OK, I knew it was smaller, but was surpised how small it was. I have big hands though...with that said, holding your thumb and index finger where directed, it does work ok. Did a few tests and you could definitely see the difference compared to hand holding it. It's compact, which is great and the locking feature is also good. Definitely need the LCD backpack to stabilze it...would recommend unless you have big bucks to spend.
